Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Joel Casamayor v. Michael Katsidis

MAIN EVENT
For The Ring Magazine Lightweight Title
JOEL CASAMAYOR
Lightweight Champion
(35-3-1, 21 KO, Miramar, CA by way of Guantanamo, Cuba)
versus
MICHAEL KATSIDIS
Ring Magazine No. 6 Contender
(23-0, 20 KO, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia)

IBF Super Middleweight Eliminator
LIBRADO ANDRADE
Ranked No. 5 by The Ring
(26-1, 20 KO, La Habra, CA)
versus
ROBERT STIEGLITZ
(31-1, 19 KO, Magdeburg, Germany by way of Ejsk, Russia)

I'm still favoring Casamayor. And still hoping I'm wrong. I like Andrade to beat Stieglitz just due to his constant pressure.

The show starts at 10:05 ET.

Quick Result -- Rees loses to Kotelnik

As many expected, Welsh 140-pound titlist Gavin Rees lost in his first defense, falling to Andreas Kotelnik via 12th round TKO. I expected Kotelnik to win via UD, but I was rooting for Rees. Like most of the British/Welsh fighters, he's a scrapper with a likable attitude, but his only good win came last year when he upset Souleymane M'baye, who should've lost to Kotelnik in his previous fight if you want an opinion.

The better fighter won. Tough month to be Enzo Calzaghe, huh? He and Nacho Beristain should go get a beer together.

I'm picking Katsidis to KO Casamayor. I have no idea about Andrade vs. Stieglitz. I don't recall having seen Stieglitz fight before, and all I know of Andrade was his beating by Kessler.

R1
Andrade's round.

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 10:18 PM EDT   0 recs

R2
Stieglitz looking better with his jabs. Andrade gets inside and lands a series of uppercuts that snap S's head back. Andrade turning the round around to him. More uppercuts from A. Countershot by S. Series of good rights from S. S taking over now. Combinations.  Andrade comes on at the end, but it's not enough.

Good round. Even score on my card after two.

R3
Good exchanges in the middle of the ring, both men looking sharp.

S has A on the ropes now. S is bloody but landing. Andrade turns it around, lands uppercuts, but then S with uppercuts of his won.

Now A has S backing up. Andrade pushes him to the floor.

Close round. I give the edge to Andrade slightly.

29-28 Andrade.

ANDRADE-STIEGLITZ R4
Halfway into the round, I think Andrade is wearing Stieglitz out. But then there are some really REALLY nice shots from Stieglitz. Andrade is really getting slapped around right now.

Andrade comes back with a nice right to the body, and then Stieglitz slams him with another right to the jaw. Andrade UNLOADS with Steiglitz on the ropes, and Stieglitz comes out bleeding pretty heavy from the nose.

Hell of a good round.

Stieglitz 10-9

R4
Inside fighting. Good exchanges. S is outworking A right now, as A gets pushed back to the ropes.

Andrade turns it around somewhat. The announcers are overemphasizing Stieglitz's moderately bloody face. It's no big deal.

Stieglitz throws more and wins the round on superior activity.

R5
This is turning into a good fight. Lots of excellent counterpunching, especially by Stieglitz. AS the round progresses, they are beginning to stand in the middle of the round and exchange, which should favor the iron chin of A.

Uppercuts from Andrade have S backing up. A's round.

3-2 Andrade.

ANDRADE-STIEGLITZ R5
Not a bad little scrap so far. Stieglitz is a lot more competitive than Michel Trabant was  against Andre Berto, you can say that. He's a good looking fighter.

Stieglitz has a real killer instinct. When he smells blood, he takes the risk and goes after Andrade. That's always fun. And he's throwing some serious leather, a lot bigger punching than I expected out of a guy with 19 KO in 31 wins -- which isn't a BAD rate or anything, but he's throwing some wicked stuff in there.

There's a nasty uppercut from Stieglitz. As always, Andrade fights forward, keeps going, though this this isn't Andrade-Mack levels of activity from Andrade. Stieglitz looks like the much more polished boxer, I think. There are some nice shots from Stieglitz, but Andrade is picking off some stuff, too, keeping his hands higher than we've seen in the past. Either he has more respect for Stieglitz than he did Mack, or he's learned that you do have to defend at SOME point.

