Berto UD, but Collazo makes him work
I’ll say that if Berto runs Collazo over — which I can see happening — it’s time for him to challenge an elite welter.

ready for the fight
just got done watching The Verdict on demand (great movie if u haven’t seen it)…now ready for some boxing. I think Berto wins but I hardly have a lot of faith in him…he’s hasn’t overly impressed me anytime I’ve seen him fight.

most of us do
It was a good fight that could have easily gone the other way with a slightly different Margarito. Or maybe it couldn’t have. Who knows? Let’s see it again. (We won’t.)

In short, dirty boxing is part of boxing. I think if a referee gets on it, you have to respect his decision to do that (Mayweather-Hatton). But if he doesn’t, live with it.

Berto-Collazo R1
I do worry that Collazo hasn’t fought anyone worth a damn since the Mosley loss two years ago…
Berto showing his hand speed quickly, with Collazo keeping his right hand high. Right to the body by Berto. Collazo is negating Berto’s jab, hoping to make him work off of something else. Berto with a sharp right to the head. LEFT HAND COLLAZO STAGGERS BERTO! Berto ties up and survives. Totally off balance there. Nice shot by Collazo, who’s pressing the action now! Berto is holding onto Collazo’s arms.
Right hand Berto. He doesn’t look hurt. Berto hugs the shit out of Collazo. Berto warned for holding. Maybe he’s more hurt than his face lets on. Big right Berto! And now he’s unloading on Collazo on the ropes, tagging him with combination shots! Well we’ve got a fight.
Collazo with a left, and now he’s walking Berto down for a moment. Collazo tries to take some easy shots during every clinch. Fun first round.
Bob Papa erroneously says that Berto “got dropped.” This first round looked like a higher-skilled version of the Gamboa fight last week.
Berto 10-9, close round

Berto-Collazo R2
Lederman gave the first to Collazo.
They’re both pawing with their lead hands, like a couple of cats sparring. Collazo’s combo looks slow in comparison to Berto’s stuff, but he does land a body left. Collazo with a slick little left to the chin. Berto exhibits his speed again with another combo.
Berto drills Collazo with a left hook at the end of a combo. Collazo is doing a good job defensively, but shots like that are going to find their way in, period. Berto’s just too fast to block everything he does. Another nice couple of shots from Berto, a right and a left. Berto with another right, and he looks to add on. Collazo maybe caught off balance a bit right near the bell. Definitely a Berto round, but Collazo is making him earn it. He’s not GIVING him anything.
Berto 10-9
Berto 20-18

Berto-Collazo R3
Collazo comes out throwing, but Berto defends it all and fires back. Collazo with a couple of stiff shots. Berto might have gotten a little hurt there, too. Berto warned again for holding.
Berto with shots to the body, and now they’re digging in close. Berto and Collazo are both throwing shots with intent. They’re THROWING NOW! The crowd is alive as these two are letting it fly on the ropes! Collazo is really pressing the hell out of Berto. Collazo throwing inside, Berto mixing up with him.
Collazo is throwing great shots to the body and this is really something to behold. Berto is very much a Mosley — he’s so eager to brawl if it starts popping off.
Berto throwing, Collazo throwing almost on his heels. These two came to fight. Collazo is sort of pulling a Nate Campbell against Juan Diaz in there. He’s giving this young man a FIGHT. Collazo eats a right hand after a left of his own, and makes a face to tell Berto to bring it on.
Gents, I am loving this one.
Collazo 10-9, great round for him

Berto-Collazo R4
Collazo throwing again, and I’ll tell you, Berto is having his mettle tested. Very much so. Collazo is putting some fear into him, walking him down, and making him fight where he doesn’t want to. Berto isn’t doing badly. His speed is obvious, but I think he’s a little thrown off by Collazo’s eagerness to war.
This round is slower than the third, and Collazo is still making Berto fight where he doesn’t want to. And now Berto has a point taken away for holding. He’s been warned twice, it’s fair.
Berto throwing bombs now, and Collazo throwing back. Berto misses a big right.
Collazo 10-9
Berto -1 for holding
Collazo 38-37

Berto-Collazo R5
Collazo’s mouthpiece comes out 17 seconds into the round. Berto, like a gentleman, stopped and let it go.
Berto with a nice little combo, though the three shots brushed instead of landing square. Berto looks a bit confused as to what to do. Collazo has taken his jab from him, he’s making him fire combos in the wrong situations, and when they mix it up, Collazo is beating him. Berto has no rhythm in there. This just isn’t his type of fight. Collazo is deservedly the ‘dog tonight, and he’s fighting about as perfectly as he can.
Luis blocks a combo, then throws a few but misses the big left. Not many punches landing this round (11-7 Berto). Berto with a shot to the body.
Much better round for Andre as he seems to perhaps accept that Luis is going to limit him offensively, so he’d better limit Collazo.
Berto 10-9
47-47

Berto-Collazo R6
Collazo has a little blood from his right ear, and Andre has a small cut on his forehead somewhere I think.
Berto comes out firing this round. Collazo is still good defensively, but he has to play defense when Berto lets his hands go like that. Berto throwing big shots, Collazo doing what he can to avoid, but he’s getting hit here and there. Collazo has a small cut outside of his left eye. Collazo with a little left hand. Berto presses him to the ropes, but Collazo is the only one punching there.
Pretty mean fight, really.
Collazo has lured Berto back into a fight inside, and he’s beating on him with his own back against the ropes. Uppercut Berto, but Collazo eats that well. Another uppercut thrown, Collazo backs down that time. Collazo finishes the round with a flurry. Half-and-half round, but I liked what Collazo did a little more. He peppered the body, took Berto out of his game again, and brought him back into a bad area. Berto did out-land him.
Collazo 10-9
Collazo 57-56

