Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Cory Spinks v. Verno Phillips

MAIN EVENT
For IBF Junior Middleweight Title
CORY SPINKS
IBF Champion
Ring Magazine No. 1 Ranked Junior Middleweight

(36-4, 11 KO, St. Louis, MO)
versus
VERNO PHILLIPS
Ring Magazine No. 9 Ranked Junior Middleweight
(41-10-1, 21 KO, Denver, CO, by way of Belize City, Belize)

Junior Welterweights
DEVON ALEXANDER
(14-0, 8 KO, St. Louis, MO)
versus
MIGUEL CALLIST
(24-6-1, 17 KO, Colon, Panama)

It's a showcase live on DonKingNetwork.TV tonight for two St. Louis southpaws at the Scottrade Center.

I'm going to TRY to watch this -- for one thing, it starts at 8PM ET, and I might not be home quite in time to catch all of the opening bout. Plus, you never know how well webcasts are going to work.

I want to see these fights, particularly the on-paper wretched Spinks-Phillips affair, because as I said before, to appreciate the great fights, you gotta see the bad ones. Also I'd just kind of like to support the idea of more cards live online. Don King has a great idea with this. Spinks is hard to sell to any TV network because of his style, but he's a legitimately good fighter and a major titleholder. Getting him the biggest possible audience is good work by King.

The horribly written press release was something else, though, as it described Chop-Chop Corley as on the downside of his career, while 33-year old Miguel Callist is apparently "on the rise." Callist can punch, but he's been knocked out in all six of his losses. It's good to see Alexander fighting again so quickly after his win over Corley in January, though.

And, predictably, the stream isn't up yet.

I'm glad I'm not actually looking forward to this or anything.

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 8:08 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah
Now it's nothing but errors. They probably didn't actually get their servers ready for the massive amount of fans tuning in to see Cory Spinks duke it out.

8:37 PM!
And finally a live link goes up. Cruiserweights Francisco Palacios (13-0) and Zack Page (14-18-1) are up now, in the sixth round. PBP guy seems to be conveying that Page is doing better than expected.

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 8:40 PM EDT   0 recs

not a bad stream at all
Quality is fine, sound is good. Better than I anticipated, honestly.

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 8:41 PM EDT   0 recs

Palacios UD Page
As expected.

Now the stream is stalled.

and it's back
Super middleweights next: Marcus Johnson (12-0, 9 KO) v. Jose Medina (14-10, 10 KO)

Eight-rounder.

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:02 PM EDT   0 recs

JOHNSON-MEDINA R1
Oh, why not? This is my first time seeing Johnson. The stream says Johnson is actually 13-0 (10). Either way.

Wait... "Too Much" Johnson?

Johnson has a big height advantage, and comes out looking to use it, firing straight shots from a distance, and trying to uppercut Medina when he comes inside.

Medina wants to slug, which is probably his only hope. Medina with a nice body shot, and Johnson returns the favor. For a super middle, I really like Johnson's build.

WHAM! Medina goes down on a VICIOUS body shot. He's not getting up.

Right to the liver. He wasted him.

Marcus Johnson KO-1

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:06 PM EDT   0 recs

boy
That was a perfect sequence. Right to the body, left hook upstairs to lift Medina's hand, and then a perfect left to the liver. That was a killer shot.

this interview is horrible
"Are you ready for a top ten opponent right now?"

What a fucking idiotic question. Of course he says yes, but if you put Johnson in with any top tenner at 168, it'd be lights out.

oh boy another swing fight
Six-rounder between John Jackson (10-1, 10 KO) v. Leroy Newton (6-10-1, 4 KO)

Leroy is from Michigan City -- I LIVE NEAR THERE WOOOO

He's going to get smoked.

re:
140 pounders.

My girlfriend is originally from Michigan City, so she's all about Leroy "Rootin' Tootin" Newton -- and not John "Action" Jackson.

JACKSON-NEWTON R1
Rootin' Tootin' Newton is getting killed right away. This is not going to last long.

And down goes Rootin' Tootin' Newton. He'll fight on.

Rootin' Tootin' tries to tackle Jackson or something.

Rootin' Tootin' Newton is about to get fuckin' creamed.

Down he goes again -- uhh, no, they wave it off. He takes a knee and they don't call it a knockdown.

