TONIGHT! Wright v. Quartey, Lacy v. Tsypko

We are live tonight for both cards, Showtime and HBO -- Matt and Kevin are covering the Showtime card one post below this one, and the HBO card, with the broadcast starting at 9:45 eastern, will be handled by yours truly. We have live, round-by-round coverage for all four bouts tonight. Like my colleagues, I plan to get pretty drunk, so no promises on how safe for work I'm going to be, especially since UCLA made a prophet out of me and saved my Wolverines' shot at a rematch with Ohio State.

It's a big night at Bad Left Hook and a big night in boxing. Here's looking forward to some good fights on a Saturday night.

Lacy/Tsypko is about to get underway.

Lacy/Tsypko R1
Lacy landing early, and seemingly at will, right between the gloves. Straight right, straight right, straight right. Tsypko is pawing with the right jab, but doesn't seem to be anywhere near as confident as Lacy is thus far. Easy first round to score, and a nice first round from Lacy coming off of the Calzaghe massacre.

Lacy 10-9

Lacy/Tsypko R2
Lacy rocks the hell out of Tsypko with a huge right hand just after the opening bell. Tsypko seems a little timid after that big shot. Tyspko lands a good left as Lacy swings a haymaker right. Lacy is swinging for the fences, but he's not getting reckless. I'm not sure Lacy at all respects Tsypko's punching ability, nor am I sure if he should. Tsypko looked a little better this round, but I still have to give it to Lacy.

Lacy/Tsypko R3
Tsypko has come out for this round with a far better gameplan than the first two, trying to keep Lacy's straight right out of the equation. Tsypko is starting to land a straight left, and we're getting a lot more competitive all of a sudden. Nice right hook from Tsypko with 40 seconds left. Followed with a left. Another sharp left from Tsypko, but Lacy starts unloading at the end of the round, landing absolutely nothing.

Tsypko 10-9
Lacy 29-28

Lacy/Tsypko R4
Tsypko has a couple of small cuts, one to the left of his left eye, and the other below and to the right of his right eye. Lederman has the same card as me at this point. The worse cut (left eye) is from an accidental headbutt.

Tsypko is starting to establish the left, and Lacy has yet to adjust to Tsypko's adjustment. Lacy stunned a bit on a left. Some trading the rest of the round, and Lacy really needs to get it together -- then again, it's Tampa, and he's from St. Pete.

Tsypko 10-9
38-38 through four

Lacy/Tsypko R5
The concern now is that this fight will go to the cards early because of the headbutt-caused cut. Both of Tsypko's eyes have some swelling, and Lacy's right eye is showing some damage.

Much slower first minute than the rest of the fight. They're fighting -- well, rubbing -- inside. Lacy is busier now, and he's controlling this round. Nice right to the jaw from Lacy. Both fighters seem a little bit gassed. They're trading inside, and Lacy and Tsypko both land some good shots. Lacy is hitting some nice shots to the worse cut eye, but Tsypko is no slouch and ends the round with a hard left to the body. Close round.

Lacy/Tsypko R6
Lacy is again staying busier, Tsypko just doesn't seem to have the energy, though Lacy is hardly full of fire. Lacy's starting to lunge forward on his punches. Once inside, it has turned into clinching, though Lacy is still trying to work in there. Lacy hasn't so much TAKEN the fight back as Tsypko has allowed him to.

Lacy/Tsypko R7
Tsypko is starting to get back into it, a minute into the round. Tsypko doesn't look great, but he's winning this round. HBO is reporting that Lacy's left shoulder is hurting. Couple of nice jabs from Lacy and a solid right. Close, close round. Lacy is winning inside, Tsypko outside. Very even round.

omen
Lacy between rounds: "There is no quit in me."

He does not look good physically.

Lacy/Tsypko R8
Lacy with a nice right, Tsypko staggers a smidge. Tsypko landing a right inside. Tsypko is doing more work this round, and if Lacy happens to lose this one, it'll be a combination of a nagging shoulder injury and Tsypko's adjustment after the first two rounds. Tsypko with a right hook that wobbles Lacy, and Lacy retreats to get out of the round.

Tsypko 10-9
Lacy 77-76

by Scott Christ on Dec 2, 2006 10:32 PM EST reply actions

Lacy/Tsypko R9
Lederman has Lacy up 77-75.

Tsypko just looks a lot better right now. Left, jab, jab. Tsypko with a straight left that lands. 1:30 left in the round, Lacy with a nice body shot but he lunges into another shot from Tsypko. Right hook from Tsypko has been the story of the last couple of rounds. Larry sums this round up: "This round, (Tsypko's) beatin' the hell out of Lacy."

Tsypko 10-9
86-86 through nine, one round to go

by Scott Christ on Dec 2, 2006 10:36 PM EST reply actions

Lacy/Tsypko R10
Lacy with a good right, and Tsypko needs to get busier if he wants to win this fight. It's too close for the hometown boy to lose a decision. Left, right, left from Tsypko. Tsypko is trying to go for a big shot, but Lacy is barely skirting the shots. Lacy is not winning this round, and I am only moderately surprised.

