Bad Left Hook Fight Day: Nikolai Valuev v. Evander Holyfield
Yeah, we're gonna be here. The show starts at 3pm ET, and I've got about as much interest in RBRing a Mads Larsen fight as I do putting thumbtacks in my genitals, so I'm not sure when we'll really start for the "main event." All coverage will be in the comments, and if you want to start talking mad trash, get that going any time you want.
This is ridiculous.
Step right up! Come one, come all!
SEE! The world's most GIANT BOXER!
And he will battle...THE ANCIENT RUINS OF HEAVYWEIGHT GLORIES PAST!
A spectacle for the ages...and the AGED! Ha ha ha!
15 cents, children.

This is the last round-by-round of the year here at Bad Left Hook, and we won't do another one until January 9, 2009. The future...
It's been a great year, and I've enjoyed the opportunity to do my best calling the fights for those that couldn't see this one or that one, and I always love conversing with everyone on fight night. It makes it that much more fun for me. Frankly, without you guys I'm not sure if I could've retained my sanity during the Oscar-Manny undercard or that Calzaghe-Jones sham pay-per-view. So thanks to everyone, and we'll do it again all year next year.

Thanks to you, SC
Since discovering this site, I don’t have to worry about missing fights or taking a $50 plunge on shaky PPVs. The RBRs are the most enjoyable to read in the ‘net, and the comments are filled with good-natured humor that could carry anyone through the most boring scrap. I’m sure I’m not the only one that has learned a lot about boxing in here.
Here’s hoping BLH stays around for a long time to come.
I'm hoping he is
That’s one I actually wanna see.

Thanks for all the fight play by plays over the past year. It is been really enjoyable to become a part of the SBnation.
Anyways… I just hope that it is quick and to the point. Evander needs to be put down like Old Yeller, A quick KO. A fighter his age and diminishing abilities doesn’t need to take a sustained beating over 12 rounds.
Where are you watching this?
I see only TSN2, which isn’t available in the states.

dunno if it's on DirecTV
I’ve got digital cable — it’s an Integrated Sports PPV.
Quick Google search makes it appear DirecTV isn’t even offering the show.

OK, with no DirecTV availability, the fact that this starts at 3pm, and their lack of a commercial where Evander throws a dolphin, I have no choice but to assume this will do one buy.

10-rounder. This is seriously a good PPV stream quality video feed they’ve got. Horrible.
Larsen with a jab after they flail their arms around a bunch and hit nothing. Swatting right hook from Larsen, more of a slap than anything. Larsen missing shots, but Cocco waiting to counter and failing when he gets the chance. Larsen is flicking his jab but not really hitting it at all. There’s one that lands, and two that do not. Cocco misses a big right.
What a round. “High-octane,” says Nick. Fuck you, Nick.

Larsen-Cocco R2
This is a supreme mismatch and nothing more than yet another alleged tune-up fight for Mads Larsen, which most of his fights are. He’s 35 and his last five fights have been eight-rounders for God’s sake. Larsen is peppering away with zero trouble against this guy, which you’d probably expect when he’s fighting a 31-year old guy with 11 pro fights. Still, this is more competitive than every fight on the last PPV undercard.

This is a snoozer. It’s kind of like the Foreman-Moore fight from last weekend except Cocco isn’t as interested in throwing haymakers as Moore was early on.
“Entertaining to watch,” says Nick. Fuck you, Nick. Seriously, who are you convincing? I already paid.
Cocco does land a couple punches at the end of the round after switching lefty for the second time in the fight. But mostly this is just a yawnfest with Larsen popping him from the outside, or at least being the only guy throwing anything.

Valuev-Holyfield R1
Valuev throwing the jab, Evander tries to get inside early and makes it, but can’t do anything. Evander dancing around away from the jab’s length. Valuev catches him coming in. Holyfield is wandering around the ring, circling, trying to come in, and he lands a hook. Valuev with a combo but comes up mostly empty. Jab flicked out. Holy comes in again, Valuev goes to the body and basically shoves Holyfield away. Holyfield with an overhand right, and he wings a left haymaker that misses. Evander avoids the slow-fisted Valuev’s shots. Left hook by Holyfield as Valuev tries to make something happen.
Hey, well…first round went about as well as it could for Evander.

