for the record

My digital cable has been awful lately, and I’m very concerned about the fight not coming though, and if it doesn’t, the reps are a pain in the ass about putting the signal through even though the show is clearly ordered. Anyway, IF THAT HAPPENS, rest assured we’ve got a feed of the fight and will be here with coverage.

picks

Cotto UD Margarito - I love Margarito’s chances, frankly, but I can’t bet against Cotto
Segura TKO-4 Canchila - Canchila has never fought anyone this good, or close to it
Alvarado UD Bazan - Bazan has a chance for an upset, I think
Concepcion TKO-7 Carrera - Bernabe might be slightly overhyped, but he’s good

Hopefully we can get some real conversation on here

it’s one of the biggest advantages of the new format – posts come up as you write them and you don’t have to refresh, so it works like a live chat, only evil.

Concepcion-Carrera R1

Concepcion has really big arms for a guy his weight. Feeling out process to start, with Concepcion staying at distance and Carrera looking for an opening cautiously. Nice jab from Concepcion, Carrera’s counter is a hair slow. Jab from Carrera. They’re just looking to establish jabs on both sides right now.

Concepcion’s defense looks good so far, as he’s getting his gloves up to pick off long shots from Carrera. Nice jab from Concepcion. There’s a hard right that doesn’t get home from Concepcion. Carrera worked the jab pretty well this round, and Concepcion just didn’t challenge him too much. It looks like he was just waiting to see what Carrera had, but still, Carrera takes a close round.

Concepcion-Carrera R2

CompuBox solidly disagrees with my first round score. I thought Carrera dictated where the fight went and with a round that didn’t see much landed, I give it to him. But it was close and I think it looks like Bernabe is preparing to strike.

Carrera’s shots don’t have a lot of pop, but he’s really the one pressing the action forward. Concepcion seems a little trigger-shy, and honestly we’re getting next to no action right now. There’s a sweet body shot-left hook combo from Concepcion, with a counter shot by Carrera after. Roach told Bernabe to go to the body and then the head, and there it was.

Now Carrera presses again. Concepcion really needs to work more than this. Carrera with a flurry, and there’s a shot from Concecpion, countered by Carrera.

Look, CompuBox might disagree again, but Concepcion just isn’t doing much of anything so far. When he lands, he looks good. He’s just not working.

Concepcion-Carrera R3

Hurrld has it 2-0 for Concepcion. He’s the better fighter. He’s landing more punches, but it’s not like all of them are meaningful. He’s just tentative.

Nice body shot from Concepcion, and he comes back with a windup right hand downstairs. OH, there’s a HARD right hand from Concepcion to the body that drops Carrera to a knee. Really pretty shot, very forceful.

Concepcion looks like he might’ve found what he was looking for. He’s bouncing around, throwing more, and there he tags Carrera with a hard left to the jaw. And Carrera goes down on a right uppercut!

Joe Cortez calls it off.

Alvarado-Bazan R1

Well, Alvarado comes out looking focused. Bazan sort of looks unsteady or something.

Well there’s a stiff uppercut from Bazan, so maybe I should shut the fuck up. These two are trading hard shots. Just firing power shots willy-nilly. Can’t ask for more than action.

Bazan digs to the body, and Alvarado charges at him moments later with a couple of shots.

Someone’s going to get fucking knocked out in this one.

Weak Undercard

Looks like the whole undercard was set up based on the Mexican vs. Pueto Rican rivalry. But that leaves the rest of us wishing for more familiar names.

by Matt Miller on Jul 26, 2008 9:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Alvarado-Bazan R2

Hurrld gave the round to Bazan. Me and Lederman are not on the same page.

Swiping left hook by Alvarado. Alvarado looking to work behind a jab, but Bazan fires a long right hand that grazes, leaning more toward miss than hit. These two are throwing leather. It’s not furious, but both are looking to score hurting blows.

Hard charge by Bazan, then he backs off again and keeps distance. Trade of body shots as parts of the crowd start to boo. Where the fuck are they sitting? Lampley starts trying to defend this undercard, calling Concepcion “highly telegenic”—I guess?

Manny says he’s been impressed by ALL the fights he’s seen tonight. Maybe he’s counting the untelevised undercard, but for those that don’t consider that, that sounds dumb.

Tight round again. And again I favor Alvardo, but barely. Again. Again!

Alvarado-Bazan R3

Bazan is the one throwing big shots now, as Alvarado seems a bit puzzled by this non-crumbling old man. There’s some work from Alvarado, but he’s just failing to impress, as he always has for me personally. I like his raw tools, but they’re very, very raw.