Nice short left hook from Andrade, and now he's backing Stieglitz down. This is another good round, tons of action from both guys, both cutting a great pace. Andrade keeps throwing, backing Stieglitz into the ropes, and he may have stolen that round. I didn't think he was winning it as clearly as the commentators did.

Andrade 48-47

ANDRADE-STIEGLITZ R6
When they clinch, they're generally fighting out of it. Andrade is climbing my list of favorite fighters to watch, and I'll tell you what, Stieglitz is no slouch himself.

Stieglitz with a nice digging shot to the body and a combo, and Andrade comes right back on him. Andrade just does not show pain. He's an iceman.

Jabs from Stieglitz, which is one punch he definitely has on Andrade. Librado's jab is fairly lazy and not very effective, and I've never seen it be much different. Stieglitz blocks two uppercuts, and comes back with some nice work. The pace has slowed ever so slightly, making it still, you know, pretty good.

Stieglitz with three nice right hands, and he's winning this round. Beautiful left hook from Stieglitz over Andrade's right, but then Andrade just comes RIGHT BACK on him. STIEGLITZ IS BEING HAMMERED IN THE CORNER -- he's blocking a lot, but standing there like that gets fights stopped.

I think Stieglitz won enough of this round, but Librado keeps charging late.

Stieglitz 10-9

onward
With Scott back, I won't be doing round by round comments anymore, but I'll check in every now and then with my two cents.

Slower round. S is faster than A, but A seems tougher. Both men taking the round off somewhat.

Andrade with several consecutive jabs reopens S's cut and steals the round with his aggression, dominating the last 20 seconds completely.

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 10:38 PM EDT   0 recs

ANDRADE-STIEGLITZ R7
There's a good chance Andrade is stealing a lot of rounds late in this fight. He could well be up big on the official cards.

And there it is -- Hurrld even has it 59-55 for Andrade.

Jesus, they are trading now, and Stieglitz wins the exchange with a nasty right hand, then follows up with another good one. Right to the body from Andrade sneaks in. There's a right from Andrade, and Stieglitz fires back with a three-punch combo. This is a good damn fight!

Left by Andrade, and then another one moments later. Stieglitz wants to combo up, but Andrade is cutting off a lot of it. This is a tough fight to score, if you ask me. Final 30 seconds of the round, let's see if Andrade charges again.

Right to the body from Librado. Yeah, he's winning the last 30 seconds again. And with a round this  close, that gives him the nod.

Andrade 67-66

ANDRADE-STIEGLITZ R8
Hurrld has it 69-64 now.

Two BRUTAL rights from Stieglitz, and again they're just totally shaken off by Andrade. He is unreal.

Andrade is digging hard to the body, and NAILS him with a right, chases him across the ring, and IT'S OVER! The referee calls it off with Stieglitz being hammered!

Good fight, great finish by Librado Andrade.

Librado Andrade TKO-8

Boy, I really like this guy. He's a by God FIGHTER. Good performance by Stieglitz tonight, too. He fought hard.

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 10:45 PM EDT   0 recs

Andrade
He's now mandatory challenger for Lucian Bute. Count me in for that fight.

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 10:47 PM EDT   0 recs

Casamayor out first
Grumble grumble grumble grumble.

He's got a lot to prove tonight. He could be fighting with a big chip on his shoulder.

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 10:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Fun undercard
I enjoyed that fight, and now I hope to enjoy Casamayor getting knocked out. He earned an enemy after his last despicable and utterly unearned win. I know it wasn't his fault he was gifted the decision, but it still didn't sit well with me.

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 10:55 PM EDT   0 recs

decision wasn't his fault
But the awful fight was.

Yo
What's up, guys.  Good first fight.

I like Casamayor here by decision.  Or, at 4.5-to-1 odds, my pocket does, at least.

y'know
I like Katsidis, but that entrance of his is only slightly -- oh boy, Casamayor jumps right in his shit.

Wow, Casamayor looks really, really pissed off tonight. This could be a sleeper great fight.

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT   0 recs

what I was going to say
Katsidis' entrance is a little dorky and feels like a guy who buys his own shit a bit too much.

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 10:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Dorky for sure
That was a bad decision, that, er, helmet.

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 10:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I love how nothing seems to faze Katsidis
Casamayor got in his face and Katsidis didn't even move an each. Love it.

Too bad fights are won in the ring not in the entrance.

