Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Edner Cherry v. Stevie Johnston

Edner Cherry v. Stevie Johnston (ESPN2)

I'm not feeling great and not going out as I usually do on Wednesday, plus I can't stomach listening to the YES broadcast of the O's-Yankees game, PLUS I like both Cherry and Johnston, so here's a short-notice BLH Fight Night for tonight's Wednesday Night Fights, which starts in just moments -- EDIT: this has been pushed back to a 10pm start time on ESPN2, or you can watch on ESPN360. Given that I mostly just care about the main event, I'll wait until ESPN2 gets it on.

Edwards

Just caught the edwards fight. Any one saw it. This guy knocked the other boxer out with a soft jab, it was to the temple, so it was somewhat strong. The guy went down like a sack of potatoes. He was out for like 5 mins. That was some KO

by CRAZEDANG1280 on May 21, 2008 9:43 PM EDT   0 recs

missed it

We’ve still got the Man Utd/Chelsea stuff on ESPN2. Too bad for Freddie Norwood, I guess, though I was never a fan.

by SC on May 21, 2008 9:58 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

well great

They’re still going to show the Norwood-Edwards fight on TV. No spoilers for the Cherry-Johnston fight, y’all.

Stupid “foot ball.” That was a hell of a match, though.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:01 PM EDT   0 recs

not gonna score Edwards-Norwood

since I know the result and all. And I’m kind of glad I don’t have to pay great attention to Norwood.

I am going to watch it to see what he has left (which I assume is nothing) and to see how Edwards does.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:05 PM EDT   0 recs

actually a fairly entertaining fight

These two clearly have some bad blood from their first fight, and that’s making it more than it really is.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:16 PM EDT   0 recs

third round knockdown

Norwood really has nothing left. I fear this is essentially what we’ll see with Stevie tonight, too. I love “Lil’ But Bad” but he is coming into this fight with me thinking he should hang up the gloves.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:17 PM EDT   0 recs

and then Freddie comes back in the fourth

This is really a pretty damn fun fight. Now I wish I HADN’T known the result. Good entertainment, and a great crowd at Camp Lejeune.

Taken out of context

Cherry and Johnston if this isn’t a porno movie I don’t know what is.

by CRAZEDANG1280 on May 21, 2008 10:23 PM EDT   0 recs

haha

Don’t spoil anything, dude. We’re still on Norwood-Edwards sixth round.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

man

Soft jab my ass. That was a hell of a good shot and a great KO.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:35 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah

Right on the temple. Tough shot to take.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It was soft one earlier but then about an 30 mins later they showed another view, it was more detailed and yes it was much stronger.

by CRAZEDANG1280 on May 21, 2008 10:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

side note

I hope someone yelled at Edwards for that post-fight backflip. What a dumb thing to do for a guy wearing a knee brace.

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:38 PM EDT   0 recs

oh jeez

Arthur Williams? 43-year old Arthur Williams? For real?

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:40 PM EDT   0 recs

Williams-Moore R1

Opponent is Clarence Moore, a knockaround guy (5-3-1 coming in). Six-rounder.

First half of the first round is awful. Williams looks his age, bad on his feet, slow hands. Moore doesn’t look any better, really. I don’t know why Teddy is really trying to analyze this matchup and what it means for either man. This is TV filler and nothing moore.

How do you even score that? I guess King Arthur pushed the action?

Williams 10-9

by SC on May 21, 2008 10:45 PM EDT   0 recs

Williams-Moore R2

Williams is sticking Moore but there is nothing on his shots. He’s not getting them in at the angles he’d like to, not able to sit down on anything. It’s sad sometimes to watch a 43-year old guy have to fight in a bout like this. Arthur Williams deserves plenty of respect for his career, which was really solid, but this is a man fighting on well past his expiration date. It’s been that way for years.

Down goes Clarence Moore, which doesn’t change my mind at all. Moore is hardly a fighter at all. Williams puts the heat back on once Moore is up, just jumping around and throwing bombs. Jumping, lunging left hook knocks Moore into the ropes, and it’s counted as a knockdown. Round ends during the count, and he’ll fight on. God knows why.

