Abraham, Froch betting favorites for Saturday

Undefeated European stars Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch have home field advantages on Saturday, when the two kick off the Super Six World Boxing Classic in Germany and England, and they are also the favorites in the sports books.

The Bodog book has Abraham as a -250 favorite over American Jermain Taylor (+190), and Froch at a slimmer -140 against Andre Dirrell (+110).

Abraham (30-0, 24 KO) will be on his adopted home court of Berlin against Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KO), while Froch (25-0, 20 KO) will have his hometown of Nottingham out to root him on against Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO). Both fights are also expected to go the distance, with over/unders at 11 1/2 rounds in both bouts.

As we start inching closer to the fights, I am getting closer and closer to finally making a call. Both of these are hard fights to pick, and it seems the only person anyone is actually sure about is Abraham. Froch-Dirrell has been a 50-50 call among the opinions I've read, and many feel that Taylor has a really good shot at upsetting Abraham, but the people picking Abraham are largely calling it as a no-brainer. I do think they're off there. Jermain is by far Abraham's best opponent to date.

Actually, I'm getting closer to making up my mind on Abraham-Taylor, but not so much Froch-Dirrell. That one puzzles me, and frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way. Every time I get close to saying, "Yeah, I think I like Froch's power and resolve," or, "Yeah, I think I like Dirrell's speed," I start changing my mind. I don't even remember the last time I was this undecided about a fight five days away.

Anyone care to explain American betting odds to me?
I understand 2/1, 20/1, 4/6 etc, I’ve never understood the +150 thing!

It’s the same deal, just differently “worded”…with numbers:

To win $100 on Abraham (-250), you have to bet $250
A $100 bet on Taylor (+190) nets you $290 total, counting the $100 you put down

And it scales up and down for how much or little you wager, of course.

The Haye-Valuev thing? Just watched it. What a bizarre waste of time for everyone involved.

I presume you got the same impression I did, that it WASN’T Valuev, and that it was put on?

I found it most interesting that nobody laughed. It felt like a bunch of reporters going, “Why the fuck are we here?”

JT via KO 9
Froch via KO 11 (and he’ll be ahead on the scorecards :) )

JT via KO? I’d have a punt against that! AA by KO after the terrifically skilled, but awfully conditions JT gasses.

Froch – Direll is impossible for me to call. Froch couldn’t be anymore “european” in his style, and he’s a sitting duck for a slickster… but then I said that before the Pascal fight. And the JT fight thinking about it….

Either way it can’t really be a bad fight can it?

JT-AA should be a hell of a good fight. Froch-Dirrell could stink if Dirrell decides to make it stink.

Taylor by KO is the one outcome I don't see happening

On Froch-Dirrell, I’ve gone back and forth a hundred times, and I’ve settled on Froch by late TKO, with Dirrell having a very good chance at pulling off the upset.

Funny

Taylor by “Decision” is the one outcome I don’t see happening, more based on the venue then anything else. I think the reason we’re all having trouble with Froch-Dirrell is that it very clearly a pick’em fight.

If Taylor can't win by decision because of the venue

and he can’t win by knockout because of Abraham’s tight guard and titanium (literally) chin, then I guess that one’s a pretty easy fight to call.

Based on what Elvin Ayala was able to do to Abraham, I do think Taylor has a shot at winning the decision. Imagine someone longer, quicker and stronger than Ayala fighting the same fight; I think Ayala would have won the majority of the rounds if his punches weren’t all feathery. Of course, I suspect the result will end up being pretty much identical – Taylor will gas out late and get knocked out cold.

You think Dirrell can keep Froch off for 12 rounds? I reckon he can keep him off for a few, but Froch will get to him at some point.

Still think he’s massively, massively vulnerable though. A Dirrell stoppage wouldn’t shock me.

Yeah, I pretty much agree Scott, though I feel a bit more clarity on Froch vs. Dirrell. I’m sticking with my original pick: Dirrell by a surprisingly easy UD. I admit that Froch is something of a wildcard, and his power and heart could prove me wrong, but I think odds are Dirrell finds a way to endure and outpoint Froch in a not-so-entertaining bout.

Taylor vs. Abraham has me pretty tied up, and in a perfect world, with perfect judges, the fight is even harder to call. But this is a big hometown crowd with (I’m predicting) Texas-style hometown judges. I’m predicting that I personally award the fight to Taylor—as will the majority in the live thread—but the judges will see it otherwise and give it to Abraham. I also predict this will be Abraham’s only win in the super six.

No way Abraham beats Froch, IMO

Abraham to win by late stoppage. Don’t rate Taylor’s chances very much with his stamina issues, coupled with the fight taking place in Germany.

Froch and Dirrell is definately alot harder to predict. I was thinking Dirrell to win on points but now favouring Froch by KO. Massive jump up in class of opponent for Dirrell.

My tactic of picking the nicer guy to win the fight leads me to pick Dirrell and Abraham. Froch is a bit of a tit but the other fight was much harder to pick. Taylor seems like a genuine and friendly guy but so does Abraham and he was pretty funny in that Showtime 360 thing.

Seriously I reckon Froch gets beaten and Taylor doesn’t run out of gas and manages to overcome Abraham.

i think the only thing that isn’t stacked in Froch’s favour is the speed, and it’s not as though Dirrell is lighning quick, don’t get me wrong he’s quick, its more the fact that Froch makes a snail look quick.

i still think Froch can get a late knockout, he just has much more experience and has a proven heart and chin

Abraham by late rd TKO and Dirrell by SD. Andre is going to become a little more well known after this one. There’s a reason he’s called the “Matrix”. Gonna be hitting from all angles and when he lets those hands go, watch the handspeed!!