Final 30 seconds. Tsypko is landing, Lacy throws a big right. Lacy is swinging and lands a big right hook. Lacy wobbled with a right hook. Round ends, and this one is going to be interesting. As for me...

Tsypko 96-95

LACY/TSYPKO DECISION
95-95, the others score it 96-94 for Lacy

Not at all surprising, and not terribly controversial, but I question it personally. I'm not outraged. Lacy did not show what he needed to tonight.

Wright/Quartey about to get underway
As long as you're not watching what sounds like some great stuff on Showtime, it's main event time.

by Scott Christ on Dec 2, 2006 10:50 PM EST reply actions

Wright/Quartey R1
Winky with a left through the gloves, and another. Winky is far, far busier through the first half of the round. Some nice body rights from Wright. Not a lot of movement, fighting in the center. Winky stays far busier than Ike throughout the first round.

Wright 10-9

by Scott Christ on Dec 2, 2006 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Wright/Quartey R2
Winky with a nice right hook at 2:20. Quartey has slowed Winky down a little this round, but he hasn't been much more effective. He has limited Winky's jab. Nice left from Wright. Trading body shots now, and fighting close. Quartey down on a right with 10 seconds left. Thought that was a slip, but it's the official scoring of it. Ike might've been winning that round.

I can't give Winky 10-8 there because I really don't think he knocked him down. Ike appears to have tripped on Winky's foot.

Wright 10-9
Wright 20-18

Wright/Quartey R3
Winky, as usual, is controlling the pace. Both are active, but Winky is winning this round by my eye. Pie sky rye. The last minute seals that decision for me.

Wright 10-9
Wright 30-27

Wright/Quartey R4
Merchant and Lederman get into a stylistic argument about Winky. Ike just doesn't look good at this weight, he can't get anything moving. This is textbook Winky Wright, with a little more offensive work from Wright.

Wright/Quartey R5
Winky is all over Ike early on in the round, but Ike escapes. Some asshole is yelling something over and over and getting really obnoxious. How no one has taken a shot at him yet is beyond me.

Winky is, again, outboxing him. This isn't terribly exciting to watch, but I find some joy in watching Winky Wright do what he does.

Wright/Quartey R6
Quartey's going to need a serious comeback. This is do or die from here on out as far as Ike goes.

Ike looks a little better this round, and he's definitely not giving up. Both keeping their hands moving now. I think Ike might win his first round here in the sixth. That guy yelling is seriously getting goddamned annoying. He's got some voice, though, I'll give him that.

Competitive round, but Winky never overwhelms anyone.

SOMEONE PUNCH THAT MOTHERFUCKER

113 punches last round from Winky, a record for him. Ike landed at a higher rate.

Quartey's glove hits the mat, and that's a knockdown. That one was legit. Ike has to knock Winky out to win this fight.

OK, the guy following what might be IIIIIKE QUARTEEEEEY with ba-ZOO-KAAAA is saving his shit a little.

This was just another round. Just another Winky round. He's bigger, he's stronger, and his chin is too good.

Wright 10-9
Wright 79-73

Wright/Quartey R9
Birmingham to Winky: "You don't have to knock him out, you're beating him half to death."

Hurrld has it 79-71, but he's scoring both of those knockdowns that I think were bogus. Either way, Winky has controlled this fight and is clearly winning.

More of the same this round. There's little to describe. If you've seen Winky Wright win a fight, you've seen this. Quartey has a lot of guts and isn't fighting terribly, he just can't get any momentum.

Crowd erupts between rounds, I have to guess that guy has finally been ejected.

SHIT, he's still there.

Same round. Jim, Larry and Manny have stopped even talking about the action. Larry has stopped talking period.

Wright 10-9
Wright 99-91

Wright/Quartey R11
Larry opens the 11th with a total Larry sermon on the guts and heart of Ike Quartey, which he might have been writing down while Jim and Manny excitingly discussed what time of day is best to train during the last round.

Barring a shocking knockout, this fight is all but over.

Larry is totally in love with the fact that Quartey has an 85-year old sister.

Wright 10-9
Wright 109-100

Wright/Quartey R12
Final round, Bazooka needs a miracle. Given how he's fought this year, beating Forrest and not getting embarrassed by Wright (though he's clearly lost), Ike doesn't totally need to retire. But he's very wealthy, not going to get into a world title picture, probably, and has a family and all that. This could be it for Ike Quartey. It's not an awful way to go out.

Winky's just playing prevent defense this round. Oops, scratch that, there's a flurry. Back to the prevent, though. Nice little trade toward the end, probably the last of Ike's career. Double arms raised, bell rings, and they hug it out, bitch.

Quartey 10-9

WRIGHT/QUARTEY DECISION
117-110 on two, 117-109 for Winky Wright

Easy decision, and another Winky Wright performance from Winky Wright. This could be the end of Ike Quartey, and he's going to be one of those fighters that winds up forgotten by time, but remembered by those who saw him fight.
