Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Paul Williams v. Verno Phillips
The show starts at 10pm ET on HBO, and we'll be here with live, round-by-round coverage and scoring. The holiday weekend is winding down, and what better way to relieve yourself the stress of wanting to tackle family members than watch grown men paid to punch one another?
If you're new to the site, the round-by-round takes place in the comments of this post, with no refreshing whatsoever needed.

Fun fact
Verno Phillips has been knocked out once in his 10 losses.
In his fifth pro fight.
I was 2 years old the last time Verno Phillips was knocked out.

Arreola-Walker R1
Walker with a right and then a clean left. Jab to the gut. Walker really throwing leather, and Arreola pops him with a counter right. Arreola is covering up and letting Walker punch away. Arreola showing no desire to start the punching, just standing at the ropes and waiting around. Uppercut by Walker, left, right lands! Walker is GUNNING! Oh, he wants this bad.
Arreola tries to counter out of a parried right, but fails to land. Walker pawing his jab. Counter right from Walker, very nice. Ripping left hook to the body from Walker, and a short right lands after. Arreola looks like crap so far, but he might be waiting, too.
Arreola does land a left near the end of the round, but a great opening round for Walker.

Arreola-Walker R2
Walker threw 106 punches in the first round. Goddamn.
Walker throwing again to start the second. Walker to the gut, left, two rights to Arreola’s chin and down goes Chris! He’s stunned, too. And bleeding a bit.
Arreola tagged again with left hooks, straight rights. Man, Walker is all over him. Arreola with a very weak right. Right from Walker, and he’s just wearing Arreola out right now. This is the end of the hype for Chris Arreola unless something big happens for him.
Walker loses his mouthpiece, so we get a brief stoppage. Arreola uses it to try to clear blood from his nose.
Arreola throwing now! Left from Arreola, right hand! WALKER IS HURT AND DOWN GOES TRAVIS WALKER! WHOO WEE WE GOT US A BARNBURNER, BABY!
Right hand Arreola, and he’s unloading with lefts and rights! What a brawl this is! Left, right, WALKER IS DOWN AGAIN! Holy shit!
Left hook, right hand Arreola! Uppercut lands! WILD SWINGING ON BOTH SIDES! AND THE ROUND ENDS!
One of those knockdowns may have been a push, but this is a hoot.

Williams-Phillips R1
Williams goes to the body with a combo, Phillips pops him back with a left hook upstairs and gets away from the ropes. Verno is staying away from Paul’s power quite well in the first half of the round. He’s making Paul move. Paul with a long punch that lands, Verno hits him back and gets away again. Not a bad idea.
Accidental headbutt, small bit of blood from Williams’ right eye. Getting bigger than “small,” too.
Busy little round, without much of significance. That makes some sense, I think.
Williams 10-9, but no runaway — Verno’s gameplan is the right one

Williams-Phillips R2
Phillips with a nice right hand. Left from Williams, Verno misses a wild uppercut. Right to the body from Paul. Williams with a flurry, pinning Phillips against the ropes, but Phillips skillfully makes most of it miss and lands a pot shot. Williams with a hook to the body, Phillips with an uppercut landing nicely. Combo from Phillips. He’s catching Paul right now.
Left hook from Phillips lands square. Right lands. That cut on Williams isn’t awful, but isn’t getting any better for sure. I gotta say, I love what Phillips is doing right now. Williams ends the round with some great body punching, though.

Williams with a gorgeous right hook to the body. Phillips is loading up on wild shots, getting away from moving and trying to slug. This is a bad idea. Williams is wailing away now, especially to the body. Great stuff.
Left from Williams, but Phillips gets one back. Hook to the body again. Man, he is punishing him to the breadbasket. That cut’s really going, too.
1-2 from Williams to the face, and back to the body. But Verno got one in, too. Right hook to the body from Paul, Verno grazes him with a counter shot. Williams with a NICE bunch of shots against the ropes. And the referee is pausing to look at the cut.
We’re good to go, so time in.
Nice round for Paul Williams as this one comes to a close.

Williams-Phillips R4
BOBIGOTTATELLYA!
Williams still looking to work to the body. Paul staggers Phillips off-balance, or maybe that was just Verno throwing himself off. I think the latter. Williams is chasing Phillips to the ropes over and over, and that spring he had earlier is going by the wayside with all that body punching adding up.
Straight left from Williams, really good punch that may have shaken Verno a bit. But Phillips recovers well. Left hook from Verno, then he swings himself around punching again and this time actually falls over. Back to the body goes Williams.
Verno’s running out of answers to Paul Williams’ questions, and he’s tiring badly.

Williams-Phillips R5
Paul Williams is, simply, breaking Verno Phillips apart piece by piece. This is turning into a destruction. Papa tries to sell me on Verno’s win over Spinks, hoping the viewing audience didn’t see it, I guess. Meanwhile, Williams keeps drilling him with that right to the body. Verno is a tough son of a gun, which we knew.
Verno eats shots to the gut, and throws back one loaded right hand. Left to the body from Verno. This is turning into the Paul Williams show, and fast. Verno hasn’t been able to get any momentum at all.

Williams-Phillips R6
Williams catches Phillips in the corner about a minute in and starts pounding away. Phillips is sort of on the run now, and he’s running uphill.
This is turning into a bit of a nasty beating, honestly. Verno is game as they come but he’s getting hammered out there. He’s not busy enough, not fast enough, and is losing it at distance and inside. BIG right from Williams. Left to the body from Williams. Verno throws a couple decent shots at the end of the round.
Williams 10-9
Williams 60-54

Williams-Phillips R7
WHOA, 40 seconds into the round we get one of the most violent feet tangling slips you’ll ever see. Both guys go down and hard.
And in the second minute, Phillips is getting drilled to the body again, blocking lots of head shots though. So that’s something. He’s standing there covering or taking either way, and not throwing back. Williams waiting, and Phillips starts winging wild shots. Verno is gassing.
Hey, Bob Papa said “hell”! We’ll have to wash HIS motherfucking mouth out after Arreola’s.

Williams-Phillips R8
Phillips keeps trying to find a way to dent Williams, bless his heart, but it keeps being the same result, and he’s out of options at this point. Without a miracle shot, he’s toast.
Williams is a little slower this round, maybe halfway taking a breather. Still, he’s dictating the action and landing the shots. Williams chopping the rights and throwing the body hooks, and he catches all of one shot from Verno Phillips in exchange. He ends the round battering Verno some more.
Williams 10-9
Williams 80-72

Doc stops it
Best way to end it. Phillips would never stop coming, this prevents him from getting hurt without a KO that wouldn’t come.

Anyways much props to Phillips… he tooks alot of punishment and looked like Andrade after a 12 rounder…
Williams cements his place in the 160-147 range…
