Froch, Dirrell talking smack through the final days

Froch_dirrell_super_six_medium Hey, nobody ever said Carl Froch or Andre Dirrell were modest. In fact, when this fight was put together as one of the first three, I thought to myself this would surely be the most entertaining lead-in. And it has been.

It appears the two won't stop talking until the bell sounds to begin round one on Saturday in Nottingham.

Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO) had a press release sent out that talked some of the most ridiculous trash you'll hear, and I mean that in a good and bad way. I'm not saying Andre Dirrell isn't clever or anything, but just forgive me if it doesn't sound like he actually said the following things at any point in his life:

  • "Froch is going to discover on October 17 that his new world really is flat -- flat on his back."
  • "I'm going to expose him like a 'Page 3' pinup in The Sun."
  • "I've had my best training camp ever and I'm ready to shiver Froch's timbers from stem to stern."
  • "I'm going to slam Froch from both sides of the plate. I'm going to go Mickey Mantle on him! Remember this: Carl Froch can kiss my Yankee Doodle!"

Is that not just painfully obvious that it came from a PR person? Besides a quick reference to inheriting Joe Calzaghe's throne, that's all the release has him saying. It's just one horrible one-liner after another. If I were Dirrell, I'd actually consider being mad about how corny this makes me look.

But it's all in good fun.

As for Froch, he's slightly more to-the-point and serious:

"My hooks will break his body and his heart and finally shut him up. ... I'm not fighting old bums or washed-up nobodies like a lot of British world champions have done in the past."

Dirrell pipes in with this comment:

"Carl has not fought anybody, he's just beat up a bunch of drunk Englishmen."

Which is of course wildly untrue, as Froch hasn't fought a drunk Englishman since he beat Robin Reid in 2007.

This is gonna be a good scrap. It's speed and skill v. power and heart on paper. We'll see if Froch can keep up with Dirrell, and we'll see if Dirrell can survive his first genuine test.

Ugh Dirrell

Ok first off Froch is from Nottingham, also where Robin Hood is from. Put the two together! It’s ‘Carl Hood’ begs from the rich and beats up the poor! No one actually wants to see him fight just his ‘way out of his league’ gf! Have a guy in green tights prance around the press conferences with boxing gloves on. This is a really easy gimmick people, c’mon!

hahaha

As an aside, Froch’s lady really is quite a beauty.

From one point of view, yes. DiBella really cracked me up during that show, though.

Those 'Dirrell' quotes are gold

In an utterly horrendous way. “I’m ready to shiver Froch’s timbers” – what?! That’s so irrelevant, it’s almost brilliance.

I also like his dismissal of Froch’s past opponents, when it’s Dirrell’s record that leaves all of the questions. Froch is a known quantity at this point, it’s Dirrell that has to prove himself at this level; if he’s half as good as he thinks he is, he will win, but he has no track record of wading into those deep waters with a barracuda like Froch (© Teddy Atlas)

No wonder they had to make stuff up for Dirrell

…he’s down to ’he’s just beat up a bunch of drunk Englishmen’?! Their back and forth has been fun though, Carl Froch really can talk and talk. And talk….

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘’Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'’ (Bernard Hopkins)
