Miranda bounces back with a quick victory
Per Fightnews, Edison Miranda defeated Francisco Sierra via first round knockout. Sierra had a good winning streak going on and a relatively solid beard, only being TKOed once in the 10th round by a solid puncher, Rigoberto Alvarez. This will put Miranda near the top of the WBO rankings (Robert Stieglitz) and probably bump him a little higher up the IBF rankings (Lucian Bute).
Miranda's been looking to get back on track after a recent loss to Andre Ward, as well as generally just not looking nearly as vicious since taking a beating at the hands of Kelly Pavlik a couple years ago. His career started off well, giving Arthur Abraham the closest fight of his career, and outpointing Allan Green, but by losing badly each time he's stepped up in class since then, Miranda has become somewhat of a forgotten man. In order to rebound, he's taken on a new trainer in Joe Goosen, and has signed on with Goosen-Tutor Promotions. This was his first fight with that tandem, and while he wasn't facing the best opposition in the world, reports out of California say that Miranda looked about as good as he has for a long time.
I'm pulling for Miranda here. Yes, he has serious limitations, but anyone with his brand of power can be exciting to watch, and if he can get back to being the vicious machine he was at one time, he could help inject even more excitement into an already very exciting super middleweight division. Furthermore, this win may help create a legitimate challenger to the winner of Lucian Bute-Librado Andrade II, as most of the rest of the IBF top 15 is either not going to leave Europe, tied up with the Super Six, or just not very good.
On the undercard, Manuel Quezada won a close fight over journeyman Nicolai Firtha. Quezada is fourth in line in the WBC rankings to face Vitali Klitschko after knocking out Travis Walker, but this kind of performance makes me think it was somewhat of a fluke. For a point of reference, Firtha was knocked out by Tye Fields his last time out, and has been knocked out early by nobodies twice earlier in his career. On the bright side, Quezada has a 17-fight winning streak, and gives Dan Goosen another Mexican heavyweight to harp on about winning a title.
In other action on Wednesday, Daniel Geale and Anthony Mundine both won in separate bouts on the same card. This should set up a rematch of their highly contested and surprisingly exciting match that Mundine won earlier in the year. It also gives Mundine an excuse to not try facing live bodies for a little while longer. Once upon a time, I had dreams that he could be built into a legitimate opponent for Kelly Pavlik, but that's never going to happen fighting light punchers in Australia.
In Kiev, Vyacheslav Uzelkov notched a fifth round TKO over Tomas "not Tomasz" Adamek. Adamek was being hyped as a prospect for a while, but it's obvious that Uzelkov is the one to watch. He moves to 22-0, which includes a knockout win over current titlist Gabriel Campillo. Seven of his last eight wins have been by knockout, mostly against solid competition. In a weak light heavyweight division, he should be moved quickly towards a title shot. Based on the little video of him that's out there, seems like a good Euro boxer who gets full weight behind his punches and has good killer instinct when he has a guy hurt. He needs a snappy nickname, but I'd be interested in seeing more of him in the future.

I think that Miranda might actually be able to handle Stieglitz, whose one of the weaker titlists. Stieglitz got thrashed by Librado Andrade, who isn’t exactly Mr. Boxer, so I don’t know that Miranda’s iffy technical foundation will hurt him.

I actually thought Andrade-Stieglitz was a pretty competitive fight until the stoppage. I’d pick Stieglitz over Miranda because Miranda isn’t as good as Andrade.

Really?
I don’t think I gave a round to Stieglitz.

There were rounds I thought he boxed pretty well and then rounds where he seemed overwhelmed by Andrade’s pressure. IIRC I had Andrade up, but I thought it was a pretty good fight.

I thought it was a fun fight, but I thought it was one that Andrade seemed pretty well in control of.