Valuev-Holyfield R2
Holyfield comes in and hugs, slips through Valuev’s arms and turns him around. It means nothing, but he made Valuev actually have to turn around for the restart. Valuev still looking for the jab, Evander still circling around the ring. There is even less action this round. Evander with the hook, clinching and hitting now. Valuev is going to actually have to HIT Holyfield at some point, I wonder if he knows that. Evander could, theoretically, circle for 12 rounds and rack up rounds like this. Holyfield with another hook. There’s no starch on them at all, but they do count. Shot to the body lands. Valuev is doing NOTHING.
Holyfield 10-9
Holyfield 20-18
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
Valuev-Holyfield R3
Valuev backs him down with a long shot. He looks like he’s trying to hit Holy some when he comes in now. Valuev with a 1-2 that missesbut keeps Evander consistently hitting the reset button. I don’t know if Nick Charles has ever seen Valuev fight outside of the Monte Barrett highlight. Nick Charles’ stock is dropping like a rock today, in fact. He’s been awful. And now Nick is just insulting him.
Holyfield with a nice right as he bulls inside, and shit, that scores. He’s scoring here and there. In a fight this shitty, that matters. Valuev — and Nick is right about this — HAS to let his hands go. He’s giving rounds away by doing nothing.
They’re talking about this like they expected a good fight. It’s totally bizarre.
Valuev again just hands Holyfield a round on about three punches from Holyfield.

Valuev-Holyfield R4
“Holyfield” chant goes up as he continues to move around the ring. Valuev just sticks his arm out there for his jabs. They’re not landing, there’s nothing on them, and then his follow-up rights are so slow and obvious that a goddamned snow man could get out of the way.
Valuev hits the jab to the chest, but then nothing with his right. Valuev with a jab, and Holyfield hits him twice, including one big left hook. Holyfield working inside now, and he’s got Valuev backed into the corner. Uppercut from Valuev. Most action of the fight. And that little burst probably steals another round for Evander since Valuev was winning it on the basis of one jab to the chest.
This is terrible, but it’s unique.

Valuev-Holyfield R5
I really don’t have the words for this. It’s just a complete circus show.
Evander playing the stay-away game some more. Nothing has changed. Valuev throws perhaps the worst left hook I have ever seen. Holyfield with a right to the body, then Valuev steps away from Evander’s killer left hook instead of punching him in the head or something. Maybe he should go to the chokeslam.
Holyfield pins Valuev on the ropes with a left hook. This is…he’s going to win. He’s going to win this goddamned fight. Valuev might as well put a bow on this shit and wish Evander a Merry Christmas.
Valuev with a jab that sort of touches Holyfield’s face.
Totally and absoluely stupefying.

