I really hope the Pavlik era takes a back step tonight

Put the hype to rest for a bit

I doubt it though.

if anyone's wondering

Yes, that’s the Tyrone “T.T.” Watson that was dominated on ShoBox by Fernando Guerrero a full 15 days ago.

prediction

Hopkins is definitely going to stink the joint up and is probably going to get knocked out. Say, in the eighth. I don’t know if I’m going to buy this card. Or any other card with Hopkins for that matter.

I don't think he's totally finished

I think Pavlik is really good and Hopkins is really old and hasn’t faced a puncher like this in a long, long time, if ever.

No knockout

Hopkins has never been stopped, and I’ve seen nothing that shows he has any vulnerability to being stopped (hell, he’s only been knocked down in one bout, and that was nearly 14 years ago). Pavlik can punch, sure, but its not like Hopkins has never faced a puncher.

Pavlik, MD-12.

yeah, but what's the last puncher he faced?

Eastman in 2005? Eastman’s never knocked out anyone of note. Trinidad was a puncher…at 147. It’s been a long time. I’m not saying that Hop can’t take a punch or shouldn’t be considered a favorite as far as lasting all 36 minutes; he should be. I’m just saying the “never knocked out” thing is somewhat canceled out by the fact that he’s 43 years old and facing a really good puncher.

I agree with you Scott

I was watching the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight again today and you can obviously tell that he can’t handle pressure fighters the way he used to. The thing that I never understood about Joe in that fight is why he rarely threw any upper cuts. Hopkins kept running at him with his head down throughout the whole fight. Kelly will throw the upper cut . . . and frequently. Eventually they will add up and Hopkins will be wobbled. I think a late KO is in order.

Only chance I see Hopkins having is the same chance he had against Joe except a with few more of those “too close to choose” rounds.

Maybe Kelly comes out respecting Bernards’ counter punching style the same way Joe did. If Bernard can take away some of the early rounds because of this, he may have a shot.

But eventually I see this turning into a Pavlik kinda fight and Kelly landing and Hopkins finally falling.

Jacobs-Watson R1

Only a six-rounder. It won’t go six.

Swift combos and supreme confidence from Jacobs to start, which is what you’d expect. Watson, to his credit, is standing in there and mixing it up. He’s blocking some shots but they’re also knocking him back. Jacobs with three rights to the head. Nasty left hook from Jacobs — had that hit a bit more flush, it would be over and we’d be talking KO of the year.

Right hand upstairs, Watson’s down. Up and he’ll go on. Probably shouldn’t.

Watson’s destroyed to the body. It’s all over. Watson’s hurt and bad.

Rubio-Ornelas R1

Nice sharp 1-2 from Rubio after some feeling out for 45 seconds. Rubio with a body shot as he moves around and stays out of Enrique’s wheelhouse. Enrique with a right, but Rubio’s lands better and at the same time. Two nice left uppercuts from Ornelas. These two are fighting rugged.

Slippery right from Ornelas. These two are coming out and trying to hurt the opponent, exactly as most of us expected. And they haven’t even started REALLY mixing it up yet. This has been heavy-handed feeling-out. Good first round.

Rubio 10-9, but close

Rubio-Ornelas R2

Ornelas’ corner tells him he’s dominating. Well…

Ornelas is sitting back and trying to throw big left-hand counters whenever Rubio opens up. And there’s a charge on Rubio, beautiful stuff. Ornelas really caught Rubio with a couple shots there. Rubio is having a lot of trouble landing anything this round, with Ornelas staying away from him and working very well at distance. He’s not throwing as much as Rubio, but he’s controlling the action. There’s a 1-2 from Ornelas, which goes into the next point: this round, he’s landing the best punches.

Good combo from Rubio, and Ornelas with a left hook. Here they go, with Rubio throwing a bunch, landing an uppercut, and Ornelas comes in closer instead of backing down. Left to the body from Rubio. They mix it up at the bell, nice stuff from Rubio to close the round, nice stuff from Ornelas early. Another close round.

Rubio-Ornelas R3

First minute of this round is both guys waiting to see what the other wants to do, so little action. Ornelas with a nice combo that drives Rubio into the corner, and Rubio gets out very quickly. They’re working the body now, but that won’t last. Both are mostly headhunting.

Rubio with a straight right to the body, not much on it. I really like the way Ornelas is staying back, picking his spots, and keeping Rubio both on guard and off-rhythm offensively. Ornelas with a left while his arm is held. Slowest round of the fight, but a good, hard-fought round anyway.

Rubio-Ornelas R4

Ornelas throwing some big shots inside, and Rubio responds in kind. But it looks like Enrique has captured the momentum, even if he’s not exactly running away with it.