Now he’s pushing Bazan back, though, and it looks like Cesar is the one starting to lose his way. Hard body shots from Bazan, then he’s backed to the ropes again. Oh shit! Ripping shots from Bazan! They are FIRING NOW, BOYS! Stiff short shots from Alvarado end the round.

This is a fine little fight.

Alvarado-Bazan R4

Harold is theorizing that Bazan hurt his right hand.

I think Alvarado is starting to hurt and wear out the old pro. Bazan’s defense is slipping, his body language is changing. He’s not coming at Alvarado, and when hit he seems to back down quickly.

Alvarado is starting to take over, in short. Bazan is wearing down. Alvarado with a flurry of right hands at the ropes, and Bazan goes down. He’s done. He quickly took his mouthpiece off and just stayed on the mat.

Segura-Canchila R1

Segura quickly goes over to southpaw. Manny spreads love to Naseem Hamed immediately. And back to orthodox.

Canchila with a hard counter right as Segura misses badly. Wow, they are throwing. Segura hurts Canchila with a right. Another right from Canchila. Segura hammers away to the body, and Canchila looks a little overwhelmed already. Segura is throwing bombs, a little sloppy but I’ll take the entertainment. These guys came to knock someone the hell out.

Canchila throws wild shots, and Segura makes him miss, leading to Segura throwing more bombs of his own. “108 pound barroom brawl,” says Lampley, and he’s pretty spot-on.

Just windmilling their arms around.

Segura charges in. I’m not sure Canchila is as hurt as Segura thinks. What the fuck is Manny talking about? “With small guys! You’d expect this in a heavyweight bout with some big slow heavyweights.” What? What the fuck dope are you on?

Borderline low blow by Canchila. Round comes to a close with more wild, sloppy brawling.

Canchila with a quick combo, maybe his best looking stuff so far. Segura is so loopy. Canchila needs to heed Manny Steward’s advice and just walk Segura down. Nice body shot and a right upstairs by Canchila.

Great round for Canchila with about 20 seconds left. He’s been calm, calculated, and effective. He’s made Segura miss and kept him even more off-balance than he naturally is. I really like what Canchila did this round.

Canchila comes out with the same gameplan that worked for him in the third round. Segura just doesn’t look as confident as he did early on. There’s a nice 1-2 from Segura. Now Canchila is getting loopy with Giovanni again—dumb move. There he straightens up and lands like he can.

They’re trading again, but it’s not as frantic as it was earlier. Lampley points out that Segura fights in shorter shoes, and Manny has a fit about it. Ankle support!

Interesting round. Ugly, but interesting.

People simply do not care about these Wednesday Night Fights-level bouts. This probably wouldn’t even be a main event on WNF. Goddamn.

Lots of activity, Segura is doing a better job this round landing and getting Canchila uncomfortable. Both of them are starting to look tired, though, particularly Segura. OH! Borderline low blow by Canchila. That’s a second warning. He can’t afford to lose a point.

Canchila is making Segura look like an amateur right now—pretty much exactly what you would not expect given Canchila’s amateur non-existence and useless pro record.

Now Segura appears to hurt Canchila a bit. This has been a hell of a back-and-forth round. Fantastic stuff, the styles clashed perfectly there. I think Canchila is winning this fight.

Segura-Canchila R6

Yes, let’s keep showing Mike Tyson. Hooray convicted rapist!

Lederman has the same card I do. Now me and Hurrld got some synergy, yo.

I’ll also say this—this fight deserves more crowd reaction than it has received. It’s been a good one.

Canchila is really making Segura miss. Manny thinks Canchila has lost his rhythm, I don’t see it. I think he’s wearing Segura out and landing when he sees a chance. The two continue to rip into each other, and Segura is looking much worse as far as stamina and cardio goes. Canchila is working in a calm fashion, while Segura is trying to charge and stun, sort of like Vic Darchinyan in some ways.

Canchila has taken momentum and put it into his back pocket.

Segura-Canchila R7

Segura’s body language isn’t great. Or even good. He’s backing down, he’s being pressed, he’s being stalked down, and his punches have lost zip. Canchila is popping him with calculated shots and he is now the predator. This Canchila is very impressive tonight. He adjusted very well and is taking it to one of the world’s best 108-pounders.

The crowd is booing because Segura has just stopped fighting. He gets drilled by Canchila and clinches up. Segura is flat-out looking like a beaten man here in the seventh round. This now looks like domination. Segura is finished physically and mentally.

I don’t think we’re going to see this one last much longer.

