Bad Left Hook Fight Night: Rafael Concepcion v. Jorge Arce

You know what I hate about this coming weekend? No boxing.

To try and cover some time, I'll be watching and scoring the fight between Jorge Arce and WBA interim super flyweight titlist Rafael Concepcion tonight, starting at 10 11pm ET on TV Azteca. Arce is always a hoot, and Concepcion is coming off of a shocking and devastating knockout of Filipino prospect AJ Banal.

If Concepcion wins again tonight, I'll consider it another massive upset. Arce is obviously far more experienced, bigger, has the hometown advantage, and should be considered the heavy favorite.

Arce is a joke in my opinion. The only reason he is popular in Mexico is due to the fact that he was on dancing with the stars. Cristian Mijares made a fool out of him. Speaking of which, I am so damn glad that he is going to face Vic for a unification fight. I hate that there are “championship fights” when there is a clear cut champ in the division. There is no need for an interim fight. It is just a way for the WBA to collect more money.

yup

But Arce is a fun fighter to watch because he’s always entertaining. I can’t hate on a guy that comes to fight.

undercard opener will be...

Jorge Solis (35-1-2, 25 KO) v. Jorge Samudio (17-3-1, 7 KO)

You may remember Solis from a budget Manny Pacquiao fight in ’07, and as the less talented brother of Ulises.

Yep. I’ll pick up the coverage when some dudes get in the ring. This is 10, two-minute rounds. I’m not trying to be sexist but women’s boxing? Not for me.

Although this is a hell of a brawl.

Solis-Samudio R1

Solis starts off sticking the jab in, gauging distance. Samudio is cautious to start, as expected. 10 rounds, if you’re curious or unsure or don’t care at all, I’m saying it anyway. Making a note.

Solis wants to double and triple the jab, but it looks a little lazy so far. Right hand from Samudio brushes the jaw. Long lead right from Solis, but Samudio counters back. Uppercut from Solis falls short. Right to the body does not. He’s trying to jab and then go to the right hand, but he’s not quite getting it there. Clash of heads, and Solis takes a moment. Looks like it caught him in the nose.

Solis-Samudio R2

Solis starting aggressively, but not landing much. He’s got an awkward lunge on his right hand when it follows the jab. Samudio pushes him back with a right.

Solis is definitely the fighter in pursuit and Samudio the counter-puncher thus far. So little is landing clean that there’s going to be some emphasis on pressing the action. Plus this IS Mexico, where judges think Chavez swept Vanda.

Solis is brushing with those long, clobbering right hands. If one of those lands square, Samudio is going to be in some trouble. Decent little combo from Solis near the bell.

Solis-Samudio R3

TV gives the second to Samudio.

Looks like they might’ve come together again about 25 seconds into this round, but I couldn’t quite catch what happened. Solis does look fairly sloppy, but I think it’s obvious so far that Samudio isn’t quite good enough to make him pay. Left followed by a right uppercut from Solis. Solis slips.

Right hand from Samudio, who’s looking more willing to come first this round. Jab from Solis. Getting kind of rough on the inside now. Solis doesn’t seem steady on his feet. Like he’s eternally off-balance, even when he’s the one throwing everything. He looked similar in the Pacquiao fight, too, and as soon as Manny wanted to, it seemed, he decked him.

Samudio might be building a little momentum on Solis’ home turf.

Solis-Samudio R4

Samudio has definitely gained some confidence, and he’s winging some fuckin’ haymakers at Solis now. A monster right barely comes up short. Solis needs to figure this guy out or we might be in store for an upset. Here comes Solis! He’s got Samudio rocked a little bit, and he refuses to stop throwing or let Samudio clinch up. It’s a pier-six brawl right now!

Leather is flying, ladies and germs!

Right from Solis, and two more! Samudio may have weathered it enough to not get hurt. Right and a left. Samudio is hurt! He quits! He walks to his corner and quits!

There is no fight that would draw this many fans in the United States, no matter what day it was. 8,000 (a little less) for Casa-Marquez this weekend stunk a week after 14,000 turned out in Houston for Diaz and Juarez.

Concepcion-Arce R1

Hey, Steve Smoger. Someone’s gonna get hit too many times! Beats Cortez, I guess.

Left hand from Arce after a cautious first minute, and they scrap a bit near the ropes, with Concepcion’s back facing the cables. Lots of circling, very little action thus far. Arce looks like the far bigger man.

Concepcion digs at the body a little, again near the ropes, this time with Arce pressed back. Short counter left from Arce lands. Right hand from Concepcion, and he’s landing some to the body. Now they mix it up! Arce is absorbing some shots, and looking for places to fire back. He’s finding it! Arce chases Concepcion into the ropes. Arce has a big size advantage naturally, and he finishes the round by making that very statement. He’s the bigger 115-pounder, and he’s going to impose his will.

Concepcion-Arce R2

Arce fires the jab in, and Concepcion tries to come inside. Being away from Arce is bad news for him. Concepcion with a stiff right, Arce responds. Chopping right from Concepcion, and now they slug again. Arce is always fun. Always. He may be overmatched against a slick boxer, but he’s a riot.

Arce keeps going to the body to soften Concepcion up, which is admirable to see from the “big” guy in a fight. Arce rocks Concepcion a little bit, but Rafael is hanging in there. I don’t think he has the power to deter Arce.

Arce with another hard body shot, and Concepcion, bless him, keeps trading blows. Right upstairs, left to the body from Jorge. Arce with a three-punch combination, and now he’s unloading to the body with vicious intent. Concepcion is getting hurt by these shots, and I think that’s very clear.

