Depending on how the Orioles-Rays game is going, I might duck out of that early to catch part of the Showtime card at 9. In fact, I probably will. I'm jonesing for some boxing right now. We haven't done a fight here since March 27, and that had Cory Spinks and "Rootin' Tootin'" Newton.

Again, my picks for tonight: Cotto TKO-6, Cintron TKO-8, Woods UD Tarver, Dawson UD Johnson. I'm almost certain Dawson-Johnson will be up first on Showtime, which is further incentive to catch the first part of their show, which starts at 9PM ET from Tampa, Tarver's hometown in which he can't draw flies to shit unless he's fighting Roy Jones.

The HBO card is live from the wonderful Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, and begins at 10PM ET. We'll be here -- you should be too.

gonna catch Dawson-Johnson
I'm really geeked for some boxing. FIGHT NIGHT BABY

Dawson-Johnson R1
I hate when a fight is 20 seconds in and one of the commenators says something like, "Glen Johnson already in this first round is showing the ability to..."

It's 20 seconds, dude.

Dawson with a straight left that nails Johnson, and a sneaky left to the body. His hand speed is very evident. Already in this first round...

Nice right from Dawson, who looks quite good so far. Johnson is just not getting off at all. There are two lefts from Johnson just as I say that, then a quick right hand down the pipe. And now they start throwing some hard leather at the end of the round.

Dawson 10-9

Dawson-Johnson R2
Hard right from Johnson, and Dawson responds by punching in mass volume. Dawson's throwing more, Johnson is waiting to land perfect punches.

Straight left from Dawson, and Johnson tries to dig in downstairs, but gets met with two thudding shots from both of Dawson's hands. Dawson works to the body, then goes back up top. Johnson with a right. Dawson with two lefts down the middle after he makes Johnson miss.

Johnson with a right to the chin, left hook lands after. Dawson comes back with another left down the middle. Good stuff so far.

Dawson with a quick flurry at the end of the round. I think he won this one, but it was close.

Dawson 10-9
Dawson 20-18

Dawson-Johnson R3
Dawson comes out working the jab, then goes down to the body with nice results.

Dawson's movement is really effective right now, lots of lateral movement and making Johnson work hard to get at him. He's really outboxing and out-thinking Glen Johnson, and also using his height to his advantage.

There's a straight right from Johnson, but he's losing another round. Dawson is sticking in the right hand pretty well. There's a counter right from Johnson, and two uppercuts, and Dawson looks a little bit hurt. Dawson fires back, and with 30 seconds left they're throwing good stuff.

Steve Albert's "Tremendous ebb and flow! It has been NON-STOP!" stuff is a bit overbearing. This is good, but let's not act like it's Vazquez-Marquez. No holding, though.

BIG right from Johnson, and Dawson better stay out of the inside. Johnson is showboating and hoping to take a mental stand here. He stole this round.

Johnson 10-9
Dawson 29-28

Dawson-Johnson R4
Dawson does not look mentally there coming out for the fourth round. This could be trouble.

Sneaky left catches Dawson. Dawson trying to use his speed, but Johnson keeps moving in on him. I don't think he has the real power to hurt Glen Johnson, who has faced punchers and can take a shot with the best of them.

Johnson with a shot to the body, then a right to the head that seems to stick. Johnson is again hurting him on the inside. Dawson is backpedaling a lot here. He looks a little bit lost.

Dawson comes back with some nice stuff, including a hard right. Johnson hits him again, Dawson answers. This is turning into a good damn fight.

Johnson is dictating the majority of this fight now, though Dawson lands a stiff left at the end of the round. Dawson seemed to regain his legs during the round.

Dawson-Johnson R5
Dawson takes pace back early in the fifth, landing some good shots on combinations.

Johnson backs him down with another right, and that punch might be the difference if this comes down to a war of attrition. Hammering to the body from both guys. This is quite a solid fight, and Glen is showing that he's far from faded. We'll see if he still has the stamina to maintain this pressure over a full championship fight, but it looks like he's going to.

Johnson is smothering him on the inside, not landing huge punches, but there's a big left hook that bounces off Dawson's face. Big, big round for Glen Johnson.

Johnson 10-9
Johnson 48-47

Dawson-Johnson R6
If you put stock into body language, Johnson is in Dawson's head.

Johnson is really all over Dawson at this point. He's not dominating him in a highly visual sense, not beating him around the ring or totally overwhelming him. But he's wearing him out and clearly dictating where and how this fight is going. Dawson is moving the hell away from Johnson and even garnering some boos at this point. Dawson's just trying to figure out how to win these rounds.

