My Picks For Tonight
Abraham by late KO/TKO (around round 8-12)
Froch by KO/TKO (can happen anytime)
Dirrell is Overhyped i think
Bute or Green should have taken his spot
My first Froch-Dirrell prediction was Froch by dec but after the weigh ins yesterday,i think Froch is gonna finish him now.
Abraham by TKO-11
Froch by UD

Part of me still can’t believe something this awesome is actually happening. What a great idea this tournament is.
(The cynic in me also wants to remark, “Can’t wait to see who screws it up!”)

Boxing is the beginning of all sports. I'm willing to bet that the first sport was a man against another man in a fight. (Omar Epps)
Yes!
Showtime basically has turned a big page in the sport with this, and so have all these six guys who signed on. Very good for Boxing.

Germany is who I really have my eye on. It’s not just because it’s an American in there either. I’ve seen plenty of Euros robbed in Germany too. Hell I’ve seen GERMANS robbed in Germany.

can anyone tell me when the actual fights take place…. and as im in england could u please say it as….
froch 2 hours from now….. taylor 3 or whatever they are… cheerz
The show goes live in the States in about 3 1/2 hours, which means Froch will probably go on at 9pm or so here, which would be 4 1/2 hours from now. I do not know when Abraham-Taylor is ACTUALLY live, as it’s airing on delay in the States and I’m completely avoiding any boxing news sites right now so that the result isn’t spoiled for me.

I just ordered Showtime for this event… for just this month…

I am going to keep it as long as there are significant fights and cancel if there is a lull. I mean in the grand scale of things… I look at it like this… 14.99 for just 2 or so hours is not bad. I am giving myself a min wage entertainment with the Showtime… but I also get 30 plus channels as well.

Well
It does seem a little unfair since there is so much Euro interest. But Showtime put up the cash, so it’s only fair to them to run their standard schedule, you know?

Watching on stream
Steve Albert (I think) and Steve Farhood doing Taylor/Abraham and Gus Johnson and Al Berenstein should be handling the events in Nottingham.

Only if Gus and Al are doing it in a studio in the States, because Gus has NFL commitments tomorrow.

Eventually they are gonna have to create an option where you literally just pay a la carte for exactly what you want to see. What do I care if “Kate and Leopold” is playing on some cable channel at 2am? Make it all Pay Per View.

I mean, if they could make the prices market-based, so that total demand brings down the prices on individual content. I don’t watch a ton of TV other than a few movies a week and sports, so it would probably slash my monthly cable bills in half or more.

Hey Scott, don’t ban me for this but I was at Yankees-Angels Game 1 last night, and CC pitched a gem of a game. It was just a beauty of a game, given the conditions. He was throwing a 96 MPH fastball in the eighth inning. Good stuff.

Twins – tiny market, great farm system and two world series. They do it right.

Taylor easy R1
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
Abraham-Taylor R1
Abraham comes out with his guard high, Taylor snapping a jab at him. Overhand right from Taylor misses. Double jab, all this is blocked by Arthur. 1-2 from Taylor is blocked. Another double jab blocked. Arthur is just standing at center ring, letting Taylor work and not throwing. There’s a jab to the body by Abraham. Right hand swing by Taylor misses again, jab to the body by JT. Left hook blocked by JT. Jab sneaks through for Taylor, and now Abraham fires some heavy artillery, a wide right seems to get Taylor a bit nervy. JT with a right to the body. Left hook from Abraham misses high. Three-punch combo from JT, all blocked again. Jab by Abraham, Taylor misses his counters. Two shots to the body by Taylor. Overhand right gets closer for JT, but still misses. Taylor outworked Abraham easily here, but Arthur’s defense controlled the round entirely.
Abraham 10-9

I gave Abraham the round as well

Abraham-Taylor R2
I realize I’ll be in the minority scoring R1 for AA, but Taylor landed nothing of note and was just shut down. But you can say he worked and won it, and that’s totally fair.
Taylor keeps pumping that jab. And now Arthur’s complaining of a low blow on a body combination from Taylor. And it was CLEARLY low on the replay. I mean CLEARLY low. Arthur takes a quick break.
Taylor just keeps working the jab as AA stays in his shell. He seems to be breaking the guard just a little, and there’s a right and a left hook combo from JT. Taylor strays low again. Taylor misses a left hook, and Abraham shoots a shot up through Jermain’s gloves, but Taylor takes it well. And here comes Abraham with a flurry! Taylor thinks there was a shot to the back of the head.
Taylor 10-9