Berto-Collazo R7
Hurrld has it 58-55 for Luis.
Berto throwing again, and Collazo again is snaking around a lot of it and just staying out of the wheelhouse. Berto with a couple of hard shots.
BOB!!! BERTO DID NOT GET KNOCKED DOWN IN ROUND ONE. WAKE THE FUCK UP.
Max points out Berto’s left eye, which is swelling. Berto is backed down and Collazo is daring him to fight it seems. This sort of posturing makes sense, kinda. But then Berto hits him a few times while Colazo stands there with his arms at his sides. Still, Berto isn’t doing a whole lot with the invitation.
Berto 10-9
66-66

Berto-Collazo R8
Hurrld gave the last round to Collazo. I guess, man. He’s got it 68-64 for Luis. And now Lennox will regale us with stories of his fights.
Collazo, frankly, might be tired. The first two minutes of this round are Berto like the last round, working against a guy that seems to be taking a breather or fighting really stupidly, one of the two. Collazo has REALLY slowed down. It also has something to do with Berto moving constantly. Berto is all over Collazo near the end of the round, snapping his head back and rocking him!
Yyyyeeaaaah, I think Collazo is running on empty.

Berto-Collazo R9
Kellerman compares this to Calzaghe-Kessler. Eh, kinda. Kessler didn’t run out of gas.
Collazo is uhhh…yeah he’s leaning into Berto’s moderate holding now and trying to buy another point deduction. Now they mix it up a bit, Collazo throwing some leather finally. Couple of really nice lefts landed. Collazo with a sneaky combo that shakes Berto up a little. Now they’re tied up inside and scrapping again.
Berto sits in the pocket, and Collazo takes the momentum again. This is one hell of an interesting fight. Berto is looking again like he’s losing the fight. Collazo is throwing like a madman this round, short shots to the body and the head, and he’s wearing Berto down.
Berto with a right, and here they GO! Collazo is tagging Berto with nicely-timed shots, and fuck, this fight is back into gear. Wow.
Collazo 10-9

Berto-Collazo R10
I can’t tell you how these final three rounds will go. That’s when a fight is really good. Hurrld has it 87-83 for Collazo.
The fight is fast and hard in close quarters again, which means Collazo is winning the fight. Berto is doing OK in there with that stuff, but Collazo is better at that than he is. Collazo is winging shots constantly, and he’s beating on Berto. Stiff right hook from Collazo, and Berto fires back with thumping shots! Jesus this is good stuff.
Berto’s head is getting rocked around because he’s trying like hell to protect his body. Luis’ activity is bedeviling Berto. Still, Collazo has to be worried about tiring himself out for the final two rounds. Collazo has thrown 103 power punches this round.
Berto’s tired, too. He just fell down from a slight push.
Uppercut from Berto. Bell sounds. Collazo threw 112 punches that round.
Collazo 10-9
Collazo 95-94

Berto-Collazo R11
Collazo comes out with a right hook, Berto stands his ground. Berto needs to find some answers and fast. If the judges are closer to Lederman’s card than mine (and you never know either way), he’s in real trouble.
Back-and-forth “Luis!” “Berto!” chants.
Berto is still getting himself into the inside fight. He’s not…I dunno. He’s not all there. Collazo has beaten him tactically without question. Whether or not that’s enough (Berto has outlanded Collazo) is another story.
Berto with hard hooks to the body. Still a round to be decided with 40 seconds left. Berto with a great flurry, including a right that stings Collazo. That’s going to seal the round for him.
Berto 10-9
104-104

Berto's dad tells him he needs a KO to win
Of course he’d be better served shutting up and letting the corner talk to him but hey. The corners are intense as hell. This is great.

are you on facebook?
Does the fact a boxer doesn't switch weight divisions during their career detract from their overall P4P ranking?
Cos I'd take Hagler over most heavies in history, P4P, and also over "6 weight world champion" Oscar De La Hoya, and Marvellous Marvin never really messed about with his weight, did he?

Berto-Collazo R12
Berto with a big shot, Collazo goes back to the body. Berto charging with a BIG right, and he’s throwing HUGE shots. Uppercuts, straight rights, big bombs. Collazo sticks to his plan and fires to the body. Collazo does look tired. If a big shot knocks him down, he’s in serious trouble.
Big uppercut rips in, but just glances Collazo! Another one misses. Berto is throwing bombs. Period. Collazo is moving forward, throwing as much as he can. Collazo is getting hit and standing up to it. He’s got some chin.
Berto is fighting this round like a champion. Even if you think he’s losing, give him that.
Collazo’s hurt, and falls down tired. He’s out of gas to an insane degree. Uppercut to the body Berto, and he charges again! Collazo’s just trying to stay up. Goddamn this is a great 12th round.
10 seconds to go!
And it’s over. Great fight. Tough to score. We’ll see.
Berto 10-9

BERTO-COLLAZO OFFICIAL SCORES
116-111

114-113
ANDRE BERTO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
That 116-111 Berto card seems a little…off. The other two are basically exactly what I had.

But I don’t think any of those guys are going to be available for him to fight any time soon. Maybe Clottey.

He’s really rugged and would try to do a lot of what Collazo did tonight, make Berto fight inside.

But does say “there’s no way in hell” it was 116-111 for Berto. He says it should’ve been 114-113 all the way.

Collazo was a lot classier than I would have been after undoubtedly feeling like he got screwed again (I think it could have gone either way — but if you’re Collazo you’ve got to be thinking “when is it going to go my way?!?”)

Great Fight...
….Bad Math. 116-111 deserves a look at the judges card. Honestly, this was too close a fight to call it a robbery, but funkiness was in effect on that card.
I had Letterman’s card, for the first time in a long time… not that I’m proud of that.
