Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Williams-Quintana and Berto-Trabant

MAIN EVENT
For the WBO Welterweight Title
PAUL WILLIAMS
(33-0, 24 KO, Augusta, GA)
versus
CARLOS QUINTANA
(24-1, 19 KO, Moca, Puerto Rico)

For the NABF Welterweight Title
ANDRE BERTO
(20-0, 17 KO, Winter Haven, FL)
versus
MICHEL TRABANT
(43-2-1, 19 KO, Berlin, Germany)

As tough as Quintana is, give me Williams by a rather wide unanimous decision. I always look forward to watching "The Punisher" fight, because he's just so damn unique.

Berto by KO in the middle rounds. Trabant will never trouble him.

Trabant is called "Phantom." It brings to mind the horrifying news that another "Phantom," Sven Ottke, is returning to the ring to fix his bank account after a costly divorce. I don't care why he's coming back. I wish Ottke no luck in his return to the squared circle. He's a complete joke. If you've never seen his alleged victory over Robin Reid, you've never seen a robbery. It made Casamayor-Santa Cruz make sense. At least Santa Cruz wasn't fighting the fatass referee, too.

Show starts at 9:45 EST on HBO. Join us!

Alright, I'm pretty psyched about this main event.  I think it'll be a closer fight than most people think.

I like Berto by KO in the first fight, fifth round.
And I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Quintana wins by split decision in the main event.  Though, of course, part of it is wishful thinking, since I'm rooting for him.  But I do think it'll be a pretty close fight.

I really like Quintana
It wouldn't stun me if he won, the same as it didn't stun me when he manhandled Joel Julio.

Berto-Trabant R1
Trabant comes out very slow, with Berto throwing combinations upstairs, and about a minute in he starts getting tagged. Trabant is staying entirely still, right in front of Berto.

Jab slips through from Trabant. Berto is looking as sharp as always, very fast, everything's coming in strong and smooth. Bob Papa calls Trabant's past steroid positive an "embarrassing moment." Funny how different sports treat steroids.

Berto wins the round on cleaner punches and much more activity. I don't think Trabant got close to finding an opening, and his face is already showing some reddening.

Berto 10-9

Berto-Trabant R2
You know, Berto's one big flaw I see is a total lack of desire to go to the body. He headhunts all night.

Trabant looks totally overmatched so far. Trabant gets rocked back with a right hand that he mostly blocks -- that's how big Andre Berto punches.

Trabant is just not fighting back. Well there he goes with a slow flurry. He's got no chance if this keeps up. None.

Berto is absolutely outclassing Trabant through the first two rounds. It's not even close. Trabant can't find range for a jab, is too slow to land combinations, and can't keep blocking as much as he is. Eventually Berto will kick it up a notch.

Berto-Trabant R3
Pretty fair swelling around Trabant's left eye.

There's a hook to the body from Berto, and it looked vicious. Trabant with a wide hook upstairs, blocked, hook to the body lands. Berto with a huge flurry, and there he goes! Great series from Berto.

Nasty uppercut from Berto, and he is winging away now. This is one-sided. Trabant is playing good D on a lot of this, but he's still feeling it.

Double left from Berto. He's smoking him. This looks like a real step down from David Estrada for Berto, or else Berto just looks even better.

BIG uppercut from Berto. And then he snaps his head back. Trabant is getting pounded this round. Man do I love to watch Andre Berto in action. This guy is some kind of exciting, and he builds confidence like the greats do.

Referee follows Trabant to his corner to ask him if he's OK. He doesn't look so good, and looks really demoralized already.

Berto 10-8 -- that round was not even close

Berto-Trabant R4
Lederman gave it 10-9, but says he wouldn't argue with anyone that gave it 10-8. Kellerman says it looked like 10-8. Most judges just won't do 10-8 with no knockdown, and I don't know why.

Berto continues to treat Trabant like feeble prey. I'm almost feeling bad for Trabant. He came all the way to the U.S. just to get pummeled.

Berto with a hellacious double right combo. Hard right from Berto to the side of the head. He's measuring and dominating. This is child's play for him.

Michel Trabant has no business in a ring with Andre Berto. This isn't even fair. Berto is playing with him.

Berto-Trabant R5
What the hell can Trabant's corner say to him? "Hey, Michel. Just fall down. Let's go home."

Well, apparently they said, "Fight for your life." That's pretty good.

There's the uppercut again, and Berto is in total control. Trabant can't get untracked. I'm starting to really get sad watching Trabant. I'm sure he's trying, but he can't do anything.

Trabant finally puts some punches together, but they're slap shots. Nothing more. Berto has no concern about his opponent's power. When a guy like Berto has no fear of his opponent, he becomes a fucking tiger.