Abraham-Taylor R3
Hey, Nikolai Valuev is here. BFD.
Jermain eats some body shots from Abraham. Arthur seems to have no fear of Taylor, this is early for him to step on the gas even a little bit. Taylor goes back to pumping that jab, which isn’t landing but keeps him busy. Jermain keeps throwing that wide right hand, hasn’t landed it yet. Abraham misses his own wild right. Right hand from Abraham taps Taylor’s dome. Right again by Abraham. Jermain getting testy as Abraham keeps making it a rought fight. This is getting a little edgy. Mikkel Kessler is here.

Abraham-Taylor R4
Taylor comes out storming. He’s pissed, man. Right to the body by Taylor, and Abraham complains AGAIN. That one didn’t look low on first glance. Taylor keeps working that jab, now he’s throwing out a 1-2, getting the right hand involved. Abraham chasing and getting crowd reactions, but now JT is starting to land a few more clean shots, which DOES push his activity into more of what I think he wants to do — and should be doing. Uppercut blocked. Abraham is shelling up really effectively. Abraham lands a quick jab, but JT just resets. Taylor looks like he’s tightening up a bit, too, which is bad news for JT fans. And they get a bit chippy at the end again, but then touch gloves.

Abraham-Taylor R5
Right and left to the body by Abraham, but nothing clean. Taylor to the body, then a right to the head. Abraham starting to pressure and crowd Taylor. Now Abraham swings some, landing a shot or two there. Long right by Abraham lands. Abraham taking this round handily with a minute left. Jab from JT. Taylor is definitely getting out of the loose comfort zone he had going early. THEY TRADE WILD SWINGS! And then it calms back down. Neither guy seems terribly excited to engage with big shots. There’s a right by Abraham. And a follow-up misses. Great round for Arthur.

October 11th, 2009: The day Justin Forsett became loved by Seahawks fans forever.
bad break for JT
he can’t afford to lose points like that
Abraham-Taylor R6
Abraham throws a hard right, and a hard left, neither getting home all the way. Taylor’s jab has lost zip, getting kind of pitty-patty and almost like he’s purposely aiming for the gloves just to keep distance. Arthur goes back into the shell. Right to the body by Abraham follows a jab. Taylor swings two to the body again, and Abraham AGAIN complains. They’re taking a point. Those didn’t look low either.
-1 point to Taylor
Ugh. Abraham working just a bit, and Taylor again is warned for going to the body. They’ve essentially taken the body away from Jermain Taylor. This is ridiculous. Long right by Abraham, and Jermain looks like he doesn’t quite know what to do now. I can hardly blame him, honestly.
Abraham with another right, this one a counter, and now he’s swinging for the fences. Not connecting, but JT looks like he might be tiring, too. Bell sounds. We might be at a turning point.
Replay shows it was a low blow — so what can you do, I guess?

Abraham-Taylor R7
Abraham to the body, then a short left hook upstairs, not hard but lands. This is starting to really go Arthur’s way. Taylor throws a nice uppercut but just misses it. That could’ve been a momentum-turning shot. Abraham starting to just outmuscle Taylor, and now we’ll see what Jermain has in the tank. Taylor starts pumping the jab again, but there’s just not much on it and he’s not landing anything else at all. Great body shots by Abraham, and he lands upstairs too. He’s a lot stronger than Jermain. The heads collide quite hard, Garcia warns Abraham for it.
Short left hook for Jermain, but Abraham fires back with big shots. And now he’s getting in Taylor’s head. Jermain is getting pressed, and a left hook lands! Taylor felt that one for sure. Big round for AA again. This is slipping away. Jermain’s in trouble.

Abraham-Taylor R8
There’s a sneaky counter right by Taylor, goes a little too high. That one seems to have gotten Abraham to think for a moment at the least. Abraham gets the guard back up. Abraham dropping his hands now on the outside, just waiting for an opening it seems. Taylor keeps flicking his jab out. He’s got to open up offensively. I mean he just has to. He is not going to win this fight if he doesn’t, the best score I can see right now is even with Abraham having all the momentum in the fight.
Jermain misses a right badly. Abraham with a charge, some blocked but scoring shots do get through, especially a left hook to the body. Right just misses by Abraham, Taylor’s counter misses too. Closer round, but another one for Arthur for me.

