Update on Margarito and the handwraps
Lance Pugmire also touched on the Margarito handwrap situation, with the following:
Margarito has more to worry about than how to rebound from the Mosley loss. Before the bout, his original hand wraps were removed and Mosley's attorney said "flecks of a substance" that appeared to be like plaster of Paris were found on pads wrapped atop his fist. His hands were re-wrapped, and the contents of the original wraps and the "flecks" were secured in a box.
The California State Athletic Commission will begin "investigating" the contents of Margarito's hand wraps Monday in Sacramento, commission official William Douglas said Sunday.
That should mean we'll hear more sometime this week, maybe next week. I am genuinely dreading what comes out of the investigation of the wraps, and if it's bad news, Margarito's career is in real jeopardy.

If it is what we think it is… he can be arrested for conspiracy, committing an unlawful act, use of a deadly weapon if he has used it before in other fights, fraud, etc.
It pisses me off to no end. Boxing is a great sport when two men/women stand toe to toe and try to prove to each other that I am better than you. It isn’t a sport when you have loaded gloves. A person life is exponentially in greater danger when you cheat.
In my personal opinion, he should be banned from fighting in the US if indeed the material is plaster. He should be removed from the record books and pay back his purses. I am serious. It is unacceptable.

eh
I can’t remove him from the record books. They can further investigate and find out what fights might have been off the level and maybe change them to NCs with cooperation from the other SACs, but that’s down the road still too.
"I was trying to rob him. And he took my gun from me. And the gun was full of blanks. And he shot a blank into my eye. And now I cannot see from this eye ever again, the doctors say."

Thanks SC. That is what I meant to say.
If I was outraged by the piss poor refing of Wright and Cortez, I don’t know what word I could use to describe if this is true.

I agree 100%
If the substance is confirmed to be dangerous not only would it be an unforgivable act on the part of anyone involved, but also a dark light would be cast on a number of things (past fights, commissions, etc.)
I really hope none of this turns out to be as bad as it seems right now, not only for the sake of Margarito, but boxing as a sport.
I know there’s a lot of questions yet to be answered, but with all that’s going on it’s hard not to think of Margarito’s comments toward De La Hoya when he “cowardly” took a fight against an all but doomed Pacquiao.

I watched the Cotto fight
and thought, ‘Cotto will never be the same fighter’ after this fight. The beating he took in that fight, for the style that Cotto operates, substantially and permanently altered him.
Now, if Margo used plaster before, he likely used it in that fight. It will be difficult to prove that he’s done it before, but I don’t think that will prevent Athletic Commissions, and me, from disregarding the result in that fight.
But what does that do for Cotto? He still took that beating, that certainly career altering, and perhaps life altering, beating.
If Margo had cast hands in the fight with Cotto, difficult as it would be to prove without someone from Margo’s camp coming forward, I hope people serve time. And, I hope Cotto sues Margo. IF(big if), Cotto suffered a felony aggravated assault which he did not in any way consent to.
I want to hear what Brick says on this whole mess

It's a shame
It really pisses me off that someone would try cheating this way in this day and age, and if this turns out to be plaster, I hope he and his corner all get banned for life.
As for whether or not it’s a crime, they would need proof of some kind that he had the plaster on in that fight for there to be a case. Illegal wraps absolutely is a felony (aggravated battery), but they need to have proof ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ that he used plaster wraps in the Cotto fight to prosecute him. Civilly, he could try to make a case, and the legal standard is lower (“preponderance of the evidence” for a civil suit – which is why OJ’s not in jail but has to pay almost every penny he makes to the Goldmans), but I doubt there’s enough to establish a pattern here. Also, I’m not a litigator, but I think using the illegal wraps in this fight might be inadmissible to use as evidence. I have to imagine the wraps Margo used in the Cotto fight are long gone at this point.
Also, he probably won’t be criminally prosecuted for having the illegal wraps before the fight. You could get him for attempted aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit a felony I suppose, but most DAs don’t like to waste resources on cases like that.
Vogt early, Vogt often.