And I think he might be winning this one, but it's stealable with 30 seconds left. Dawson has definitely slowed Johnson down in the sixth, and as we reach the halfway point, I think we're back to even on the cards.

Dawson 10-9, but not pretty

Dawson-Johnson R7
VICIOUS right hand from Johnson, but Dawson fires right back with a hard, hard right hook. When Johnson opens up, Dawson generally gets back at him, and that's pretty admirable.

I like what Dawson is doing the last two rounds, as he's boxing to his strengths and staying away from Johnson's. Dawson looks like he's wearing Johnson down just by making him chase most of the time. Dawson with a combo, and Johnson is looking slow.

Johnson eats a right to the ribs and then one off the side of the head, but Johnson gives a right back. Dawson has momentum now.

Dawson 10-9
Dawson 67-66

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 9:48 PM EDT   0 recs

Dawson-Johnson R8
First minute of the round belongs to Johnson, but Dawson isn't getting caught with anything stupid. He ate some big shots early on and didn't like it, nor should he. He should out-quick Johnson, and now he is.

Nice combo by Dawson, and Johnson just isn't looking like he's going to be able to win rounds from here on out. He's being run ragged by Dawson fighting smart.

Johnson did land a nice shot, but it was a one-and-done. Johnson gets Dawson to go inside and lands some nice stuff, but it's not enough to win the round.

Dawson 10-9
Dawson 77-75

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 9:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Dawson-Johnson R9
Dawson is sweeping on the press row scores. Al has it 77-75.

Chopping right from Johnson backs Dawson down, and another one lands. Johnson still has a chance in this fight. He's not out of it. But if it keeps gong the way it is, it'll be Dawson's night on the record books.

Hopefully HBO doesn't really start until 10:15/10:20, which is likely.

Close round with a minute left. Body shots from Dawson land glancingly, he doesn't dig them home because he's a hair too far away.

30 seconds left in the round, and we have a toss-up round on our hands. Straight left from Dawson. Right to the body from Johnson after two misses upstairs. Left from Dawson, and they trade at the bell. Very tough round to score.

Johnson 10-9
Dawson 86-85

Dawson-Johnson R10
Championship rounds!

Dawson looks sharp with a body combo, and Johnson has no answer. Glen Johnson is such a sturdy fighter. Is there really anything that he does exceptionally well? He doesn't have great power, doesn't even have good hand speed, doesn't move around particularly well, but he throws good punches, works the body well, has a great set of whiskers, and never gets too far out of a fight.

Dawson is landing good stuff, but Johnson doesn't even seem fazed at any point. JOHNSON WITH A BIG RIGHT! DAWSON IS HURT!

40 seconds left to go in the round! Johnson opens up and looks for another big shot! Dawson is staggered and wobbly here -- Johnson is still punching, Dawson tries to fight back and hold on. One more big shot could put this away.

Hard right lands, but Dawson survives the round! Wow!

Johnson 10-9

GOD
That was a brutal right, right on the button.

Dawson-Johnson R11
Dawson better hope his legs are strong.

Johnson is coming right at him. We might be seeing something here. Dawson is just trying to cover up and avoid those rights. HUGE right from Johnson! Dawson is hurt again. He's leaning, but not clinching, which is very smart. It keeps Johnson from getting a chance to catch him after a break.

Another right from Johnson, but here comes Chad Dawson! Uppercuts from Johnson -- they're trading like hell. Steve's "it's Vazquez-Marquez only bigger!" is a bit much, but hey.

Johnson is punching himself silly to win this fight. Left hook lands, chopping right lands, and Dawson's hurt again. Dawson fires two shots, both are clipped off by Johnson's defense.

This has been one hell of a good fight, and I think Glen Johnson is winning it.

I gave Dawson 7-9, Johnson obviously 10, I also gave Johnson 11. So despite Johnson's heroic effort, on my card anyway, he needs either a KO or a 2-point round to win.

Dawson-Johnson R12
Three more minutes and a decision, and then we go over to HBO. Antonio Tarver can suck it.

A minute in, no one is taking clear control, but they both continue to fight. Dawson is throwing better combinations again, but there's a body shot from Johnson.

Hard right, hard left from Johnson, both snuck up on Dawson while their heads were down. Right to the body at the end of a combo from Dawson.

Boy this is another tough round. You could score this fight close either way.

Honestly, I think Dawson took this round, and I have a draw.

