Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Joel Casamayor v. Juan Manuel Marquez

We'll go live at 9pm ET with round-by-round coverage and scoring of the entire pay-per-view card from Las Vegas, main evented by the lightweight championship fight between Joel Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez. Join us!

7:10pm ET Update: With it appearing as though Campbell-Guzman will be cancelled, this might be the only real option for the night. Nothing new has come down the news pipelines since about 4pm. We'll be going live with Casamayor-Marquez at 9, just as planned.

7:16pm ET Update: Campbell-Guzman is officially off, according to FightHype.com. No word on what Showtime will do with their card, but I'd guess they'll bump Bradley-Cherry into an awkward main event role and send the Velazquez-Rojas featherweight eliminator onto the open TV slot.

Guzman-Campbell fight might not happen tonight!?!?!?

I forgot where I read it this morning but according to source he [Guzman] had to go to the hospital last night because of dehydration and needed fluids back into his body.

Don’t know if its real or not, but I sure hope it isn’t. If it is — FUCK!

Bet you anything GoldenBoy Pro had something to do with this.

Oscar paid Mayweather to feed chunks of cheese burgers from time to time to Guzman. “We need to sell the Golden PPV” hahahahahahahaha

Jokes aside I was really looking forward for this fight.

Kotelnik beats Kimura

Unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 118-110). He’ll probably defend the WBA 140-pound title against Dmitriy Salita on the Calzaghe-Jones undercard.

Pathetic.

It is pathetic that Guzman, a world/championship class fighter. just ruined the card. He ran his mouth for months to Campbell and now he is in a hospital due to his incompetency when preparing for the biggest fight of his career.

He is the best in the business. He went irate when Cortez stole a KO from Soto and tore the Nevada offical a new hole. I have much respect for someone that will go that far to make it known what his opinion is. Max has had some good rants as of late. He ripped the judging in the last HBO BAD.

Garcia-Perez R1

Ah shit, it’s Joe Cortez.

Garcia caught upstairs with a hook, then a sneaky counter left. Garcia with an uppercut. Lots of circling and trading to start. Garcia looks TOO loose. Perez kind of seems more concerned with surviving the round than scoring at intervals, but then he does counter when Garcia throws. He’s sticking the jab in when he feels like it, as Garcia offers no resistance.

Body shots from Garcia. Perez is pressing the action a bit, but lands nothing of note. Fairly close round to start the night’s action.

Garcia-Perez R2

They’re having some audio troubles with the commentary mics. The ol’ underwater effect.

Nice sharp left from Perez counters a bunch of missed shots from Garcia. Garcia is landing well-timed body shots, which might add up quickly. Perez reaching with a jab, while Garcia is doing absolutely nothing but. Big right from Perez.

Perez digs to the body. Let me tell you something, he’s beating Garcia early in this fight, and I think fairly decidedly so. Garcia has stopped punching, and is just absorbing shots from the veteran. Perez is kicking Garcia’s ass this round, in fact.

He’s slipping in a nice counter left, which looks lazy but is popping Garcia without any trouble. Right hand from Perez. What the hell is Garcia DOING this round? If anything more serious had landed, that would be a 10-8.

Garcia-Perez R3

OK, let’s see if Julio Garcia has decided to fight. Yep, shows right away. Now they trade, throwing heavy shots at center ring!

Another minute in, and I think we’re seeing Perez win another round. Nice left from Perez. There’s a chopping right from Garcia. Garcia is way, way too willing to back off and try too hard to figure out what his next move will be, all while Perez is dancing and sticking. Body shot from Garcia.

Snapping jab from Perez. That might’ve been the best looking jab he’s thrown yet, sharp and accurate. Left and a right from Perez. Combined with the Browning fight, this is making me wonder how much fire Julio Garcia has. He seems to have no sense of urgency whatsoever, no desire to hurt Perez, and at times, no desire to even fight him.

Garcia-Perez R4

Watching Garcia’s footwork, he really does look like a guy that has no real desire to be in there. When he doesn’t land a shot, he stumbles away and fully resets himself. Meanwhile, Perez continues to score, a body shot and then some jabs. Clash of heads, and Cortez calls time.