Williams 10-7
Williams 20-16

Williams-Moore R3

Moore looks out on his feet at the opening bell of the round. This fight is rather preposterous.

Joe and Teddy keep talking about Moore being 10 years younger. With all of nine pro fights. So what does that really mean? At no point in his life has Moore been as good of a fighter as Williams is now, and Williams is an old man.

Moore gets Williams against the ropes and tries to work the body, but he mostly got elbows there.

You know, this is really shoddy, and fights like this are the reason ESPN’s boxing coverage doesn’t draw any attention. ESPN has Monday Night Football, the NBA playoffs, a weekly high-profile baseball game, and they show fights like this.

Williams 10-9
Williams 30-25

Williams-Moore R4

To expand on what I was talking about last round, what purpose does this fight serve? Why is it on television? There are a BILLION other fights that could be made and put on TV. Prospects that have less than ten fights, veteran action guys that would love to be on TV, etc. I’m watching a washed-up former champion who absolutely looks 43 years old knock around a bum with absolutely no future, or even a past or present. I know a lot of it is money and politics and stuff, but there’s nobody that wants to see this fight! Don’t show a third fight, just go with Norwood-Edwards and Cherry-Johnston. The first fight was pretty good, had the crowd amped up, and now we have this atmosphere-ruining turd. There is a lot to be said for the structure and flow of a boxing card. Whether live or on TV, having good fights to lead into the main event is always an excellent idea. It’s never a guarantee, but you could have been 98% sure this fight would be a stinker.

Only reason I kept watching was for the quick cut to the bikini girls by the ring side

Williams-Moore R5

Here’s the fight: Williams circles around, keeps his range effectively, and occasionally Moore gets a bug up his ass and tries to attack, but he’s too slow afoot and with his hands that he can’t land anything of note. Williams lands a few along the way and easily wins the rounds.

Underestimate

I underestimated the Cherry-Johnston fight everyone whos watching it is in for a real treat. I didn’t think it was going to be that good.

by CRAZEDANG1280 on May 21, 2008 11:07 PM EDT   0 recs

Williams-Moore scores

60-52 on all three cards for King Arthur

Teddy had it 59-54 apparently not noticing the second knockdown in the second round.

Cherry-Johnston R1

Cherry bulls Johnston into the corner, basically hugging him all the way into it. Both guys popping out quick jabs, not landing, then clinching up. Johnston with a straight left, Cherry quickly counters.

Rough fight so far, lots of tying up and in-clinch shots. Hard first round to score, not a lot of clean action, but definitely plenty of clinching. Johnson’s left hand might’ve been the best shot of the round—I dunno.

Johnston 10-9

by SC on May 21, 2008 11:25 PM EDT   0 recs

Cherry-Johnston R2

Holy shit, some gal was going f’n nuts in the crowd.

A minute into this round and we’re still not seeing either guy landing anything, and when it gets in close, the tie up and the referee goes, “Stop, stop, stop!” I guess you can say something nice about the defensive abilities shown by both guys. With little action to call, Teddy is just using this time to talk about Stevie Johnston retiring.

Clash of heads seems to hurt Stevie a lot more than Edner. Another round that is really hard to score since nothing really came about. They’re moving around fast, but the action is hard to find.

Cherry 10-9
19-19

by SC on May 21, 2008 11:29 PM EDT   0 recs

Cherry-Johnston R3

Punch track shows Cherry throwing a ton more, and then all of a sudden, Stevie is down on an accumulation of punches/some off-balance issues, it appeared. Came really fast. Stevie gets knocked down so much these days, but the little son of a gun always gets up.

Cherry slips in the corner, a result of some ice and water issues from previous fights. I think this fight feels like it might turn up a notch, but we’re 20 seconds from the end of the third and there’s been a lot of throwing and not much connecting from Cherry, and little throwing and little connecting from Stevie.

Cherry gets the two-point swing.

