Bad Left Hook Fight Previews for all four bouts
CompuBox Preview for Lopez-Mtagwa
My picks:
Juan Manuel Lopez TKO-5 Rogers Mtagwa
Yuriorkis Gamboa TKO-3 Whyber Garcia
Monte Barrett TKO-9 Odlanier Solis (I don't know if I actually think this, but Solis has come in at 271 pounds and that's absurd for someone with his frame)
Pawel Wolak SD-10 Carlos Nascimento
I know this doesn't seem like the most competitive show on paper, but it should be filled with action, and that's something. Lopez-Mtagwa could be an absolute war, as Mtagwa is outgunned but never lacks in guts. Gamboa-Garcia should be a steamrolling. Solis-Barrett could be a decent heavyweight scrap. And Wolak-Nascimento has "show-stealer" written all over it.

Yeah, I’d agree. I mean it still wouldn’t be great, but this show does kick the shit out of the Cotto-Pacquiao undercard. Santos-Foreman will be SPECTACULAR, I hear. Thanks Bob.

Wolak-Nascimento R1
Mixing it up inside right away, both going to the body. Wolak has a short reach at 154 (68") and wants to be inside and that’s it. Wolak with a lead right, blocked, and now Nascimento with a left to the body. And another, then one upstairs. This is gonna be a phone booth scrap. Wolak pushing Nascimento around right now, digging away and making Nascimento move back constantly. Some combination work from Wolak as Nascimento is trapped on the ropes, but Carlos fights his way out of it and gets back to center ring. Wolak with a right hand, backing Nascimento, and now Wolak is pressing!
Carlos has a cut by his right eye, and I think he indicated that there was a headbutt from Wolak a few moments ago. Wolak just constantly working, Nascimento firing back and trying to get some range, but he can’t do it. Wolak is all over him with the pressure. Good first round, pretty clear for Wolak.
Wolak 10-9

Wolak-Nascimento R2
The cut has been officially ruled a clash of heads.
Wolak is just going to town on the inside, working both the body and the head, and just plain outlanding. Nascimento is busy, too, but he’s not getting the same work done. Wolak cuts off a right upstairs after landing some good shots to the body. Nascimento firing back. Left hook to the body by Wolak. Wolak back to the body, Nascimento counter-punching back. Nascimento finds some range and goes to work, but Wolak comes right back with a right hand upstairs and more good body shots. These guys are doing nothing but punching in there. This is a lot of fun.
Right at the bell, Wolak lands a HARD right hand on the button.
Wolak 10-9

Wolak-Nascimento R3
Wolak back to work immediately. His workrate is awesome. He’s not the biggest puncher, but he just keeps going. Very Energizer Bunny-ish. Nascimento trying to use the jab to establish distance, but it’s not working at all. They both threw 98 punches in round two.
Carlos with an uppercut, but then he’s backed down by Wolak, who starts flurrying, pushes him to the ropes, and they both land some good wild shots, Nascimento probably getting the better of the exchange. Nascimento misses a right, Wolak makes him pay for it. Left hook by Nascimento is really wide. I think Nascimento is probably going to gas at some point, he’s getting quite sloppy and playing right into Wolak’s hands.
Wolak back to the body, then a chopping right upstairs. Nascimento trapped again, but bulls his way out of the corner and lands a right to the body. Right now, this fight is pretty much all Wolak.
Wolak 10-9

Wolak-Nascimento R4
Nascimento storming out this round, and Wolak is right there to meet him. Nasci is really throwing from the heels on his left hooks now, and there’s a big right from Wolak! Nascimento could be in trouble. He’s leaning low, grabbing on, and trying to get his bearings back. Wolak keeps battering Nascimento. Nasci to the body three times, but Wolak just keeps coming forward. Nice shots from Nascimento, but there’s not a ton on the shots, and Wolak is a rugged dude. Wolak firing on all cylinders now! Just winging shots against the ropes. Nascimento is gassed and he knows it. He came out this round looking to stun Wolak, failed, and it’s getting really one-sided. Wolak is hammering away.
About a minute left in the roudn. HARD right by Wolak! He even moved a little and made Nascimento miss a couple shots. Nasimento takes a right, falls, and it’s ruled a slip. Their legs got tangled a little, so fair call. Now Wolak puts it on him with about 20 seconds left! Huge shots landing at will! Nascimento holding on, Wolak putting the pressure on! Nascimento makes it out of the round!
Wolak 10-9

