Winky is back . . . maybe

Ronald Winky Wright could possibly be fighting Arthur Abraham in January according to Dan Rafael.
Winky Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs), out of action for 14 months since losing a decision in a 170-pound fight to Bernard Hopkins, could challenge middleweight titleholder Arthur Abraham of Germany in early 2009, Wright told ESPN.com
I've been missing this man for way too long and after he handles Abraham (hopefully), he should make his way back into everyone's top 10 P4P lists again. Although I'm not to pleased about what Dan had wrote in an earlier chat
David: (Odessa, TX):: Winky's best weight is at 147. Dan Rafael: I'll probably write a blog about it, but I'll clue you in -- I spoke at length with Winky yesterday. He told me he has gotten up to 198 pounds, but he plans to fight at 160 in his next fight early next year.
Either way, the man has finally decided to put down the Twinkies and get back into the ring. It's a great return for boxing . . . Once it's a done deal.

yeah I like Wink

Even though he’s been whiny a couple times, he kind of earned that right by getting ducked for years. Big up still to Mosley for fighting him like a man. I’d LOVE to see Wink-Abraham.

You'd have to think Vernon Forrest is a likely opponent now

He’s ‘back’ after taking out Mora, but who else can Vernon fight that’s a ‘name’?

I was thinking the same thing

Vernon will be ready and waiting for Winky if Winky wants to try that. I’d prefer Wright-Abraham if Pavlik-Abraham isn’t a reality, but Wright-Forrest would be a fine matchup by me.

think both can make 154?

Maybe, but I think they’d either do it at 160 (Vernon’s not going to make more money to defend his belt against anyone) or a 158-pound catchweight or something like that. Winky hasn’t cut down to 154 since ’04 and Vernon had trouble with training in June. But who knows? Maybe they could both do it.

but as silly as it sounds

don’t they need the belt to help make the match viable?

nah

They’re both veterans with names. HBO has given Winky a prime-time main event slot against Ike Quartey with no belt and no relevance, I think they’d bite on Wright-Forrest.

Or

they could get it televised on Showtime, get the IBA or some other bullshit sanctioning body to make it a title fight, and then market it as a title fight, like they did for Tarver-Santiago.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Dan agrees that it could happen as well . . .

LINK

For Forrest, the win places him squarely in the hunt for at least one more big payday. Maybe a Winky Wright fight?

I wouldn’t be mad either way but I would rather take the Abraham fight if I could choose.

I just want Winky to take on someone on the way up rather than the way down.

It would leave no doubt that he still has the talent to compete with best in his class