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R1
I don't get into all that corny "There was a feeling in the air..." shit too often, but this feels like it's going to be a mean fight. Casamayor looks dialed in and angry.

These two are ready to fight.

Here we go.

Casamayor with a slippery little left to start, and he's bouncing around at a distance, and WHAM, Casamayor sticks him, and DOWN GOES KATSIDIS!

Casamayor comes right back at him, and he's showing his hand speed. BAM! LEFT HAND, KATSIDIS DOWN AGAIN!

RIGHT ON THE BUTTON!

Wow.

Katsidis looks tight and tense. He needs to get this round out of his system. He can still win this fight, but Casamayor looks intense.

Where was this guy in November?

Casamayor is in Katsidis' head, and Katsidis isn't getting anything off. Casamayor is shutting him out this round, and two knockdowns? Who saw that coming?

Katsidis charges with a right, but Joel slips it.

There's a wake-up round for Michael Katsidis. This is the big leagues.

Casamayor 10-7

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 11:02 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R2
Now we see how Katsidis responds.

Katsidis with a quick flurry, Casamayor backs him up and shuts it down. Katsidis looks a little more relaxed already this round, throwing his punches with some confidence, but he's still going to have to land something big. Casamayor, like it or not, is clinching on those flurries and stopping them from going too far.

Casamayor with another nice left, and now Casamayor is caught off balance, and clinches again. He's clinching like a champion now. But a lot of that is due to Katsidis' lunging.

Casamayor looks like he's toying with Katsidis at this point, holding his hands low, brushing off his advances, and landing little scoring shots. Katsidis with a couple of decent shots, and his eye is already cut in the old familiar place, right over his left eye.

Hard right from Katsidis, but Casamayor DRILLS him with an even better left. This is not looking good for Michael Katsidis fans, let's put it that way. Casamayor is outclassing him, playing with him mentally and even physically.

Casamayor 20-16

Rd 2...
Casamayor is getting a little cocky (what else is new?) and dropping his hands.  On the other hand, if he's proven one thing in his career is that he's got a hell of a chin.  Not everyone can go 12 hard with Freitas and Corrales...

After two, Casamayor 20-16

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R3
This is the Joel Casamayor I used to be a fan of, even if he is arrogant. The guy that was just an outstanding fighter and could make good fighters look bad. So far, this is a welcome back party to one of the best lightweights in the world.

Katsidis with a little flurry, Casamayor lets him know it didn't hurt him. Joel's been in with hard hitters before, to say the least.

There's some decent stuff from Katsidis, as he's looking to make it more of a barroom brawl. He's throwing good leather now, and while Casamayor is presenting the "didn't hurt" face, that stuff is scoring.

And Joel fights back. WHERE WAS JOEL CASAMAYOR IN NOVEMBER? This guy wouldn't slaughtered Santa Cruz.

The pace is all Casamayor. He's landing more punches, dictating where and when the fight happens, and showing his skills. He's blocking a lot of good stuff, not getting hit with anything square, and just plain dominating Katsidis at this point. And this was Michael's best round.

Casamayor 10-9
Casamayor 30-25

Casamayor
Casamayor has dominated every round, but his showboating and clinching have already gotten on my nerves big time. Get 'em Mike!

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 11:10 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R4
Nice body shots from Katsidis, and Casamayor is starting to dance more now, looking to avoid action. That's Joel all over. He's a polarizing fighter, but damn if he's not a good one when he's on. And tonight, he's on.

Casamayor with two lefts to the body, the second a little low. KATSIDIS NAILS CASAMAYOR, AND JOEL IS HURT! Right hand lands! This is popping off, and Joel is getting hurt now!

Wow!

Right to the chest from Katsidis. Casamayor is being pummeled this round! And they exchange hard shots!

About a minute to go. This has been a good night of boxing.

HARD left from Katsidis staggers Joel again. Right hand! Casa with a left! Casamayor is backed up and STILL getting hurt!

This is where some dramatic music would swell were this a Rocky movie. This is becoming a FIGHT.

Katsidis 10-9
Casamayor 39-35

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 11:14 PM EDT   0 recs

Casamayor
Quit with the clinches! Go Mike! Knock his punk ass out!

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 11:15 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R5
Katsidis has some swelling under the right eye now.

They keep getting dangerously close to really slamming their heads together.