10 bell salute for Art Aragorn
I'm not trying to be insensitive or anything, and the 10-bell is well deserved of course, but is it really "tragic" when someone passes away at the age of 80? The man had a great life.

Cintron-Margarito R1
By sponsor, this is Rum v. Tecate.

Crowd is very much for Cintron. Margarito seems to be loving it.

Cintron comes out with a right, and sticks a jab in moments later. Looping right from Margarito, but he gets caught with a counter shot instead of landing that with any authority.

Cintron with a left hook that glances, and Margarito eats a vicious uppercut, throwing a hard right directly back. Cintron throws two bombs that don't get home. Margarito with a jab. Cintron and Margarito both look really relaxed.

Right over the top from Tony, and Kermit takes a jab and a body shot. Margarito definitely doesn't look like he's going to start slow. Margarito lunges with an uppercut, but Kermit stays back and throws short, purposeful punches.

Right from Cintron! And another! That caught Margarito. Margarito with a wicked right, and a left hook inside. Good first round, and I favor Cintron for landing better punches.

Cintron 10-9

re:
Cintron just belched like a motherfucker. That's rare.

Cintron-Margarito R2
Kermit is moving back, trying to establish a jab, and now he comes in with uppercuts and a wild left hook that Tony blocks. They tie up but break themselves up.

Cintron with a jab that lands, right is blocked by Margarito's glove. Margarito comes in, and he's throwing punches now. Right to the body, uppercut, and another uppercut. Kermit's defense is definitely better than it used to be.

Two HARD uppercuts land, shots to the body land, and Kermit is getting beaten up on the inside. Left from Margarito, Cintron is ducking down a lot and getting hit with good body shots.

Yup -- Tony's taking over on Cintron. Uppercuts landing, hooks to the body are landing. Margarito just looks like the better fighter right now. He won't stop throwing punches. But Kermit is hanging in there for now.

Cintron is getting POUNDED ON this round. HUGE round for Antonio Margarito.

between-round warnings
Low blows and headbutts.

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 10:32 PM EDT   0 recs

Cintron-Margarito R3
Small cut over the left eye of Margarito, probably from a headbutt.

Long, hard punches from Cintron, and Margarito blocks them. Margarito pops him with a long right, and another. Shot to the body from Kermit. Right from Cintron, really nice shot there. Left hook is blocked by Margarito, and Cintron comes back with an uppercut.

Margarito going back to the body as Cintron is tagging him upstairs this round. Margarito pops Cintron with some close shots. This is a lot, lot more competitive than their first fight, as most expected it would be. Cintron is clearly a different fighter and one of Manny Steward's real prize pupils of the recent years. He's totally transformed.

Margarito warned for a shot to the back of the head, and Cintron nails him with a big right. Cintron stops to complain again, and gets hit again.

Margarito 10-9
Margarito 29-28

Good stuff again.

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 10:36 PM EDT   0 recs

Cintron-Margarito R4
You know, those shots t the back of the head are Cintron's own fault. He's done that all fight -- ducking down into those punches.

Hurrld has it 2-1 for Margarito, same as my card.

Margarito is attacking again, beating him up inside. Cintron with a left-right combo, and then another right hand lands. This is a tale of two styles, and a nice matchup.

Uppercut from Cintron, sort of lazily got between the gloves. Long shots from Margarito, Cintron barely escapes some knockout-type blows on those. Margarito goes to the body again, then comes back upstairs. Left from Margarito lands on the button. Cintron with an uppercut.

Margarito lands three shots as Cintron tries to duck and dodge. Tony Margarito is just plain winning this fight. Cintron's not fighting poorly, really, he just doesn't seem to have the right tool set to beat Margarito.

Margarito 39-37

I feel like I'm watching the Williams-Quintana
fight all over again.

One guy is doing a nice work rate and getting so many clean shots on the other guy that it doesn't matter what the other guy does because the clean shots are all the judges see.

Cintron seems like he has given up in the ring. He'll get knocked out in the sixth or seventh and I'll be mad.

yup
Cintron folded like a cheap tent in this fight. I don't like saying stuff like that about fighters, but it's obvious that as well-skilled as he looks against Walter Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano, he doesn't have the fortitude for a guy like Margarito.

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 10:49 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Cintron-Margarito R5
Trade of jabs to start the round. Nice, fast swinging right hand from Cintron, and he seems like he wants to really mix it up right now, try to catch and surprise Margarito. And then Margarito stuns him with a big right. And another!

