Luis Carlos Abregu v. Thomas Davis up first

Abregu’s a 25-year old Argentinian with nice KO numbers, but we’ll see.

Davis/Abregu up first

For some reason, I have an irrational love for Thomas Davis

Abregu-Davis R1

Ah-bray-goo is the pronounciation if I am to believe Joe.

Davis is wearing borrowed trunks with adhesive tape around the waist.

Abregu catches Davis with a left, and then storms at him with a hard right against the ropes. He’s throwing really hard shots, and Davis is content to cover up and maybe try to get him to gas out early if he can weather the storm. Davis hit with a shot to the body, right to the head. He’s covering up and doing very little offensively. He’s wiping at his eye with the glove, then clinches up and forces a restart in the center.

Davis is getting pounded. Yeah, he’s covering, but he’s going to get hurt sooner or later. Abregu hits him with a hard shot to the body, and then a monster right hand that puts him on his knees.

Up at eight, Davis will continue on. He seems really unenthusiastic about doing so. Abregu storms Davis, but the bell sounds.

Abregu-Davis R2

I don’t think this will get out of the second round. Abregu’s going to knock him out pretty fast if this keeps up. He looks really comfortable, really confident, and Davis looks like he doesn’t want to be here.

OH GOD, RIGHT HAND

Told ya—Davis is up at eight but he’s hurt, wiping at his eye. They’re continuing? Why? This is a farce.

Abregu’[s chasing him around, and Davis is legitimately running. They should stop this.

Davis’ corner stops it. Thank God. He had no business in there. This might as well have been a forfeit.

Well...

Okay, maybe he’s done.

Davis never takes easy fights, which is a problem because he rarely wins when he’s in tough.

by schraubd on Jul 30, 2008 9:12 PM EDT   0 recs

second knockdown was in fact a left hook

Threw a right, glanced, came up and under with a big left. Nice sequence. Davis should quit.

Castillo-Lujan R1

Lujan pops Castillo with a right quickly. Castillo is definitely moving around better than he did against Hatton, and you can already see that. He looks like he wants to go to the body, his trademark. Jab to the body from Lujan, sends Castillo backward a little bit.

Lujan gives a lot of looks to an opponent, constant motion. Castillo seems to be having some trouble getting a handle on Lujan, who comes swinging with a big right haymaker, but he was in too close. Left hand from Lujan. Castillo is looking fairly aggressive, as is Lujan. Nice little combo from Lujan, and he’s popping Castillo pretty routinely now. Not great shots, but if one like those lands clean, JLC will be in trouble.

If Jose can get his body work moving, he might be able to get something done here. First round belongs to Lujan on activity and landing more and better punches. Castillo does look OK, though.

Castillo-Lujan R2

Castillo with a short shot, and now he rocks Lujan! Lujan showboats against the ropes, but he was clearly drilled there. Body shot from Lujan. I actually like that Castillo didn’t run in and throw wild on Lujan. That’s veteran presence and savvy.

Sweet, pretty counter left hook from Castillo. Lujan’s punches land with thuds but don’t seem to have a lot of zip on them. Nice body shot from Jose. He’s looking much better this round.

Teddy goes into a quaint story about handball to discuss the differences between Castillo and Lujan.

Castillo is landing sharp, strong shots now. This is an entertaining scrap so far, and I don’t know how this is going to turn out.

Castillo-Lujan R3

Things get slower over the first half of this round, and it’s still up for grabs. There’s a quick combo from Lujan, and he’s landing sneaky stuff right now that seems surprising for Castillo. He’s got the quicker hands. Man, I could watch Lujan any day. He comes to fight and mix it up.

Activity wins the round again for Lujan. Castillo needs to find some openings, because it appears he has more power, which slightly surprises me.

Castillo-Lujan R4

Stiff jab from Castillo. Lujan just keeps coming forward. Castillo really might need great rounds like he had in two just to win this fight. If this goes 10 I could see Lujan racking up round after round thanks to activity when Castillo isn’t shaking him up or hurting him with power shots.

Castillo badly misses a big left hook. I think he might be getting a little frustrated. They’re mixing it up on the inside and Lujan just punches, punches, punches. Castillo is trying to land counters, but it’s hard because Lujan is never standing still. Lujan has thrown almost 300 head shots on the punch tracker.

Another round for Lujan. Pure aggression.

Castillo-Lujan R5

They keep saying “upset-minded Sebastian Lujan”—would it really be an upset to anyone that knows what they’re talking about? Like, really?

Lujan has thrown just under 100 punches per round so far (398 total, 100+ in the last three rounds).

Castillo digging to the body. Lujan with a chopping right. Lujan isn’t hurting Castillo, whose toughness certainly hasn’t left him.

Lujan tries to pull some Roy Jones shit but it doesn’t work because Lujan isn’t Roy Jones.

Lujan might be getting a bit tired. Castillo, to his credit, has never backed off. He’s staying in there and banging away, doing his thing. Bell sounds.

Castillo-Lujan R6

The pace has slowed a bit on both sides—actually I guess it’s just Lujan slowing down to what has essentially been the same consistent pace from JLC.

Castillo and Lujan start trading heavy stuff in the center, and Jose looks like he’s winning that fight. Lujan just fights and fights, but he’s going to get clocked doing that sooner or later.

Lujan’s activity (even slowed down) wins him another round, but this one was close.

Castillo-Lujan R7

Castillo is starting to look physically banged up a little. Not terrible but the weathering is showing now.

Right hand by Lujan, and he’s winning another round. Jose’s got a minute of the seventh to turn this around, but Lujan is starting to put some distance between them on the cards, I think. You never know with the fuckin’ judges, but Lujan is just plain winning this fight. Castillo isn’t embarrassing himself at all; he’s fighting hard and doing OK, but Lujan is too energetic and too active for him, it appears.

Lujan sneaks a clever left hand in to counter a nice shot from Castillo. Bell sounds, another for Lujan.

Castillo-Lujan R8

They crouch down and war up in the center again. God bless Castillo. Win or lose he’s shown up tonight in good shape, ready to fight, and he’s done it. He’s just fighting the wrong guy.

Nice right hand by Lujan with about 45 seconds to go in the round, another one that’s looking to be in the books for Lujan. Boy, Lujan is doing great work. Castillo is wearing out, his pressure hasn’t deterred Lujan, and we’re witnessing what may be the final few rounds of his career.

Castillo-Lujan R9

Lujan threw 149 punches last round. 149!

Nice left from Lujan slips in between some missed rights in a three-punch combo. Teddy waxes…something: “When you get him with a horse who’s a rabbit…”

Punching, punching, punching. Lujan does not have a brake. It’s all pedal to the floor. Castillo being tagged against the ropes, not landing anything back.

It deserves to be said this has been a very entertaining fight, too.

Castillo-Lujan R10

This could be it for Jose Luis Castillo.

Body shot from Lujan, and then he just lets his hands go. Teddy has it 89-82 for Lujan.

Lujan missed a punch and then sort of backhanded at Castillo. He’s done that a couple of times. That’s how relentless his activity is.

Castillo has one minute to go. Lujan has to think he has this fight under control, but he’s not risking taking a round off, and that’s probably wise. Some of the shit we’ve seen.

Castillo might as well just straight up go for broke, but I don’t think he’s going to. Lujan hurts Castillo on the ropes! JLC fights back. Man, he gave us a performance tonight, I’ll give him that.

In many ways, this was reminiscent of the last fight of Diego Corrales’ career. An outgunned, aged warrior losing badly but not backing off.