Check mosley too
I don’t believe Margarito would cheat, also y not check Mosley for steroids. No one has beat Margarito like that since he started his career.
That fight reminded me of Oscar pacquiao fight, they both looked weak and didn’t throw punches. Mosley is a great fighter but he did cheat against De la hoya.
Cotto beat Mosley, Margarito beat Cotto and Mosley beat Margarito that’s boxing, his career isn’t over. HE WILL BE CHAMPION AGAIN!!!!

1. Why? It’s a legitimate question, I’m not being a wiseacre. A lot of cool athletes have cheated in every sport.
2. They have. There are post-fight drug tests in every single fight. Don’t fret.

Yeah… every sanctioning organization now piss tests everyone after the fight after what happened with Pryor/Arguello fight where they failed to drug test Pryor.

Margarito will be a champion again
The fight reminded me of what I saw in December, Oscar vs Pacquiao. Just like Mosley bounced back from Cotto loss, Margarito will bounce back and be Champion again. He should get his remach with Cotto and he will destroy Cotto again.

What I don't understand?
When the fight is over. There are always two official right next to the boxer. One on the left and one on the right. When each glove is taken off, one is handed to one and one is handed to the other. As far as the wraping goes it all seems as if the boxer stays with it until he leaves the canvas. But wouldn’t there be somekind of substance found on the inside of the glove alone?
Watching Manny Pacquiao fight live--great...
Watching Manny Pacquiao shadow boxing on the roof of an abandoned building--priceless

Wow
Margarito could have had bricks in his gloves and it wouldn’t have matter on saturday he was just out gunned. Cotto hits no where near as hard as mosely he should that on Saturday, Cotto didn’t even hurt Margarito and he landed more clean shots. As far as the illegal hand wrap go’ s at least wait to they finish the investigation to start judging the guy. Cotto didn’t really beat Mosely they landed the same number of punches but Mosely landed more power shots and Cotto landed more jabs . They just didn’t want to mess up Cotto’s perfect record with a decision but Margarito took care of that . Mosely vs Cotto 2 , Will be a great fight!

Doesn't need to cheat
Margarito has no need to cheat, however Cotto did beat Mosley and Margarito beat Cotto and destroyed him too, something that Mosley couldn’t do. Mosley beat Margo bad.
Evajelista said he didn’t notice nothing when Margo fought Cotto so everyone needs to stop making excuses, Margarito beat Cotto plain and simple.
Y doesn’t everyone make a big deal about Mosley when he fought De La Hoya, he took steroids and he was caught, let’s wait and see what happens on the investigation.
Margarito and Cotto fight was already planned for July win or loose and he deserves the fight.

Margarito has no need to cheat
Ah, OK. Case dismissed.
Technically Mosley didn’t take steroids, but I won’t try to bend your brain around that one.

All of those three deserve a remach
Cotto,Mosley and Margarito deserve to fight each other one more time. All of them are great fighters. Mosley won plain and simple and Margo had a bad night.

this I agree with
I’d be happy to see any of those fights again.

Should throw them all in the ring at the same time and let them sort it out between themselves.

Floyd
I would alsi like to see PBF fight Mosley,Margarito or Cotto but I think it won’t happen because Floyd is scared. I think Mosley vs Floyd or Mragarito vs Floyd would sell out, what do you think of Berto vs Margarito??
by ralph1123 on Jan 26, 2009 8:33 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Berto gets destroyed.
If Margarito is cleared, that is. He is one of my favourite fighters, so I fervently hope he is innocent of what he is being accused of. That said, if he is guilty, then I hope he is caught, and I hope he gets banned. (Then made to fight Fedor to the death, bare-knuckled….)
Does the fact a boxer doesn't switch weight divisions during their career detract from their overall P4P ranking?
Cos I'd take Hagler over most heavies in history, P4P, and also over "6 weight world champion" Oscar De La Hoya, and Marvellous Marvin never really messed about with his weight, did he?