Cintron blocks some left hooks, but Margarito is smothering him again, taking away the distance that is so key to Cintron's optimal power shots. Cintron is being hammered right now, and he's cut.

Cintron is complaining about punches to the back of the head again. What the fuck -- stop ducking down like that. Come on, ref. Warn Cintron, not Margarito.

Margarito goes right back to the assault and dominates the remainder of the round. Cintron looks like his spirit might be escaping him. He's getting his ass kicked.

Margarito 10-9
Margarito 49-46

Cintron-Margarito R6
Manny is begging Cintron to box Margarito. Margarito said he felt this fight, if he pressured Cintron, would start to go like the first one did, as Cintron would fold.

Cintron is begging the referee at various points. Merchant is all over it, and he's right. Cintron has stopped fighting back for the most part. This is getting ugly, and all of Cintron's whining is getting pretty sorry.

DOWN GOES CINTRON!

he's not getting up, that was a wicked shot.

It's over. Beautiful body shot. Goodnight, Kermit Cintron.

Cotto-Gomez R1
Oh boy, here we go with this one. Good luck, Gomez. You need it.

Cotto comes out throwing left hands right away, and boy, he looks like he wants to start fast in this one. Nice jabs, moving around, and lands a left hook. Gomez throws a right, mostly blocked. Body shot from Cotto.

The difference in speed is already magnificently apparent within a minute. Cotto doesn't look like he wants to mess around, throwing bigger shots than he usually does this early. Gomez is already reddening up.

Cotto is jabbing, landing really straight, hard shots, and swelling up Gomez's forehead. Cotto switches to southpaw, then goes right back. The jab is just dominant so far.

Easy first round for Cotto, and he wobbles Gomez with a left hook to the body just before the bell. Gomez was hurt, and Cotto stares him down right after the bell.

This is a huge mismatch.

Cotto 10-9

by SC on Apr 12, 2008 11:08 PM EDT   0 recs

Cotto-Gomez R2
Right to the body, guess who landed it? Poor Alfonso Gomez is decidedly out of his depth in this fight. I almost feel bad for him. God bless the guy, he's not running away from anything.

More hard shots from Cotto. Man, Gomez will just not back down. He's trying with everything he's got. He deserves credit for that. He knows what a chance this is.

Cotto with more good body shots. Manny calls it a "picnic" for Cotto right now. Lampley continues to try to sell us on this fight, while also noting the obvious: Cotto is acting like this is a sparring session.

Down goes Gomez. Gomez thought he slipped. Anyway, it goes on. That's a controversial knockdown, but it won't matter.

Gomez wobbled again. Cotto dominates another round.

You gotta score it 10-8 because the ringside judges don't have the benefit of replay showing no punch landing.

Cotto-Gomez R3
Big shots to the body from Cotto. And he switches southpaw, then goes back.

Gomez isn't landing fuck all. Uppercut snaps Gomez's head. Cotto absorbs a couple shots to land a few of his own. Neither of Gomez's shots made him so much as change his expression.

Right lands, left lands. Left lands on the bridge of the nose. He's switching stances for fun, it seems. And again, God bless Alfonso Gomez. He's trying as we knew he would. But he's getting destroyed.

And my cable blacks out. Bueller?

Bueller?

OK, back. I will assume nothing really changed, at least not enough to give Gomez the round.

And Gomez goes down on a left hook to the body. He's saved by the bell.

Lampley calls this "a full-scale annihilation so far."

Cotto 10-8
Cotto 30-25

Can this end? Come on.

How is Gomez getting up?
Heart can only take you so far, son. I feel like I'm watching Vitali Klitscho-Danny Williams. I was there in Vegas for that fight and after a while, you stopped caring who would win and started caring how much was enough before one man decided to stop getting up for the safety of himself.

Gomez is being tagged at will. For God's sake.

Gomez is hurt again with about a minute left. Really, what the fuck. Someone stop this. This is brutal. The guy won't back down. Someone throw a towel in or something. Jesus Christ.

The ring doctor is threatening to stop it, saying Gomez has to show something this round. Thank God.

This is like a reversal of Gomez-Gatti. Cotto is actually slowing down this round. It's like he doesn't want to hurt him, and knows that's what is on the table right now.

Down goes Gomez again. Stop this thing.

He gets up and he wants to keep fighting. Neumann will let him. Come ON. Are you serious? It was a fucking jab that put him down.

No good can come of letting this fight continue. Only bad. It's beyond obvious what's going on.
