Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Jermain Taylor v. Jeff Lacy
The HBO broadcast starts at 10:15 ET, and we'll be live and ready to go for the night's main event in Nashville. It is the only fight televised in the States by HBO.
As an aside, I want to note that Taylor-Lacy is the 100th round-by-round coverage for Bad Left Hook. It's actually a bit more than that if you count two cards within the same post (HBO v. Showtime nights here and there), but this is Fight Night/Fight Day/whatever post No. 100.

well
From what I’m gathering by the HBO start time and the fact that there is still one 12-round fight and part of another 10-rounder left to go in Nashville, it seems they’ll start with the goddamn Calzaghe-Jones replay. Bleh. I hate the replay going first.

Taylor-Lacy R1
Taylor flicking his jab, Lacy with 1-2s that are easily picked off. Jab and a missed long right from Taylor. Taylor popping the jab a little bit now. Lacy wants to come over with the right but he’s not finding it.
Taylor doubling on the jab, swings a hard right and a left hook, the right lands a bit. Taylor with two left hooks. Lacy backs down from another left hook. Lacy with the right, blocked, Taylor with two jabs. Right over the top by Taylor, Lacy answers with a nice one of his own and drives Taylor to the ropes, which doesn’t last.
Fairly safe first round from both, but you can see the potential for fireworks.

Taylor-Lacy R2
Lacy landed five punches in the first round. Taylor was at 12. They threw about the same.
Lacy’s jab just is not good enough to get through. There’s a right from Lacy. Rights collide. Stiff jab from Taylor. I like what he’s doing so far. He’s just boxing, which he’s better at than Lacy. Three punch combo — two jabs and a right — from Jermain. Very nice.
Yes, Manny, he did abandon that beautiful left jab for a while. IN WHICH FIGHTS DID THAT HAPPEN?
Jermain with a right and a couple more shots. Lacy tries to combo up, but he’s just not quick enough. His attacks are generally cut short by Taylor’s nice, timely countering. Lacy goes to the body with about 35 seconds left in the round, which his corner asked for between rounds. Taylor with an uppercut. Lacy tries a lead right, easily picked off again.
Taylor with a HARD right, left hook follows. Another nice round for Jermain.
Taylor 10-9
Taylor 20-18

Roger Bloodworth: “Box the bitch.”
People say “bitch” so often that it’s lost all pop.
Jabs from Taylor as Larry wonders what happened to the left hook. Fuck, I dunno, maybe he had a big surgery on his left shoulder and it never beat a top fighter anyway.
This is unfolding essentially as I expected. Taylor is a much better fighter than is Jeff Lacy. Taylor stuns Lacy, who wobbles after a combo, and then Lacy clinches up! And now Lacy literally dives at Taylor and hugs him. He’s hurt.
Jermain ducks back, pops another jab. Larry, by the way, is awful tonight. I wish Kellerman wasn’t getting shittier by the fight.
Taylor swarms Lacy and Jeff ties up again. Yeah, Jeff just…this top level is not for him. Taylor calms down, lets the round finish, and takes another round.

Jim, Harold’s gotta tell ya…
Taylor unloading again with Lacy on the ropes, but nothing lands too flush. Lacy tries to charge back, but to no avail. Lacy, when he does build some forward momentum, gets clinched masterfully by Taylor. Hard counter right by Taylor, Lacy holds and hits again. That’s not the first time he’s done that tonight. Lampley says the third time — sounds right.
Nice, involved crowd in Nashville, too.
Lacy eats more shots, and there’s a HUGE right from Taylor. Lacy, again, is hurt. And he holds on yet again. Lacy is escaping a knockout so far, and that’s about it. Another right, and another! Taylor is dominating Lacy. Just kicking his ass.
Lacy charges and chases, lands nothing. Taylor with RIPPING body shots near the bell, two or three left hooks got through.

Taylor-Lacy R5
I’m kind of hoping Taylor just closes this out soon. For one thing an impressive KO of Lacy would be a big deal for him, and for another it might rid us of Lacy. I have just never cared for Lacy as a fighter.
Lacy charging, gets turned around and gets hit again. HARD RIGHT JEFF LACY!! TAYLOR GOES DOWN!
Wait, WHAT? Laurence Cole says no knockdown? What the fuck. Wow, Lacy got jobbed on that call. Thanks a lot, Cole, you idiot.
Lacy is charging now. Taylor is clearly hurting a little. That was a legit knockdown.
Taylor gets his legs back a bit and lands a counter shot. Taylor’s laying on Lacy a lot right now, and he’s also fighting going backwards. A huge change from the first four rounds. Taylor with body shots, Lacy drills him with another right that sends Taylor reeling across the ring!
Fuck it — I’m giving Lacy the 10-8, because that knockdown was real.