Wolak-Nascimento R5
Wolak with another stinging right, as Nascimento again comes out fast but finds himself getting hit anyway. Nascimento is now putting himself on the ropes almost out of habit. Short right by Nasci, no response from Wolak other than he keeps punching. BIG RIGHT BY WOLAK! Nascimento in trouble for sure! Two minutes left in the round! ANOTHER right stuns Nascimento! This dude can take a shot, too. Jesus.
Nascimento with a left to the body as he slows it down. That cut is really juicing now, and he’s starting to hold on inside. Right Wolak, and another, and another. Wolak should start picking his spots here, which is what Marquez is talking about now. Left hook, barely lands, nothing on it, and Nascimento hits the canvas. He’s on terrible legs. It’s a knockdown, but he’ll fight on.
Nascimento chasing now, putting himself in awful positions, and Wolak just lets him throw meaningless punches. Wolak coming right back now. 10 seconds left. Right hands and lefts from Wolak. Nascimento gets out of the round, but it’s questionable whether he’ll come back out.
Wolak 10-8
Wolak 50-44

Barrett says he “had an inkling” this fight was going to happen a couple weeks before he was announced as the replacement, and was in training. He’s in really great shape, so we’ll see what he’s got left. I’m rooting for him just because Odlanier Solis, who is an awesome talent, has simply shown no desire to be disciplined or take his career that seriously.

At least Barrett usually comes to fight. Even against Haye, he was a live body. The little I’ve seen of Solis, he’s done little for me. This is really a tossup fight. Other than reputation, I don’t see why Solis is an 8-1 favorite.

Solis-Barrett R1
Barrett bouncing around the outside, flicking his jab. Solis misses a lunging right hand. Right hand by Solis is blocked. Jab to the body by Solis, jab upstairs by Barrett. Barrett moving all around the ring, staying outside, and he kind of seems afraid to get hit. He’s flinching a lot. Right hand by Solis. Solis is putting nothing together, just sort of throwing a punch here and there, then he feigns and Monte freaks out and flicks a jab and gets on his bike. I don’t care for how this looks so far.
Barrett uncorks a counter right that misses. Solis is loading up his right and not landing it because he’s so slow coming in. Left to the body by Solis. Right hand upstairs by Solis. Monte did pretty much nothing this round.
Solis 10-9

Solis-Barrett R2
Barrett keeps trying to do these duck back and then lunge in shots, hoping to catch Solis off-guard, but he’s not doing anything but putting himself in bad spots to get hit, or at least he might if Solis could — OH BOY BIG HOOK AND DOWN GOES MONTE BARRETT! Flat on his BACK! He’s up at 8.
He’ll continue. He might should reconsider. Two minutes left in the round. Solis swinging for the finish now. Barrett is out of it, flailing around, almost falling on his ass. Solis swinging for the fences. Big right clips Barrett and shakes him! Monte’s done. Down he goes on a slip trying to duck on the ropes. This is pretty terrible now. Solis with rights and a heavy jab, and Barrett goes down again! Fight is stopped.
That was a disaster.

I’m not sure Monte’s gonna answer the phone too many more times. He probably shouldn’t, either, and any rub he had left to give probably went down the drain tonight. He got dropped on a really wide, slow left hook that clipped him, and essentially finished him. He’s done.

He has a spot. Hit him there, and he’s out. Haye’s just too wild with his punches to really take advantage. Solis looks kind of wild, but is MUCH more accurate than Haye.

Gamboa-Garcia R1
Garcia charging at Gamboa, but the first 90 seconds of the round are really uneventful. Gamboa is biding his time. Garcia staying outside, very far away. Left hook Gamboa clips Garcia. Both guys are starting very slow. Gamboa comes forward with a 1-2, and it’s blocked. Garcia hit just after, but not clean. Left hook to the body by Gamboa. Gamboa charges hard at the end of the round, and wins it on late activity and landing a few shots.

Gamboa-Garcia R2
Gamboa with a big right hand, and now he’s lighting it up with a lot of lightning left hooks. Garcia still staying very far away, which is probably smart. Garcia landed 2 of 20 in the first round.
Gamboa showing off his speed but not landing a whole lot. Garcia is doing all he can to keep this fight very slow. I don’t know what he thinks that will accomplish, because he’s still badly and clearly losing the rounds, but maybe he just wants to not be KO #14, I dunno. Maybe he’s comfortable with that.

