Helenius doesn't impress me.
Stylistically, very similar to Klitschko (fighting at a distance with the pawing jab), but not nearly as big and doesn’t seem to have the same kind of power.
I’ll try doing RBR on Abraham-Marquez, if I can. Guests are coming over soon, just not sure when.

Abraham coming out much more aggressive than he usually does in round 1. Marquez dancing on the outside, not throwing much, mostly jabs. Abraham jabbing from the outside and lunging in on vicious hooks to the body. Action slows down a lot in the last couple minutes of the round. Marquez doesn’t take advantage, and the one time he gets inside, he got tied up right away.

Marquez pumping the jab but hitting all gloves. Abraham barely throwing, but the crowd goes crazy whenever he does. Marquez finally lands a couple solid shots to the body. Looks like a cut opened up on Marquez on a jab, or at least he has an abrasion. 1-2 1-2 by Marquez, all landing on the gloves. Abraham finally throwing in the last minute, but not landing much. Marquez probably throwing three times as many good punches as Abraham this round; Marquez landed maybe three good shots, but Abraham landed none.

Marquez being aggressive. Marquez gets inside, but got nailed with an uppercut. Marquez back to trying to jab away on the outside. Abraham lands a couple solid punches to the body, and has been effective at keeping Marquez from getting inside. Marquez not hitting Abraham with too much, Abraham lands another good combo, hurting Marquez for the second time in the round. Momentum-shifting round, if Abraham chooses to take advantage.

Marquez comes out aggressive and nails Abraham with a number of good body shots. Abraham turtles up at first, but as soon as Marquez stops, he comes back aggressive and nails him with harder shots. Marquez’s face all red and puffy, and he looks a bit winded. Marquez gets back inside, but Abraham is even winning those exchanges.
Abraham fakes a low-blow, gets a break. Abraham now landing some massive punches on Marquez, winging it for about 10 seconds in a manner atypical of Abraham. Bernstein says Abraham won the round in the last 30 seconds, but I thought Abraham dominated the whole round.

Marquez comes out aggressive again. It’s a replay of Round 4 – pins him against the ropes, Abraham turtles, Marquez lands a number of good body blows. Abraham doesn’t come back as aggressively this time. Marquez comes in and lands another combo, Abraham just not throwing anything this round. Now starting to throw lead rights, which are landing on Marquez way too easily. Arthur picking it up in the last 45 seconds, as usual, lands a couple decent body shots, then backs off. Close round, but I think Marquez did enough early to win the round. Could go either way, in Germany, it probably goes for Abraham with teh judges.

Abraham now working behind the jab, coming in, landing some good shots. Nice combo by Abraham, high and low. Just pounding the ribs almost at will now. Arthur just absolutely smashing the ribs. Calzaghe/Lacy punchstats
Could someone please post a link to the official punchstats from the Joe vs Lacy fight?
I’ve been trying to find them for a while, and can’t find them. Barry McGuigan just said Joe HIT Lacy with 1007 punches in the fight, surely that must be erroneous? Maybe he threw 1000+ punches in the fight, but connected? I can’t have that.

Salita-Campos R1
Salita’s height advantage is four inches but his reach is only one inch, so we’ll see if it means much. I figure more the vast difference in skill level will mean more.
Campos is game early, trying to come inside with left hooks, but Salita is able to avoid pretty much everything. Salita wants to keep Campos at a distance and seems to want little to do with an inside fight. Kellerman is already taking a dump on Salita, calling him nothing more than "a local attraction.
First round ends with Campos looking to land big shots. Honestly, Salita didn’t do much to win this round, and I’m giving it to Campos mostly on effort and trying to push action.

Salita-Campos R2
Hurrld gave the opening round to Salita. Sure, whatever.
The crowd, if anyone’s interested, is dead. It’s not as empty as many cards are at this point since there’s no casino in the building, but they’re clearly disinterested.
Salita is turning up the heat a little more this round. He’s clearly the more skilled fighter, and the experience against even decent opposition is making this look easy for him in most respects. He’s trying to double and triple the jab, upstairs and downstairs, and he’s throwing flurries that look nice even if not landing too much.
Campos is doing the best he can, and he’s testing Salita.