Perez with an uppercut. Garcia has absolutely no passion whatsoever. This is really troubling to watch a guy look so much like he has no interest in fighting. He occasionally lets his hands go, but seems to have no intent. Perez is fighting. Garcia is present in a fight.

Left hand stings Garcia, and now he’s warned for a shot to the back of the head. Well not formally warned. He landed a more serious back of the head blow earlier with no notification from Cortez.

Three-punch combo from Perez puts an exclamation point on another round for the vet.

Garcia-Perez R5

If this goes to the cards, Garcia is going to want to turn it up now. He’s losing badly. This isn’t even a competition so far.

Garcia throws a hard body shot, but it strays low. Just barely, but low is low. Garcia with three jabs and a right. Garcia with a two-punch combo. Now he seems like he’s actually fighting. His corner told him he was losing and that he needed to punch more. Good thing he’s not trained by Brendon Smith.

Another body shot seems to go low, but Cortez says nada. Garcia backs down again as Perez throws on him. Left hook falls short for Garcia, who is having his best round and still seems to be losing.

Long right puts Garcia on his bicycle once again. This is almost bewildering.

Garcia-Perez R6

Perez comes out with a left upstairs and a left to the body. More jabs. Right hand from Perez, and he follows up with more work. Garcia isn’t doing shit. Let’s be honest. He’s offering nothing. He’s here for reasons I can’t explain while watching him do his job.

Nice body work from Perez, who continues to push Garcia around. Frankly speaking, this is awful and one-sided. I feel bad for Danny Perez — he deserves a better opponent.

Perez continues to pepper him with shots, nothing big, no bombs, but scoring blows that are going to give him round upon round come time for that final bell in round ten. Garcia is fighting like a flat-out bum. He does come back a smidge at the end of the round, but not even close to enough.

Garcia-Perez R7

My main concern right now is that they’re going to rob this poor bastard.

When commentators talk about a puncher’s chance and repeatedly say “you have to throw it to land it,” you know the fight isn’t going as planned for one guy. Perez seems to want to goad Garcia into a fight, which Garcia isn’t too keen on. The boo birds are coming out a little bit.

Nice left by Garcia, and Perez reacts with machismo showmanship. Perez may lull himself to sleep. Garcia with a nice combo. He might be taking a round as Perez seems to have become overly confident in Garcia refusing to duel.

Pretty jab from Perez, and he closes the round out strong. Perez does seem a little fatigued.

Garcia-Perez R8

Perez looks fresh this round, so the theory that he sandbagged the seventh might prove true. He lands a couple of nice shots, and their heads come together again moments later.

Perez with an uppercut inside. Combo by Perez, Garcia fails to counter. Again the heads touch. Double hook from Perez. One-two from Garcia. Body shot from Perez.

This is the goddamnedest thing. Really, it’s pretty damned dull, but it’s so interesting just from a psychological standpoint. Two to the head, one to the body. Perez continues his domination. Garcia is completely uninspiring.

Garcia-Perez R9

Perez’s corner insists he just box and stay out of Garcia’s wheelhouse. Garcia’s corner urges their man to score a KO. “We can’t leave here defeated. Think of your family!”

Garcia even comes off his stool late and lazy to start this round. Perez works the jab. Garcia JUST misses a right hand that could’ve been a tide turner. He’s throwing heavier stuff, but not exactly pushing the action onto Perez’s head. Perez turns on a right from Garcia and eats it easily.

If Garcia was expecting a pushover, I guess he’s been surprised. He’s trying a little, but not enough. One right hand lands from Garcia, then nothing more. Garcia with a hard left to the ribs, but Perez isn’t deterred, and has yet to be backed down. When Garcia hits him, he keeps coming forward. Tough round to score in a lot of ways, but I think Garcia eked it out on a few hard shots.

Garcia-Perez R10

Garcia corner: “There’s no more time. No more time for anything. … You can’t stop!”

The stats say Garcia landed only four punches last round, so maybe I saw that one quite wrong. Hey, I’m not infallible. Perez slapped and smothered, which rarely impresses me.