Rubio tries a right uppercut, but Ornelas gloves it. Uppercut from Ornelas. Rubio just isn’t able to land his best punches, though he’s throwing them with crispness. Right now, Ornelas is doing a good job dictating the pace and where the fight happens and when.

Rubio-Ornelas R5

Hurrld gave the fourth to Rubio. Very defensible. All of these rounds have been pretty close. Good fight. Tactical but both guys are punching with intent.

Ornelas warned for a borderline low shot. Rubio is dancing at a distance, trying to land long shots, and Ornelas is just waiting him out. Ornelas seems to prefer fighting inside tonight and not giving Rubio any openings. Fine strategy. Ornelas turns his head on a left from Rubio, very reminiscent of his brother’s robotic absorptions of punches.

Big shots from both, and I think Rubio might have hurt Ornelas a little. These two are throwing bombs to end the round! Ornelas with a great combo, Rubio with a hard left hook.

Rubio-Ornelas R6

Hurrld gave the Ornelas the last round, so he’s now got the same score with different rounds as me.

Left hook from Rubio, stopping an Ornelas combo attempt. Dirty boxing inside, but they get away from each other fairly quickly. Rubio playing nice defense this round, thwarting Ornelas’ attempts to score and lead. Rubio with an uppercut, falls a bit short. Nice jab from Rubio. This is good fight all around. Not sensation, just gritty and rough-and-tumble. BIG left hook from Ornelas, that hurt him. Rubio’s bleeding from the nose now.

Ornelas with another good finish, enough to take the round.

Rubio-Ornelas R7

Uppercuts are all the rage this round, it appears. Rubio has clearly struggle with establishing anything consistent, which is the main difference in this fight so far. Ornelas has landed bigger and better shots, has had almost all of the noticeable flurries, and has kept the pace almost entirely to his liking. When he wants to press, it becomes a battle. When he doesn’t, Rubio seems too cautious to make him do anything.

They end the round with another flurry, but not as big as before. Rubio is seeming slightly befuddled now.

Rubio-Ornelas R8

Ornelas is still the one doing most of the pressing. There’s not a lot to say about this that I haven’t already said — it’s a basic, totally watchable fight. Good stuff, nothing amazing. But good.

Ornelas is just the guy that seems to want it more. Psyche — I don’t buy that shit. Ornelas is better (so far).

Nice combo from Ornelas within the last minute. They’re beating the hell out of each other, slowly (sort of) and surely. Neither guy is going to feel good at all tomorrow.

Ornelas-Rubio R9

Hurrld has it 76-76. I can’t argue — again, lots of these rounds (most of them) are very, very close. These are very well-matched fighters. They are exactly as good as each other, more or less.

Another two minutes of action. I’ll be honest — I’m just damned enjoying watching this action. I really wish the crowd would pick up on the good fight they’re watching.

It’s also, again, close in the final minute. Rubio is gaining some steam, I think. As Jim noted, Ornelas has never won a fight that’s gone this far. Ornelas, again, lands some great shots. And they go heads down and fight it out to the bell.

Me and Hurrld are mad disagreeing on rounds. Oh well.

Ornelas knocks Rubio back a bit, but Rubio just comes right back at him. Ornelas goes hard at the body. I think he’s hurting Rubio. There’s a left to the chin that hurts him for sure. Ornelas is pounding away nicely this round. Rubio with two body shots to answer.

GREAT combo from Ornelas, snapping Rubio’s neck and driving him to the ropes. Rubio does come back quickly. Ornelas is really testing Rubio’s mettle this round.

Nice counter shot from Rubio. Big uppercut from Rubio. He’s punching with precision, and I think Ornelas is a little tired. Rubio does look fresher. Combo from Ornelas. Ornelas with a sweet left to drive Rubio back. And we’re back to a square round, really, with a minute to go.

Left uppercut from Ornelas, and a SHARP combo that ends with a thud on Rubio’s face. AND RUBIO OPENS UP! Ornelas is hurt and trying to survive, and BARELY saves himself. Wow.

Rubio-Ornelas R12

I don’t know that Ornelas is going to be able to stay up for this round. If Rubio is smart, he goes balls out. Hurrld has it 105-104 for Ornelas.

Rubio is opening up, backing Ornelas into the ropes. Ornelas wants to stay away. Ornelas FIRES ON RUBIO, AND RUBIO FIRES BACK! This is a fight to the finish, to say the last. What a grueling war this has been. Total slugfest.

Rubio with a combo, little 1-2 and a nice one at that. Trade of HEAVY right hands from both. Rubio stung from Ornelas, Ornelas hurt on two HUGE shots! This is amazing that Ornelas is up. Rubio trying to finish this. Ornelas is hurt, can barely see, and is FIRING AWAY! Crime in Italy.

