Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Toney-Oquendo and Holt-Hopkins
TWO MORE CARDS TONIGHT!
The Toney-Oquendo and Ward-Camou card starts at 9 ET on Versus, and the Holt-Hopkins 140-pound title fight starts at 11 ET on Showtime. Since time between the two will likely be fairly short, we'll just throw these two together.

he did beat Holt in the amateurs
But that might as well be a different sport. I’m sticking with Kendall. I’m praying for Kendall.
I guess there was some good back and forth trash talking between the two this week, I think I read it in the Rafael chat. Hopkins said that Holt only beat Torres because of a headbutt, then Holt demanded that Hopkins give Forbes the win he stole.

not that I've heard
I’m sure there’s interest if Holt wins, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Torres tries to move up, either.

Toney boring boring SD
Holt wide UD

I'll throw some down
Ward TKO-3
Oquendo late stoppage
Holt UD (8-4, 9-3 or so)
I’m picking Oquendo not because I’m a big fan or think he’s very good, but I’m so sick of James Toney’s fat, cheating, lying ass that I’d love for him to be run out of the sport by one of the fringiest of fringe contenders.

And Estrada just starts WINGING shots, and DOWN GOES SPAID! Well, then.
OK, toughman contest ponytail tiger prints, let’s go.
Spaid falls down punching. And he about falls down punching again. Estrada is wailing on him. Down he goes again. Lou Moret thankfully stops this.

I’m going to be honest, though, Wally Matthews’ sermon after the fight is a bit much for me when these two were trying to sell us on Shaun Spaid no more than five minutes ago. THE BLAME IS ON THE COMMISSION. WE’RE ALL IN A BAD SPOT. Dude, can it. This is who guys fight when they’re in their second fight. You’re just usually not there to see it.

Ward-Camou R1
Nice left to the body, and then a right to the body follows from Ward. That second one seemed to sting Camou a little. Very nice jab from Ward so far, making the distance clear for Camou. Ward is not showing any real ill effects from the knee surgery, working his way around the ring, keeping Camou chasing, and pot shotting along the way.
Nice left hook from Ward, and a right hand follows it before the bell. Nice round for Ward. He should finish this fairly quickly.

Ward-Camou R2
Left hook from Ward. Ward working off of a pawing jab. The left is really working for him, as he lands a couple more. HARD right as Camou opens up. Very, very nice stuff. Ward is thoroughly dominating this, dictating the pace and tagging Camou at will. Camou can’t do anything. Nasty right to the body, then a combo. He’s got it all working tonight. Another wicked right, then a three punch combo. Left hook from Camou has some mustard on it, but Ward comes right back on him. Camou’s face is reddening up plenty already.
1-2 after some missed lefts and a short right that did land. Round ends with another Ward flurry.
Ward 10-9
Ward 20-18
Honestly this is so lopsided both rounds could’ve been 10-8, but Camou hasn’t been noticeably hurt yet, so 10-9 for me.

Ward-Camou R3
Ward goes southpaw and I think a train is unloading cargo somewhere in the background. Wally wonders if the knee might be bothering Ward, causing him to switch his stance. Ward winding up his left. The southpaw stance isn’t the prettiest thing from him, but he’s so much better than Camou that it doesn’t matter. Camou seems unable to figure out the stance switch at all. Ward DRILLS him with a left hand, drives him into the ropes, and moments later Pat Russell stops it.
“Heeey that’s a quick hook!” remarks Wally, and yet Esteban Camou doesn’t say a thing about the stoppage.

Toney-Oquendo R1
And Oquendo forgets his mouthpiece. Great start.
Jab by Toney, Oquendo misses a left. Toney’s ass is about to fall out of his trunks.
Left hook Toney, and Oquendo just got caught with a chopping right. Shit, rjhabeeb might win this war of words. Oquendo rocks him back a bit about a minute later. In between Toney is doing his thing. Oquendo working the jab, keeping Toney at distance. JT is doing his usual bit where he lands a big punch per round and in between doesn’t do much at all besides posture in a throwback-y way that gives commentators hard-ons. Lucky for him Oquendo isn’t very good either.
Oquendo 10-9, but barely — I liked his work with the jab

