Gamboa faces toughest test, Mijares tops Munoz

Yuriorkis Gamboa faced the stiffest test of the night, surprising most everyone. After a first round TKO by James Kirkland over Eromosele Albert and a fifth round TKO of Richar Gutierrez by Alfredo Angulo, Gamboa took a hard-fought unanimous, ten-round decision over Darling Jimenez. We'll have much more on the fights, plus the other weekend bouts on Sunday night.

Other quick results: Cristian Mijares won a split decision over Alexander Munoz to unify the WBC and WBA super flyweight titles, and Jorge Arce won a majority decision over David Lookmahanak to win an eliminator for that very same WBC title. The night's only real upset saw Omar Salado suffer his first defeat via fifth round TKO against Julio Cesar Miranda.

Whats that smell?

A like this Gamboa kid. What I dont like is fighters that drop their hands. I don’t know if it’s that he felt comfortable or what, but the Darling is not a big puncher and was able to knock him down later in a round. I smell a lose in the near future if it continues. It may seem like some of the familiar faces where they climb the ladder then at 21-0 or 23-0 it turns into 21-1 or 23-1. Or not even maybe it will be at a much earlier fight. I understand he has a strong Amateur background, however there is an extreme difference between that and Professional. It is the same as college and the real world.

dropping hands

I think he has the hand speed to do this offensively. But he does not have the head and upper body movement of Roy Jones in his prime, for instance, to get away with it defensively. A hard puncher could tag the hell out of him.

But offensively he is just unreal.

re:

Yeah, I noticed that. The Darling’s punch seemed like it was a slight punch to the upper body looked like it just took his breathe away.
