Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Pavlik-Lockett, Quintana-Williams II, Ponce de Leon-Lopez
Big night! Two of these fights are tough to pick and should have some good action. The "main event" in the BLH universe (fight that comes last, which is Pavlik-Lockett) at least has a must-see fighter in Pavlik.
The schedule:
9:00 ET, Showtime: Quintana-Williams II
10:05 ET, HBO: Ponce de Leon-Lopez and Pavlik-Lockett
We will not be covering the Showtime main event of Forrest-Mora live. We'll go from the Showtime opener over to the HBO card at 10:05. Join us for a tripleheader of championship boxing!

Quintana-Williams R1
Williams popping the jab out there, Quintana gets a left to the body, and a right hook from Williams finds its home. Right hand response from Quintana. Nice overhand left from Quintana, but he gets caught with a shot or two in counter. Sharp straight left from Williams, and Carlos ties him up. Quintana is getting TAGGED, and he’s DOWN!
That might be it? He’s shaken up badly. Williams just beat the hell out of him.
He’ll fight on, but that was pretty serious business. Williams DRILLS HIM AGAIN WITH A LONG LEFT HAND! Quintana is getting SLAUGHTERED! Another left lands! Quintana down again, THE FIGHT IS OVER!
Holy shit! Paul Williams just DESTROYED Carlos Quintana. DESTROYED him.

Williams
Glad to see him get revenge. He’s been one of the fighters I’ve enjoyed watching of late. His match against Margarito was great and I was shocked to see him lose last time out. I think he’d lose to Cotto but an Oscar fight would be winable.

Forrest-Mora R1
Got about 20 minutes until the HBO card goes live, but Ponce-Lopez might not start until 10:20 or so. Maybe we’ll get all of this in.
Mora’s first offensive move is a feint with no follow-up. And he pulls a couple more out. His ring movement is definitely unique, I’ll give him that. Very herky-jerky and weird.
Mora trying to jab to the body, Forrest seems like he’s just trying to get his timing, and then he does and tags him with a right. Another overhand right misses. Mora says if he wins tonight he’ll immediately vacate and go back to middleweight. I wonder why people have no respect for Mora? Does he hear the shit he says?
Mora wants to fight from a distance, and really that’s just making nothing happening. Major boos already with a minute left in the roung. Mora walks into a jab. Wicked body shot and a vicious right to the jaw by Forrest. Another right misses. Right and a left from Forrest upstairs, and he took that ring. They talk at the bell, smiling, and the crowd isn’t thrilled.

Forrest-Mora R2
McGirt to Forrest: “To hell with the nice guy shit.”
Mora lunges with a wild left hook, but it doesn’t land clean. Mora continues to stay away, try to jump in with jabs and feints, and nothing’s really working for him yet. There’s a little combo from Mora.
Chopping right to the side of the head from Vernon. Uppercut lands, and a beauty. Mora looks around and shakes his head. Whenever Forrest feels like he has an opening, he’s popping Mora at will. Mora with a left hook. Hard shot from Forrest, and another one. And another one.

Forrest-Mora R3
About a minute into this round, and the boos come back again.
30 seconds later, more booing.
Not a whole lot going on. Forrest occasionally lands another decent shot, Mora tries to do some feinting and jabbing. Still. They told him to work the right to the body this round, he’s largely failed. Hard left hook to the body from Forrest. Both fighters warned to stop hitting behind the head.

Forrest-Mora R4
Mora’s landing more this round, moving a lot and scoring with some good potshots. Two rights from Forrest. Mora with a left hook answer. This has been by far his best round. Nice hooks and body shots. There’s a hook to the chest by Mora. Quick jab from Forrest. Mora’s 11 fans chant his name.
If Vernon would press this guy, he’d take him out. Mora takes the last 30 seconds to take a leisurely stroll around the ring.
Mora 10-9

Never Doubt the Latin Snake!
How could you question the tactics of Sergio Mora? Outrageous! Mora is one of the greatest boxers in the entire history of The Contender, that’s a fact. He’s blistering speed and incredible footwork put him in a class that includes only The Greatest. Watch in awe SC, watch in awe.

Forrest-Mora R5
Getting close to abandoning this fight with HBO starting in five minutes.
First thing to happen this round is a clinch.
Albert: “Some rough house tactics, and Flaherty trying to nip it in the butt.”
Bud, Steve. Bud.
Forrest lands some good stuff, but then Mora comes back with a really sharp jab and some digging stuff inside. The last 40 seconds will decide this round. And in the last 40 seconds they both stand around, with Vernon trying to land a couple jabs.