Abraham-Taylor R10
That right that shook Taylor definitely had some forearm/elbow on it.
Taylor working the jab again for the first minute and change, and Abraham is back in the shell. Abraham swings wide shots, doesn’t land. Abraham takes a right that just misses connecting hard. Abraham springs in with a flurry, but Taylor defends most of that if not all of it. Right blocked by Taylor. Abraham keeps getting the crowd to rise and the pressure is nice, but Taylor is playing good D too. And honestly Taylor looks like he might be fresher at this point.

Showtime is focusing too much on the zoom in on Abraham’s ass — show the punches, for God’s sake. Taylor now outworking him again, and that right hand sneaks past the gloves. Abraham’s guard is just a bit looser than it was early on. Abraham firing now, and there are four or five hard shots to the body in the corner. With a minute left, that could have turned the round. That hole in Abraham’s crotch keeps getting bigger, too. This bastard might have to fight the 12th in his skivvies.
Abraham with more big shots that push Taylor back. I think Abraham stole this round in the last minute and if the official cards are close to mine — and I can easily see the closer scores other folks here have, too — then this is about insurmountable.
Abraham 10-9
Abraham 107-101

Abraham-Taylor R12
JT has to know he’s on hostile ground, and that he needs something big this round. I mean he just has to.
Right to the body by Taylor, AA whines, Lupe Garcia effectively tells him to shut up. And Jermain isn’t fighting with any urgency. He didn’t gas, I’ll give him that, but he’s not fighting like he needs this win, or like he thinks he might be behind. Abraham keeping the guard up, picking off the jabs, and there’s a body shot from Arthur. Right hand Arthur, and they start throwing the bombs! Jermain threw back, got away, and then considered fighting on. TWO LEFT HOOKS BY ABRAHAM SHAKE TAYLOR! Abraham with a right! Abraham IS pressing and fighting with urgency. There’s just a difference in philosophy between these two guys. Simple as that.
Taylor comes f DOWN GOES TAYLOR! AND HE IS OUT COLD! HE IS OUT COLD!
THAT’S IT!

Taylor
Knocked down Froch and Pavlik. Couldn’t finish them. He got knocked out both times. Lost to Pavlik but he wasn’t bad there.
Got destroyed by Abraham in the final two rounds.
No sense of finishing power or endurance, he can’t contend ever again.
Also that 12th round was shameful. Jab, occasional hook, then loss. He needed a KO and couldn’t be bothered to try and show up for the last round on offense. Same thing over and over again.

Milk dud!
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
If Taylor could have figured how to use his right hand
he might have won. Seriously, jab jab jab jab. I’m taken rudimentary boxing classes and they tell you even at that level is you build off your jab. Your jab gets you in, keeps them away, and opens up hooks and uppercuts.
And the uppercut! Seriously, it was there all night with that peekaboo. Abraham wasn’t jabbing at all consistently. There were ways for him to get through AA’s guard, but didn’t do it! So frustrating to watch.
But a guy like Froch or Kessler can really take advantage of that.
AA’s defense is nasty. Keeps his elbows so close, makes himself pretty damn narrow. He’s just tough to hit when he wants to be.

Not a robbery
But when you’re fighting a guy and you’re not allowed to hit his body, you’re screwed. Particularly a guy who protects his head with both hands.
It’d be like playing the Vikings and the officials saying “OK, no more passing! You have to run from here on out.”

Froch-Dirrell R1
Dirrell starts fast with a flicked jab and then a four-punch combo, and Froch doesn’t do much to defend against it. Now they look at each other for a bit. Dirrell in and out with the jab. Jab to the body lands. Froch hasn’t uncorked anything yet. There’s a jab from Froch just as I say that. Froch badly misses a slllllooooowwww left hook. Dirrell with two clipping jabs. Right to the body by Froch. Dirrell goes southpaw, and now Froch starts charging in at Dirrell. Body shot from Froch, and Dirrell acts like it didn’t hurt him at all, but he cringed a little bit. Now he goes back to the right-handed stance. Jab from Dirrell. Lead right by Froch doesn’t get there.

