Cherry-Ferguson R1
Nice left hook from Ferguson, both guys are coming out moving and punching. Cherry keeps walking into clinches, and he's already getting warned. Actually, both are. That didn't even take a minute.
Not a lot of action in the first half of the opening round. Tons and tons of tie-ups. Ugly stuff so far.
There are 40 seconds left in the round and we've seen absolutely nothing from either guy. Cherry with a couple of shots as they're getting tied up again. A nice 1-2 that ends on the body from Ferguson.
Ferguson 10-9
Cherry's corner is already upset with him.

Cherry-Ferguson R2
Nice right-left body combo from Cherry, as he's trying to bullrush his way inside and avoid the clinches this round.
Better round for Cherry, but still not much for a TV experience. The dead silent crowd isn't helping.

Cherry-Ferguson R3
Cherry really wants the body, trying to bring lots of pressure, and getting constantly tied up. This is like a D-level comparison to the main event, styles-wise.
One-two upstairs is blocked by Ferguson as we listen to a rotary phone ring somewhere in the distance. Ferguson warned for a borderline low blow. Ferguson is doing a lot of backpedaling at this point -- he wants nothing to do with a toe-to-toe fight.
Roger keeps screaming about the jab. JAB, WES. KEEP JABBIN, WES. KEEP JABBIN. JAB, WES.
When two guys that aren't landing much, and definitely aren't landing a lot that's clean, I am always going to lean toward the aggressor.

Lot of clinching, still. Wes misses a left, badly. Cherry is still getting inside a lot, but not getting a ton done once he gets in there. Ferguson with some nice counter work on the inside.
Roger Mayweather cannot keep yelling like this and have anything left for his nephew. Great sequence from Ferguson -- jab, jab, jab, jab, right. He looks much better this round. And he takes it, adding an uppercut just before the bell.

Just in case you were wondering.
If you were wondering what the crowd looks like for this PPV opener, a lot of people dressed as green chairs.
Oh, that is classic.
Ferguson is such a poor man's Mayweather. Same style, same idea, just doesn't have the immense skill that Floyd does. Cherry lands a couple of good shots to the head as Ferguson attempts to shuck and jive his upper body around, getting caught with a left and a right.
Ferguson, when he lets his hands go, is quick. But he's not accurate. At all. Same round as the first few, but Ferguson is starting to look a little more comfortable.

Cherry-Ferguson R6
Ferguson goes down off-balance on a pretty nice left hook from Cherry, but he's back up and looks OK. That could be a difference-maker, because points are not easy to come by in this fight.
Cherry, though, is looking for the kill. Cherry does hurt him with a right hand. Cherry has landed several good shots now, but I have the same thought Manny Steward just voiced -- a straight right hand might really open things up for him.
Ferguson does recover well after about a minute, and starts landing some nice stuff. Almost got enough in to make it a 9-10 instead of -- OH!
LEFT HOOK!
Ferguson is DOWN AND OUT!
It's OVER!

Ponce de Leon-Escobedo R3
Ponce de Leon is trying to make it rugged and rough, but Escobedo is doing a fairly good job of covering up. He's also doing a poor job of getting stuck in corners, which may eventually be his destruction.
Escobedo is now doing more running, and looks like he's learning to fear Ponce's power.

Ponce de Leon-Escobedo R4
Escobedo is definitely the quicker fighter, but he has trouble getting off first, and wants only to counter punch. But when Ponce flies forward with power shots, he has to cover up and play defense.
Ponce de Leon keeps moving forward with intent, but Escobedo is doing a very good job of not getting hit with anything too big. He is absorbing some chopping rights and good body shots.

Ponce de Leon-Escobedo R5
Good round for Escobedo, actually, at the halfway point. Ponce with a flurry at the ropes, but Escobedo escapes. Ponce de Leon does not look like he has the same power tonight, and he's finally warned for holding Escobedo and pushing his head down when they get inside.
Ponce de Leon has rallied over the latter half of the round, and I think he takes another one. Escobedo has backed off of pure counter-punching, though.

Lampley and crew are totally out of this, or their mics have gone dead.
Oh, there's Larry.
To be fair, very slow round, lots of stalking from both in circles in the center of the ring. Escobedo lands a couple of solid shots that back Ponce down a smidge. Here comes Ponce de Leon, and there's a nice looping uppercut with the left hand. Ponce steals this one in the last minute, but Escobedo could have done more to win it. It's his own fault.