Jackson jumps right back on him. Rootin' Tootin' Newton isn't even fighting back. They should really stop this.

This is like a really uneven streetfight.

RIGHT HAND!

GOODNIGHT!

John Jackson KO-1

That was a SHOT.

Are the guys on the undercard just not deserving of a national anthem before their fights? Are they lower-class citizens? Why only an anthem before the two main events?

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:27 PM EDT   0 recs

god
This whole broadcast reeks of Don King. I mean, I love Don, who earlier told me to remember the Alamo, but this talking-up of mediocre fighters is just grating as all hell.

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R1
"At 33, (Callist) is right in the prime of his career."

Fuckin' since when? This broadcast is making up its own rules.

Big straight left from Alexander just misses, as Callist dances around Alexander, shimmying in a circle around the entire ring. Callist keeps getting caught off balance as he lazily wanders in after he circles. It's like duck duck goose but he gets punched as soon as he says GOOSE!

Alexander has quicker hands, that's for sure. Callist misses with a humming right hook. This was a pretty simple round.

Alexander 10-9

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:40 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R2
Second round is the same as the first, with Callist circling and Alexander jabbing away, not landing much of any substance, going, "HUH! HAH! HAH! HUH!"

Alexander lands a body shot and gets popped upstairs. Alexander is actually not defending well off of the punch and getting hit with some stuff that could be a problem.

You know, it would appear as though if Callist was willing to really engage, he might actually be able to beat Alexander, whose defense has been spotty so far and whose punches aren't consistently getting home. Instead, Callist has spent the first two rounds occasionally countering and little else.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 20-18

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:44 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R3
Callist just threw and missed a Bald Bull uppercut.

Not much of a fight, though not bad or anything. Alexander is landing better shots and staying busier and clearly winning the fight. This actually reminds me somewhat of Cherry-Ferguson from the Mayweather-Hatton undercard. It's OK action, but we're not looking at punchers here.

Jab, jab, jab, jab, jab, jab, jab, and then Alexander tries to load up on a left hand. Callist is getting dominated.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 30-27

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:48 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R4
Alexander lands a nice left.

Bob Sherman has a real hard-on for Alexander. I expect the same treatment for Spinks later on.

"Call your friends! Tell them that the championship fight is still coming! Tell 'em they can get it free on the intanet! Lotta people might not know!"

If I called my friends and told them to watch Cory Spinks fight, I'd have a lot of apologizing to do in the morning.

Alexander dominates another round. This kid is really talented.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 40-36

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:52 PM EDT   0 recs

I like Kevin Cunningham
He's on Alexander for not listening. "What are you Mike Tyson now or some bullshit? When you gonna throw a fuckin' combination?"

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:53 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R5
Nice shot from Alexander, and he's starting to really unload. Callist might have been slightly hurt. Alexander is really on him now, and Callist holds on to him with a well-timed clinch.

Callist's punches have no snap, it seems. He's eating jabs like a true professional, though.

Really, this has become decidedly one-sided.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 50-45

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 9:56 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R6
Yep -- decidedly one-sided. Alexander is outclassing Callist, which is a pretty good sign that he's absolutely for real. At this point, it's time for Callist to go to Plan B. Doesn't look like he has one.

Alexander swarms on him again, and again Callist grabs and shoves his way off the ropes. Callist now looks awful -- weak, unfocused, even disinterested. He's winging some flashy hands low haymaker shit, but there doesn't look like there's anything on them, even when they happen to land.

Callist is doing lots of cutesy dancing B.S. -- I don't know why, he's not winning a single round so far.

Bob Sherman takes the old position of a promoter's pet broadcaster trying to defend what is essentially a foregone conclusion fight with a crowd getting restless.

He also doesn't understand that they aren't booing the fight, but Callist's dancing shit.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 60-54

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:01 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R7
Alexander lands a heavy right, so Callist gets on his horse. That's been an unfortunately notable portion of the fight.

Good body work from Alexander, as Callist continues to literally look like he doesn't care about being here anymore. Alexander is unloading on him at center right, and he looks like he might be punching himself out.

Callist gets hit with another good shot, and he's hurt. He's not throwing any punches back. If he was on the ropes, a referee might stop this one.

