Chavez/Diaz r1
Chavez is throwing toward the body, typical Jesus Chavez. He's keeping the pressure up, and Diaz is landing a few jabs here and there. Diaz with a nice left to the head. Chavez lands a nice right upstairs, counter-punching Diaz.

Chavez looks rusty, but balanced and not nervous. Diaz has controlled the pace here, seemingly feeling out what Chavez is going to bring to the table tonight. Diaz easily wins this round, but there's still a lot to learn about how this fight will unfold. Both gameplans could change depending on what Chavez does, or what Diaz does now that he's seen what Chavez had in the first.

Diaz 10-9

Chavez/Diaz r2
Overhand right from Chavez, followed by a clashing of skulls. Chavez keeps trying to bob and weave his way in, but Diaz is just keeping him at bay. Diaz with a ridiculously wild left hook that misses badly, but Chavez is in no position to come at him off the miss.

Chavez misses a roundhouse left, and Diaz hits him a bit low to draw a warning. Chavez's form is Mayorga-ish thus far. Diaz has been calm and effective through the first two rounds, just picking his spots and winning rounds.

Chavez/Diaz r3
Chavez falls throwing a jab just as the round starts, his surgically repaired right knee has collapsed on him.

The fight is over. Well that just sucks.

Diaz wins on injury "knockout", round three

Jesus Chavez's career takes yet another unexpected turn. This is a shame.

Chavez's post-fight interview
Chavez apologizes to the world. A sad end to what I thought was shaping up to be an interesting fight. Chavez said his knee just gave out on him. He choked up a bit, with Don King behind him waving flags.

It's actually refreshing to see Steve Albert and Al Bernstein hype the EliteXC debut like it's not a personal insult to them.

Adamek/Dawson r1
Lots of pawing at one another for the first minute, no action at all. Dawson lands a left. Back to paddycake. Quick trade as Dawson goes in. Right to the body from Adamek. Straight left from Dawson. This is one punch at a time thus far. Dawson comes in and goes to the body, then backs out again. Dawson lunges, throws a couple, backs out. Story of the first round, no work from Adamek at all until there are 20 seconds remaining. Left-right combo from Dawson, and he takes this round very easily. Adamek might not be tentative, but he's fighting like it.

Dawson 10-9

Adamek/Dawson r2
Dawson is again the first to throw, 30 seconds into the round. Dawson is doing a lot of hit-and-run, but so far it's effective. Adamek is fighting like he's completely befuddled by the southpaw. Actually, he's not fighting much at all. This is some atypical shit from Tomasz Adamek. Adamek is doing NOTHING, and Dawson is fighting his fight, sticking, moving, and staying out of the trenches.

Dawson 20-18

Adamek/Dawson r3
Adamek is fighting five hundred percent on the other side of the spectrum compared to his fights against Briggs. He's backing away instead of trading with Dawson, he's not getting anything off on his own. He's not punching, he's not counter-punching. He's just not working at all. This is beyond cautious or tentative now. Dawson is completely dominating this fight.

Dawson's using his left more than he regularly does, which may have something to do with working with Floyd Mayweather Sr. Who knows? I am completely confused by Adamek tonight. Dawson lands a hard left, which does get Adamek to come forward, but Dawson just slips away. Nice jabs from Dawson. He is landing it at will right now.

What the hell is Adamek doing?

Adamek/Dawson r4
Dawson continues to absolutely dominate Adamek with the same gameplan that has worked to perfection over hte first three rounds: jabs, left hands. There's a sharp combo from Dawson.

Seriously, what the hell is Adamek trying to do? I can't remember the last time I saw a fighter so absent from his fight.

No one could have expected Chad Dawson to make Adamek look like a child, but that's exactly what's happening.

Adamek/Dawson r5
Dawson with another combo. And another. Adamek can't find anywhere to sneak the straight right in, and I don't think he's thrown one real combination in the entire fight.

Dawson backs Adamek into the corner, and Adamek has no answer for anything. He does get out, but the jab is starting to make its mark on his left eye. Right jab, straight left, right over the top. Hard right uppercut. Straight left.

This has a lot of similarities to the Mayweather/Baldomir fight from last year, not so much in total style, but you're watching one guy completely and utterly outclass his opponent. Adamek is tough and everything, but he's not in this fight at all.

It's been Chad Dawson for every second of this fight.

Adamek/Dawson r6
Dawson is all over Adamek. Chad Dawson is making his name tonight at Tomasz Adamek's expense.

