Pacquiao inching further as favorite in Vegas

Manny Pacquiao has become an increasingly bigger favorite on the Vegas books for Saturday night. (Photo via www.digitaljournal.com)

The Vegas lines for Saturday night's showdown between Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao opened fairly modest, with Pacquiao at -200 (bet $200, win $100) and Cotto a +180 underdog (bet $100, win $180).

But as the fight grows nearer and money piles in for Pacquiao, the line has moved. Pacquiao is right around -240 or -250 on most books, and some books have even put him down at -300 at this point. Cotto has moved to right around +190, and in some cases around +200.

This all doesn't mean much for how the fight will play out, really, but it's certainly worth noting that Pacquiao is the clear favorite in Vegas. For those putting money on this fight out in Nevada, the choice has been made, and it's not a 50-50 toss-up for them.

Your odds are slightly out, aren't they?

Otherwise I’ve always had it wrong.

Shouldn’t it read;
Pacquiao at -200 ( bet $200, win $100 ) and Cotto a +180 underdog (bet $100, win $180)

??

I was just going to say the same thing.

The spread is probably a lot wider than $20 for this one

When you have a contest with lots of people who have very strong opinions about both sides, the casinos will take as large of a spread as they can get away with.

Seems like there’s a lot of value in the Cotto line.

That’s a hell of a bet in a two horse race and one that can be ended in one punch.

I think I’ll bang a few quid on Cotto now.

Sorry this is a bit off topic, but where’s Dana White been this week? I was expecting him to call one his signature press conferences to take a dump on this fight.

Maybe taking a dump on this fight is so hard it’s beyond even him!

That would be something. Just another reason to appreciate Cotto and Pacquiao then – who else could shut that guy up?

Dana’s too busy shitting on Strikeforce and Fedor.

The massive turd Dana dropped on this fight is UFC 105, airing for free on basic cable at the same time.

Its only free on basic because its a pretty shitty card being broadcast from England. The ppv number would be embarrassing.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 10, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Dana knows he can't make money off of the card, so he's giving it away.

No problem, in my opinion. Any chance to watch Couture fight is a good thing, especially if I don’t have to pay for it!

I still think White does more harm than good with his big mouth. Then again, if there’s anything boxing isn’t in short supply of, it’s big mouths.

i've been suckered into watching some HORRIBLE ufc's

And have come to the conclusion the only ones worth watching are the cards they put on in Vegas. The rest of them are usually meh.

There's an element of truth to that, but that's not always the case.

UFC 102 in Portland was actually pretty entertaining. Even with no title bouts, there was some good action throughout.

But it’s clear that the biggest and best cards will always be done in Vegas. So if you’re narrowing it down, that is definitely something to consider.

That was Couture-Nogueira, right? That was a good ass show.

Yes it was.

First UFC ever in my hometown and I couldn’t go. I was less than pleased. At least it was a memorable card. Well, memorable in MMA terms I suppose.

So what is the fundamental question here guys?

(Not that we won’t discuss it further in the coming days). Is it simply Manny’s speed and swarm against Cotto’s power and forcefulness? Can we say that Manny has a defensive edge?

Wear something sexy to my funeral.

Pacquiao's speed...

…and power. I’ve always liked Cotto, and have followed his fights since he was being mooted as a potential future Hatton opponent back in 2003ish (I remember McGuigan saying that Hatton shouldn’t touch him with a bargepole…). However, no matter how good I think Cotto is, I think Pacquiao will be better in every respect* come Saturday night, and will knock him out.

*apart from body punching, and I don’t think it’ll go long enough for that to matter

by FCF on Nov 10, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

It looks like speed vs power.

Obviously Pac plans to outland Cotto and possibly get a decision while Cotto won’t be able to match Pacs handspeed or probably workrate yet will be doing a lot more damage with his punches.

It’s not hard to see Pac winning first few rounds, maybe even first 6 rounds but chances are he will clipped sooner or later or those punches will wear him down eventually.

It’s still hard to call it’s just very hard to give Pac the edge IMO.
