Clottey-Quintana is off; Arreola-Tua possible

With the Joshua Clottey-Carlos Quintana fight off for December 5, heavyweight slugger David Tua could be in position to capitalize. (Photo via www3.pictures.gi.zimbio.com)

Dan Rafael reports today that with the cancellation of Kelly Pavlik's fight with Paul Williams on December 5, the welterweight clash between Joshua Clottey and Carlos Quintana that was going to be positioned as the co-feature is also down the drain. Williams will keep the December 5 date, but Top Rank (promoters for Pavlik and Clottey) have totally pulled out of the event.

I really feel bad for guys like Joshua Clottey and Carlos Quintana, who were supposed to open the HBO telecast Dec. 5. Now they're out because that was Top Rank's fight, and it won't be involved in a reformulated card. It would be nice to see HBO stick with the fight, but that's not going to happen. Instead, don't be shocked to see the return of heavyweight Cristobal Arreola. And don't be surprised if David Tua faces him. Clottey went from thinking he'd meet Shane Mosley in December (until HBO reneged) to being bumped to an undercard against Quintana to being left with nothing. Quintana was supposed to fight Saturday in Puerto Rico but was taken off the card for the bigger opportunity against Clottey. Now Quintana has nothing, either.

This is something I mentioned yesterday when the cancellation news came down the pipe, that it would be truly unfortunate if Clottey and Quintana got scrapped because of the Pavlik pull-out, and that's the case indeed. It's a good fight -- not a great fight, but a good fight -- and both guys had a strange journey to get there in the first place. Mosley-Clottey was an HBO jerk-around, and Quintana dropped out of a tune-up fight this Saturday in Puerto Rico to take a bigger, more important, and much tougher fight with Clottey. Now they'll both sit around and make no money.

The possibility of Arreola-Tua is somewhat intriguing, though I hesitate to get all excited about a potential war. There's a good shot at an early knockout. Tua can still punch, and Arreola can throw some bombs himself. I almost want to favor Tua because I've been a fan of his for so long and he's a great guy and all that, but I just don't have the rosy memories of David Tua: Mr. Destruction that so many people seem to have. I remember him knocking out some guys, and that John Ruiz crushing, and then having all kinds of trouble when he stepped up in class. Arreola has basically done the same thing, except he's only stepped up once. And I take little from Tua's bashing of Shane Cameron, because Cameron isn't near Arreola's league.

But all that said (and I don't know who I'd pick because it's such a shootout scenario), I guess if I have to watch heavyweights lumber around, I'd at least like to watch the two that throw punches. A loss to Tua could really crush Arreola, though, especially considering losses to Tua usually came at the end of a brutal barrage of punches.

Is it just me or would this fight be determined exactly one second after the met in the middle of the ring? The guy who takes the backward step after they meet each other is done. There is no way either of these guys can win a fight backing up.

Im not too upset about this fight being cancelled, its a battle between two guys who cant get over the hump, whoever wins would be the less of a loser.

Quintana and Clottey have both won titles at 147, beating Paul Williams and Zab Judah. Clottey has been very competitive with Margarito and Cotto, and many felt he beat Cotto. Quintana derailed Joel Julio. What hump do they need to get over? They’re both top ten guys.

That said I’m only disappointed for them because now they’re left in the cold; I actually thought the fight would suck stylistically.

I understand that they are both top ten guys but the best win between the both of them is Quintana’s UD over Paul who got pancaked in the rematch and winning a vacant alphabet strap by defeating Zab is as meaningless as it gets in the WW division,

Not really. Andre Berto won a vacant alphabet strap by beating Miki Rodriguez.

But I get what you’re saying, too.

This should happen No matter what

That would be a good fight for the Heavy weight division. It could be a good redemption fight for Arreola and a good " Welcome Back fight" for Tua. Someone is definitely going to be knocked out.

Yeah he has good reason to call himself “mr unlucky in the welter division”

It would be nice to see Arreola fighting again relatively soon. He’s a great guy and he makes exciting fights, much the same can be said of Tua so this should be fun, fun. Well as fun as two fat men throwing themselves at each other can be.

That original HBO show has taken a hell of a beating. Williams vs Pavlik and Clottey vs Quintana – for double bills, it doesn’t get much better. Whoever Williams fights, it’ll be a comedown. So for me, Arreola vs Tua is a perfect fight to get back some of the excitement that was lost when the original card went under. For sure, HBO cannot let Arreola fight a journeyman. Either Arreola fights Tua or a top 10 HW, or they should get another undercard fight.

I guess this means Goosen is taking over the card

Considering that Goosen’s other big name property is tied up in the Super Six, it’s probably Arreola or bust. Another (less attractive) option would be Edison Miranda. Or, if he can get him to agree to fight at all, Robert Guerrero, who’s officially still with Goosen because he lost a recent lawsuit.

If Goosen has control of it and can’t get a big name, then in the worst case scenario, he’d put Arreola in there with Tony Thompson, Malik Scott or Manuel Quezada, which isn’t ALL bad, or with (God forbid) James Toney.

I’d actually be sorta interested in Arreola vs. Toney. At least as much as those other fights. And fallen though he is, Toney still has more of a name than they do and would draw a better gate.

Tony Thompson could beat Arreola. I don’t think Goosen would risk that. Thompson is old and doesn’t have a third of the potential upside.

so could Toney

Depending on the judges, anyway. Some judges are still in love with Toney’s reputation, or at least that’s the only way I can figure the scoring for him over Fres Oquendo.