Salita-Campos R3
Campos eats a couple nice left hooks at the start of the round, pretty much right after the bell. Salita with a little left to the body, and I think he’s gaining confidence. Campos misses a right, and Salita lands a quick counter. Campos is really working his ass off to land in combinations. I’ll tell you, Derrick Campos is making a competitive fight out of this thing. This may speak more to the utter non-specialness of Dmitriy Salita than anything, but this — while no thriller — is not boring and is being made interesting by the Topeka club guy.
Salita with a couple body shots, then a left hook to seal the round.

Salita-Campos R4
Campos UNLOADING in the corner on Salita, who eats a few, dodges most, and escapes before he can get hurt. Campos looking to work the body, trying to land hard shots. Salita digging to the body, tons of left hooks coming at Campos’ midsection. Campos tries to fire back, unsuccessfully. Nice stuff from Salita, he used his advantages in speed and accuracy and, well, mostly everything. I’d like to see Salita press more; this is a guy, even without great power, he should knock out. Nothing against Campos, really.
Salita keeps working the body this round, and Campos seems content to absorb them, or unable to stop them. Campos walks into a right. Campos hammers away with a counter right and a left hook, showing some real grit. He knows how much this fight means for a career that has started 17-5.

First half of the round is Salita basically dominating pacing, keeping Campos from turning it into a pier-sixer, which is clearly all Campos wants. He probably knows that’s his best (only?) shot. And good for him. Campos has fought a decent little fight.
Campos wins a mid-ring exchange, then throws two hard uppercuts, one mostly blocked and the second totally missed. The rest of the round is uneventful. This is becoming marginally one-sided; Salita is just better, as expected.

This is the point in a fight like this — unexciting, but not awful, and where you have one man obviously more talented than the other — where a mind can begin to wander. Campos has almost no shot to win this fight; it would take something very special. As much as Lampley wants to try to compare Campos to Stevie Johnston, he’s not Stevie.
Nice empty crowd shot prior to the round, too. Lookin’ good.
Another rather easy round for Salita. It’s not much to talk about, and it’s not much to watch. Again, this is not a BAD fight. It just is what it is, to put it simply.

Lampley suggests the fight might be closer than Harold’s 5-1 for Salita. Couple of digging Salita shots to the body. Lampley and Co. have basically stopped talking, just letting the fight happen. There is, at this point, very little to discuss. Again — it is what it is.

Lampley notes that Campos has never won a fight past the sixth round. I don’t think that’s going to change tonight.
Lampley, Max and Manny haven’t crapped on this yet, but I’m getting the feeling they’re going to. They sound flat-out bored. Max is struggling to commentate on what’s going on. “The question is, at a certain point, how many developmental fights do you need to see?”
Dmitriy nails him with a mouthpiece-clearing shot. Campos hits him with a couple. They’re replacing the mouthpiece now. Campos unloads with some heavy shots, really letting his hands go. BIG shot to Salita’s chin! Campos is throwing everything he’s got! Salita clinches up!
Campos is wincing from body shots at this point, but he steals a round with maximum overdrive aggressiveness. Who made who?

Campos throwing more flurries, trying to keep Salita against the ropes. Campos might really be the harder puncher; it’s not saying a TON, but it’s something for him. Campos’ mouthpiece is sent flying by another left hook. Manny: “Looks like a cheap mouthpiece.” Hey, maybe later you can come to my house and point out things that are cheap…
I appreciate how hard Campos has fought, but he’s just not good enough. Salita is also not good enough to be anything more than a contender, I don’t think. But again, I can’t ask more than this from these two fighters.

Campos is pressing Salita again in the first minute, hitting Salita with some decent stuff. Campos is really bringing heat in this 12th round, and I love seeing that. Salita has stood in there and fought with him, too, and that takes guts. They end the fight throwing haymakers. Good for them. FIne, fine fight. Not at all a bad opener, and I’ll give both guys credit. Nothing amazing, but totally watchable. Tough showing from Campos, and a nice win for Salita.