Jesus, what a right cross by Berto to end the round.

Berto-Trabant R6
Trabant can take a fuckin' punch, let's give him that.

Berto charges out for round six, going right into the heavy offense. More slick, powerful combos from Berto continue to push Trabant back.

There's nothing more you can say about this one. I've run out of ways to say, "Berto is kicking the shit out of Trabant."

Kellerman is saying it's time for Berto to go up another step, into the likes of Quintana and Collazo, though he strangely puts Clottey a notch higher than them. I don't know why anyone thinks Clottey is better than Quintana or Collazo. But he's right. This should be the last time Berto fights someone on Trabant's level.

Berto 10-9
Berto 60-53

Williams at 164

Williams-Quintana R1
Two lefties, a slick boxer and a freakishly tall puzzle. This is an awkward looking affair.

Quintana with a NICE combo, and he's throwing some good shots at Williams. A couple of those landed very square. Williams is shucking, jiving, moving and grooving, as he always does. His upper body movement is so jell-o-y.

Quintana is fighting smart so far, staying back, moving well, and also coming in on him very well. Quintana's landing a good amount of lefts on Williams, and with 30 seconds left, I think he's winning this round.

Williams isn't throwing nearly as much as he usually does. SWEET right hand from Quintana, right on the button and Williams did not see it coming.

Hey, guess which guy has a puzzle to solve right now? It ain't the challenger.

Williams-Quintana R2
I really like what Quintana is doing so far. This is really good stuff, and is proving how good he really is. Getting steamrolled by Cotto is nothing to terribly fault a guy for.

Quintana is owning the ring! Williams cannot figure him out!

Williams is caught with another sneaky left hand. There's a straight right! Williams is STUNG with a left hand! Williams can't solve Quintana's attack at all!

All the !s are me being surprised -- not that Quintana is boxing well, but how well he's boxing. He looks marvelous. Another left lands.

Williams is befuddled. Or he should be.

Wlliams-Quintana R3
Williams needs to get to what he does best, which is work, work, work, work.

Sneaky counter right from Quintana. Now Williams is starting to go offense-first, really looking to open up. Quintana, though, is cutting him off.

They're getting tangled up inside now. Williams is now trying to get inside -- that's where they're at in the Punisher's corner. Get inside on the smaller man.

This is actually a pretty ugly round, more tussling and not much clean punching. Another right lands. Williams isn't landing much, and he's really loopy with his punching. Quintana is dominating him again. The last 40 seconds of an even round are all Quintana.

How about this performance? This is a boxing lesson from Quintana, much like that Julio fight.

Williams-Quintana R4
Lederman gave Williams the third.

Quintana starts out well again, but Williams is looking much better than he did in the first two rounds. Nice jab from Williams. There's a left from Quintana.

Williams keeps flicking his jab out there, but it's not working very well. The right hook lands again from Quintana, feigned  him beautifully beforehand. That has worked all night.

Another round for Quintana. Williams is getting tagged repeatedly and not mounting any momentum. This has been a hell of a fight from Carlos Quintana.

Cotto
Going into Round 6.  How does Cotto's 5th round KO of Quintana look now?

by Kevin Gonzalez on Feb 9, 2008 10:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Williams-Quintana R5
Williams has some swelling around his right eye.

You know, if you put Cotto and Quintana against one another 20 times, I think Cotto probably wins all of the fights, or at least 18 of them. But I don't think more than two or three of them look like the one fight did.

Williams pushes Quintana back with a looping left. Williams is landing some clean shots now, and looking a little more relaxed, and maybe a little more focused on what Quintana's going to do, instead of entirely focused on what HE'S going to do.

Much better round for Paul Williams, and the first I think he's won. But Quintana continues to absolutely fluster hiim. Quintana slowing his offensive pace was a big factor.

Williams-Quintana R6
Williams has landed 15% of his jabs so far. That is awful for anyone, let alone a jab-based fighter.

Williams with a nice left hand. Williams misses a flurry, and Quintana pops him with a left. Quintana fakes a right to the body, comes over the top with another left.

There's a three-punch combo from Williams. This is, so far, a really intriguing matchup. Quintana with a right hook and a big straight left. Quintana looks like a fucking top five welterweight tonight. Maybe he is! The only guy he's lost to is the firm No. 2.

Another super round for Quintana.

Williams-Quintana R7
This is the part of an upset bid of this nature where I start REALLY worrying about the scorecards.

Lederman has it 57-57, giving the last two to Williams. What the fuck is this "jabbin' well with the right hand" that Lederman is seeing? Where is Quintana's lack of clean punching?