Still, this fight has been all Danny Perez, one way or the other. He doesn’t even look good. He’s fighting like a guy that would get his ass kicked in by someone who fights like Garcia is supposed to. Nice combo from Perez, and now he’s stupidly slugging it out. Another good combo from Perez. His shots don’t have a lot of sting on them, but that beats the nothing that Garcia has offered.

Garcia with an uppercut, Perez comes back with a flurry. Story of the fight. 10 seconds left.

Perez will finish by throwing to the body, and throwing upstairs. Garcia complains about another head clash.

Ortiz-Arrieta R1

Ortiz stays patient, stalking Arrieta around the ring. Fast combo, doesn’t quite get in. Arrieta did make one quick charge a few moments ago, but now he’s back to circling away from Ortiz. Nice right by Ortiz, and he backs Arrieta into the ropes, which Arrieta escapes quickly.

Ortiz knocks Arrieta back with a left, bulling him into the ropes, which Arrieta bounces off of to get back to center ring. Ortiz with a couple more quick shots near the end of the round.

Ortiz-Arrieta R2

Arrieta takes a left, stumbles, and falls. Delayed fall. So Arrieta takes the standing eight and continues on.

Nice body shot from Ortiz, who is getting Arrieta to throw bombs with him, which would seem to favor Ortiz. Arrieta is already swelling a bit around the eye. Ortiz looks like he wants to make this a short night of work. The difference in the two 21-year old fighters we’ve seen tonight is immense.

Uppercut from Ortiz. “Vicious” is a good nickname for him, even if he is an easy-going cat. His work inside can be brutal. RIPPING body shot from Ortiz, a right hook dead into the ribs. Arrieta, bless him, is willing to trade when he has no other option. He’s not turtling.

We’re watching a real solid prospect toy with a regional veteran, and not a very good one, at that. This is a physical mismatch of the first order. Ortiz is strong, sturdy, and confident. Arrieta? Not as much.

Ortiz-Arrieta R4

Wicked combo from Ortiz, and Arrieta hangs on. Back to the same combo, and Arrieta goes down again. Just under two minutes left.

Arrieta is now trying to bum rush Ortiz, which will get him knocked out soon. He’s eating hard shots, and I think he’s bleeding near both eyes. There’s a big one over the right eye. Arrieta is getting TAGGED! Ortiz is on him like white on rice, if you will.

Again, though, bless Arrieta, he’s fighting back as best he can. The cut’s bothering him. Arrieta is now in pure survival mode. And he will survive this round, if barely.

Ortiz-Arrieta R5

Ortiz comes out throwing heavy shots right after the bell. Sharp right jab hurts Arrieta again about a minute in. Two body shots, right and then left. Ortiz is just doing his work.

Uppercut barely misses. Arrieta charges in, and takes a hard right from Ortiz. Arrieta slips after making Ortiz miss most of a flurry. WICKED left hand! Arrieta goes down again!

And Jay Nady will stop it. Good stoppage. Nady took a hard look into Arrieta’s eyes and decided that no more was needed.

Mora’s doing his gimmick, shifting around, duckin and a-dodgin. Forrest is staying square. Mora with a shot to the body. Pretty cautious opening round.

Forrest barely misses a big left hook. Another body shot from Mora. Dracula warns Mora to keep the punches up. Then says nothing about a low shot.

God, can’t you guys FEEL the EXCITEMENT?

Long right from Forrest scrapes Mora, and Mora clinches up. I’m more interested in what round Buddy gets frustrated and goes, “Don’t you wanna hit this motherfucker?! You gotta hit this motherfucker, BAY-BEE! C’mon, champ! Beautiful! Beautiful beautiful beautiful, baby baby!”

Well this sucks, just like the first fight did. Mora shakes and shimmies around the ring, and Forrest bobs his shoulders a lot. Vernon is winning this round by default.

Couple of rights from Forrest. That carries the calling action through the last minute and a half.