Here’s hoping for some Drunken Master fireworks. I think he’s a very live dog, as he always can be.
Clash of heads warning 32 seconds into the fight. Augustus isn’t getting dumb so far, but he will. He is who he is. Augustus is the guy pressing, though. Figueroa looks like he wants to feel what Emanuel has. Emanuel takes a nice shot and showboats. He showboats some more.

it was a big fight
But when they agreed to do it, Judah had a mandatory with Carlos Baldomir to deal with, and he was upset in the stunner of the year (maybe the decade?) That took some heat off of Mayweather-Judah.

Figueroa-Augustus R2
This is only an eight-rounder, if anyone’s wondering.
Augustus is throwing some nice combinations, and he pushed Figueroa back a little bit there. Figueroa is trying to fight back, but he seems to be succumbing to some of the pressure. Augustus is REALLY putting the heat on the stove this round, and he’s testing Figueroa’s mettle.
Augustus pushes Figueroa into the corner and works him over a little. Frankie is going to need some good corner advice about this round, because he might be in real trouble.

I see. Is the Augustus fight at Welter?
What surprises me is that Judah stopped Cosme Rivera in like 3 rounds and Rivera gave Berto all he could handle. Judah should stick to 140 pounds for now. I’d like to see him succeed at that level.

Augustus knocked back with a body shot. 1-2 combo from Augustus. Boy, Emanuel can still go. Figueroa is just in for a tough night — I’m sure he knew he would be. Nobody’s going to judge Emanuel by his record.
Nice right from Augustus. This is an entertaining little fight, as I did expect it might be. Figueroa has landed some better shots this round, and he managed to keep Emanuel off his ass.

Augustus stalking again as Lampley wonders whether or not Figueroa might have preferred a 10-rounder. Manny thinks it benefits Figueroa. I don’t know. Whatever. I’m surprised it’s not a 10-rounder.
They keep calling Augustus “the old man.” He’s three and six years younger than tonight’s main eventers.
This is kind of back-and-forth. Nothing majorly exciting, but good enough action, as you’d expect from any Augustus fight, and very competitive.

recap
By the way, when I started talking with those Jones fans at the beer place I mentioned above, I suggested that they were crazy if they really thought Jones was as live a dog as they thought. One of them asked me if I like Joe because he was white (we wasn’t being a dick about it—it’s often taken as normal in my neighborhood here in Brooklyn that race plays into your favorite athletes). I told him I thought they are both assholes, but that Jones was an older asshole. Then he went off on how Joe was so full of shit about Pavlik… and he suddenly morphed into SC right before my eyes!
Just kidding about the last part. But I have run into several guys here in BK who have heard of Bad Left Hook, including the editor of the graphic novel division of D.C. Comics, who is a huge boxing fan and was more impressed that I sometimes write here than he was that I have a book coming out next year.

Both start showboating about a minute in, and it’s Figueroa who’s throwing the good shots now. Augustus starts showboating. This is back-and-forth showboating now. Fantastic. “Aw, c’mon!!!” That’s some great refereeing. Not “Keep ’em up, guys!”
“Aw, c’mon!!!”
Y’know, for 25 bones, I have no complaints so far. For 50, I may have had a couple. Augustus is landing a lot of power shots this round, and Figueroa’s early lead has evaporated. This is a decent little fight.

Another enjoyable round. I’m honestly not doing my best job tonight. We’re talking old Roy, and while I’m watching the fights, I’m not saying a lot. This is what you’d expect from a mid-tier Emanuel Augustus fight. Figueroa is holding his own, but I think he got more than he bargained for.

Compubox stats have this dead even. Hurrld has it 58-56 for Augustus.
Lampley notes the two “exceptionally inexperienced” judge crews for the first two fights. Was that another price-saving effort from Square Ring and Calzaghe Promotions?
There truly haven’t been a whole lot of good, flush shots landed in this fight. It’s a nice eight-rounder, but eh. I like when guys get hit, frankly. And this round has slowed way down, and is stealable with 40 seconds to go.
Figueroa with some counters, and I think he’s taking the round. Augustus lands down the home stretch of the round.

