Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Hasim Rahman v. James Toney II

Hasim Rahman v. James Toney II (FSN)

The show starts live at 11pm ET on FOX Sports Net. God help us all. This sucked two years ago, and neither guy has exactly been lighting up the world since then. But again, I stick by one of my chief rules of boxing fandom. To love the great fights, you gotta watch the bad ones.

That and I'm thinking these two aging, increasingly desperate guys might just come out and throw down in an attempt to impress. It's do or die for both.

You know....

ESPN2 has Delvin Rodriguez/Oscar Diaz at the same time….

I know

I can’t pass this POS up. It has no business being televised, but FOX thinks this is a marketable matchup. Instead of rallying against them, I’m going to have an informed opinion of why this sucked.

the usual god awful presentation

Bad video, bad sound, bad music, bad graphics. Fucking FSN is a joke.

hey great

The microphones keep going out on Chris Rose, John Salley and Chris Byrd in the analysis booth.

Chris Byrd says, “They have something left.” Wrong guy to ask. He thought he had something left, too.

hey, a bonus fight

Rico Ramos v. Jonathan Velardez, starting in round 3 (out of four). Great stuff. They have to get their mikes working.

This is, of course, just laughable. Velardez has the stupidest haircut in boxing.

Oh I dunno

Paulie Malignaggi might have something to say about that….

Paulie can’t hold a candle to this thing. He has cut a crown (of thorns??) into his hair.

weights for tonight

In case you missed it, like if you’re the sort of sane boxing fan that hasn’t paid much attention, Rahman came in at 244, with Toney an admittedly trim 226 and looking better than he has in a while.

Round 1

Rahman starting with the jab, Toney starting with his posturing. Toney bothered by a jab to the nose. Toney has done nothing at all offensivel through the first two minutes. I’ve pretty much described all the action. This is thrilling. Jab and a right from Rahman.

Body shot from Toney, Rahman comes back with a jab as Toney leisurely walks away. Ex ci ting opening round. Toney will lull you, alright. That’s on-point, broadcasters.

Rahman 10-9

Round 2

Toney comes out throwing short punches, none of them landing. They’re short because his arms aren’t very long, not because he’s especially trying to be accurate.

Rahman’s long jab is doing the job so far. Not in an entertaining manner, of course, but it is what it is. He’s backing Toney up at will. Toney’s daring Rahman to come inside because he can’t figure out how to work his way in. Counter right from Toney, they think it stung Rahman. It didn’t. There’s a right from Rahman. Right from Rahman follows a left.

Rahman 10-9

Round 3

Rahman with a left that pushes Toney back again. Toney’s gameplan seems to be the usual, trying to make Rahman make mistakes. Not happening so far.

These guys gave Toney round two, apparently for landing a single punch of any note.

Toney working inside now, and Rahman is mixing it up with him. Cut over the eye of Rahman, caused by a butt it seems. You know what Toney’s doing? Standing and waiting to throw an overhand right. That’s really it. They’re calling this like Toney is dominating, and NOW he starts landing some good stuff. Rahman seems to be a little bit staggered. That cut IS in a bad place.

Toney with a sneaky left that gets in there, and now Rahman unloads against the ropes, but the best punch landed comes from Toney. Good rebound round for James.

Toney 10-9
Rahman 29-28

FIGHT IS STOPPED DUE TO A CUT

This is superior horseshit. Toney thinks he won, but since it was from an accidental headbutt, that is not quite, you know, true.

Official Decision: No Decision!

What a story. Fuck you, guys. Yeah, let’s see them fight a third time. The nation clearly was on pins and needles.