And Alexander chops away with more right hands. He has killed Callist this round. Either Callist is monstrously tough -- and the six times he's been knocked out disagree with that notion -- or Alexander REALLY isn't a puncher. Like, even less of one than most people believe.

Alexander 10-8 without a knockdown
Alexander 70-62

That was as one-sided a round as you can get without a knockdown.

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:05 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R8
It'd be peaches if Devon Alexander could close the show soon. This is total dominance.

Slower pace this round, as Alexander might have worn himself out. Yet even without doing much he's winning the round, because Callist is doing even less. To call Callist's performance tonight "counter-punching" is an insult to counter punching.

Again, if Callist has a Plan B, the time has come and gone to use it.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 80-71

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:08 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R9
Alexander goes back to beating the crap out of Callist, who is doing nothing more than running away. This has turned into a really shitty fight, but that's no fault of Devon Alexander. Miguel Callist is not fighting. This is some awful performance from him.

First half of the round was all Alexander, second half was all Callist running away.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 90-80

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:12 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R10
And again, the only action is Alexander beating the crap out Callist, who just runs and runs. He's not even fighting. This has become a joke.

When he does punch, it's entirely ineffective. So whatever. Maybe just fall down or stop.

After this, I never want to see Miguel Callist fight again.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 100-89

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:16 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R11
Hey, look, Callist gets staggered again. And runs away. Again.

Rinse, repeat. It happens two more times.

"Devon Alexander would love to finish this thing off."

I'd love it, too.

This slaughter job can't end fast enough.

Alexander 10-9
Alexander 110-98

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:20 PM EDT   0 recs

ALEXANDER-CALLIST R12
If Callist has won a single round, beats m e which one it was.

DOWN GOES CALLIST! He smiles and shimmies and does all that stuff, and pretends he wasn't knocked down. He's just coming off terribly tonight. The guy doesn't fight and showboats like he's hot shit.

Alexander knocks him back again, but doesn't really follow up. If I was Devon Alexander, I wouldn't even pursue the rest of this round. Why bother? This this is beyond in the bag. I know that wouldn't win any fans, and since I'm a fan I'm glad Alexander won't do that, but hey.

Callist grabs onto the top rope to stop himself from going down again.

20 seconds left.

The rest of this round was so one-sided that I'm knocking an extra extra point off of Callist's score. That was a hideous performance he just turned in.

Alexander 10-7
Alexander 120-105

"Good show! Good show!"

My ass.

DEVON ALEXANDER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

So Alexander leaves with two more meaningless trinkets after an utterly dominant performance. He ripped Callist apart.

Spinks' entrance
How is the St. Louis fighter, fighting in St. Louis, using a Chicago rapper's song?

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:46 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R1
Phillips catches Spinks with a few quick rights as Cory keeps jabbing away from a comfortable range. Phillips is doing his best to work inside on Spinks, throwing some big whiffs.

Spinks isn't landing much of any note, laying back a lot and just sort of waiting. Sherman thinks Spinks won the round. I disagree.

Phillips 10-9

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:54 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R2
Cory Spinks, really, os one of those guys I really wish was more exciting than he is. He's a very gifted boxer, very intelligent, and seems like a good dude even. But God is he dull.

Nice left hook from Phillips, ignored by Sherman in favor of Spinks' straight left that landed at the same time. Two more good rights from Verno, but Spinks is landing some stuff that is scoring, even if he's not going to hurt Phillips no matter what he does.

Phillips warned for a low blow. To be fair, this is a lot more exciting so far than Taylor-Spinks was. Phillips came to scrap, and he's doing what he can with a very good opponent.

Tough round to call.

Spinks 10-9
19-19

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 10:58 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R3
Phillips is throwing enough to keep this interesting, but Cory's able to slip most everything. And there goes Spinks with a little flurry of pitty-pat slap punches.

Phillips with a nice right hand, but Cory is doing a good job of countering everything Verno lands, too. Verno's looking a little tired already. Chasing Spinks is not easy work.

Phillips misses a home run uppercut, and Cory Spinks is settling into his familiar groove at this point.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 29-28

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:02 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R4
Bob Sherman is doing his damnedest to convince me that this is truly worth watching, but the truth is, this is your run of the mill Spinks fight. It's not absolutely boring, but we're getting to that point where Spinks is doing what he has to do to win rounds and not a single thing more. He's using his feet to avoid Verno's punches and we're not getting a whole lot of real action.