Segura-Canchila R8

Canchila comes out fast and hard, and he stuns Segura with a right hand. Segura is desperate. The only thing he has left as a hope is a single big punch. Every minute of this fight makes it less and less close.

Well shut up again, me, because Segura just hurt Canchila. But that’s about all he had. Canchila goes to the body very wisely. God bless Giovanni Segura, he’s found an uppercut and is fighting with all he’s got left.

Canchila continues to stalk Segura, who’s trying to use feints and other bullshit to worry Canchila enough to stay off of him. Even with the flurry, Canchila is winning another round.

This is a hell of a fight. It’s a shame that they aren’t getting a bigger reaction from the crowd.

Segura-Canchila R9

Man, give it up for Giovanni Segura. He’s spent and he’s coming out to trade shots with Canchila, hoping to lure Canchila into a shootout as he did in the first two rounds. Canchila presses Segura into the ropes again. Segura’s right eye is closing up on him.

Quick right hand from Canchila. Canchila is bleeding from the mouth. Segura with a wild uppercut that misses. This is a fucking grueling fight—this is one of the best fights of the year. The longer it goes, the more guts Segura shows, the better this is.

Segura with a hard right to punctuate a strangely effective comeback round. So we’re making it to double digits this fight. A couple rounds ago you’d have never thought this was going to happen. Segura has taken a good beating.

Segura-Canchila R10

Bell sounds, they approach, and Segura lunges.

And here comes Canchila with a pummeling in the corner. Somehow Segura manages to clinch up and hang on, spinning his way out of the corner in the meantime. Canchila hurts him again, but Segura catches him with a right. Canchila looks like he smells blood for sure—he wants the KO. He’s working the body, and Segura somehow stays standing. Segura is showing now that not only can he be an offensive, awkward dynamo of a fighter, but he’s tougher than hell, too.

This is a heroic effort from Segura. Canchila is battering him, and he stays up, and occasionally lands something back. This is a war.

Segura-Canchila R11

This is really something to watch—Segura is just double tough. He’s being thoroughly taken apart, but Segura comes out as the “boxing fan’s star” tonight, I think. He’s going to lose, but watching him take this beating so valiantly sort of steals some of Canchila’s well-earned thunder.

Canchila is tired, too, but he’s still moving well.

Jay Nady was going to call time for an accidental headbutt when the bell rang. Canchila has a cut over his right eye from the butt, but there’s just the one round left.

A jab seems to hurt Segura. Quick flurry from Canchila. Segura badly needs the KO. Of course, it’s worth saying—you never goddamn know with the judges and an unknown fighter like Cesar Canchila. But if he doesn’t get knocked out and loses this fight, it’s highway robbery. He’s done a brilliant job and this is a great emerging performance.

Canchila continues to rain down little shots, keeping Segura from finding a Little Mac start button special.

Cotto is throwing so many different punches, but he can’t discourage Margarito. Tony with a body shot and two uppercuts, Cotto comes back with a three-punch combo. Margarito warned for a low blow. STIFF left hook by Cotto rocks Margarito!

Cotto-Margarito R4

Cotto is keeping this fight entirely on the perimeter. There is almost nothing happening in the center of the ring. Cotto paces the ropes, Margarito chases, and Miguel is beating him to the punch most times. Trade of uppercuts, looks like Cotto’s was better.

Two uppercuts from Margarito! Cotto is backed up and forced to fight like hell. When forced to trade straight up, Cotto is beating Margarito. Margarito, though, is uneffected. Doing his thing. Waiting for the chance to launch a serious attack.

Cotto is outboxing Margarito with relative ease, that’s the real difference. Cotto is a much more well-rounded boxer, but this is Tony Margarito. Will, chin, heart, guts, and resolve. Cotto gets backed into a corner and fights his way out consistently, because he overpowers.

Lovin’ it.

Cotto-Margarito R5

Hurrld has it 39-37 for Cotto.

Cotto with jabs off the bat, and starts moving toward the perimeter again. Tony’s got to find a way to slow Cotto’s movement. He just has to. Or else he’ll lose a great fight.

Here they go trading quickly, and Cotto comes out of it better. Cotto with an uppercut to back Margarito down.

Margarito pops Cotto, and now he seems to be finding his rhythm. It is a constant circle of motion, this fight. Around the ring, around the ring, punching all the way. No clinching, no breaks, no bullshit. Two guys fighting with gameplans and fighting hard.

Margarito is getting frustrated, too. Cotto has his number. NICE uppercut from Cotto. He is starting to dominate—NEVERMIND, A HARD RIGHT AND ANOTHER FROM MARGARITO! They finish the round with a trade!