Final round! Fight’s up for grabs to me. Hurrld has it 68-65 for Augustus. I think the entire team has sort of ignored the nice things that Figueroa has done. I think it’s a toss-up right now.
Augustus coming out just WINGING, and the crowd rises big time about halfway in. But again they seem like they’re ignoring that Figueroa is landing, too. It’s Augustus pressing, but Figueroa isn’t shitting his pants. He’s fighting back.
45 seconds left, round is again up for grabs.
Nice right from Augustus. Shot to the body from Figueroa. Figueroa with a couple more shots. They trade inside at center ring. I think Augustus just barely stole this round, and I’m scoring it a draw.

Zab looks in good shape, but when doesn’t he?
Quick jabs. Judah winging shots, hoping for a highlight reel KO maybe. There is, uh, really not much happening in this first round. Judah so far is putting on the stinker performance of the night. Judah’s hand speed looks as good as it always does. Judah wins the round more because Johnson did nothing than he did anything special.

STIFF left from Judah clearly hurts Johnson a little bit. Then we go back to cat-and-mouse, where Zab’s hand speed is keeping Johnson from doing anything at all, whether or not Zab is landing anything himself. Judah sticks Johnson with another sharp, fast left hand that seems to absolutely surprise Johnson — like in that it even happened. Judah moves with some right hooks, then misses another a third. This is a matter of time.
Judah 10-9
Judah 20-18

Boy, that was fucking odd. Judah just ignored his dad and refused to interact with him between rounds. Bizarre.
Johnson has some of the skinniest legs you’ll find in boxing. They go to Max talking to Yoel Judah in the corner. Yoel just says, “He know what he gotta do.”
Judah is cut outside the left eye. And he doesn’t seem to be handling it very well. Judah’s getting sloppy, and now there’s a cut over his RIGHT eye. Oh man.
That was a really weird round.
Johnson 10-9
Judah 29-28

Judah needs to pretty much just go nuts, because I think it’s obvious he can knock Johnson out whenever he feels like it. Never a dull moment with Zab Judah, I’ll say that.
Did Steve Smoger just call Judah “boo”? “You alright, boo?”
Two jabs from Judah. This is the least entertaining of the fights, but I think this thing is about to be stopped, too. That cut is bad and not worth risking anything, you know? I won’t be upset if it’s stopped. We’ve seen the better man.
Judah 10-9

Not much to describe, really — Judah’s a lot better than Johnson. Judah’s got two cuts, one bad. Johnson doesn’t belong in this fight. Judah’s on the comeback trail again. This is no more important than Ruben Galvan or Ryan Davis or Edwin Vazquez. It is proving nothing that we don’t already know about Zab Judah. It is here only because Judah still has something of a name. Zab Judah is who we thought he was. We let him off the hook!

Chopping hammer right from Judah. And then he plays around some more. You know, just finish him, Zab. Show some killer instinct. There is NO REASON Judah doesn’t finish this guy, but you could’ve said the same thing about Ryan Davis and Edwin Vazquez.

I feel like Manny Steward talking to Wlad Klitschko entering round 12 of his snoozer with Ibragimov (this has been nowhere near that bad): “There’s no reason this man should go 12 rounds with you…”
Weird cornering before the round. Yoel wants Judah to “bang the fuck” out of Johnson, and Johnson’s corner calls for him to go out on his shield.
Judah spends a few moments talking to the crowd. Johnson stands there like a dork.

Tom Jones
Is Tom Jones singing the national Welsch anthem again? Well, then again, there is not an open field to choose from when it comes to that.