10 seconds to go.

Ornelas tags him with two shots as Rubio makes a final charge. “Terrific fight,” says Larry Merchant. He’s absolutely right. Ornelas’ left eye is totally swollen shut.

Ornelas 10-9 — he actually won that round

Tough fight to call. There can’t be a bad winner, I don’t think. Hurrld had it a 114-114 draw.

115-113 Ornelas
115-113 Rubio
116-112 Rubio

Marco Antonio Rubio via split decision

Tough, tough loss for Enrique Ornelas. I really thought he won the fight, but again, it’s hard to argue. Most rounds were exceptionally close.

Super fight.

Luevano with a big flurry as Dib tries to charge in, but Dib ducks most of it. Luevano tags him again on a charge. Dib dances a lot. Good footwork. About all that can be said so far. Dib talks shit at the end of a simple round.

Pavlik-Hopkins R1

Pavlik slaps with a left hook after the two circle around. Hopkins charging a little, but then backs out before Kelly can open up. Chopping right from Bernard after a left hook to the body. Hopkins is staying away from Pavlik. There’s a three-punch combo from Bernard. Body shot from Bernard. Pavlik misses to the body.

Bernard Hopkins round so far.

Bernard with a stiff jab through the gloves. Pavlik with a right, Hopkins blocks most of it. This is definitely a Hopkins pace so far. Pavlik misses a right, lands a chopping left hook. Hopkins with a couple quick shots inside.

Great first round for Hopkins.

Pavlik-Hopkins R2

Hopkins come out with too much shit on his face so they stop to get some off.

Hopkins with a right over the top. Kelly reaching to land, and not landing. Nice left hook from Bernard. There’s two more, those blocked. One-two from Bernard. Pavlik is doing nothing.

Hopkins is staying away brilliantly. He’s doing an exceptional job of giving Pavlik NOTHING to hit.

Pavlik with a left hook after a missed straight right. Kelly wants to work the jab, but Hopkins won’t come close enough. Hopkins with a job, and another combo. He’s dominant right now. Hopkins wobbles Pavlik, and I’ll be damned, but Kelly looks really bad. He gets his feet back it seems.

Kelly has a mouse under his right eye. That was some shot.

1-2 from Bernard, and he looks VERY confident right now. He’s taking Kelly Pavlik to boxing school. There’s a power shot from Kelly, left hook and a right, and Hopkins complains about a shot to the back of the head.

Hopkins’ fans are rallying. He’s doing great so far.

Pavlik-Hopkins R3

Hopkins is just avoiding everything. He moves away, he comes in so far that the punches go nowhere and he disrupts anything Pavlik punch momentum, or he just plain blocks it. He looks quicker, and by far.

Hopkins throwing again. I don’t know who this is, but it ain’t the Kelly Pavlik we’re used to. He seems very confused by Hopkins’ style. Three punches from Bernard, none land, but Pavlik is not working at all. Left hook from Hopkins! And ANOTHER! Hopkins is kicking Pavlik’s ass! If you aren’t seeing this, I have no other way to describe it.

Pavlik short on a long right again, and Kelly’s trying to bully Hopkins at the ropes. But Bernard is just too savvy for it so far.

Two more shots from Bernard. Pavlik with a couple punches. He’s not landed one good, clean shot so far. Hopkins has landed several.

Stunning so far.

Pavlik-Hopkins R4

Hopkins digs to the body at center ring, and Pavlik has no answers. Hopkins goes back to playing keepaway, looking to counter when he can, and making Pavlik work way too hard to find openings. Kelly has done zilch so far. A big fat goose egg.

Pavlik comes hard, Hopkins counters nicely. Pavlik lunges again, and nothing comes of it. Hopkins with another slippery combo, making Pavlik look really bad. Hopkins with a left. Pavlik trying to go to the body. He is getting more aggressive in his pursuit, which he absolutely has to be. He cannot out-box Bernard Hopkins.

Hopkins with another nice left hook, and some follow-ups. Hopkins looks like he’s toying with a powerful man 17 years his junior. I cannot believe what I’m seeing, to be honest. I’m not going to lie and say I saw this coming. This is one-sided.

Pavlik-Hopkins R5

There’s no turning back now. Pavlik is biting EVERY feint from Bernard. He’s got no clue what to do with Hopkins.

Left hook by Hopkins. Pavlik chases Hopkins into the corner, and lands nothing. Right hand Hopkins! Left hook Hopkins! I cannot believe this. I have no idea what to say otherwise. This is totally unexpected. Hopkins domination.