Mora-Forrest R3

They clash heads, and Vernon tries to call Dracula’s attention to it while Mora chases him around. Two lefts to the body from Forrest, and he smacks Mora around upstairs, too. Slappy left from Mora. Uppercut from Vernon. He’s working the jab pretty effectively and setting Mora up, beating the herky-jerky style. Big left by Forrest, stiff jab from Mora. Nice left from Forrest. I think Sergio’s getting hurt a little bit this round. Forrest looks good right now.

Nice round from Vernon, who has the momentum for the moment. Fairly entertaining round, too.

Mora’s attempts to bully Forrest despite having zero power — pretty interesting approach, I’ll give him that. Forrest, though, is out-hustling Mora for the most part, and landing much cleaner shots. Nice uppercut from Forrest, and there he stings Mora with a right. Mora does the bring it on gimmick.

Low blow from Vernon, Dracula warns him.

Double jab from Mora, Forrest with nice body shots and Mora hits a left hook, slap-style. Another strong round for Vernon, though Mora did some good things this round, too.

I do think the weight issues are plaguing Sergio, who looks far more sluggish than usual. He’s just not moving around with his usual snakiness.

Forrest holds and hits about three times, and Dracula warns for that, too. Forrest seems to go low after, but but Mora stays with him inside and tries to bang away. Great right hand from Vernon! Mora got hurt there. He’s got a small cut under his left eye.

Mora is getting SLAMMED in the final 10 seconds. These two are getting dirty and mean-spirited in there. Mora’s looking out of shape, foolish, and desperate already.

Right now, Vernon is inching closer and closer to the level where you can safely say he’s dominating.

I’m not sure exactly what Sergio’s idea is here. Is he just stupid? Is he just out of shape? Is Vernon just in shape and better than Sergio? Probably all three.

TWO big right hands from Vernon. Mora is getting tagged against the ropes! Sergio seems to be clueless right now. Forrest is chopping his tree down and making him watch from the inside of an 89 Escort with two broken doors. Or some other folksy-type shit.

Left lands, right lands, right to the body lands. Forrest is kicking Mora’s ass. Couple of nice body shots from Mora.

Mora-Forrest R7

That cheap shot from Mora at the end of the sixth was pretty punkass’d. I hope Forrest knocks him out. For one thing, I’m kinda tired, and for another thing, I want to get to the main event.

Jab jab right from Vernon. He’s owning Mora. Thoroughly, in fact. Beating the crap out of him.

If this keeps up, it’ll end the days of Sergio Mora: Money Fighter. He has no appeal if he loses his “0,” I don’t think, because at that point he’s the Contender dude and nothing more.

Two jabs from Forrest. Another couple of jabs. Mora isn’t accomplishing anything offensively. Vernon is smoking him. Jab-right from Forrest. Mora throws a left, lands it, and eats a right for doing so. LEFT HOOK AND MORA IS DOWN!

He tries to complain that he didn’t go down, that his knee didn’t touch. Dracula counts it out after the bell has sounded, and the fight will go on because Mora is relatively OK.

Movin’ in and out baby! Beautiful!

Mora-Forrest R8

I think Mora’s shot.

Forrest continues beating Mora like a rented mule, now backing him into the ropes and going to work. Forrest is smiling on breaks, totally in control of the fight. Vernon with some rights, and Mora is hurting and reeling. About 1:20 left in the round. Mora could go at any time if Vernon catches him cold. This all comes from Forrest (1) being in shape and (2) having zero fear of Mora’s power, or lack thereof.

Quick video outage, nothing missed.

Nice left from Forrest. Mora tries to rush him, but to no avail.

Mora-Forrest R9

Mora is totally discouraged.

You could guess the winner of this just looking at the bodies of both guys tonight. Forrest looks solid, sturdy, and well-built. Mora looks frail, almost sickly.

STINGING right hand from Mora appears to hurt Forrest a little bit. I think Vernon took his foot too far off the gas. That’s a big momentum swinger. Mora put all he had into that and it landed square. Uppercut from Vernon, and a hard straight right hand follows. Mora hurt now. Nice body show from Forrest. What looked like it could be a swing back round for Mora disappeared. Jab and a right, Mora’s reeling with 10 seconds left, but he barely hangs on. Mora’s getting manhandled.