Calzaghe-Jones R1
Calzaghe more active for the first 45 seconds. Jones with a quick right. Calzaghe lets the leather fly, with a couple of body shots scoring. Big “USA” chant goes up.
DOWN GOES CALZAGHE!!!!
He’s MUCH more hurt than he was against Hopkins!
He’s up and coming back into the fight, and Roy is winging shots like he used to. Calzaghe throwing! Looks like Joe will get out of the round. And he does.
Whoo-WEE!!!
Jones 10-8

Calzaghe-Jones R2
Calzaghe with a small cut on the bridge of his nose. Jones kind of smiling as he tries to block Calzaghe’s punches. Joe’s getting himself off balance a lot. Nice combo from Jones. Jones looks just as fast as Calzaghe so far. He’s dropping his arms and dancing. He’s Roy, if only for a moment.
Body shot from Calzaghe, and Calzaghe is now the man showboating and landing. THese two, so far, are showmen and fighters. That flurry was Joe all over.
Calzaghe landing little flurries, slipping the right hand and trying to work the body to wear Jones down. Calzaghe’s legs are back, but Roy catches him with a counter right! Kellerman compares Calzaghe to Trinidad in January; honestly, Kellerman is getting horrible.
Good round.

Calzaghe-Jones R3
Hurrld gave the second to Roy. Not for me.
Calzaghe wants to corner Roy and just unloading with a flurry, and he lands a few before Roy gets out. Joe takes a right to the body. Sharp right from Calzaghe after a body shot from Jones. Calzaghe flurrying with Jones pinned against the ropes again. Jones is one at a time, Calzaghe doing his thing. Calzaghe is showboating and OVERWHELMING with hand speed right now. This is the fight they promised.
Left hook from Roy. Calzaghe comes back with three shots, including another digging right to the body. Calzaghe is starting to tear into Jones with his usual multi-punch combos. Jones is blocking a lot of it, but we know Calzaghe does not tire. Roy seems to be hoping he will. Calzaghe is letting his hands drop, throwing, and ROy is just covering his face.
Left from Jones. Calzaghe is having a big, big round, though, and he punctuates it with shucking and jiving, landing shots along the way.
Calzaghe 10-9
28-28

Calzaghe-Jones R4
Jones is trying more early this round to keep Calzaghe at a distance. It’s not doing much for him offensively, but at least he’s not getting peppered with combinations now. Roy backed into the corner again, and Calzaghe rips to the body. Calzaghe is generaling the shit out of the ring, if you know what I’m saying. He’s taking Roy where he wants to.
Calzaghe with a four-punch combo. Roy just doesn’t seem to have the ability to find counter openings, and he refuses to lead the action, or else Joe just won’t let him. Probably the latter, really.
Joe takes Roy to the corner again, presses him to the ropes, and fires away. Roy with a short right, but here’s more Calzaghe corner work. 3, 4 punch combos, Jones trying to find just one counter. Jones with TWO NICE RIGHTS, and Calzaghe postures and drops his hands. Nice finish to the round for Jones, but another Calzaghe round.
Calzaghe 10-9

Calzaghe-Jones R5
Joe with another right to the body, and again Jones finds himself against the ropes. He comes away, and then goes right back. He comes out, and Joe stalks him RIGHT BACK to the corner again. Calzaghe with a straight left, three rights to the body, he goes upstairs with a flurry, and Roy has one right hand to offer. This is exactly what I was talking about in the pre-fight analysis. This is 100% it. I’m no genius, and I don’t think this was hard to see, but it re-iterates my main point: Jones, so far, is overmatched besides one wrist shot to the side of the head.
Jones with a nice shot, Calzaghe fires back to the body and hits him upstairs again. Calzaghe again to the body. Jones is really getting outclassed. Lampley thinks the round is on the table with 50 seconds to go; I do not see that at all.
And Calzaghe unloads with ROy on the ropes again. BIG left from Joe! Jones with a left hook that scrapes. Jones’ left eye is swelling. Right from Jones. Calzaghe takes another round.
This is a good ass fight, too.

