Pavlik blaming pull-out on allergic reaction, saying he was close to death
Read the article, knowing what else you know, and see what you believe. The 'near-death' experience was a while back, but he says he wasn't able to punch anything because of his hand, and he'd already "learned his lesson" by coming in against Hopkins at less than 100%. I'm sure this story has a lot of truth to it, as well as a lot of exaggeration.

I agree
there’s clearly some exaggeration in the language, but I do sympathise with him and believe that its not a total b-s excuse, but I can be pretty gullible anyways, so who knows…
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘’Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'’ (Bernard Hopkins)

Cleveland has some of the best hospitals and doctors in the region but he is beyond stupid that he never took care of himself. So I don’t really sympathize with people who don’t help themselves. There is a ton of hyperbole in that AP just because he doesn’t want to come out like an idiot.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

Alcoholism is a disease too, so if that’s really the explanation it makes him more sympathetic not less.
As it is, I’m totally agnostic about whether to believe either the rumors or Pavlik’s explanations. There’s really no evidence either way. It’s more like a Rorshach that reveals more about our own tendencies than it is anything else.

Yeah if he’s alcoholic then that’s a terrible shame for him and I really hope he can overcome his addiction. However I think any evidence of said alcoholism is rather sketchy so I’m not inclined to believe it.
As far as all the palaver over his hand is concerned, who knows?
