Nate Campbell says he'll sit out his contract with Don King
Nate Campbell sent out a press release that viciously blasted promoter Don King and indicated that the 140-pound contender is willing to sit out his contract rather than fight for King again.
Campbell has never been one to keep his mouth shut on any issue. Watch him go to work:
"Man, look here: F**k Don King. He can’t do s**t, and won't get out of the way. He tried offering me some bulls**t to 'maybe' fight Devon Alexander next year, but he had no date, no site, and no money specified on the contract, AND he wanted an extension.
"He's out of his f***ing mind thinking I'd sign some blank bulls**t like that. He's got me mixed up with someone else. My man Terry [Trekas, Campbell's manager] even tried negotiating a buyout with him for the remaining seven months or so of the contract, and Don wanted more money than he's even paid me since I signed with him back in 2007. So f**k him.
"I can sit, and he won’t get a dime. He thinks it’s a game. He thinks I forgot about the other $100K he still owes me, too. Guess what? I didn't. He just don't get it."
Campbell sitting out the contract would likely turn into an ordeal, but it's been clear for a long time now that Nate wants to break from King's grip. He had intentions to leave King until Joan Guzman not making weight left Campbell bankrupt, at which point he didn't have a lot of options, really. Since he beat Juan Diaz, Campbell has fought a total of two times, once against Ali Funeka and once against Timothy Bradley. His career has been seriously derailed as he's reached what looks like his peak.
Campbell also talked about one of the increasingly familiar complaints about King's promoting these days:
"Ain't nobody wants to work with his ass anyways unless they have to. He can’t get TV dates. And he can't even draw a gate because he sits on his ass until eight days before the show before even deciding where the arena is and put the tickets on sale, and then turns around and blames it on you, saying you can’t draw, and tries to use that to short your money the next time."
This is totally legit. The February Campbell-Funeka card, for instance, was a complete disaster. The main event was supposed to be Ricardo Mayorga-Alfredo Angulo, then Mayorga pulled out on King for the umpteenth time, leaving Campbell-Funeka as the makeshift main event, and they didn't even have a building until the final weeks before the show, and then King had to paper the place, which means there was really no money generated. The only place he seems comfortable promoting anymore is St. Louis, where he can just throw Cory Spinks out at the Scottrade Center and hope it goes well, which is getting increasingly difficult as St. Louis has seemed to turn on Spinks over the years.
I hope if Nate is serious about sitting out his deal with King, he has the money to do it from the Funeka and Bradley fights. Yes, he needs a new promoter. Frankly, everyone with King needs a new promoter, which is a different way of saying Don probably needs to go ahead and retire from promoting fights, because he's just hopelessly outgunned by Golden Boy and Top Rank, and he really doesn't even match what top "secondary" promoters like Lou DiBella do anymore. King's time has long since passed, and he's never going to be a real factor again.

read Larry Holmes: Against the Odds, to hear about some reaaaaal underhanded-ness by Don King. Holmes penned one of the better inside looks at boxing in addition to writing an autobiography, in my opinion.

The funniest thing about this was I remember back when Nate was hitting the message boards after his victory over Diaz. Nate was hilarious and willing to talk to anyone about anything. I remember having an excahnge with him where I said something like “watch you back with those DK mofos, champ” and he replied something like “He’s played me straight so far. If he tries to f**k me, then that’s a different story. But as long as he does right by me we are good.” Yup.

Yeah, he’s a genuine dude and one of my favorite fighters for many reasons.

Count me in the Nate Cambell fan club. Love this guy. Here’s wishing him luck getting out gracefully from under King’s thumb.

Yeah then Diaz accused Campbell of using steroids with no proof other than he got his ass kicked. He’s a real peach.

It was interesting to see a boxer who used the internet the way Campbell did. He really would talk to total strangers and be real about it. He didn’t even freak out when somebody disagreed with him.
Briggs tried something similar, but failed horribly. When you spend most of your public life fronting a lot of horseshit, it is hard to take anything you say seriously. Mostly guys just made fun of him.

King's Stable
Does Spinks or Alexander have the next fight lined up yet? These guys are fairly talented and definitely deserve top-level competition for the next fight, I just King’s ability to make that happen.

We all know Don King’s an asshole!!! Why the fuck would anyone sign with that piece of shit in the first place? I’d sign with anyone over him. Nate ain’t saying anything we didn’t know already.
