Kenny Bayless named referee for Cotto-Pacquiao, judges also named

Kenny Bayless, one of the best referees in the business today, has been named the in-ring official for the November 14 mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto, reports GMA News.

Bayless was the referee for Pacquiao's knockout of Ricky Hatton in May, and Pacquiao is 3-0 in fights that Bayless referees. It's likely irrelevant, unless you believe in voodoo or the like, but it's a neat little side note. Bayless was also the referee for Cotto's lone career loss against Antonio Margarito in July 2008.

The three ringside judges have also been appointed and named by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Dave Moretti, Duane Ford and Adalaide Byrd will score the fight from ringside. Of the three, Adalaide Byrd has surely taken the most flak in recent years, but all three are experienced, big fight judges.

Bayless would have been pick number one from me, with Jay Nady and Tony Weeks the only other referees that work Vegas I would have considered worthy of this spot. Nevada picked a good man for this hugely important fight.

Best line by a ref in my opinion…

Byrd is a disgrace to judging. And that’s sayin something.

Bayless is brilliant at refereeing so this is a great choice. It’s nice to see the details of this fight are looking good, adds to my optimism about the fight itself.

What are the chances this one even goes to the scorecards?

I think the other way round ;)

Do in-ring officials ever ring-side judge? Can they?

In some places in Europe they are the only judge….not shady at all.

Many of them do both. Pat Russell (the referee for Vazquez-Marquez III) does both in California, the Ritter brothers (Gerald and Gary, if I recall) were involved in every fight one way or the other on that October 2 ShoBox in Oklahoma, etc.

Yes, pretty often

The Italian guy from the Frock-Dirrell fight with the wacky scorecard is usually a referee.

Yay on Bayless. Hopefully Adalaide doesn’t come into play.

The best thing about Bayless being chosen is that he absolutely will not tolerate any dirty tactics from Cotto. I was worried that the fight would be marred with low blows and the like but now that seems very unlikely which is great.
