Bantamweight Business: Hasegawa-Morel, Montiel-Penalosa in talks

Japanese promoters have indicated that a December 18 fight between WBC bantamweight titlist Hozumi Hasegawa and Eric Morel is set, and Gerry Penalosa is saying that he's expecting to land a December 19 fight with WBO titleholder Fernando Montiel.
Hasegawa (27-2, 11 KO) is currently on a monstrous run scoring four straight knockouts within the first two rounds, and has shot up many pound-for-pound lists in the process. Morel (41-2, 21 KO) has been trying for months to land a fight with Montiel to no avail, and though the WBO offered him an eliminator fight with Z Gorres, it appears as though this is the better route for him. Hasegawa certainly offers more money than Gorres, as his fights are all major events in Japan.
Montiel (39-2, 29 KO) escaped with a technical decision draw after three rounds in his last fight against Alejandro Valdez, a fight that initially appeared to be a TKO-3 for Valdez. Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KO) gave up the title Montiel now holds to move up and challenge Juan Manuel Lopez at 122 pounds earlier this year, taking a ridiculous beating. Penalosa is confident he can beat Montiel, and given some of Montiel's recent performances, that seems like a pretty decent bet, even with Penalosa, 37, aging.
It's also nice to imagine that the two fights could lead to a unification between the winning parties, but that's unlikely. I truly do wish there was more incentive for the top Japanese fighters like Hasegawa and Daisuke Naito to leave Japan for big fights, but the money just isn't there as they have no name in America or the UK or anywhere else.

He was convicted of sexual assault of a drunk 15-year old girl back in 2007. He served about two years of jail time and two years of extended supervision and is a registered sex offender.

if Tony Ayala Jr. can come out of a 15-year bid for a home invasion/rape and come out and get a couple of meaningful fights then i see no problem with Morel getting another shot…he’s scum but in boxing he’s on the lower end (Don King killed two guys, Tyson, etc.)

if Tony Ayala Jr. can come out of a 15-year bid for a home invasion/rape and come out and get a couple of meaningful fights then i see no problem with Morel getting another shot…he’s scum but in boxing he’s on the lower end (Don King killed two guys, Tyson, etc.)
There is the vast majority of guys in boxing that don’t break laws or go to prison at all, so I wouldn’t really say he’s on the lower end in boxing just because a few other guys are worse.

On top of the no name issue
Japan only recognizes the WBA and WBC belts, so there’s no incentive to try to unify with anyone who doesn’t hold one of those two belts.