Valuev-Holyfield R6
Al Bernstein rightfully compliments Tommy Brooks’ corner work.
Holyfield with two left hooks to the body. And then we go back to the circle (jerk). Valuev seems to pull off of an attempt at an uppercut. Valuev is just horrible tonight. Absolutely horrible. This is pathetic. Holyfield doesn’t look good at all and he’s winning this with no effort.
Again, someone throw a pie or something.
Nick: “It’s like Valuev doesn’t wanna fight. He doesn’t know how to fight.”
Valuev misses a combination, then goes back to flicking his jab. Evander rushes in and goes to the body again.
Holyfield 10-9
Holyfield 60-54
A clean sweep for six rounds on my card. I’m serious. This is just atrocious.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
I never want to see Valuev again
He’s a nice guy, but he’s awful. If he can’t beat a washed-out, 46-year old Holyfield, he has no business in big fights.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
Valuev-Holyfield R7
Valuev throws two quick jabs and an uppercut. But they all miss. And also they’re quick on the Valuev Scale of speed. It’s sort of like being the fastest runner in a race between Kevin Millar and Jason Giambi.
Valuev short on his jabs some more. Evander moves around, stays away, does nothing. He’s waiting for his moment of the round where he lands a shot or two and puts another one in the bank. Valuev opens up with a combo, but it’s two counter rights from Holyfield that steal that exchange, and Valuev takes two steps back to pull up his trunks for the fifth time.
Valuev got more active but he still loses because it’s not nearly active enough, and he didn’t land anything.
Holyfield 10-9
Holyfield 70-63
So Valuev needs something special as far as I’m concerned. He looks frustrated with Holyfield’s tactics, but fuck that — what did he expect Evander to do?
Replays show Holyfield using his head as always. He did manage it.
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
Valuev-Holyfield R8
“Al, we all expected more.” Nick Charles is seriously doped up today.
Valuev with a right, and he’s finally throwing at Holyfield now. I’ll be damned. There he is again, jab, jab, right. Holyfield circling again. Valuev throwing, Holyfield throws back and again winds up being the guy backing the other man down. How is that even possible? Is Valuev a giant cookie?
Left hook Holyfield. Jab to the body by Valuev, and then a right up top glances. Jab lands again. Hey, Nikolai wins a round!
Valuev 10-9
Holyfield 79-73
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
That was funny
“I don’t speak Russian, Al, but this guy’s not telling him enough”
Valuev-Holyfield R9
Valuev with a left hook catches a piece of Holyfield, who stumbles a bit on a slip. Valuev with a hook, and Evander fires back! What a nice combo from Holyfield in there. Valuev warned for something — shit, let them fight. That’s pretty much the reaction of Nick and Al, too.
And then it all quiets down again. Valuev with a right, Holyfield’s counter doesn’t get home. Jab from Valuev seems to affect Holyfield that time. He was caught with that one. Holyfield is looking like he’s tiring from all the circling.
Tough round to score.
Valuev 10-9
Holyfield 88-83
"Yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." -- Bob Arum
Valuev-Holyfield R10
Nick is really crapping on Evander now, and the fight as a whole.
Holyfield throwing, then sneaking away. And Valuev looks totally reluctant to fight. I cannot really describe this properly. There’s action, but no action, and it’s interesting, but it’s totally not. Evander with a right, and a good one.
Nick: “They take drug tests after these fights, and they better, because Valuev looks like he took too many sleeping pills. He looks TERRIBLE.”
Nick Charles is actually kind of losing it, and I’m lovin’ it. Best part of the fight is now Nick Charles.
Valuev with a sloppy, soft combo in the corner, and again Holyfield fires back with a lot more on his punches, even though there’s nothing on his either.
Holyfield 10-9
Holyfield 98-92

Who did Moorer ever beat at heavyweight though. It’s not like his resume was that much better than Valuev’s. His only good win was over Holyfield, and that was the fight when he had a heart attack in the middle of the fight.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Valuev-Holyfield R11
I cannot believe we’re six minutes away from what is surely the 46-year old Evander Holyfield winning the WBA heavyweight title.
Valuev throwing a little, Holyfield covers up and throws back. Valuev hasn’t had one moment of momentum. Valuev paws some more, Holyfield rips at him and nothing really lands. Just a dead fight now. Holyfield’s tired, Valuev never wasn’t, and it’s just horrific. Yet another feather in the cap for the heavyweight division.
One of the worst rounds of the fight, as amazing is that is.

Nick: “Just go for it, man.”
Holyfield charges and lands some big rights. Valuev takes them like he couldn’t care less about being in there. Holyfield leans back on the ropes, Valuev makes no effort to close the gap, and then Holyfield just escapes and gets back on his bicycle.
Amazing.
Valuev finally throws at him a bit with 30 seconds left, which looks more like he thinks he should be doing it than anything else. Evander throws and staggers around the ring.
I cannot believe what I just saw. And I say that as dry and emotionless as possible.

Bute/Andrade wasn't a robbery
Bute was up by 8, and under IBF rules, you just need to be on your feet at the end of the round.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Under a very questionable count...
Eh… I am very disappointed in the result in this fight. This is just as bad as the Santa Cruz/Casamajor scoring.
He was up by 5 under the questionable count
He was up by 8 under my normal count.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
I cannot believe this
This is horrible.

Well, that
is about the worst boxing has to offer … from the introductions to the judges scorecards. The complete package.
Evander thinks he won
And goddamn it, he’s absolutely right. It wasn’t pretty, but the man won the fight. Nikolai Valuev was atrocious and has no business calling himself a “champion.”

"What was lacking tonight?"
“I don’t think anything was lacking.”
Preach it, Evander.
OK, I’m going to try to get the post-fight article up.

Everything about this fight was sad and wrong. Not only the worst fight of the year, but I could easily make a case, all things considered, that this was the worst fight I’ve ever seen.
Pardon my lang….
But this was complete bullshit. It is fucking disgraceful what the judges did in Switzerland. It wasn’t a good fight for sure but at least give credit where credit is due. Valuev didn’t even show up to fight. Evander at least looked like he was interesting in fighting at his old age.
