Hearns-Gonzalez R1

Gonzalez is popping Hearns right away, pushing him and testing his mettle straight off. Hearns with an uppercut that misses, then a nice popping jab that follows. Roundhouse straight right from Gonzalez, body shot from Hearns. Hearns is getting hit a lot over a very fast-paced first minute, but he’s landing some nice stuff, too.

This is a hell of a start, two guys just winging. Gonzalez is started to get nailed on the inside, not working once in there and getting hit. Long double jab/hook combo from Hearns. Hearns wants to hit a long right, but he hasn’t found a home for it just yet. Gonzalez with some big shots that rock Ronald near the ropes. Once there’s distance, Hearns is clearly faster-handed. 1-2 from Hearns, right hand lands nicely. Uppercut lands. Fun first round, both guys did good work and were sloppy but quite entertaining.

Hearns-Gonzalez R2

They star fast again, with Hearns working off his jab. Gonzalez is throwing heavy leather, and now he’s going southpaw. Very briefly. That looked awful.

Hard body combination from Hearns. Hearns hit with a right, and lands a wicked uppercut on the inside. Ronald’s not looking like taking shots is bothering him, and he’s certainly taken a few.

Vicious right counters a nice left from Gonzalez. Popping jab from Hearns. Body shot from Gonzalez. Hearns comes with long rights. Another fun round. These guys might tire quickly, partiuclarly Gonzalez.

Hearns-Gonzalez R3

Gonzalez with more body work, and Hearns fires right back. These guys are just brawling. There has not been a single pretty defensive moment of the first two rounds and change. Hearns really wants the uppercut, but it’s only landed a couple times. Gonzalez so far has been a sucker for the jab-right combo.

Hearns tags him a few times. Hearns digs a body shot in during a clinch. Hearns is throwing a ton and missing, but he’s seemingly taken momentum this round. Gonzalez’s activity has decreased greatly. Gonzalez lands a right. Another entertaining round, punctuated by a big right from Gonzalez and an answer from Hearns.

Hearns-Gonzalez R4

They come out throwing AGAIN. Gonzalez came to fight, and Hearns is standing right there with him. Low blow, and a big one from Gonzalez.

Hearns will take a moment.

Gonzalez takes a right to corner Hearns and fire. These two are BRAWLING. Holy FUCK! Holy FUCKING SHIT! Good LORD this is a fight! Those two just fought with some real fury. This is a war right now.

Who could have expected this fight to be so exciting? These two are throwing and taking punches like crazy.

Hearns is unloading at center ring, but not landing much. Massive left hook from Gonzalez barely misses. These two have to be getting exhausted.

Hearns-Gonzalez R5

Hearns backs Gonzalez down with measured right hands, but Gonzalez shows his spirit again by eating shots to come in at him. And there’s a borderline low shot from Hearns.

Quick left hook from Hearns just plain hits Gonzalez in the face. Gonzalez with another right hand. Gonzalez is a tough son of a bitch.

Hearns is winning this round again by simply landing a lot more than Gonzalez is. Gonzalez is making this fun, but he’s also losing the fight with bouts of inactivity. Ronald hasn’t stopped working for very long at any point. Gonzalez is starting to look pretty gassed.

Hearns-Gonzalez R6

Gonzalez throws again, and Hearns is just beating him up. This is either speaking massively for Gonzalez’s chin or Hearns’ lack of real power. Hearns is holding his left really low and just inviting Gonzalez to come at him. He knows he can counter him well.

Nice right from Hearns. Hearns hits him with another pretty right hand moments later. Hearns is just doing work on Gonzalez now. Gonzalez has nothing left but grit. Stiff right hand from Hearns.

Hearns with a right to the body, great round for him. Horrible round for Gonzalez.

Hearns-Gonzalez R7

After round four, Hearns thought his nose was broken. They’d mentioned that earlier, but that clip clearly tells you the story. Doesn’t seem like it’s broken, though. There’s been no sign of blood.

Gonzalez is spent. This is sparring for Hearns now, as he’s waiting for Gonzalez to make moves and then hitting him as a penalty. Hearns has slowed down, more his pace. He’s being allowed to do so. Left and a right from Gonzalez, Hearns hits him with a counter. Hearns DRILLS him with a right hand.

Gonzalez’s corner calls the fight off moments later.