Hopkins with a couple pot-shots inside, and there he is throwing. Pavlik FINALLY lands a long right hand, but Bernard was going away. Hopkins rallies again, and then complains once more of a shot to the back of the head.

Pavlik with a jab, left to the body. Another jab lands. Now he’s stalking. He’s GOT to turn it up, and hard. Pavlik with another body shot. Those will help.

Pavlik-Hopkins R6

Pavlik with a right to the body. Hopkins with a jab. And he tries to jab some more. Kelly’s picking off the power shots a little better now. The left hook from Hopkins has been excellent.

Left to the body from Pavlik. He’s gaining some momentum going downstairs. Thudding right to the body by Pavlik. Hopkins has definitely slowed down a bit. Bernard with a shot upstairs. Hopkins is now almost totally trying to stay away, and that’s going to hurt him on the cards. Pavlik trying to land almost all power shots. He’s got to work the jab better. That’s an obvious statement, but as much as Jack Loew’s said it, it hasn’t taken effect.

Pavlik-Hopkins R7

We’ll see what kind of legs the old man has left.

Hopkins is working again, and making Kelly miss again. Bernard throws a heavy right, but misses. Kelly is missing his right hand badly, and that’s his money punch. Without it, we’re seeing him almost totally neutered offensively.

Hopkins with a two-punch combo, with another pretty left hook. Hopkins is showboating, winding his right and landing it. Hopkins is RIPPING Kelly Pavlik. Pavlik looks wildly discouraged. Hopkins is putting on one of his all-time best performances. Period.

Pavlik-Hopkins R8

Left hook lands again. Right lands again. Hopkins throwing the left hook like he’s just fuckin’ around now.

Pavlik’s jab is landing a little, but it’s not setting anything up so far. Manny Steward again points out something important: Pavlik’s punches are “gangly” and “loose.” That’s how you’d describe it. No crispness.

Pavlik gets a point taken away for shots to the back of the head. Wow. If Pavlik wasn’t out of it before, he might be now.

Hopkins with another right. And another. And another. He’s killing Kelly Pavlik. This is, perhaps, unprecedented.

Right hand from Hopkins. I should also say that this is a good, interesting fight, and very much one of Hop’s best fights in recent years. Doesn’t hurt that the shock of this is elevating it to something even bigger.

Kelly swipes Hopkins away during a Hopkins flurry, and there’s a big, strong, straight right from Hopkins. Pavlik’s bleeding from the left eye. This is a strange, strange night in boxing. Even if you picked Bernard, no one saw this coming.

Point taken from Hopkins for holding at the end of the round.

Pavlik-Hopkins R10

Hurrld gave the last round to Pavlik. Then he says Estevez never warned Pavlik before the deduction. He warned Pavlik more than once.

This can still turn on any Pavlik combo. He does have that ability. Whether he can find Bernard is another story.

Pavlik with a nice combo. HARD straight right from Pavlik, right on the button. No reaction from Bernard, though. Hop with a body shot. Every time Kelly tries to flurry, Bernard ties him up. He’s a fucking genius in the ring. You could’ve punched his HoF ticket well before this fight, but anyone that even thinks about it right now is brain-dead.

Kelly looks fucking dead in the corner. Maybe the weight doesn’t suit him. I know they talk about not draining, but he’s bigger, stronger, and tougher than guys at 160. 170? He looks positively mortal.

Pavlik is lost. The fight is lost. He has nothing. Hopkins swarms, Pavlik looks like he doesn’t know what to do in that situation. Unbelievable domination from a 43-year old man against one of the best young fighters on the planet. He’s owning this round, too. With 20 seconds left, Pavlik has landed two power punches.

I bet Bob Arum is straight-up shitting his pants.

Why is everybody so surprised? I don’t get it. What were you all expecting? A KO from Pavlik or something?

Pavlik is a KO artist. Hopkins has a steel chin. Styles make fights and this one was a bad one for Pavlik. He never had a chance to beat Hop on the cards unless he has a high activity level (Calzaghe/Taylor) or can outbox him (NOT gonna happen with Pavlik). Pavlik has neither.

Pavlik-Hopkins R12

Kelly has to knock Bernard out. There is no other option.

Hopkins is coming out throwing, and tagging Kelly with whatever he wants. Hopkins is wailing on Kelly Pavlik in the 12th round of a fight he’s got running away. Pavlik with a right, Hopkins all but makes fun of it. Seriously.

Left hook Hopkins. Flurry from Hopkins, just punishing Pavlik at center ring. Pavlik has had his ass kicked in tonight. Bernard Hopkins has made him look like a nobody, and Kelly Pavlik is not a nobody. He’s a damn good fighter.

Bernard Hopkins, though, is absolutely great.