Froch-Dirrell R2
Froch pumps a jab to kick off the second round. Froch coming forward and keeping Dirrell tentative. Dirrell seems totally disinterested in getting into any kind of shootout, which is a really good idea for him. Dirrell staying away, switching back and forth from righty to lefty. Dirrell is definitely not engaging tonight. Froch is missing power shots pretty badly and he got countered hard earlier in this round. This is pretty tactical stuff by DIrrell so far. Good double jab for Dirrell. He’s massively faster than Froch. It’s not even close. And through two rounds he’s giving Froch an awfully hard time.

Froch-Dirrell R3
Froch comes forward from southpaw with some heavy shots, but Froch clinches up. Froch gets a little rough in there. Dirrell with a hard right jab and a left uppercut inside. DIrrell is flat out staying away from Froch, making Carl chase him, and basically taunting him with his speed and some, to be honest, running. But he’s also throwing more and more power shots, and landing good stuff pretty easily because Froch is slow and his defense either sucks or isn’t important to him, take your pick.
Froch with a right, but not a lot on it on the retreating Dirrell, and Dirrell tries a CHECK HOOK CHECK HOOK CHECK HOOK I SAID CHECK HOOK. Dirrell jabbing to the body, but now he’s starting to get bullied a bit, not physically but mentally. Eventually Dirrell is going to back himself somewhere and get pinned there, which is no good for him. But through three he’s owning it.

Froch-Dirrell R4
Froch seems uncharacteristically tentative tonight. I mean it’s just not him so far. Getting outboxed and outquicked by DIrrell is no surprise, but he’s putting on no real pressure. Dirrell with a GREAT combination, and now he’s starting to cook with gas. Dirrell with a bloody nose, though. Froch trying to get to the body with not much by way of results. Froch is SO slow compared to Dirrell, who’s now running around the ring. Right to the body by Froch, but Dirrell comes back with a quick charge, and then he’s back out. Froch with a lead right and a left hook, neither lands clean and Dirrell winds up getting out of the corner.

Froch-Dirrell R5
Nice right hand by Dirrell. He’s way, way, way faster than Froch. I mean just disgustingly faster. Left to the body by Dirrell as he’s switched back southpaw. Good sharp right jab by Dirrell, and then Froch blatantly hiptosses Dirrell. Hey, he might need to get into his head any way he can. Pretty cheap, though.
Froch is badly frustrated, and at this point, visibly so. He cannot catch Andre Dirrell. Froch throws three jabs, none with much on them. Froch trying to get rough inside again. Dirrell with a left to the body, and now Froch hits on the break. Froch is getting pretty chippy. This is blatant — he’s done that twice and tossed him. He can’t do anything with Dirrell and it’s in his head.
DIrrell lands another shot to the body, and takes another round.

Dirrell-Froch R6
Dirrell back to the body with the right hand jab. Froch misses two shots badly again, then Dirrell slips and the crowd gets all excited. HARD lead left to the body from Dirrell. The Brit fans are definitely all about Froch. Froch misses a horrible left “hook” — that was a goddamn swing and a miss and then some. Froch trying to make it a firefight now, he knows he has to. He’s totally out of it. BIG LEFT BY DIRRELL STINGS FROCH!
And the referee has to break them up. This, like the last fight, is chippy as hell. Froch should probably have been docked a point by now. They’re just wrestling around the ring, or else Dirrell is landing snapping shots. Froch being made to look like a second-rate fighter by Dirrell. That’s really what we’re seeing tonight.
Dirrell slips again, or is half-shoved, or something. I can’t really tell. But I think this was a Froch round, honestly, even with the one really good shot by Andre.

