Cotto-Pacquiao Weigh-In Live at 6pm ET
Both ESPN and HBO will have live coverage of the 6pm ET weigh-in for Cotto-Pacquiao, and we'll be covering it live if you're stuck at work or the like. Frankly, if I have to abandon that N'dou-Hatton fight, that's what will happen. We WILL give you the weights as they come in, posted in the comments of this entry, updating live with no refreshing necessary for those that have an SB Nation account.
Hopefully this will be less eventful than the Mayweather-Marquez weigh-in, and will lack horrible radio personalities and D.L. Hughley attempting to spice up the proceedings.

Looks like it’ll be fine. N’dou-Hatton fight is leading the Sky broadcast and about to start, so it shouldn’t cut into any of the actual weigh ins.

Boxing isn't huge generally in Japan though
There’s just a culty of personality behind a few of its major boxing stars. The star fighters are bigger than star fighters are in the U.S., but they develop the stars and not the sport over there. Give people the choice, and K1 is much more popular anyway.

How would you all rate Cotto as a counterpuncher? B? B+? If, let’s say, Juan Manuel Marquez is an A and Ricky Hatton is a C? (Even in his heyday, Hatton wasn’t exactly a great counterpuncher.)
by taco pal on Nov 13, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Cotto is a solid B. Maaaybe B plus. Here’s the thing: think about the speed of the counterpunches. Compare Cotto’s and Marquez. See, even if “technically” they’re comparable skillwise (and they really aren’t, in my opinion), Marquez’s comes at a much higher velocity — a velocity Pacquiao is familiar with. So just because Cotto KNOWS which counter to throw, it doesn’t mean it’s going to land.
by Areglado on Nov 13, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I personally thought the way Morales boxed Pacquiao in their first fight was excellent and could still be applied very well as a blue print or even as a game plan. It’s going to be really interesting seeing what Cotto has in store plan-wise.

well i, a notorious cotto despiser/pacquiao lover, have said before. cotto might have a chance if he went to war with pacman, but he’s not. he’s not “shot” or “shellshocked”, but he’s not going to want to war it out with pacman. he’s going to try to box, and he’s going to get demolished by doing so. cotto’s in a catch-22, and there is no way out for him

just my contrarian attitude. i see people like lampley crying and drooling over cotto, and i don’t buy into it. i have nothing against him personally and i love to watch him fight, but i’d prefer to see him get KO’d every time he enters the ring :)
that and i’m mexican and i loathe every puerto rican boxer to ever exist :)

You're Mexican....
You hate all Puerto Rican fighters.
You hate two of the best Mexican fighters of this generation.
You love the dude that beat the shit out of those great Mexican fighters.
OK, I am officially confused.

Also, JMM has made remarks that Chicanos and Tejanos would be “half-Mexican.” Something that some of them apparently take exception to.

So do Marquez and Barrera
And they have the added benefit of being, um, actually Mexican.

i respect both JMM and barrera as fighters, but i hate them personally. barrera comes off as a huge prick, and JMM is a whiny sumbitch. pacquiao is humble, as arreglado said fights like a mexican.
also arreglado just put up a new comment which actually strikes home to my heart. in his pre-fight interview right before the baby bull fight, he called me a “50% mexican” which is worthless to his eyes. so fuck him i’m not gonna take that laying down

Damn Straight. I’ve never liked Barrera (Morales all the way, baby!). And Marquez, though I admire his skill set so much, just came across as such a baby! Wanna beat Pacquiao??? Quit ending up on your ass!

The last time I saw Morales address Barrera was the Countdown show for Pacquiao-Morales III. I still and will forever love his one line about his old rival: “He’s a motherfucker.”

Barrera just doesn’t come across as particularly genuine. Morales is notoriously sullen, even choleric, but at least you know what you’re getting.

Watch the Ledabwa or Sakasul fights and he was even more limited then

yeah that’s what i was getting at. really small pacquiao was as limited as limited can be, and when he demolished barrera he was still a one handed guy but he was such a beast that he could get away with it with MOST guys (JMM I, Morales I). now obv pacquiao has evolved beyond anything he has ever been (v3)

For the first and very probably the last time I’m going to apply physics to a fight. You will have to forgive me for this, blame my father’s influence as he is a physicist and a mathematician!
F=ma (sort of but let’s not get into all that!)
This is the same as force= mass times acceleration
Essentially the speed of a punch will add to its power and this is why I personally beleive that if a boxer retains speed as they move up in weight, as Manny has done, then their power will grow relatively. A silly theory maybe but I like it and it’s part of the reason i am picking Manny.

He looked really good, actually. Although, he did seem a bit weary when Piven was interviewing him, a bit disoriented,a bit hesitant. Then again, it could just be Piven.

Cotto's English.....
makes for some really strange quotes. He always says “pretty” when he means “very,” leading to some comments that make him sound unsure of himself. “I’m pretty confident in my abilities.” “It’s been a pretty hard camp.”