Lacy won that round either way, for the record, at least on my card.
Taylor wants to go back to the jab. He needs to. And if these stammering dolts don’t stop talking about how Lacy isn’t throwing a lot of left hooks I’m going to lose it. He hasn’t thrown the big left hooks in forever.
Taylor swinging with left hooks that miss. Taylor with two jabs, and he wants distance again. Taylor stings him. Taylor working a lot better this round than last, and Jeff isn’t finding the power shots anymore. The jabs are back and he’s boxing again. Taylor, I mean.
Vicious right-left combo from Taylor, and these two are giving each other some mean looks, I’ll tell you that.

Y’know, I can’t really take that extra point from Taylor. He didn’t make the call. So I’ve got 59-55, same as Hurrld. Now that I’m out of the moment, I can see clearly. The rain is gone.
Jermain is fighting well again this round, simply outboxing Lacy, making him look slow. Lacy tries the right, eats a jab for his effort. Lacy actually lands a jab coming in, amazing. Taylor pops back. Lacy eating more right hands in the final minute. They’re throwing some heavy shots. These guys are both fighting hungry, and Lacy isn’t making a bad accounting of himself. He’s just not good enough to box with Taylor. He has to turn this into a brawl.

Lacy attacking, trying to jab his way in still. It’s admirable, but it’s not going to work. Little bit of wrestling around this round. Taylor warned for a second time for holding, I think it was.
Taylor peppering with jabs at mid-ring in the final minute. We’re at the point now where the heavy shots are subsiding some, Taylor knows what he can do to win, and knows what Lacy can’t do. It is what it is.

Taylor’s mouthpiece comes out about 54 seconds into the round.
Taylor with a right, stiff jab, loads up a right but doesn’t throw it. Taylor with great jabs. Lacy’s going to need a miracle. Taylor moving in and out, controlling all the distance, landing almost at will, being very efficient, and wearing Lacy out. It’s really as simply described as that. Jeff Lacy rocked again on the ropes. He’s looking tired and like his will is bending dramatically.

Jim, Harold has something else he’s got to tell you.
Larry wonders about Jermain’s stamina. I think Larry’s trying to find a flaw.
Meanwhile, Taylor continues to dominate and dictate the action. If Lacy does think he can see something, he eats a jab right when he might want to act. HARD right from Taylor, beautiful counter shot. Another right follows up and Lacy starts laying on him again.
Taylor all but begs Lacy to meet him center ring again. Lacy reluctantly obliges. Lacy’s ducking and jiving and trying to bob and weave, but mostly he’s just getting punched.

13 seconds of no action and then Lacy’s tape needs work.
Halfway into the round they start talking Taylor-Calzaghe. I’ll tell you how it would go. Calzaghe would pepper him a lot and shut him down. That’d be my bet anyway.
Taylor pumping the jab some more. Potshot right hand from Lacy. VICIOUS right hand from Taylor really knocks the crap out of Lacy, and Taylor is throwing big. Nashville crowd stands in approval. They’ve been great. Yet another reason to get more fights out of the fake Vegas crowds.
Yet another round for Jermain Taylor. Lacy has fared no better, really, than he did against Joe Calzaghe.

I have liked this performance from Taylor, and I also think it speaks well of Lacy as a tough dude. He survived a couple scares, put in his best effort, and just couldn’t get it done. I think Jeff knows this is it for fights on this level. He’s 31, he’s given no impression he can seriously compete with the best in the world, and now he has some things to consider. Taylor unloads near the end of the round, throwing down the stretch. Nice stuff. Good show for Jermain. Smell ya later, Left Hook.

He’s trying the best he can, can’t be easy replacing a legend like Larry. But, Max is a pretty good guy, he’s knowledgeable and he loves the sport. Give him time. Already, I find that he provides some insights that are good as the pros besides him and Jim. And, he’s certainly more lucid than Larry during the fight.

I had it on mute and kept tabs, but did catch the finish as it was between rounds
Chris Nelson of Bloody Elbow described it this way, which works best:
“Lesnar starched Randy with a right straight and hammerfisted him out of this world.”