Hard straight left from Dawson. Adamek still hasn't done anything in this fight, although he looks more this round like he's at least considering throwing some combinations. Dawson keeps getting warned for low blows, but unless it leads to a DQ, it won't even matter.

FINALLY, Adamek lands two right hands. Dawson coming back to the body. Uh oh - Adamek nails a right. Dawson comes back with a left, and misses an uppercut.

Tomasz Adamek is starting to work, finally. The counter right is there. Dawson won this round, but we may have turned a page.

Adamek/Dawson r7
Let's see if that was just a blip, like that round where Urango actually beat Hatton.

Quick left from Dawson. Adamek is waiting for a mistake, but he's going to need to huge bomb if he doesn't up his workrate. Dawson basically had five rounds where he didn't take a punch.

Adamek is definitely back into this fight, but Dawson fires right back. Floyd Sr. is trying to get Dawson to knock Adamek out, which I think is a mistake and only gives Adamek a shot to win this fight, because staying the course gives Dawson an easy points win.

Adamek is moving forward and starting to sway the pace of the fight.

And hey! There's a left to the body, and Adamek is down. Adamek's up, he thought he slipped, but it was obviously a knockdown. Up at eight.

Nasty left to the eye from Dawson, who is clearly confident at this point, and despite Adamek shaking off that knockdown, he knows he was knocked down. Maybe Floyd Sr. is a genius.

Dawson 10-8
Dawson 70-62

Dawson looks like a world class fighter tonight.

by Scott Christ on Feb 3, 2007 10:25 PM EST reply actions

well, whoops
The replay shows that the body shot landed, but Adamek did trip over Dawson's foot a bit. It's hard to judge what was what, but I'm just going to go with it being a knockdown, because if I wasn't watching TV, that's all I could do.

Adamek/Dawson r8
Dawson is a shark at this point, and Steve and Al are referencing Calzaghe/Lacy now, which is pretty fitting. This has been like the General Lee against an '88 Volvo station wagon.

Adamek walks into a Dawson punch, and that one clearly shook him up. He's done so much absorbing of punches and moving around and playing defense that he's as tired as he would have been fighting even with Dawson.

Adamek is crushed with a big punch, and eating jab after jab after jab.

Adamek/Dawson r9
Dawson starts unloading, starting with a menacing left hand and Dawson throwing more and more. Adamek is getting hurt now.

Adamek is backed against the ropes, in the corner, and this is becoming target practice for Chad Dawson. Adamek finally throws that straight right, but it comes up a little short and had nothing on it anyway.

Adamek has only a puncher's chance left, and he might not have the punch. Buddy McGirt is threatening to stop this fight if Adamek doesn't throw punches.

Adamek/Dawson r10
Dawson with a thunderous left hand. This fight is as good as over. I don't think Adamek would QUIT, but Buddy McGirt sounds very serious about stopping this fight.

Every round, it seems, Dawson starts off with a big shot and dictates every single round from there. Adamek is never allowed to get set or get anything going. Dawson's strategy has been flawless.

ADAMEK FLOORS DAWSON WITH A HARD RIGHT

What the hell?

Dawson's up at eight, but there you go.

Dawson is hurt, as he is holding on to Adamek for dear life. Adamek is looking for the kill.

Adamek has got to keep coming forward. ANd now he is.

Dawson is very clearly hurt no matter how many times he says he isn't.

Wow.

Adamek 10-8
Dawson 98-90

Adamek/Dawson r11
Dawson comes out firing off the left hand again, same thing. The last six minutes of this fight are going to be very interesting. On the cards, this is decided. But Adamek has newfound confidence.

Adamek is now charging at Dawson, who wants to stay the hell away from him. It's not the course of action you'd put in a movie, but it's the one where Chad Dawson is going to win this fight without question.

Dawson's trunks are falling down.

Dawson's trunks are literally off of him at this point. The referee gives him a helping hand. Nice guy.

Dawson is now being smart. Adamek eats a hard right, and he's covering up and hurt.

Closest round of the fight.

Adamek/Dawson r12
Well, one more to go. The story now is whether or not Dawson will simply play defense, and if Adamek can score the KO.

Adamek has lost 30 seconds.

Adamek has lost 1 minute.

Adamek has lost 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Adamek with a right, finally, but Dawson escapes.

Dawson has eaten up 2 minutes, a lot of it stopped over and grabbing at Adamek.

30 seconds to go.

Adamek has got to go for broke. He gives it a try, and another. Dawson is too quick. Dawson pops him with a right for good measure.

And this fight is over.

Dawson 10-9
Dawson 117-109