Concepcion-Arce R3

If Jorge keeps landing those nasty body blows, I don’t think Concepcion lasts a whole lot longer. He doesn’t have the frame to absorb those shots and keep going.

Arce blocks Concepcion’s shots with his arms repeatedly. This round’s first minute is owned by Concepcion’s activity though. He’s coming out willing to fire, just like his countryman was against Arce earlier. I don’t expect much different of a result, either.

What’s Arce DOING this round? Nothing is the answer. One minute left and finally he starts throwing. Another WICKED shot to the body. He can easily still take this round. For as lazy as Arce looked for two minutes, Concepcion didn’t seal up 10 points during the opening.

Body, chin combo from Arce. Concepcion with a sweeping left hook, then a nice right to the jaw. Good round for him. Arce all but took the round off.

Concepcion-Arce R4

TV Azteca has weird sound effects.

Arce stunned with a right, and driven into the corner! He’s hanging on, but Concepcion tags him again! Arce ties up, and Smoger has to literally pull him off of Concepcion’s upper body. Left hooks by Concepcion! Arce is badly hurt and hanging on again!

What a turn of events this is! Arce digs to the body again, but he’s getting lazy defensively and is clearly reeling! Concepcion is on Arce like mad. Arce is on bad legs. Everything seems to be bothering him. He’s eating shots, stumbling around, and Concepcion is letting him do that, content to whack him when he sees an opening, not getting too urgent, but not laying back either.

HARD right from Concepcion! Now Arce comes back! And Arce is smacked again with a right hand! This is turning into a very dramatic fight, and the bell rings to save Arce.

HUGE round for Concepcion.

Concepcion-Arce R5

Let’s see if Arce got his legs back during the break.

Uppercut from Concepcion, and he’s gotten a lot of confidence now. No fear of Arce. Arce’s punches are predictable and his defense sucks right now. He’s doing a lot of leaning and clinching. But at least he’s stopped eating so many flush punches, and he’s back to working on Concepcion’s body.

Arce with a flurry in the corner, and Concepcion fires back! Not much big landed in there, but it had some drama. Smoger talks to Concepcion about…something. Arce backs him into the ropes and unloads again, but Concepcion makes the best he can of the situation. Arce eats more clean shots, and they end the round brawling. Arce’s machismo is coming. This is fun.

Concepcion-Arce R6

This crowd is fuckin’ awesome.

Arce is trying to lean on Concepcion as much as he can. Either his legs are gone or he hopes that’ll wear the smaller man out. Or both. Maybe the latter is a benefit of the former.

They trade hard stuff again near the ropes. Arce’s punches have purpose again this round, and are coming in strong. His legs still don’t look good. He’s an old 29, after all. Lots of rounds and lots of wars.

Arce throwing and throwing, Concepcion trying to keep pace and doing so fairly well. Arce’s tape comes loose and we take a moment to fix it. This round is still up for grabs.

Concepcion is missing badly on a lot of wild shots, and he gets stung with an uppercut! Now it’s Concepcion trying to clinch up, and Arce basically shoves him over. He’s a player of the head games for sure.

Now they throw some more! Arce is using his size to bull Concepcion around, and I think he takes another round, but this is some highly entertaining stuff on both sides. Concepcion is a lot tougher than his record looks at first glance.

Concepcion-Arce R7

They take a moment to talk with Marco Antonio Barrera at ringside. Always good to see Marco Antonio.

HARD right from Concepcion catches Arce off-guard, but Arce just won’t stop fighting and moving forward. After a clinch and break, the tape comes undone again, giving Arce another moment to compose himself.

Arce repeatedly tries to lead with that slapping left to the body, which has again lost its zeal. But here he gets Rafael into the corner again. And again, Concepcion comes out of it and starts landing shots. Left hook and a right hand bomb from Concepcion, but Arce walks through both. Arce has taken some shots that would put lesser men out.

Arce with a scoring flurry, and another round ends with both men throwing blows. This is a hell of a fight.

Concepcion-Arce R8

WHY does the round indicator graphic leave the screen with a fart noise? TV has Arce up 67-66, same rounds scored as me, but they didn’t dock Arce that extra point in the round where he spent more time collecting his balance than fighting.

Arce with hard body shots, three in total, pinning Concepcion against the ropes. Concepcion is taking hard punches now, and firing back out of desperation. And he seems to have caught Arce with one of them! One-two from Arce! Another trade, and another clinch. Bet they go right back to it — yep! This fight is rock n’ roll cool.

Left hook from Concepcion, the flailing, tiring, but collected sort. Both guys are getting tired, but they’re fighting their asses off. Arce with another scoring sequence, and he’s chasing Concepcion around the perimeter. Concepcion tries to land some potshots, and Smoger again has to physically take them away from each other.

Arce opens up again, firing, firing, firing shots! Concepcion can do little more than hang on. This is a BIG round for Jorge. Goddamn can this guy war or what?

Arce 10-8, so he gets that earlier extra point back — he had Concepcion on his bicycle this round

Concepcion-Arce R9

Slower pace to start this round, which is all relative, of course.

Body shot from Concepcion, returned in kind and Arce adds a shot upstairs for good measure. Arce again starts unloading, and Concepcion can do nothing but throw back. Concepcion’s balance looks off now. Arce catches him with a one-two and starts bombing!

Arce wins another exchange against the ropes, and it ends again with Concepcion pushing Arce away as best he can. Arce tirelessly throwing in the corner again! And by God Concepcion won’t back down! They are at WAR in here! This is one damn good fight!

Concepcion pops Arce, but Jorge just rips back at him. Arce stings Concepcion once again! And again they end the round throwing!