Toney-Oquendo R2
I shouldn’t totally hate on JT. I like the way he fights in many ways. That style gives me a hard-on too. I’ll be fair. I’ll put my bias aside.
If he can turn this into a craft war, he’ll pull away easily. Still, his legs don’t look great tonight. He IS 40 years old. Oquendo is trying to make the fight go, but isn’t being over aggressive. Toney just isn’t working. He’s not out of the gate yet.
Oquendo 10-9
Oquendo 20-18

Toney-Oquendo R3
Toney storms out with the left, and he’s tracking Oquendo like a damn dog now. Nice right from Oquendo, and Toney oversells like Ricky Morton. Toney with a couple decent rights. Right from Oquendo. Oquendo with a little charge. His workrate might be winning another round. Nah, I’m giving this one to JT.

Toney-Oquendo R4
Oquendo grips up for a head-and-arm Tazplex. Oh Jesus, Toney falls down and falls out of the ring. Toney’s pissed when he comes back, throwing a heavy right and going on the attack a little. JT’s swatting Oquendo’s jab, and yet still Toney isn’t doing a lot. Oquendo caught him with a bit of a right at the end of the round.

Kind of a same ol’ same ol’ round. Oquendo is just outworking and outpointing him from my seat. Toney’s just slow and sluggish and not himself. He’s not even the faded version of “himself” tonight. Oquendo pops with another right near the end of the round. Barry calls it “an action fight.” What’s the last fight he saw? Klitschko-Ibragimov?

Oquendo keeps scoring and scoring. A couple of chopping rights back Toney down. Maybe he can make a face then throw a left and excite the crowd. Toney caught coming in now. Popping right and a nice one by JT. Fres comes back with an overhand right and checks with Dr. Lou to make sure it was kosher. Right by Toney. James is lumbering like never before. I mean his feet are just slower than all hell. Oquendo with a left to the gut. Both guys are looking pretty sloptastic at this point, though Oquendo is fresher than usual. Maybe James’ best round.

FINAL ROUND PRAISE GOD
HUGE right from Oquendo to start the round. James is eating rights, trying to feign and it’s just not happening. I think he can be competitive in mid-level fights from here on out but Jesus he, like Rahman, is done at the top tier. He has nothing left in the tank. Oquendo so easily won these final two rounds — James barely put up a fight at all. Hopefully the scores don’t take 10 minutes to get tallied and read.

Yuri with a quick left. Two rights from Foreman. Moore starts throwing a little, but Foreman, as always, moves well and James is having trouble finding him. Heavy right from Foreman. He’s really landing the lead right well. He’s going to the body and they’re actually scrapping a little. Praise the Lord. Foreman with ANOTHER big right. Terrible round for Moore.

Foreman-Moore R3
This is about as exciting as a Foreman fight has ever been. Moore putting the chase on, so that’s commendable. He isn’t accepting defeat. He’s working hard to find a way to start scoring and hopefully slow Yuri down. Trade of rights, and Yuri throws another one. And another nice shot. This is fine workrate and I’m OK with that.
Foreman 10-9

Moore is getting Foreman to war up a bit, which is neat. Moore is doing the best he can against athletic gifts and odds. He’s also not getting caught with that right anymore, or else Yuri just isn’t throwing it.

Moore is a fun guy to watch. He’s so fun he’s making Yuri watchable. Foreman going to the body nicely on Moore’s charges. Foreman with the big right again. Moore is a fuckin’ predator. I love it. He’s getting popped and just keeps coming in. Moore misses a right, Foreman hits a left in retaliation. Right from Foreman. He’s just a lot quicker, much better technique.

Foreman’s mouthpiece falls out twice. Big right from Foreman behind the ear, and Moore is hurt. Foreman hits another right, and he’s getting as aggressive as he ever gets. Another right lands.

Nice right from Foreman. Moore is definitely shaken up still. Chopping right near the ear again. Foreman is now clinching on Moore’s charges. CLEAN shot by Foreman shakes Moore again. Moore’s mouthpiece replaced now. Yuri wins yet another round.

Foreman-Moore R9
Foreman keeps pot-shotting and moving. He’s done it all night. Yuri’s never going to excite anyone, really, but he’s got a decent chance at winning an alphabet strap at some point. BIG right from Foreman hurts Moore again. Bad cut over his left eye, but the round ends and he’ll likely gut out the final round.