Ward-Ravelo R1

Ward storms out and misses right away, and Ravelo catches him off balance about 20 seconds in with a big shot. Ward stumbles, and Ravelo does not follow up at all. He just stands there. What the hell is that? Chase the guy that’s stumbling sideways and has no guard up.

Ward gets his composure back. Nice jab from Ward, and he dances away from a counter. Ward with a double jab. Right from Ward. Ward, as always, shows a great sense of ring presence. He always knows exactly where he is.

Fight slows down after the shaky start, and it turns into the Andre Ward boxing show by my count.

Ward-Ravelo R2

Ravelo with a right, one shot in among Ward’s many. Ward is trying to lunge in fast, and nothing good is coming of that. His jab has been sharp when he’s used it. Just work the jab, yo!

Ravelo is making Ward miss on those fast charges, but Ward winds up out of position for anything big to come back at him. Ravelo slips trying to come inside on Ward. Ward just makes him look silly on a slip.

Ward-Ravelo R3

Ward keeps rushing in, and I just don’t like that strategy for him. He’s dancing well, but not landing a whole lot, and really nothing substantial. The good thing is he’s not allowed Ravelo to get any momentum whatsoever. Ravelo is landing big shots, but they’re very sporadic.

Ward is simply doing his thing. He’s outboxing Ravelo clearly.

Ward-Ravelo R4

Popping jab to the body from Ward, and the first minute of the round is more of him doing good work. Big right from Ravelo, Ward slips it and hits him with a looping counter left over the top.

Ward’s hand speed is superb, and he has the fundamentals down. Whether or not he becomes a superstar depends simply on what he can do offensively when someone eventually really presses him, and how his power holds up over the advances in level.

I don’t get why he’s not jabbing more, because he could do so at will if he wished.

Ward-Ravelo R5

As Ravelo tries to clinch Ward, Andre simply pushes up toward Ravelo’s chest and digs to the body with three shots. Ward is landing here, landing there, scoring a lot of points, doing his thing, and doing it with ease and confidence. Ravelo hasn’t once had any real momentum going for him.

Ward switches southpaw and pops him with a wild left hand, then follows up with a straight left from distance. Ravelo looks lost. He’s got no ability to punch first or beat Ward to the punch, and just seems like he doesn’t know what to do with Ward.

Big one-two from Ward just before the bell, and Ravelo winds up sitting on the middle rope as he ducks a punch at the bell.

Ward-Ravelo R6

At this point, this fight isn’t even close. The first round was as close as it got, and I thought Ward had taken the fight over by the last minute of that one, anyway.

Ward with a right, Ravelo backs down again. Ward hits him with lefts over and over in the second minute of the fight, and Ravelo has lost all will to fight back. Ward is dominating, and it looks like Ravelo is tiring and becoming completely beaten. I don’t know how much more he has left in him, and that goes for body, heart and mind.

Ravelo is just shoving and holding now, not really fighting back. Ward dominates another round.

Ward-Ravelo R7

Ward storms him in the first 30 seconds again, and Ravelo just tries to cover up and get away. He’s not fighting first, not fighting second, just getting soundly defeated.

Right hand from Ward. I kind of want Ravelo’s corner to throw in the towel just to get this over with. The outcome is obvious.

Ward punches him repeatedly, and Ravelo leans over the top of the ropes to get it restarted.

Ward hits him again, this time Ravelo, in an attempt to hang on and stop the train, winds up laying down. This is getting pretty pathetic to watch, really. Ravelo isn’t fighting, has no intention of fighting, and is just getting killed without it getting too exciting.

Ward-Ravelo R8

What the hell—they stopped the fight briefly for something and then something went flying out of the ring. Was that a mouthpiece?

Ward clocks Ravelo again, and now he’s just beating the hell out of him. Ravelo leans out of the ring again. Come on, Smoger, just call this off. This is like Latimore-Powell from the other night. It’s one guy punching and the other guy doing nothing back.

Ward unloads with rights and lefts again. Smoger should really get in there. If Ravelo’s corner isn’t going to help him, the referee should. This isn’t close and the outcome is not in doubt. The only thing that can happen is Ravelo gets hurt needlessly.

Ravelo again leans out of the ring.

There he goes—Ravelo’s down, and Smoger’s giving him a count. Jesus.

He looks terrible. And of course Smoger lets it go.

Ward swarms and mauls him in the corner. Smoger stands there while the towel flies in over him, and lets Ward throw a bunch of punches until stepping in there.