Cherry 10-8
Cherry 29-28

Cherry-Johnston R4

Replay of the knockdown shows it was delayed, a right hand that staggered him and as he tried to duck a follow-up, his legs went out from under him.

The referee was a lead stuntman in the Die Hard movies—I’m a big fan now.

Johnston is moving forward now, and backs Cherry into the ropes, barely missing a big left hand. Johnston has a cut above his right eye.

Nice trade in the center of the ring, short, sharp punches from both guys, Cherry winning the exchange with a quick little right hand counter. Stevie said before the fight he wanted to work off the jab but he’s failed to do so yet. Cherry with a nice shot to the body. Good counter left from Stevie, and they’re starting to land some shots now. Best round of the fight.

Cherry 39-36

Cherry-Johnston R5

Long range right hand lands and hurts Stevie, who gets backed against the ropes, and all he can do is scrap and hang on. And he manages to do just that.

Cherry is a step or two faster than Stevie, who doesn’t really look bad, but outside of pummeling loss to Vivian Harris, he’s never really looked BAD. He’s got to find a way to win some rounds if he wants to keep on fighting on TV in anything at all noteworthy. Cherry has taken this over pretty easily. Johnston just can’t hurt Edner, and is no longer fast enough to outland his opponents.

Cherry 10-9
Cherry 49-45

by SC on May 21, 2008 11:43 PM EDT   0 recs

Cherry-Johnston R6

First half of the round is all Cherry again, as he’s starting to pot shot Stevie as he tries to come in. Stevie is just not using the jab at all, trying to land power shots—power shots being a bit of a farce when it comes to Stevie Johnston, who has never been a puncher.

Vicious right from Cherry, and Johnston probably shouldn’t have stayed up on that one. The guy still has guts and a chin, even as much as he goes down. Another big right just barely misses.

Cherry 10-9
Cherry 59-54

Cherry-Johnston R7

Just for Men has the weirdest fucking commercials. And that Gillette body wash commercial where the dude turns blue and then not only succeeds at Business Meeting but also might get laid is just as bad.

This is an OK fight, but it doesn’t seem like Cherry is doing everything he could possibly do to win the fight. He’s winning it pretty handily, but I really think he could put Stevie away watching Stevie tonight.

Joe talking about Cherry’s loss to Malignaggi, and thankfully Teddy tells the truth: Paulie’s just a lot better than Cherry and the style made for a nightmare night for Edner.

Another Cherry round, similar to the rest of the fight.

Cherry 69-63

by SC on May 21, 2008 11:52 PM EDT   0 recs

Cherry-Johnston R8

Johnston with a couple decent shots that back Cherry down. Teddy has it 70-63 for Edner with an even fifth round. Teddy loves them 10-10 rounds.

Stevie with a straight left, lands it, and right now he’s winning the round. Inside fighting from both, little stay busy shots on both sides land, neither guy goes to the body. Neither guy has done much of anything with the jab. Who would’ve thought the Freddie Norwood fight would be the night’s best?

Johnston 10-9
Cherry 78-73

by SC on May 21, 2008 11:56 PM EDT   0 recs

Cherry-Johnston R9

Two minutes into the round we see that Cherry has landed 17 jabs, Johnston 29. That’s pretty awful.

Three-punch combo by Cherry, and he goes for the kill—Johnston is down and that really should be it, but the tough bastard gets up again. He’s just been through too many tough fights.

Johnston hurt again, and he backs into the ropes and hangs on. He’ll make it into the 10th and final round.

Cherry 10-8
Cherry 88-81

Cherry-Johnston R10

Johnston isn’t at the point where I think he HAS to retire, but he’s clearly at the point that he can’t beat someone as good as even Edner Cherry, who is a fine fighter but nothing terribly special. He’s a fringe contender. Stevie just doesn’t have the legs or the punch or even the technique anymore.

Big right with about 30 seconds left, and Johnston goes down in brutal fashion. He’s hurt and they need to get in there. It’s over.

Edner Cherry KO-10

by SC on May 22, 2008 12:05 AM EDT   0 recs

nevermind

It really is time for him to retire. Eventually he’s going to get hurt.