Nice counter right from Escobedo, lands very squarely, but Ponce goes back to stalking in short order. Ponce de Leon is starting to measure as Escobedo runs, but he doesn't follow it up with a punch. Larry is all over Escobedo for coming in so low and getting caught with his head way down.
The Hatton fans are starting to get very vocal.

Ponce de Leon has struggled at keeping him in one place, which I suppose is a notch in Escobedo's belt. Sort of.

This round, he comes out with nice counter-punching. This has been an awkward, ugly, largely dull fight that failed to live up to any expectations I had, and I really like Daniel Ponce de Leon. A lot, in fact. He's been having a lot of trouble doing much with Escobedo, which is damning with faint praise for the challenger.

Escobedo falls down again off-balance. This just has not been entertaining at all in the latter half of the fight. I wish Ponce de Leon would have been better able to get anything going, but he just hasn't been. There's been little to get excited about. I credit Escobedo for keeping Ponce de Leon off his game, but that's about it.
That said, Ponce de Leon hasn't sat down on his punches at all tonight. He didn't land more than one or two really substantial shots.

Manfredo sticking the jab out there, not landing it, just flicking it at Lacy. Peter's beating him to the punch now, and Lacy looks very tentative now. I'm still not sure what to think about Lacy, and that round doesn't do much. I think Manfredo took it after the opening minute.

Manfredo keeps sticking the jab in there, throwing a right to the body, and Lacy has no answer. Lacy has shown nothing in the first round-plus. Absolutely nothing.
There's an attempt at a combo by Lacy, but nothing gets home. Manfredo counters with a nice sweeping right, and even without power, he's totally owning the ring right now.

Manfredo's faster hands are dominating Lacy, who has nothing going for him so far. There are two hard body shots from Lacy, and he might want to go ahead and focus on that. But Manfredo is still countering well, beating Lacy to the punch time and again.

But now, Lacy is coming with heavy shots. They're mostly getting blocked, but Peter needs to get in the fight because he knows all too well that a fight can be stopped on a flurry of punches.
Lacy is in danger of punching himself out, but he is throwing cannon-like rights and lefts. Manfredo is landing enough in the way of counters to keep himself squarely in it.
Good round for Lacy, but I worry about his stamina from here on out. He started looking gassed at the end of the round.

Neither guy has looked particularly inspired tonight at all. I cannot get into either of these fighters. Calzaghe ruined Lacy, and Manfredo has never been very interesting.
I'm hoping they go ahead with the rumored all-action undercard for Pavlik-Taylor II, because this shit is awful, and the Cotto-Mosley undercard wasn't much better. Same can be said for the lackluster fights underneath Pacquiao-Barrera II. I love that they're sort of trying now, but they're 0-for-3.

Mayweather headlocks Hatton nearly immediately. The crowd is very vocal, and explodes when Hatton catches Floyd with a stiff jab. Mayweather with a stunning fast left hook that really pops Hatton.
Down low, and a jab to the stomach from Floyd. Left hook again, and Floyd again moves away from him. Crowd is insane. Absolutely insane. You don't get this atmosphere for American fights.
Hatton is stalking, but Floyd is sticking and moving. Hatton comes in and gets tied up, and Hatton is constantly moving forward. Hatton swinging, missing shots.
HATTON STICKS FLOYD WITH A HARD COUNTER LEFT AND FLOYD STUMBLES
Holy cow, the cameras are shaking a little. This is wild.
Floyd with a straight right, and Ricky keeps countering back on him. The hard camera shake is getting very noticeable.
Hatton continuing to back Floyd up, and is managing to avoid Floyd's lead right hand. Floyd is actually having more trouble hitting Ricky than the other way around.
Floyd ducks out of the way of the jabs, and Hatton answers a right with a nice shot of his own. Great round for Ricky Hatton.

Hatton is punching out of clinches when he can, and letting them get broken when he can't. Hatton with another strong left hook, and he is controlling the pace on Mayweather, which so few boxers do.
Straight, strong right hand from Mayweather. Cortez brings them in after Hatton punches after a break, but I don't think it was intentional.
Hatton comes right out of it with more pressure, the lunging left hand bringing the fight to Floyd. Mayweather sticks him with another beautiful right, one of his trademarks. Then he immediately grabs Hatton.
Mayweather isn't punching in combinations like he usually does. The live crowd is just outstanding.
Hatton stuns Mayweather again with a lunging left! Mayweather is caught again, but he's punching back at the same time. This is getting a little rowdy and dirty. Cortez brings them in again, and he's bitching about dirty fighting. That could hurt Hatton.
Hatton swinging with three big left hooks. Mayweather is the one holding, as he does it again. Floyd's right hand is avoided this time. Floyd just does not have the combos working. He has to pick it up.