Williams has looked BETTER. But not terribly good. He is starting to really catch him this round, though. And Quintana is starting to look a little worse for wear in the legs...

Oh boy.

Williams is dominating this round.

Yeah, Paul's popping him. Whoops, there's a hard right from Quintana, and now they are TRADING! Williams' legs look fresher. Papa has jumped on Hurrld's gravy train, characterizing every fucking Quintana punch as "lazy" or "sluggish." These shots are landing well. If Williams can't STOP a "lazy" or "sluggish" punch, then what the hell does that say about Paul Williams?

Williams-Quintana R8
Boy, Bob Papa is calling this like he wants to kiss Paul Williams. I swear to God.

That left by Quintana? That counts. The right? That counts. Papa is ignoring them. I'm getting really annoyed by him.

Three chopping rights from Williams, and those are going to hurt. Quintana with a double right. Both guys are starting to punch with some real purpose at the end of the eighth. This fight is close on most cards, probably.

I have it 67-66 for Quintana. Good fight.

Williams-Quintana R9
Williams has a cut over his left eye.

Lederman has Williams up 77-75.

Quintana holding Williams' right arm, and getting popped with lefts. Quintana does not look fresh anymore, and it wouldn't surprise me if he got knocked out or swept out on the cards from this point on.

There's a heavy left from Quintana, but it didn't catch Williams square. Yeah, Quintana's gassed. He's  not looking great, and he's getting outworked and beaten to the punch.

Quintana is hanging tough, though! There's some left hands, and Williams takes a step back on one of them. This has turned into a hell of a fight. It's now a war of attrition. Survival of the fittest. Some other cliche.

Quintana landed the better punches this round. No question.

Round 10
I have it 6-3 for Quintana right now.  But I thought Round 9 could have definitely gone either way.  But I do think hes winning the fight.

Williams' chin
I think the story of this fight so far is Quintana's ring savvy versus Williams' physicality and impressive chin.

Quintana has a slight edge but seems intermittently tired. If Williams can take advantage of his lapses better, he'll probably win. But so far, he seems a little shell-shocked--not a lot, but a little, by the fact that this fight is so competitive for him.

by Matt Miller on Feb 9, 2008 11:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Williams-Quintana R10
This fight reminds me somewhat of the Vivian Harris-Juan Lazcano fight from last February, under Mosley-Collazo. The style matchup is wildly ineresting, and the underdog is more than holding his own against the more physically gifted fighter.

Quintana lands another big left, and there's another one. Quintana is working his ass off. Leaving it all in the ring. Some other cliche.

Look, I give that one to Quintana again. He's showing so much more than Williams. Hitting harder, throwing enough to keep a respectable pace, and boxing smarter.

Quintana 10-9
Quintana 97-93

Williams-Quintana R11
There's a hard counter right from Williams, and Quintana looks shaken. Williams could knock Quintana out if he really came with it. I firmly believe that. Quintana is dog tired and showing real toughness.

You wanna talk lazy punches? Paul Williams has punched lazy all night.

Lennox is from "the old school" where you have to "really beat a guy to take away his title." Because holding a fucking alphabet belt should really buy you more respect from judges and give you the benefit of the doubt.

NOW THEY TRADE

Quintana's getting the better of him. He's re-bloodied Williams, and the cut over his right eye is joined by one near his left. Paul Williams has not landed more than two or three significant punches this entire fight.

Bob Papa calls this "a tight one." I don't see it.

Quintana 10-9
Quintana 107-102

He's outlanding him. He's landing at a notably higher percentage. He's landing the harder punches. What the fuck more can he do?

10 and 11f
I think Quintana won both of them.  Williams needs  KO to win in my book.

Williams-Quintana R12
I think Kellerman is scoring similarly to what I have. Lennox thinks it's very close and the winner of this round wins the fight, but Lennox also thinks Andre Dirrell boxes like Muhammad Ali.

Body trade with 1:15 left, close, tense, somewhat uneventful round thus far. Williams slaps and slaps, and Quintana throws a few punches that actually matter. I have come way from this entirely unimpressed with Paul Williams right now, at least in comparison to that "Most Avoided Man in Boxing" idea. But he won the final round on workrate.

Williams 10-9
Quintana 116-112

Lederman has it 115-113 Williams. Giving him the last two rounds.

Quintana
Im sticking with the Quintana by SD, though I think it should go unanimous.  Wouldnt surprised me if one of the judges scored it for Williams.  Many rounds were close.  But, overall, I think Quintana clearly won.  116-112.

THIS DESERVES CAPS!

Not to get all nationalistic, but three out of the four welterweight champions are now from Puerto Rico.  I'm glad the judges got it right.  And I'm glad the odds were 6-1.  Okay, I'm going out for a drink.