Nice right from Vernon again, followed by another double jab. And another.

Stiff jab from Vernon as Mora tries to mount an offense with no success. Jab-right combo, followed with another right from Forrest. Mora with a nice left. Forrest steps away from a lunging right and lands a couple more shots.

The only shot Mora has is a knockout. Good luck with those pussywillow swipes of death.

Shady start to the round as they touch gloves and Mora goes RIGHT after him. Two rights from Forrest, just little pot shots. There’s a hard 1-2 by Forrest. Right hand hurts Mora. Left hand hurts him. Wild right misses. Stiff jab, body shot too.

One minute until the “0” goes.

Forrest misses a big left hook, but lands one that follows right after. Another left from Forrest. Mora tagged with another right, but he makes it all 12.

"Affliction, whose apparel is popular with many MMA fighters and boxers such as Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins, promoted its first MMA event July 19 in Anaheim, Calif. A second show was scheduled for Oct. 11 in Las Vegas but postponed because of lagging ticket sales.

The main event was supposed to be a heavyweight match between Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett with the winner expected to face Fedor Emelianenko.

When the card was called off, Golden Boy attempted to have Arlovski-Barnett rescheduled as part of the Oct. 18 Pavlik-Hopkins HBO PPV card. However, co-promoter Top Rank and HBO rejected the overture.

“They presented us with the option and we respectfully declined,” HBO PPV chief Mark Taffet told ESPN.com."

Casamayor-Marquez R1

Quick trade about 20 seconds in, nobody wins that one. Marquez with a chopping right, two of them in fact. Body shot from Casamayor. Left hook by Marquez just misses. Casa warned early for his tactics. Marquez with a left, eats one right back. Another quick exchange, that one won by Casamayor with a nice combo.

Swinging left by Casa just grazes the jaw. Right by Marquez, counter by Casamayor fires right back. Nice left from Joel. This is no counter-punching, really. These guys are coming forward. First round that isn’t spectacular, but enough to wake you up.

Casamayor-Marquez R2

Nacho advises Marquez to give Casa the first couple rounds, apparently.

Swift left by Casmayor. Another left, this one down the middle. Casamayor looks very fast tonigh. Marquez with a body shot. Marquez is coming up just short frequently. He does it again on a left hand counter attempt. Right down the middle from Marquez is blocked. Exchange, nothing landed. Exchange, little landed.

Casa’s doing his thing defensively, and I think Marquez might just be feeling him out. Marquez with an uppercut and a right hand. Casamayor comes back with a left. Casa isn’t pressing as much this round, going back to his more natural style.

Tight round, hard to score.

Casamayor-Marquez R3

Marquez to the body, Casamayor counters up top. Casamayor with a left that catches Marquez. HARD right from Marquez on the back end of a combination. Left hand from Casamayor. I really feel like Marquez should turn up the heat. That right hand shook Joel.

Marquez accidentally goes low, no time wasted.

Marquez looks a little more fluid this round than he did in the first two, and Casamayor seems to be trying to adjust to that. Both guys have such good defense and fundamentals that they’re missing a ton, but it’s not boring. This is a close, close fight so far. Nothing has been answered.

Casamayor-Marquez R4

The first three rounds of this are making that Forrest-Mora fight look even worse. Or at least making Mora look even worse.

Marquez with a nice combo, then he picks off Casamayor’s counter attempt. Four-punch combo from Marquez! I think he’s finding some holes in Casamyor’s defense. Marquez charges, throwing four punches and grazing on a final uppercut.

Left hand by Casamayor, and another one. Marquez with a right! This is a couple of master pro tacticians in a chess battle. Not unexpected.

Another left from Casamayor. Marquez with a right. Another left from Casamayor. Right from Marquez just misses. Casa blocks three punches. Casa to the body, Marquez with a right counter upstairs. Nice left from Casamayor to finish the round.

I’m likin’ this one!

HOLY SHIT IT’S WINKY WRIGHT!