Forrest-Mora R6
Alright, one more round of this for me, I think. I hope. I PRAY. Do me a favor, Vernon.
Forrest with a jab and some slappy rights. Mora goes to the body, just above being low. I do like Sergio’s defensive skills, I’ll give him that. He’s very good defensively. If he had any offensive skills - not KO power, even, since Paulie Malignaggi is a similar fighter that, you know, fights - he’d be perfectly fine to watch.
Oh shit, Mora just POPPED Vernon, and he’s all over him. Holy crap. Mora is firing at Vernon, who ties up. This is turning into a pretty physical fight on the inside. And Mora is doing better than I thought he would. Actually, let’s amend that. Forrest is doing a lot worse than I expected. Forrest is looking tired.

Forrest-Mora R7
I’ll give this another round. Forrest is looking winded. Mora might just outlast Forrest. Which would be more on Vernon than anything. All the press row scores are the same as mine.
Mora is just outboxing Vernon right now. The momentum has definitely gone over to his side. Mora warned again for hitting behind the head, for about the umpteenth time.
Forrest with some fireworks, Mora shakes his head, which he’s done several times after getting punched in the mouth. Forrest starting to fight back a little now, trying to establish the jab. But this was another Mora round.
These guys are staring each other down like this is some exciting dogfight.

Big shot from Forrest, a straight right off the jab. Clash of heads, Vernon complains of an intentional butt. The jab-right works again. Enough to get you to want to watch Kelly Pavlik, huh?
Forrest to the body, Mora with a jab up top. Low blow from Vernon. They get broken out of a clinch, and as Flaherty addresses Forrest, Mora tries to shove Flaherty out of the way.
This is my last minute of Forrest-Mora. Thank God, frankly. More Flaherty yelling at these two. Mora warned again for rabbit punching. Flaherty’s been a sweetheart toward Mora’s behavior.

Ponce de Leon-Lopez R1
Ponce is PUMPED UP. Swingin’ his arms around. Ready to rumble.
Long left might have sneaked through the gloves by Ponce, and he hits borderline low. Center ring trade. Nice counter right by Lopez. Left to the body by Lopez. Nice jab by Lopez, and WHOA!
Down goes Ponce de Leon! His legs look shot. He’s shaken up. This won’t last.
Lopez is swarming, chasing Ponce around the ring. Daniel’s just trying to survive and get his legs back under him. BEAUTIFUL HOOKS BY LOPEZ! Ponce de Leon down again. He’s done. He’s absolutely finished.

Pavlik-Lockett R1
Kellerman: “Can Pavlik do something that exceeds expectations?” Maybe if he literally knocks Lockett’s head off.
Nice right from Lockett. Jab to the body by Lockett. Combo upstairs from Pavlik. Sharp jab from Pavlik. Lockett misses a big left hook. 1-2 by Pavlik. The straight right falls short. Another nice right from Lockett, but the left hook is blocked. Vicious right hand hurts Lockett, but Gary stays calm, doesn’t panic. This is going to be fun as long as it’s going.
Right hand from Lockett, and again the left hook is picked off. The trademark Pavlik jab-straight right connects. Good action in this first round, with Lockett hitting some good power stuff and Pavlik landing like usual.
Pavlik 10-9, but it was close

1st title defense?
They refer to this as Pavlik’s first middleweight title defense. However, wasn’t the rematch with Taylor his first defense or does that initial rematch not count as a “defense?” Just seems odd to me.

Pavlik-Lockett R2
Well, Gary Lockett’s already had a better night than Carlos Quintana and Daniel Ponce de Leon.
Pavlik starting to pick Lockett’s punches off fairly easily, and he lands the long right, his bread and butter. Nice combo ending with a left hook to the body by Kelly. He’s looking really crafty. Hard right to the body by Pavlik. This is starting to get one-sided in the opening minute of the second round.
Pavlik is just shutting Lockett’s advances the hell down, and landing good shots. Lockett takes a knee after a series of hard, clean punches. Up at 8. This won’t last long. Lockett looks finished.
Pavlik is beating the crap out of Lockett now. This is a massive mismatch. Brutal body shot by Kelly. Stiff jab from Lockett. But Pavlik just comes back with combos and horrible shots to the breadbasket. Lockett’s nose is bloodied.
Long straight right, Lockett takes another knee. He’s getting killed. Just stay down, Gary. Up at 8 again.
Lockett is being pummeled.

Pavlik-Lockett R3
This can’t go much further than it has. Lockett is clearly well out of his depth. This is Kelly Pavlik, World’s Middleweight Champion, against a club fighter. And this exhibits how God awful ridiculous this mandatory really is.
A left hook from Lockett sneaks a little bit past Pavlik’s glove. Lockett, God bless him, is trying. He’s got a lot of balls. Lockett lands, but Pavlik lands back, and harder. Every punch in the book is landing for Pavlik.
Lockett takes another knee. Just stop it, man. Don’t fight on. Enzo Calzaghe throws in the towel.
I love Kelly Pavlik. This was a great performance. But this fight was a joke.