This is outstanding boxing.

I'm a little concerned

with how much damage Cotto is taking to the body. Seems he’s a little slower in getting off the ropes now, and has less body movement.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Cotto-Margarito R6

Cotto is so good. The first minute of this round is really cementing a fact: he is a level above Margarito. Low blow by Margarito, no warning.

Cotto with two uppercuts, then backs down, moves, and re-sets himself. I wonder if someone would consider this “running.” It sort of IS, I guess. But it’s just so smart. This Mayweatherian with wicked power.

This is the best performance of Miguel Cotto’s career. Again. Every time he fights, he gets better. How sensational is this guy?

Margarito is doing all he can. Tony looks to land in the corner, lands little, and Cotto retreats, forcing Margarito to chase. Right from Cotto! HOOK from Cotto! And another!

Margarito is going to need a KO. He did do some work to the body that can add up, and Cotto is looking a little haggard in the corner.

Cotto 10-9
Cotto 60-54

This is so much closer than the score.

I’ve ever had one guy ahead 59-55 in after 6 rounds.

Cotto-Margarito R7

Jim gave the second and sixth to Margarito. I can definitely see it.

Trade a little in the center, and Margarito is doing a good job. HERE COMES TONY MARGARITO! He’s flurrying on Cotto and beating him up a little now. Cotto isn’t fighting back, trying to find a way away from Margarito. Cotto is getting TAGGED with hard shots.

Margarito is ALL OVER HIM! Cotto is badly hurt! Uppercuts have hurt him!

Cotto’s in trouble. Margarito is ALL OVER Cotto. ALL OVER HIM! Margarito on the ropes now, just throwing relentlessly. Cotto backs up after a left hand, and blood is flowing from his nose.

Margarito is looking fantastic all of a sudden. A serious turn of events is happening this round.

Cotto is blocking shots, but Margarito is just refusing to back down. Margarito walks through a hard shot to the mouth. Right hand from Margarito! Cotto is tiring, and we’ve got a fucking FIGHT on our hands.

Cotto fires back! Hard right by Margarito!

WHOOOOOO BOY
What a ROUND!

Cotto-Margarito R8

Cotto is dancing now, jabbing, not moving AROUND the perimeter, but back and forth on the perimeter. Now he starts moving around the ring again.

Margarito just will not relent. Cotto is being tested right now like NEVER before.

Margarito is like the fucking Terminator. He might not get the job done with great agility or flash, but you can’t hurt him and he WILL have you bend to his will.

He’s chasing Cotto, though Cotto has regrouped and rebounded a little. Cotto with a combination, moves away, and he’s scoring. Margarito traps him again! Margarito EATS two VICIOUS shots. Like he wasn’t hit. Like you fucking punched the Terminator.

Cotto used this round to regroup, and THERE’S A FLURRY FROM COTTO! It ends with Margarito whomping him, but this is just outstanding.

Cotto 10-9
Cotto 79-73

You might have this fight closer. A couple rounds were very, very tight.

Cotto-Margarito R9

Lederman has it 76-76. So again, much tighter than me. I have LOVED this fight.

Margarito is chasing, pressing. But Cotto isn’t running. He’s fighting, just on his terms if he can help it. Margarito fires away with punches in bunches. Margarito pounds away in the corner! This is some FIGHT.

Sharp right from Cotto—some great Cotto punches are going unnoticed because Margarito just does not react.

Cotto is slipping a lot, but now Margarito’s aggressiveness is REALLY showing for me. Cotto with a left hook. Margarito is so fucking determined.

Margarito 10-9 (Cotto might have landed the better shots, but Tony is the man forcing the action now—completely)

Cotto-Margarito R10

Margarito is again all over Cotto, peppering him with shots that might not all be landing, none of them landing huge, but Cotto is just not punching back. He’s tired, but he’s strong and tough and has a will of his own. Margarito’s will is legendary; Cotto’s isn’t too far behind.

Nice shots from Cotto, quick stuff that ends with a hard shot. Big left hook from Cotto, Margarito is fighting back. God, is this a hell of a fight or what? If someone had Tony up a point, i’m not arguing.

This is looking more like the early rounds, where Cotto was just outhustling Margarito and beating him to the punch. Here’s a rally from Margarito. Cotto escapes. Margarito hurt shim!

COTTO’S HURT! Cotto ties him up and makes it out of the round. Wow.

see

that fight was amazing, I thought, and underrated. Williams got on Margarito early, but then Tony hurt him down the stretch and almost dropped him late. When Williams gets pressured, he fails. Quintana managed it, too.