Short left counter by Joel. Left to the body from Casamayor. Marquez comes in with a combo, but he’s still coming up short more often than he’d like. He can’t quite get inside on Joel. BIG right from Marquez! He stuck that one in like a rocket.

Casamayor has some blood from a cut over his right eye.

Yeah, the cut is getting worse. Hard right from Marquez! Good round for Juan Manuel. This is an interesting, tense battle.

Casamayor-Marquez R6

Marquez goes to work, like he wants to test Joel’s mettle and that cut. It’s very smart, the cut is fugly. We aren’t getting through 12 rounds with that cut.

Marquez seems to be taking the momentum. He’s landing more accurately, and Joel’s speed doesn’t look like it did early on. The cut could have something to do with that, or age, or just the other fella hitting back. Left from Casamayor. Marquez lands a right to head, and a combo inside works out for him. Casa with a left, Marquez counters with a glancing blow.

NICE 1-2 from Marquez. Yep — he’s taking control of the fight. Woops, there’s a left from Joel. And a right from Marquez. Casamayor is now bleeding from the nose. Marquez is headhunting more than I’d like, but he’s smelling blood. WICKED right from Marquez! And another right lands. Great round for Marquez.

Casamayor-Marquez R7

Marquez sticks the right hand in again, and again. Way, way, way low blow by Casamayor. Here he goes.

Casa takes a couple of good shots, but lands a nice left on the inside, too. I think JMM has his number, though. This is very much turning into his fight. The speed advantage has shifted very much.

Marquez with a combo cut off via clinch. Left to the body, left to the jaw by Marquez. Left hook sneaks in again. Casamayor is being repeatedly beaten to the punch. And another round goes to Juan Manuel Marquez. He’s looking very good. Nacho’s advice may have been smart after all.

Casamayor-Marquez R8

Casamayor’s trying to find a way to get inside and work his magic, but Marquez is now staying away from him and feeling him out. Marquez with a counter right. Left to the body from Marquez after a Casamayor left lands upstairs. Left from Casa, Marquez counter misses.

Casamayor with another left, and I think he’s looking better this round. It may also be that Marquez is laying back a bit more. STIFF left from Casamayor. Marquez fires back. Casa with a left. The commentators are now clearly favoring Marquez, I think. This was a good round for Joel. He snapped Juan’s head back a few times and landed consistently.

Casamayor-Marquez R9

Left to the body by Casamayor. Left upstairs lands, and Joel dodges the counter from Marquez. Marquez with a quick jab. Right hook by Casa, but the left follow-up misses badly. Marquez catches Casa coming in with a short blow.

This is really an interesting fight, and I think it’s still very close. Casamayor has shut down Marquez’s momentum enough to get himself back in it for real.

Marquez caught with another counter left. Casamayor is looking elusive again. Casa with a left, Marquez answers with a somewhat sloppy left hook. Right from Marquez is blocked. Short left from Casamayor, judged a combination by the commentary.

I think we’ve got an even fight through the first three quarters.

Casamayor-Marquez R10

There’s an exchange with Casamayor flailing his arms wildly and landing nothing. Much ado about said nothing.

Short left from Casamayor again. Marquez with a shot to the body. Marquez’s activity HAS slowed down. Marquez and Casamayor catch each other almost simultaneously. BIG right from Marquez! Really great looking punch. Casamayor taunts, and gets hit with a left. Uppercut by Marquez is short. Nice combo by Marquez. He’s back in the swing of things, it appears.

Marquez catches Casa a few more times in the final 15 seconds. Great finish, and another good round for Juan Manuel. I’ll say this — the only rounds I think have been totally clear have been in Juan Manuel’s favor.

Casamayor-Marquez R11

This is a tight first minute. Marquez with a right to the gut. Casamayor seems like he can’t find the opening he wants. Straight left from Casamayor. Marquez with a left, then an uppercut, but falls just short on a haymaker right hand.

Casa eats a right. This is still a tough round to score with about 45 seconds left. Very tactical. They start trading, and Casamayor is nailed with a right hand and he is down!

He’s up, and he just wants to hang on. Casamayor takes serious punishment and finally falls! IT’S OVER!