Calzaghe-Jones R6
Hurrld has it 47-47 now.
Jones again is taken to the ropes at Calzaghe’s will. Jones simply has no real answer for Calzaghe’s volume of activity; he can’t throw that many punches, he doesn’t want to throw that many punches, and his one punch at a time offensive strategy is simply not going to win him any rounds against Calzaghe, who is doing his thing just as he did against Kessler, and as he did in his most effective moments against Bernard Hopkins.
Jones with one right hand, then he gets on his bike for a moment to get the hell away from Calzaghe. Jones lets himself stay in the corner now, but Calzaghe isn’t going in as hard. Roy is unable to do a whole lot right now. He’s doing the best he can, but Calzaghe is younger, fresher, and it seems perhaps even stronger. Roy with a little combo, nothing notable. Jones with an uppercut! Maybe Roy’s best punch of the night.
B-Hop is in the house.

Calzaghe-Jones R7
57-56 for Joe on Hurrld’s card.
Jones seems determined in the first 40 seconds to stay center ring. Joe with a lunging left, doesn’t land clean. But he has pushed Roy to the ropes again. He seems fully content to press Roy, take him to the ropes, unload, and win rounds with that volume punching. Jones with two counter lefts. Lead right doesn’t land.
Three body punches from Calzaghe, and here he comes again, taking Roy to the ropes. Roy’s hurt, and bleeding above the left eye. Joe knows what he’s doing now — he knows Roy is on death’s doorstep for this night.
Roy keeps trying, but Joe keeps coming. Into the corner, taunting Jones all the way over there. Calzaghe is ignoring Roy’s best shots, and he’s dominating this fight. Jones is doing the absolute best that his 39-year old body will let him.
Jones is bleeding badly from that cut. I don’t know how much longer this is going to go.

Calzaghe-Jones R8
Great replay of the cut-causing left hand from Joe. Perfect shot.
Joe throwing punches in bunches, showboating, throwing Roy’s timing off with bullshittin’ and dancin’, and continuing to keep up what makes him the fighter he has become over the years. He is unlike any fighter that even Jones has ever seen.
And that cut is still gushing.
Jones being battered in the corner again, with Calzaghe very purposely targeting the eye. Nice three punches from Jones, but Calzaghe shows no regard for them, really.
I’ll say this. You will not see Roy Jones quit. There is no quit in this guy. He is a proud, proud man, and has every reason to be one.
Calzaghe whipping away again, landing those long, lanky, slapping shots that take Roy into the ropes, and allow Joe to beat on him. Jones is throwing what he’s got, it seems. He knows that cut is bad. Calzaghe finishes the round smacking Jones around, swamping him and refusing to relent. Another great Joe Calzaghe performance.

Calzaghe-Jones R9
Just after the bell, they check the cut and let it continue. Good on the doctors. Don’t take Roy out like that. Don’t let him get hurt, but don’t take him out until it’s a genuine problem.
The pressure keeps up. Jones, God bless the guy, seems to be seriously searching every moment for something to throw, somewhere he can land, a way to counter, a way to fire back. He’s not finding it. Joe Calzaghe is beating him, and it is not close.
At this moment, I hope this is the last we see of Roy Jones. He will go out with a loss to a great fighter. There is no more for him to do. He’s proven it all. He gave this his best shot. Calzaghe is better.
Calzaghe scores more to end the round, with Jones throwing vicious shots that miss badly. He can’t find Calzaghe, can’t see him, can’t stop him, can’t hit him.

Calzaghe-Jones R10
Enzo to Joe: “There’s nothin’ left in him…”
I believe he is right.
Calzaghe comes out of his corner with two shots to the body. He is not letting Jones begin to breathe. His best shots in the first minute of this round are sneaky body blows that come at the end of combos where Joe goes upstairs and gets blocked there, as Jones is doing all he can to protect the eye.
Also, for the record, Hubert Earle has done a great job refereeing this fight. I say that because he’s been totally impossible to notice.
That cut has gotten VERY bad. The entire left side of his face is getting bloody. They might have to stop this. There may not be any choice if they’re playing by the rules. Roy looks in terrible shape.
More body shots. Roy is finished. I would suggest stopping the fight right now, and I hate to say that.
