PrintJust in case you were ever wondering, Bernard Hopkins shared his highly intelligent feelings on mixed martial arts with BoxingScene.com:
"Everybody is different. I don't want to watch two grown men wrestling with panties on. I'm from the hood, we don't play that. To me, I'm not buying a ticket to watch two grown men with panties on, sweating, nuts in their face. That's not me. To compare that to boxing is ludicrous. It's a porno. It's an entertainment porno. I'm not wrestling a guy with panties on and his nuts in my face, and they call that a sport.
"I'm not criticizing people for what kind of entertainment they like. I think most of those people have chains and masks in their closets. There is something out there for everybody. I can understand if 90% of women were going to those things but I can't understand a grown man sitting there with a couple of guys watching two grown men with panties on, sweating. That's just my opinion. It's not a good look."

Here’s the thing that really annoys the piss out of me about comments like this from fighters: If you read countless boxing forums online, the fanbase is overflowing with homophobic, racist, misogynistic crap. It’s one of the reasons I wanted to start this site, and one of the reasons it’s so strictly moderated. I don’t even want to partake in most boxing forums because of this rampant ignorance, and I don’t think we need Bernard Hopkins piling on from his pedestal.

he raises a few interesting, but not new, points about the ‘gay’ appearance of an MMA fight (cue the pic of the two jiu jitsu guys and the line: ’it’s only gay if you’re facing each other’).
It’s just some talk, he’s just throwing it out there because he’s a professional lightning rod. I don’t think B-Hop believes MMA fighters/viewers are gay, he’s just talking. And as Jrok said, this is nothing new. I’ve seen the Jiu Jitsu joke referenced on BE, B-Hop’s just putting his ‘hood’ spin on it.

Hop turns on the professionalism when he needs to
He was incredibly professional and respectful, for example, in his promotions of the Pavlik and Tito fights. A lot of this stuff is just regular jive talk/soundbyte stuff. It’s not at all serious and no better or worse than what Dana White says on a regular basis. He’s just preaching to a choir of casual fans so they can feel “pride” in their sport and (hopefully) watch it more.

Bernard Hopkins may actually be stupid in many ways. He’s smarter than he should be, considering he never graduated high school, but sometimes his judgment is just horrible, and he isn’t always the most eloquent guy in the world.

Like many in his generation, my grandfather didn’t graduate high school, and he is still one of the smartest bastards I’ve ever met. Intelligence and education aren’t the same thing.
I thought it was pretty smart luring Kelly Pavlik up to 170lbs, knowing how green he was and seeing how his power had diminished even at 164. Hopkins outsmarted Pavlik, Loew, Arum, the betting community and the vast majority of analysts, bloggers and talking heads. Smart move.

Does he say stupid shit outside the ring? yes and we’ve known this for a while. Jrok and I got into it pretty good about his race-baiting a few weeks ago. But I respect his professionalism more than any other boxer for his preparation, game-planning, attempt to execute that game-plan, and his greatness as a stylistic boxer.

Yeah, I mean that is the literal meaning of “The Executioner” nickname… not that he is “killing guys in there” or anything like that. He is probably the finest example in this generation of a fighter who can break down a style from tape and then form and execute his gameplan. He’s never really been much of a puncher, a boxer or a brawler. He’s a strategy-guy who relies on his brains.

That was one of the things that was so great about listening to Nard call a fight live. You could basically hear the gears turning in real time, and you got a window into the way he really studies styles and fighters and breaks them down. It was a HUGE relief from having to listen to Big George stumble his way through brilliant observations like “He’s got to try to punch him more.”

Why does it always have to be an either/or thing? I like boxing. I like MMA. I like kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, folk/Greco-Roman wrestling. I also like tennis and chess. I just like mano a mano competition. I don’t like people who hide as part of a team. Why can’t we have respect between competitors and fans of both sports.