Froch-Dirrell R7
Dirrell slipping and countering again to start the round. Chopping counter shots by Dirrell are landing with relative ease. Left hook by Dirrell. Two jabs by Dirrell. Froch misses a left hook in the corner, but at least that had some control on it. Froch misses a lead right. Dirrell misses a lead left, clipping the neck with it. They get a little fiery at center ring, and Dirrell is complaining about something, but Froch is pressing now. Dirrell is definitely holding whenever they get close. Dirrell leaps in trying to hold now. Froch with some potshots inside, and he’s landing while Dirrell complains instead of proecting himself. HUGE LEFT HOOK BY DIRRELL! Froch-Dirrell R9
Froch starting to press, using the jab, establishing it a little. And that jab is working too. Dirrell seems a bit more unsure with that jab working. Dirrell with a sharp left hand. Froch comes in and walks right into a right and a left. And there’s another shot by Dirrell. Froch misses a big right with Andre on the ropes. Froch hits him behind the head baltantly AGAIN, and now he finally gets fucking warned, and the crowd boos. This is back to Dirrell taking Froch to school.
Seriously, this referee is awful, and this is the sort of shit I was worried about. Referees who have no business in fights of this magnitude. He’s proven himself completely unworthy.

I mean what the fuck is this referee doing? What a horrible deduction. Big left by Dirrell! Andre might need to really dominate and open it up here. Two BIG rights by Dirrell. Froch misses a right. and honestly that would be awful because this tournament is supposed to be something that changes the way boxing is perceived. The best fighting the best…etc

Froch-Dirrell R11
Let’s see where Froch’s legs are at. This is Dirrell’s first round 11.
Froch with some pot shots, some to the back of the head again, but Dirrell comes out of it unscathed, using head movement and some counter punching. Froch is just having a horrible time with Dirrell. Two hard lefts by Dirrell! Gus freaks out when Froch really isn’t hurt. Big hook by Froch! Dirrell swinging now. Now they trade, and Dirrell is continually making Froch miss and miss badly. Andre Dirrell is showing natural skills you cannot teach.
And I love Al Bernstein, but I’ve no clue what he’s watching.
Hard chopping left from Dirrell. Froch is getting dominated and getting the crap beaten out of him this round. DIrrell is just tagging away. Dirrell might be tired as they go to the corner, but the bell rings.

What is this robbery shit? Can anyone name an example of a Robbery on British shores? Anything to even slightly match Lewis Holyfield 1?

Froch-Dirrell R12
Dirrell’s trainer told him to go for the KO. Good for him, because I can almost smell a bad decision. The referee’s already been awful, why not the judges?
Froch probably knows he needs to press too. Right hand from Dirrell clips Froch and catches him off guard. Left hook by DIrrell. Froch with an uppercut. Half the round is over, Dirrell controlling.
Dirrell countering everything Froch throws, now comes in with four shots. Froch trying to rally late in the round, and he does a bit. I think he loses the round anyway, though.

Again, I had it 116-111, but just a horrific, horrific hometown decision. Terrible way to start the Super Six.

Dirrell won somewhere between 11 and 9 rounds...
Froch fouled repeatedly, didn’t get a point deduction. Then Dirrell got a point taken for holding or ducking or something. Then they gave a split decision to Froch who was completely ineffective the entire fight.

Fair play to Dirrell, very very mature in his after fight interview. Most fighters would have been crying (ala Paulie).

Froch is an asshole. I wanted Dirrell to win (until the fight started and I saw his tactics for the first 6 rounds).
I do think the fight was closer than most here are calling, but I don’t think Froch won, at all.

Quick Europe Lesson.
No one likes England. It’s a fact. We’re more hated by our neighbours than you lot are in the middle east :P
"Chris Eubank lost his recent comeback fight on points ... the main one being that he's a total git."
home crowd
When you’re in a fighter’s home town the audience gets more excited for their fighter even if he’s swinging and missing. A judge could think the fighter is making contact when they hear the crowd get excited.
In the NBA, home town teams get more foul calls than visiting teams even though the refs are neutral. It’s not because the refs are from the same country.

Judges can be swayed by crowds quite easily. I’m not bashing England, but this was a shit decision.

like Froch say’s although Dirrel out boxed him….. he was also very negative…. moving always on the outside…… never the aggresser……
That’s not how boxing works though – if it was hopkins would be 0-42

Dirrell impressed the hell out of me with his boxing skills. I knew he had them but they’ll clearly give anyone in this tournament trouble. His reflexes are unreal and his punches are really snappy.
He may not be the most exciting guy out there but I really, really enjoyed watching him frustrate Froch that badly. If he was just a tiny bit more assertive he could really damage some of these guys.
