ESPN Sunday Conversation: Oscar de la Hoya

Nothing terribly interesting, but it's nice that ESPN is bothering to talk boxing, and another feather in Oscar's cap, as he's apparently the only guy that can actually get himself on the network for more than a 10-second blip.

Boxing vs UFC: I’m not going to open that can of worms.

Why even reprint their comments?

why here?

I agree with Miller. No point in having those comments on the front of this page. ESPN still posts pre-fight coverage of Pavlik-Hopkins, that’s why I’m here and not there. Let’s get that off the front of this page.

ok, removed

But here’s the thing: those two comments are still the ONLY two comments on that page. No one — not a single boxing fan — has said, “Great! It’s about time ESPN talked boxing,” or anything like that. We get the non-fans that think boxing is dead and nothing more. Public perception IS that boxing is dead. Where are the boxing fans? We know they exist.

Where are all the boxing fans?

Right here at Bad Left Hook, that’s where…

That’s just Dana’s parrotheads.

If it’ll make any of you guys feel better, Der Spiegel just did a damning piece on UFC.

Didn't elite or whatever it is called just went out of business?

Elite XC.

And yes, technecally they’ve been out of business for a month. They’re holding contracts hostage right now.

Regardless of what the comments were:

They did run Hatton over Paulie on the ticker, too.

Good Post

Personally, Oscar really rubs me the wrong way, but what you say makes sense. I also rec’d you.

same

Oscar irks me with his personality, whatever it is, but I’ve always said we’ll miss him when he’s gone. He’s the guy that makes a big fight.

i hate

listening to him talk too, but i love to see boxing get attention. and he is the guy who brings the most attention to the sport so its just something we have to deal with. my hope is that manny, one of the best talents boxing has to offer, can become a big draw because of this fight, and thats why i want him to win. manny learned english to appeal to americans and the big market here so he could be a superstar (here in america) and i think this is a huge step towards that.

What is scary is to think how boxing would be without him. Let say he never fought Mayorga… What does that make Mayweather? Is he even relevant? Nope… Do we have 24/7? Does HBO get out of boxing with all the disappointing PPV numbers it gets?
