Hatton-Pacquiao done for May 2 in Vegas

Article-0-02ead153000005dc-237_468x573_medium Article-0-02b8e401000005dc-985_468x651_medium

World junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton will face Manny Pacquiao on May 2 in Las Vegas, with both fighters having agreed to terms and location. The only thing left to be decided is whether the fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena or the dreadful Thomas & Mack Center.

Lance Pugmire of the L.A. Times is reporting the most interesting piece of news, though, which is that it's not exactly a definite that HBO will be the network providing the pay-per-view home for what is 2009's first huge money fight. Bob Arum says there will be serious negotiations with Showtime, whose relationship with CBS could provide network television pre-fight hype, perhaps with something similar to HBO's "24/7" series.

While an interesting idea -- and a good one -- I frankly don't see any way HBO lets this get away. Their budget is such that they can blow Showtime out of the water on a firm money offer, and HBO prides themselves on offering these massive fights. I'd love to see Showtime get in there and work something out with CBS, because it'd be nothing but good for the fight, but I can't see it happening.

Showtime on their sister

If their sister assist them thoroughly, I can’t see why not.

But I’ve read a lot of specs. for the fight to be in Dubai. Even Bob has been debating on it because of the large Filipino population there. But what do I care, I’m going to enjoy it at the comfort of my home for merely fractions of a penny.

Watching Manny Pacquiao fight live--great...
Watching Manny Pacquiao shadow boxing on the roof of an abandoned building--priceless

Arum's just trying to negotiate a bigger site fee for Vegas

Saying he’ll have it in Dubai is blowing smoke out of his ass. He couldn’t even get a minor card (Donaire-Hussain) to come off in Dubai without having to cancel. Their Pinoy population doesn’t mean anything either. It’s not like they’re the ones with the money to buy tickets.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Cool, I’m glad this is (mostly) all worked out. This should be a great fight, whoever wins (although I’d love to see Ricky take it).
