The IDEAL Super Six....

Would you keep with the fighters that are there?

Or would you replace some?

Would there be room for Kelly Pavlik?

Would it be better or worse at a different weight?

My personal choices for the SMW Super Six would be;

Mikkel Kessler

Lucian Bute

Carl Froch

Librado Andrade

Arthur Abraham/Sakio Bika

And.... I'll throw this one in for the hell of it;

Bernard Hopkins (since he made 170 for his last fight, I think he could make 168, and he's a better choice than Pavlik, for obvious reasons.)

Ideally

If all things were perfect:

Mikkel Kessler
Lucian Bute
Carl Froch
Kelly Pavlik
Arthur Abraham
Chad Dawson (who CLAIMS he can still make 168)

If Dawson is just blowing smoke about that, then Andrade or Bika would be an ideal candidate.

While I think the Super Six is fantastic, I think an even better format would be an eight-man double-elimination tournament. You’d have the same number of “rounds” (five), while accommodating more fighters. Plus, fluke wins would have less of an impact on the outcome of the tournament as a whole.

So, I would keep the same six fighters and add Bute and Bika.

The problem is that you don't guarantee enough revenue that way

to get people to sign away 2 years of their prime. To get people to do it, you pretty much need to guarantee 3 – 4 big fights for each fighter.

Not sure I understand. I guess two guys would be eliminated after two fights, but you’d still be able to guarantee two big fights for them, which isn’t bad. Plus those two guys wouldn’t have to sign away two years of their primes because they’d be out of the tourney and free to fight whomever after about eight months.

by taco pal on Oct 9, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but they'd be coming off two losses and wouldn't be able to get much money

With 3+ fights, even if the tournament ruins your career, at least you made enough money that you’re set for life.

Hmm. Would it solve the problem if they guaranteed a third fight between the two 0-2 fighters?

Yep!!

No

Because its 2 guys that are both coming off 2 losses. 1 is getting a 3rd and his career is completely over and who cares about the extra fight between 2 losers? (The way the public will view it.) It has to be a major part of the formula and have some level of meaning.

Honestly? While I think Bute and Pavlik certainly make it more star-studded and the stakes a little higher, I like that we have wild cards like Ward and Dirrell here. It gives everything an extra wrinkle.

It's no secret that I've become a Bute fan

So I’d like to see him in there, but oh well.

Who would you drop for Bute? Obviously if this is the best six super middles, Bute (#2 at worst) should be here. I think if I put Bute in for anyone it’d be Andre Ward.

Jermain Taylor would drop out for me.

Then Ward, then Dirrell.

I’d love to see Andrade in there, Bika, Dawson, Hopkins and Pavlik would all be welcome….

Hell, let’s offer Calzaghe big money to come back and really see what’s up!! :)

Calzaghe would only come back

If Carl Froch or Arthur Abraham wins then proceeds to KO Bute. Then there is a big money fight to be made in Europe.

Joe’s having too much fun on Strictly COme Dancing with his partner to come back…clearly not learning anything week on week either

I agree about this. It makes it a more interesting mix of fighters and backgrounds

No Bute for me

Let him Librado and Pavlik fight if they feel like it. I like the way its set up now with the possible addition of Bika if somebody gets injured and can’t live up to the scheduling.

Allan Green is the alternate, Bika is in no man’s land.

Welterweight.

My ideal Super Six would be at welterweight, with the likes of Mayweather, Mosley, Cotto, Berto, Clottey and, prehaps with a special exemption to fight at a catchweight, Pacquiao…

HA!

I did say “perhaps”, didn’t I? ;) Seriously though, say The Pac Man doesn’t participate because of the 147, who would step in to replace him?

I think Manny at about 142/143 would beat everyone in that tournament.

With the possible exception of Floyd....

Or Cotto.

Or Mosley.

In fact, it’d be easier to say, Manny would be, at worst, really competitive in there against anyone in the division.

If you have it as a tournament

Have Manny come in at whatever weight he wants to under 147, but let the others do it at 147 as well.

I personally think a featherweight tournament would be great, and it would be easy to make, since most of the good featherweights are controlled by Bob Arum. I mean, check this:

Yuriorkis Gamboa (Top Rank co-promote)
Juan Manuel Lopez (Top Rank)
Steven Luevano (Top Rank)
Mario Santiago (Top Rank)
Cristobal Cruz (Top Rank)
Jorge Solis (Top Rank)
Bernabe Concepcion (Top Rank)

And if you want to get other promoters involved:
Rafael Marquez (GBP)
Chris John (GBP co-promote)
Daniel Ponce de Leon (GBP)
Israel Vasquez (Sycuan)
Elio Rojas (Don King)

I assume you mean that all the others can come in at 147, which Manny obviously reserves the right to do too, since it’s a welter-weight event and all…

IE- you’re not advocating catchweights either… 142 is still welter after all….

In which case I agree with you unreservedly, and this was the point I tried to make myself. :)

Yes

In an individual fight, fine, negotiate a catchweight, but if it’s a tournament, there shouldn’t be catchweights, period. Come in at the weight where you feel most comfortable, as long as it’s below the limit. At least that’s my opinion on the matter.

That’s where we slightly differ then…

Because I don’t feel that there should be fights made at catchweights, period.

What is the point of having weight classes if people just insist on doing what the hell they like?

(Thats a generic question, more than a dig at you….)

All of this is just sounds like a long of saying “let’s have welterweight fights.” I mean, a 142lb guy versus a 147lb guy has no special distinction. It’s just a standard welterweight fight.

Would have preferred Bute in for either of the Andres, and Chad Dawson if he can actually make 168. I think its a little strange having both Andre’s in as they could both easily do nothing at all, but I definitely think Jermain Taylor’s worth being in there as I would pick him in a Froch rematch (obviously with that conditioning caveat) and he’s fought easily the best opposition