Yep, it's a Spinks fight.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 39-37

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:06 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R5
Phillips staggers Spinks with a right hand, but Spinks hangs on, as he usually does. Spinks with some nice offense in return. Look, I know we're not getting a knockout in this fight, but I'd love it if the two of them thought it was possible.

Phillips' corner got on him for not jabbing between rounds, and he's still not doing it. He's just lunging in.

The crowd is booing the fight. In Spinks' hometown. So he might not even be able to draw flies in St. Louis anymore. Sherman doesn't like it. "This is how Cory Spinks fights." Well, that doesn't mean people have to like it.

I actually thought Phillips grabbed this round, too, but Bob Sherman is just all about Cory Spinks.

Phillips 10-9
Spinks 48-47

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:10 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R6
I just realized I keep calling Bob Sheridan "Bob Sherman." Am I high?

I also realize I seem like I'm hating on Colonel Bob. I'm not, really. I think he's a good PBP man. He could use a color commentator to work with, but he does a fine job soloing, too.

I wonder if Bob is scoring all those flicking right hands that are a foot away from landing for Spinks?

That was another round of boxing between Cory Spinks and Verno Phillips. The crowd is REALLY starting to show their distaste.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 58-56

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:14 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R7
Truthfully, Phillips can't jab because Cory doesn't allow him to.

Fuck it -- this fight sucks. It's your average Cory Spinks experience. I'm tired of trying to be nice about this.

Phillips nails Spinks with a good shot, but Spinks comes back and lands multiple punches. I also don't want to sound like I'm blaming this entirely on Spinks. Phillips' gameplan is a little weird.

BIG shot from Phillips rattles Spinks' cage. A few good punches, but Phillips loses another fairly close round.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 68-65

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:18 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R8
Phillips is fighting like a 15-year old playing a video game. Loading up on big punches, mostly missing, eating jabs, and occasionally landing something big.

Eighth round is more of the same. Spinks is winning fairly handily.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 78-74

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:22 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R9
Verno, God bless him, is trying to look for a knockout shit. But he's just not fast enough to be doing that lunging power punch stuff. It's not landing. And even when it does, he doesn't appear to have the power to really hurt Spinks. Certainly not the one-punch power to do it, because I can't remember when -- or if -- he last landed a combination.

Phillips finally seems to hurt Spinks with a hard right hand, and he stings him a few more times. Spinks tried to mix it up, and Phillips wins that fight. Cory moving smokes Verno -- Cory standing still can get in trouble, because Phillips does not fear his power.

Phillips 10-9
Spinks 87-84

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:26 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R10
Sheridan seems absolutely convinced that Cory Spinks is up eight rounds to one.

The action dies again in the first two minutes of this round, and it's up for grabs with a minute to go.

After some action in the ninth, the tenth is a bum round.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 97-93

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:30 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R11
Body shots from Phillips score, and Spinks gets back to moving away from him. He's actually running away from him now.

Back to the usual Spinks-won round. He's got this in the bag. And we're about to enter the last championship round of Verno Phillips' career.

Spinks 10-9
Spinks 107-102

by SC on Mar 27, 2008 11:34 PM EDT   0 recs

SPINKS-PHILLIPS R12
Sheridan doesn't seem to realize that 21 knockouts in 41 wins is not a good rate. Phillips is no puncher.

Phillips trips on Spinks' foot, and appeared to get punched on the way down. But it's rightly ruled a trip.

I don't know why Spinks is standing and trading with Phillips this round. Maybe he doesn't think Phillips can hurt him either and wants to put on a decent 12th round show.

Either way, Phillips is winning the round by landing some nice, clean shots. But we're not going to get a miracle KO.

Phillips 10-9
Spinks 116-112

Big boos at the bell.

SPINKS-PHILLIPS OFFICIAL DECISION

VERNO PHILLIPS VIA SPLIT DECISION

What the fuck?

Oh boy.

I never wanted to be put into this position, but Cory Spinks just got robbed.

Bob Sheridan did score it way, way too wide for Spinks, but I did not see that coming.