Gradeja looks pretty impressive
Looked like a Mexican Yuri Foreman until a 1-2 hurt Diaz, then pounced all over him and got really aggressive, knocking him down twice, but the ref missed one of them. It’s usually hard to tell much in 1 round , but Gradeja looks pretty good. Proved he could both box on the outside and bang on the inside.

Gamboa-Garcia R3
Hard counter right by Gamboa as Garcia opens himself up offensively just a bit. That seems to have somewhat deterred Garcia from continuing to look for openings. Gamboa with another sharp right hand, but then he admires his work and walks around the ring, almost struts. If he felt like it, he could crush Garcia right out of this fight. Garcia with a short right. Now Gamboa is coming in with cocky left hooks, that are met by shoulders from Garcia. Gamboa is doing more pumping his hands at a safe distance than he is hitting Garcia, who lands another quick little right. Really not much of a fight at all thus far.
Gamboa 10-9
Gamboa 30-27

Lopez-Mtagwa R1
Right hook, and Mtagwa’s glove touches the mat, but Cotton calls it a slip. Big “Juanma” chant. Right hook by Lopez. Left hand by Lopez. Right hook by Lopez. Three shots by Lopez. Right ook Lopez, left to the body lands, he’s picking Mtagwa apart. And there he hurts him with a shot. Lopez is ten classes higher than Mtagwa.
Right hook, left hand, and two more shots graze by Lopez. Right hook, left hand, Mtagwa is getting picked apart. He’s just walking right into everything Lopez throws. Left hand just misses. Right hook, and Mtagwa goes down on another slip. Well, he survives the round. That’s the nicest thing you can say.

Lopez-Mtagwa R2
Lopez isn’t getting hit, he’s potshotting, he’s landing power shots, and he’s just so much better than Mtagwa that this is substandard sparring early on. Lopez lands a straight left. Lopez getting pressed now, as Mtagwa is flat out flying at him, so at least there’s that. If you’re going out, go out guns blazing. Left hand by Lopez, partially blocked. Now a left to the body. Right hook Mtagwa, but a THUDDING right from Lopez. Four punch combo by Lopez. Mtagwa is gunning his right hand out there this round, doing much better, not that that means he’s doing well. Big right hook by Lopez, and Mtagwa comes back with a left hook. And another one right at the bell! Woof. Mtagwa showing up now.
Lopez 10-9

Lopez-Mtagwa R3
More hooks and lefts by Lopez, and there’s a HUGE left. Jesus, Mtagwa just keeps coming. Right by Mtagwa! HERE THEY GO! Mtagwa firing, Lopez firing, IT’S ALL OUT WAR NOW! Lopez takes a huge shot, and THIS IS ABSOLUTE BATTLE! ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! Mtagwa landing, Lopez landing, both guys just ripping shots. This is fantastic.
Mtagwa pulling Lopez by his arm all the way across the ring, and out of that Lopez lands a huge left, and then a big right by Mtagwa! Oh man! Mtagwa firing everything he’s got! Lopez taking shots in bunches, and he’s cut! Oh man, this just picked way the hell up. They war it out until the bell!
GREAT comeback round for Mtagwa, who baited Lopez into his fight.

Lopez-Mtagwa R4
Clash of heads caused Lopez’s cut. Mtagwa is REALLY leading with his head, so it’s hardly a surprise.
Mtagwa with big shots, and ANOTHER BRAWL BREAKS OUT! Big left by Lopez! Mtagwa takes a couple more big shots. I think he’s probably wearing out. BIG lefts and rights by Lopez as Mtagwa tries to land to the body. Raul Marquez just said he got splattered with blood. Lopez retreats after a big flurry by Mtagwa!
Right to the body by Mtagwa. Lopez with a short left hand, now some wild shots to back Mtagwa off. Left hook from Mtagwa misses.