Good shots from Katsidis again, and again he shakes Casamayor. Joel is no longer landing the left hand, and it's because, as Bob Papa notes, Katsidis has gotten his right hand up to pick it off. Better than getting knocked down.

Casamayor now looks like he's totally out of rhythm, and Katsidis is backing him down the entire round, landing a few good shots here and there and winning his second straight frame.

We've got a momentum shift, and there's a low blow from Katsidis, which gets warned. HARD shots to the body from Katsidis are hurting Casamayor, and clearly so.

Another good round for Katsidis. Damn, you couldn't ask for much more out of the two fights tonight.

Katsidis 10-9
Casamayor 48-45

by SC on Mar 22, 2008 11:18 PM EDT   0 recs

At some point
Casamayor is going to clinch 90% of every round until the ref does something about it. He is not showing the heart of a fighter. He is looking like a brat who taunts and dances until the fight comes to him, and when it does, he clinches, and clinches...

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R6
Katsidis comes out throwing again. I think he knows that's how to beat Casamayor given the hole he got himself into. Actually that was the way to do it from the opening bell.

More good body work from Katsidis, and a shot up top from Casamayor. Those body shots that Katsidis keeps landing are really going to start adding up. Casamayor is 36, after all. Stamina is always going to be an issue from here on out, no matter how tip-top he keeps his shape.

HARD left hook from Katsidis and CASAMAYOR IS KNOCKED OUT OF THE RING WITH A RIGHT HAND!

HE'S BACK IN THE RING AT 8!

JESUS CHRIST!

Katsidis JUMPS ON HIM AGAIN! WHAT A FIGHT WE'VE GOT NOW!

Katsidis 10-8
Casamayor 56-55

Hah!
Now that's what I'm talking about!

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 11:22 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R7
And that knockdown was started by a brutal body shot -- those are landing, and hard. We've got a toss-up now.

WOW, Katsidis SHOVES Casamayor to the mat. This is a mean fight, just like I thought in the intros. Harold has it 56-55 for Katsidis now, too.

ANOTHER hard right from Katsidis, and another! Casamayor's clinches are now becoming too much in the way of life-saving efforts than defensive or mental tactics.

Casamayor with a straight left! Right hand from Katsidis. Trade of shots against the ropes. Left hand from Casamayor lands nicely.

Right from Katsidis comes up short, and a counter left from Joel does the same. Big right from Katsidis, and Casa clinches again before the bell.

Katsidis 10-9
65-65 through seven

Hell of a dramatic fight so far. It'd be even better without Casamayor's clinches.

Katsidis
Wow, I really like this guy. What a slugger. I even loved that shove he gave Casamayor after his three hundredth clinch. He's earned a fan tonight. A lot of fans I bet.

by Matt Miller on Mar 22, 2008 11:28 PM EDT   0 recs

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R8
The pace is now all Katsidis, while early on it was all Casamayor. Joel is still landing enough sneaky shots to worry me about the judges. I like counter-punchers, too, but Joel is now looking closer to the fighter from the Santa Cruz bout than the guy that came out storming in this one.

They're both throwing nice stuff now, but Katsidis is snapping Casamayor's head back at will it seems.

Katsidis misses a big left, and tries to catch Joel walking with a right, but comes up short. Neither guy landed anything huge this round, but Katsidis landed the better punches and pressed the action. After going down two times in the first round, he's taken over this fight.

I have Casamayor up right now, 75-74.

And, Matt, I thought that shove was pretty damn unportsmanlike, and cause for a point deduction.  Seriously.  I'm on my high horse.

CASAMAYOR-KATSIDIS R9
Nut shot from Casamayr, and Casamayor loses a point. I don't know if I agree with that, but it sticks.

Katsidis swings for the fences with a wild right and misses badly. Nice left from Casamayor, and then a straight left follows. Katsidis looks like he's being hurt a little, and Casamayor is looking sharper again. Joel will have to do something special, I think. This kid is double tough.

Less clinching from Joel this round, back to trying to bait Katsidis into big counter opportunities. Jab from Casamayor takes some steam off of a Katsidis right hand, and Casamayor takes his first round since the third.

Casamayor 10-9
84-84

Katsidis has no idea what round it is. He thinks it's the 11th, and he's adamant about it.

Well that sucked. Disappointing to say the least (though obviously an entertaining fight in many ways). I hate Casamayor's style top to toe. If I never see him fight again, it won't be too soon.