Hatton with another big shot! Mayweather narrowly avoids another one. Oh boy, this is getting hateful. This is outstanding. Compubox will NEVER be able to tell the story of this fight. Cortez is warning Hatton for holding, when I think it's Mayweather.
Nice left inside from Hatton. Hatton is a lot faster than I think Floyd was anticipating, and not only that, he's just coming and coming and coming. Exactly what he wanted to do, exactly what he said he'd do.
Hatton lands about four inside, Mayweather gets one in. Mayweather cannot fight Ricky Hatton's style, and Hatton is owning the pace and the flow of this fight. Completely owning it.
Mayweather misses a left hook, Hatton holds onto him. Cortez is getting a lot of work in. The holding is getting pretty bad.
There's more. Way too much clinching, part of which I think is Mayweather needing to readjust.
Hard left from Mayweather, and Mayweather pops him with a right. Hatton is cut over the right eye.
Mayweather is using his defense much more effectively this round, and he takes the round with good punching.

Very hard body shot from Hatton, as he has pinned Floyd on the ropes. A nice head shot follows up, though it didn't get in 100% clean. Hatton is working his ass off, and he has rarely looked this absolutely committed to a single plan.
Very hard right from Floyd lands, and Mayweather gets tied up. I am loving this fight so far, even with the holding. Atmosphere makes a fight.
Oh boy -- Mayweather with two beautiful punches that hurt Ricky Hatton. Hatton won the first minute, Floyd the second, and we've got 40 seconds left.
The cut has been re-opened.
Mayweather is now taking the fight over a little bit, hitting Ricky hard upstairs and looking like a vintage Floyd -- hard, accurate shots that take their toll. This round, he's looked like the Floyd that fucked Diego Corrales up to a huge degree.

Floyd swings the left hook, and Hatton misses a counter right. Cortez is too happy to break up clinches, I think. He's coming in before they can even try to punch out a lot of the time.
Hatton with a nice right to the ribcage, and he's backing Mayweather into the ropes again.
Floyd, really, is looking better and better, making Hatton eat his words and the right hand that is one of his best punches, historically. Mayweather looks like a powder keg right now, fighting harder than he has in years.
Hatton with some thumping shots in the corner, and they're tied up again. Cortez is now letting them fight out of clinches, which I'm happy about.
Hatton loads up a three-punch combo, but all are wild and nothing connects. An uppercut and two body shots follow and land. Mayweather backs him down with a jab and a right.
20 seconds, and either can win the round.
Mayweather warned for his elbows, another trademark. Both are clinching inside again, and these two feel like they hate each other.

Good shots from Hatton as they get tangled up again, and Hatton hits Mayweather in the back of the head as he ducks out of the ring accidentally.
And Hatton, rightfully, is penalized a point.
Hatton bends over and extends his ass to Mayweather. I am not kidding. This is some mean fighting.
Floyd with a left hook, and Hatton desperately needs to get this round back. That point could be huge at the end.
Two nice shots by Mayweather, and Hatton opens up with a combo against the ropes, again mostly blocked. Chopping right to the back of the head, Cortez must've missed that one from Hatton.
Mayweather is starting to act a little with the clinching now. Floyd is looking for deductions and a way to get Ricky fighting too aggressively.

Mayweather with some hard uppercuts, mostly don't get home. Hatton hasn't come in hard this round, fighting at more of a distance. He might be looking to come in with one of those hook barrages, but I don't think he'll catch Floyd with it.
Hatton with a left as they break a clinch, but Floyd is winning this round via being able to neutralize Hatton's rushing. This is the more modern Mayweather this round, good defense that he's able to totally make an opponent look awful with.

Vintage Mayweather. Seriously. This is the best Floyd has looked in years as an offensive fighter.
Ricky's still hurting a little, I think. He's trying to push, but he's not coming as furiously anymore. He seems to have given up on the hooks.
Mayweather with a nasty left hook, and Hatton's hurt again.
HUGE straight right, and Hatton is REALLY hurt.