Lopez-Mtagwa R5
Mtagwa comes out throwing huge right hands, not landing anything. Lopez has grimaced a couple times in the last two rounds, not sure from what. Lopez swinging and not landing. He’s letting himself fight sloppy. Straight left by Lopez just after I say that. Right hook from JML, but Mtagwa keeps coming, and now they’re calling a knockdown against Mtagwa. He’s fine and will fight on. Looked like a short punch might have just caught him off balance. Couldn’t really tell.
Mtagwa storms right back at him, bullying him inside, throwing wild, wide shots. Left by Lopez, and now Mtagwa fires back with a big right! Hook from Mtagwa! Right and left inside from Mtagwa. Mtagwa dodges some shots, and tries to land some power shots. BIG right hook by Lopez. Good Lord, Mtagwa just will not back off.
With the KD, it’s a 10-8, but it wasn’t TOO wide.

Round 1
It’s official folks, Vasquez is back. the other dude starts off by backing off and throwing out some jabs. somewhat working fo rthe most part, izzy hasn’t be able to do much but its early in the first round after a year+ break so no worries. they exchange a little on the inside, and the dude lands a good straight right. izzy starting to land with the right hook to the body first then another to the head. the other dude is pretty game so far though not gonna lay down for izzy. the othe guy is landing some good shots on vasquez and i gotta say that round went to him

Lopez-Mtagwa R6
This is now the longest any fight has gone on the TV portion of the card.
Mtagwa with a right, but it comes after a good first minute of controlled work by Lopez. Right hand to the collarbone by Mtagwa. Lopez is moving and keeping the fight his way much better this round, which makes for a more boring fight, but is definitely what favors him. He probably beats Mtagwa no matter how they fight, but this is the far better option for him. Sloppy action in the center of the ring. Mtagwa opens up near the bell, but not enough this round.

Round 2
2nd round starts while fox sports en espanol was airing a shitty commercial. ok anyway vasquez is much more acticve this round, but this dude is still hanging in there. monster right from both men, and they are trading some good shots. for a tune-up fight for marquez IV this isn’t gonna be easy. Priolo’s shots aren’t that straight and he’s still hitting vasquez with ease. they are trading on the inside, and izzy lands a big right. priolo is still trading though, and frankly i’m a bit worried. if vasquez wants marquez next he’s going to be in trouble

Lopez leading the action to start this round, throwing heavy shots, some of which land, but Mtagwa is playing decent D. Now Mtagwa starts throwing his own lead shots. Left hand Lopez. BIG RIGHTS BY MTAGWA! Two of them landed hard. Left hook by Lopez. Juanma is fighting weird now. Lopez eats a HUGE right hand! Oh man — oh man. Rogers Mtagwa is landing hard and clean this round.
Left hook by Mtagwa lands. He doesn’t have a lot on that punch, but he caught him clean with it. BIG RIGHT MTAGWA AGAIN! These are coming during vicious back-and-forth flurries, just wild action. This was a GREAT round for Rogers Mtagwa. He ends it with ANOTHER big right.

Lopez with a right hook. Mtagwa just swung the biggest, longest overhand right you’ll see. Missed by a mile, too. Right hand Mtaga! LEFT MTAGWA! HUGE RIGHT HOOK LOPEZ! Wow This is some brawl.
Man, Mtagwa is really starting to mess up the plans a little bit. He’s putting on effective pressure, doesn’t look like he’s tiring, and has made Lopez fight his fight. Big shot by Mtagwa, but Lopez fires back with huge shots! Mtagwa may be in trouble! THEY TRADE ON THE ROPES AND MTAGWA LANDS A MASSIVE RIGHT HAND! HERE THEY GO AT CENTER RING! Another good first minute for Mtagwa, and there’s a BIG RIGHT MTAGWA! LOPEZ IS HURT! Oh man. This is some brawl. Left to the body by Lopez. Lopez throwing REALLY slow, really weak punches. I think he’s tired as all hell. Lopez warned for a low shot.
Oh man, something might be happening in this fight.
Right hook Lopez. And another lands. Mtagwa looks much fresher than Lopez does. I mean he’s looking totally spent offensively. He hasn’t dented Mtagwa and he’s thrown everything he’s got.
Lopez leading the action again. BIG LEFT BY LOPEZ SHAKES MTAGWA! Mtagwa throws a bit late again. That’s a hard round to score, but I think overall Lopez landed more good shots. He’s not looking great though.