Moore shoved down near the end of the first minute. Moore, pissed off, starts swinging. The cut is ruled open by a punch, which is a good call since the headbutt in question was on the other side of the face, and very clearly so. More mouthpieces falling out. Good Lord.
Easy win for Foreman, and a decent enough fight. Foreman, as always, is gracious in victory.

Holt-Hopkins R1
They’re trading some nice leather to start. Both look sharp. Holt is the aggressor. Man they are really trading nice combinations, Holt getting the better of it in this opening round. Good round for Kendall.

Holt-Hopkins R2
Holt is landing first, leading most times, and throwing power shots. Uppercut from Holt, and a wicked right thrown and missed. Holt definitely showed up to fight tonight. No repeat of the Ben Tackie performance. Right to the body by Kendall. Hopkins is doing a lot of smiling as he tries to avoid power shots. Left hook thrown. Holt is cruising a bit right now.

And his chin isn’t very good. Bradley’s more accurate than Torres and should be able to better exploit that.

Holt-Hopkins R3
Hopkins caught on the ropes and Holt just rips away. DHop gets away. Right hand from Holt after the jab. Ripping left to the body. Hopkins fires back with two shots. Hopkins with a nice combo moments later. Holt with a wild right that glances. Holt with two shots, blocked, and Hop hits a big hook. Holt fires back with one of his own. Hook to the body by Holt. That punch is landing very nicely. Hopkins doesn’t quite look outclassed, just too cautious to hang with a guy willing to lead.

Holt-Hopkins R4
Hopkins doubles on the jab. Nick wonders why DHop isn’t letting his hands go more. I don’t know that he’s seen Hop fight before, like when Kellerman was amazed that Rocky Juarez started kind of slow. Hopkins is landing some good stuff this round, too, but there’s a left hook by Holt and he opens up and lets HIS hands go. He’s really throwing big shots with a ton of bad intent.
Hopkins 10-9
Holt 39-37

Holt-Hopkins R5
If Hop would keep throwing those jabs and working off of them he could really win some rounds. His jab does look good. Hop is also doing a better job of avoiding big shots the last couple rounds. 30 seconds and it’s Hopkins so far. This is a fine, competitive fight. Hopkins is staying away from him, which might not win him any fans but will win him rounds.

Hopkins is kind of effectively neutralizing Holt’s offense the last few rounds. Nice little trade inside. Minute left and it’s up for grabs. Holt wins another exchange. Holt with a shot to the body. Jab from Hop.

Holt-Hopkins R7
Hopkins stung on a big left from Holt as they trade shots immediately. Right from Holt. Hopkins tying up and hanging on. Right to the body from Holt, and Hopkins ties him up again. Hopkins jabbing, and Holt lays off the gas, probably wisely. He did buzz him but it might not still be there. Holt with a right. Holt rushes him again. Exchange, and Holt lands a left hook at the end of it, but he got popped, too. Holt throwing more hard shots. HUGE right misses by Holt. That was a KO seeker. Both land again. Good round for Kendall.

Holt-Hopkins R8
Hop with a long jab to the body, nothin’ on it. Hopkins is moving around the ring, getting on his bike a little, and landing his jab. There’s the right behind it. Holt with a stiff jab, then throws a power shot to the body. Farhood is right — Hopkins is totally predictable offensively. The rounds are a matter of whether he avoids Holt or not. Holt stalking, cracking when he can, trying to find Hopkins but not chasing him. Just pursuing. 1-2 from Hopkins at the end.

Holt-Hopkins R9
Holt starts the round aggressive again, AND NOW THEY TRADE! Holt wins that one. Hopkins is doing a lot of clinching now. I don’t think he really wants anything to do with Kendall Holt at this point. Right from Holt lands, and then moments later he’s just winging wild shots. Hopkins lands a right, glancingly. Nice rights on a combination from Hopkins with Holt ducking way down.

Hopkins throwing, but the best punch of the exchange is a left hook to the body by Holt. Hook and a right both glance from Holt. Holt throwing again. Hopkins just can’t win those exchanges. Nice right from Hop near the end, but I’m still favoring Holt this round even though he’s slowed down a bit.
