Winky Wright planning December return in Puerto Rico
Damien Ramirez, an adviser to Winky Wright, told Primera Hora that the aging star is looking to return to the ring on December 11 in Puerto Rico.
Ramirez cited Wright's relationship with ex-opponent Felix Trinidad and his fond feelings for the island as reasons he wanted to make his return down there. Wright (51-5-1, 25 KO) was routed by Paul Williams in April, breaking a 21-month inactive streak following his 2007 loss to Bernard Hopkins.
No opponents are being discussed publicly yet, and frankly, I'll believe this when I see it. Wright has had lots of plans to fight smaller bouts here, there or somewhere in between in recent times, and none have gone through. He was supposedly going to fight on the Versus Network last December, for example, which didn't happen.
Wright turns 38 on November 26, and his last frankly his last really significant win came in 2005 against Trinidad. Since then he's beaten Sam Soliman and a blown-up Ike Quartey, fought to a draw with Jermain Taylor, and lost to Hopkins and Williams. His style needs the right opponent, especially now, and he's never become a money player.
There's still definitely a spot in the sport for Winky, and he's too good defensively to ever dip down to gatekeeper, and hell, he could even win a title again if he landed a fight with Felix Sturm or Sebastian Sylvester or someone, but until Winky's actually in the ring, reserve doubts.