Izzy going off to straight the round, but Priolo has gotten back to his comfort zone walking around. priolo lands a great right that seemed to have staggered izzy for a while, but he fell into priolo and came out fine. Lopez-Mtagwa R10
It starts fast this round. Both guys are coming right at one another, fighting a little dirty, fighting hard, throwing nothing but power shots. This is some hell of a brawl.
Lopez complains about a low blow, then lands his own. Hey, whatever. Both guys have slowed down some after the opening minute, and right when I say that, Lopez opens up with some good shots. Mtagwa might be saving something, but Lopez has also gone back to fighting at distance, using the ring, and coming in with quicker shots, then getting out. HERE THEY GO AGAIN THOUGH! MTAGWA WITH BIG SHOTS! Lopez stuck between the top two ropes. Some GREAT shots in there for Mtagwa. Lopez just keeps getting baited, and again he looks far more tired than Rogers does.
Right by Mtagwa grazes. Lopez with a STIFF straight left. HUGE SHOTS FROM BOTH! My GOD! Just FLUSH shots! HUGE BOMBS! LOPEZ REELING! MTAGWA STORMS BACK, BUT HE SLIPS! Oh man, Lopez was striaght stuck in the corner when Mtagwa slipped coming to him. Rogers steals the round.

Crowd chanting Vasquez, and i think izzy’s left eye is starting to look bad. ref rules it from a clash of heads. could be bad since priolo seems to be landing his right hand at will. izzy seeming to feel the pressure from having a cut is trying ot make it a bar room brawl. he’s not really landing much at this point but he’s still going to try and get in there. kind of hard to pay attention to this fight and read SC’s thrilling RBR. apparently there’s a cut that the ref ruled from a punch. this is bad for izzy

Round 8
crowd is booing, and the round break seems to be taking a while. doctor and ref both say that izzy can continue, but there is a cut there above his left eye. both priolo and vasquez are fighting with more urgency. priolo seems to want that technical KO, and vasquez seems to know he’s in trouble. right staggers priolo a bit but priolo throws some punches while izzy leans in. god damn i’m not even paying attention to this since apparently mtagwa beat the shit out of lopez. it looks like a better round for vasquez but priolo is still the man dominating the action. not sure who to give it to, but …
10-9 Priolo
79-74 Priolo
i haven’t been paying close attention so this fight could very well be closer than this.

LOPEZ-MTAGWA OFFICIAL DECISION
116-116
114-113
115-111
JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ VIA MAJORITY DECISION
Still WBO 122-pound titleholder
OK, look, the 116-116 card is indefensible. I mean GTFO with that. 116-116? Ridiculous.

It does mean that it would ahve been a draw without the KD.

suddenly he doesnt look unstoppable anymore
That was certainly not what they had planned going into that one.
Lopez should take a long lay off to recover after a fight like that. That was a very draining fight

Mtagwa is one tough hombre, but to be fair, so is Lopez. Mtagwa can punch, had him reeling, and Lopez stayed up. That’s a lot of spirit. Some fight.

Just for measure he flurries on him while he’s leaning on the ropes Priolo’s legs are done. aizzy comes back and loads on him PPRIOLO tryign to fight back but he’s still not doing all that great vasuqez is bombing on him, and priolo take sa knee. ref stops it FUCKIGN IZZY IS BACK PEOPLEEEEEEEE

YES!
Not happy that it doesn’t sound like he was too impressive at all, but he was damn rusty I’m sure, so just glad he won. Hope he felt stronger as it went along.

yeah he was doing a lot better after the miserable first couple of rounds, and the cut seemed to energize him. he should definitely take some more tune up fights, before taking on marquez or any other tough S.O.B.

Mtagwa wants a rematch
He will never get close to a rematch, which is a shame, but there’s no way Top Rank sends JML out there with Mtagwa again.

Arum says there’s not going to be a rematch. Just flat out says there won’t be a rematch and the fight wasn’t close. Now he’s whining that the referee missed knockdowns. Crowd is booing Arum.

ok thank god
the 116-116 card was incorrect, which I hoped — it was 116-111 for Lopez, so a UD.

No rematch but good experience for Lopez in that fight.
His 1st 12 rounder. ope he wasn’t damaged much by that, those shots could’ve killed a lesser boxer.

Mtagwa would probably fight Lopez on HBO for free. If HBO is really about making the best fights, then make the best fights. No one wants to see Rojas or Luevano but Bob Arum. Make the best fights. This was the best fight I’ve seen since Vazquez Marquez III. Why not do it again?

I don’t think Lopez is that good of a boxer. He’s got power, and he’s fundamentally solid, but he’s not the least bit slick. He’s defensively very average.
