Judah / Casamayor pay-per-view tops 100K in buys

165460_lg_medium_medium American Dream Promotions released a statement indicating that the November 6 pay-per-view featuring the ring returns of former world champions Zab Judah and Joel Casamayor had a pretty strong showing on pay-per-view, cracking 100,000 buys.

Ron Johnson of ADP said, "This just goes to show what happens when you put two champions, Zab Judah and Joel Casamayor on the same card. We are very pleased with the results and will have another show in the near future."

For a reference point, the 2008 fight between Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez did about 100,000 buys. That event was distributed by HBO and promoted and produced by Golden Boy. This was more or less completely independent. American Dream and Super Judah and the other small promoters worked with iNDemand and sold what HBO and Golden Boy sold together a year ago, and with a far less compelling card.

If you've been here any length of time, you know Zab Judah is not exactly my favorite fighter. But this certainly speaks to the idea that people still want to see him. Maybe Judah's one of those guys that doesn't have to win or be relevant or make a great showing for himself. Maybe he just is, you know what I'm saying? I mean, I'm sure Casamayor helped a little bit with the sales of this show, but not a lot. He's never been a major star outside of the boxing cocoon. Judah has stirred up some mainstream coverage before.

All in all, what more can you say besides "job well done"? They sold a far higher amount of PPVs than I figured they would. Frankly if they were being honest with themselves, they probably at least doubled their own expectations. All due respect to the promoters and the fighters. They sold a show that was a step down from your average Friday Night Fights.

It’s really great news that shows like this can do such good business.
It gives guys more options for when the networks pass them up.

If the “you know what I’m saying” was included ironically, kudos.

I’m just gonna come right out and say it: I don’t think this PPV got anywhere near 100,000 buys.

Same here

I think they’re flat out lying.

You actually believe this bullshit?

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."

What incentive is there to lie, really? To convince fans they did a whopping 100K? Most fans don’t get that this would be a really good number, to be honest, as they still think 400K for Marquez-Pacquiao II was some sort of embarrassment. If they use it as part of future fight negotiations for Judah, Zab would have to actually prove it to the other side.

Also, like him or not, Judah has a very loyal fanbase. Throw in the bored / curious / diehard (I qualified for all three) and it’s not a massively unbelievable number or anything, plus boxing is actually sort of hot right now.

More loyal than Chavez?

100k is more than any Latin Fury card has done….

Although I guess to be fair

Latin Fury cards cost $15 more, and are free to anyone who gets Azteca.

What incentive is there to be truthful?

If they lie about it:

- They get more cable companies to carry their next pay per view
- Judah increases his leverage to get another HBO fight

iNDemand has the number (whatever it is) and knows whether or not they’d be interested again.

Since when has 100,000 buys become relevant to question. You can’t be serious, that’s nothing.
That’s equivalent to a section of a metropolitan city.

Maybe I’m missing something here but 100.000 buys on a pay per view event is a flop. I REPEAT.. A FLOP! I’m not sure what the doubt here is about. Where talking about 2000 people from each state (GENERALLY SPEAKING) ordering this fight. that’s nothing! I can’t believe people are questioning that number.

I think it is good partially because of very poor expectations and partly because of the apparently weak reputation of judah. And who outside of Mexico and boxing-fan circles knows who Casa is? I think the result is noteworthy more because of how surprising it is rather than how successful it was.

I doubt even Mexicans know who Casa is

Since he’s Cuban

The reason 100k buys would normally be a flop

Is because of the amount of marketing money that gets put into it. Did you know that the production costs for 24/7 come out of the fight revenues, and that it costs over a million dollars an episode to produce? This fight was barely marketed at all, and had zero production values. With minimal overhead, they probably made $2 million on a couple of fights they might have been paid $75,000 for to air on ESPN. That’s a pretty resounding success.

Maybe I’m missing something here

You are. Incredibly so.

100.000 buys on a pay per view event is a flop. I REPEAT.. A FLOP! I

If it were marketed, hyped, advertised, produced and presented by HBO, then yes. It was not. It’s relative. This was not some major fight with months of hype and press conference. This was a tiny show on independent PPV on a Friday night.

Do you believe that Judahs PPV did more than 100,000 buys?
Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Who told you that? There is NO WAY it that many. NONE. I’m not sure it did 10,000 buys. Maybe they need to move the comma.

I agree with the sentiment that there is no way this is true. I’ll buy any pretty much any pay per view with anybody on it. Not once did I consider buying this trash. If the hardest of hard core fans like populate this site did not buy this ppv, who in the hell did?

by BabyBull1289 on Nov 12, 2009 11:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

how many of u guys actually bought it? i am a little shameful to admit i did … not for zab just to watch boxing and cause casa’s one of my favs fighters of the late 90s 00s …

by boxzilla on Nov 13, 2009 7:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I bought it for the same reason. I was bored, I had nothing to do, and I felt like watching boxing. And even though I’m not a Zab fan, I was interested to see if he and Casa were in shape, how they looked in their comebacks and all that. Of course it’s $25 I’d have rather not spent, but I’ve spent $25 worse in my life.
