Bert Sugar apparently doesn't read Bad Left Hook... ;)
Former BLH writer Kevin Gonzalez is at the Cotto/Pacquiao fight and sent me this email…
Sugar was by himself. Just walked into the bar at the MGM, and sat down next to me. I didn’t realize it at first, because I was talking to a friend of mine (Cotto’s lawyer’s friend), so he told me: “Hey, isn’t that some famous boxing guy behind you?” I turned and it was Bert fucking Sugar, fedora and cigar and all. We talked for a good while—he was extremely, extremely nice. I told him about my writing, and I also told him about badlefthook, but I got the impression that he doesn’t go online. Funny thing is, after talking to him for a while, I asked if it’d be okay to take a photo with him, and when we took one, a bunch of people who were at the bar (packed with boxing fans) realized that Bert Sugar was there, so they started mobbing him and asking him for photos too, which he was very nice about.
I didn’t watch the last 24/7, but I think Cotto looks good. I hope he didn’t overtrain, though. And I don’t really know about this Joe Santiago guy—I think it’s pretty clear that Cotto calls the shots in his training camp, and essentially trains himself. That said, I think Manny may be a little overconfident himself. He actually has a concert scheduled for tomorrow night, after the fight. He’s going to fight Cotto, and then sing…I think that’s pretty ridiculous.
The atmosphere here is insane. When I went to the Cotto-Margarito weigh in, there were probably about 200 people there early, waiting for the doors to open. When I got there today, about 2 hours before they opened the doors (4 hours before the actual weigh in), there were thousands and thousands of people standing in line. Every hotel is showing the fight on closed circuit, and those are selling out too… It should be insane in there tomorrow. A lot of gansgta-looking Filipinos around. I wouldn’t be surprised if it got ugly in the crowd, or at the MGM after the fight, tomorrow…

This is going to be a legendary fight
It isn’t often that I simply have no idea what to expect. I would not be surprised by PacMan by KO, by UD, by SD, or Cotto by KO, UD, or SD. I could see either guy KTFO the other in the first two rounds, or a late round stoppage on cuts. Truly, this could be the fight of the decade.

The “where required” means that step isn’t required where the beer purchase isn’t required. So in NY, you just need to fill out the slip and send it to them with a copy of your cable bill.

Whats the over/under
On the undercard being worse than the fights yesterday at House of Blues? If you are going to make me pony up $60, at least attempt at giving me a decent undercard….
I actually enjoy watching Yuri Foreman. I think he’s a guy who maximizes his own skills and it’s really not an ugly style. He can’t hit for shit but I’m looking forward to that fight.

I heard those fights were horrible though
There’s a CHANCE Santos-Foreman could be a good tactical fight, even though there’s virtually no chance it ends before the final bell. Soto-Gomez could be a war. Chavez has had entertaining fights before. On paper, it’s a bad undercard, but it could end up being decent.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
The Catubay fight was interesting because Catubay was just unloading huge shots until Rosas could finally figure out what was going on. So that was at least entertaining, and he was also being a dick about, Catubay that is, so much so that I really wanted him to get KTFO. Therefore there was one fight that was interesting, Soto-Gomez then needs to be good to live up to that I guess then. I think Santos-Foreman is going to get too cautious/technical and might be a snoozer. JCC jr Rowland, its embarrassing that this much of a showcase fight is on PPV….
by Waldo Rastel on Nov 14, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions
While this one isn't great
there have been a lot of PPV undercards that looked even worse on paper than this one. Usually Top Rank PPVs also. Bob Arum just loves to load his least TV-friendly fighters onto PPV undercards, since it’s the only way he can get them paid (since a network would never pay for a Foreman or Luevano fight).

I'm so mixed on this fight
I do love both of these fighters dearly
1) On one hand, I wish for Manny to lose so everyone can shut up already about him being pound for pound king.
2) On the other, I would like to see the “Super Bowl” of boxing in a Pacquaio/Mayweather Jr bout.
But I genuinely like Miguel more as a person and as a fighter.
I still think Pac wins in 10 though

After much deliberation, I think I’ve decided to root for Cotto, even though I love Pacquiao too. Two of my reasons:
1. I think Cotto was probably wronged in the Margarito fight and would like to see that wrong righted in some cosmic sense. Who knows where Cotto would be today if he had beaten Margarito? He might have beaten De La Hoya next and become huge.
2. Too many annoying Pacquiao supporters. They break down into two groups. First, you have the ones who are like the new editions of Bill Swerski’s Superfans and think Pacquiao is a demigod and have very little knowledge of boxing apart from Pacquiao. Second you have your celebrity bandwagon-jumpers, like Sylvester Stallone saying he’s “afraid for Cotto” without even knowing how to pronounce “Cotto” properly. Both are vile. Cotto’s fanbase is much less irritating, probably because there have been so many Puerto Rican champions in the recent past so this is “been there done that.”
Normally, I wouldn’t consider silly stuff like this, but sometimes you have to do it just because you need a tiebreaker. I do hope Pacquiao acquits himself well and continues to be a megastar for years to come.
I’d be scared for stallone’s health if I gave a shit about him. Can a man OD on botox?

I got hit with a bolt of lightning a few hours ago, and I had a revelation: This fight is going to end in a draw. Early rounds are going to the Pacman, while Cotto will gobble up the second half with Marquez-like counterpunching.

Im rooting on Cotto because I think he fights well even in adversity. A lot of people forgets that he actually was winning rounds against Margarito. There is the little known link between The Philippines and Mexico: The Philippine archipelago was governed by the Spaniards through New Spain, now Mexico from the mid 16th to the early 19th century. In that time, the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade flourished, bringing all sorts of goodies from both places to “indios,” “mestizos,” and “peninsulares” alike.
So in honor of this centuries long exchange, we bring you, “Battle Axe of Doom,” Manny Pacquiao. From us, to you. Enjoy.
Prediction.
I’ll admit that I have no reason to believe this other than my fandom, but I’m going with Cotto by TKO in 5. I figure that’s a rare enough call for me to get some credit if by blind luck it comes true and I’d be thrilled to see it!

I'm guessing the Pinoy is the prospect
He’s 14-2-1, Marquez is 9-5-2. Arum LOVES signing pretty much any young Pinoy prospect he can find for peanuts, and then dumps them the second they don’t pan out.

To Winchester's credit
He’s blocking the vast majority of what Korobov is throwing. He’s just not landing much of anything himself, and Korobov LOOKS much flashier.

Hillary Clinton was in the Philippines the other day and was asked her pick for Cotto/Pacquiao. She was smart enough to say “Of course the Pacman’s going to win. I mean, is there any doubt?”
If she answered any other way, it’d probably spark a full-fledged diplomatic incident.
She might as well have set fire to the Philippines flag

Bobfather's gotta be thrilled
that this wasn’t televised. So many people still think Korobov is a monster based on his performance against Bartinelli. And he will be great and all, I just think he gets overrated compared to guys like Jacobs, Golovkin and N’Jikam, who I think are just as good if not better.

Gomez-Soto Karass R1
Both jabbing to start. Gomez shoots a long left that comes up from under, lands. Same punch lands again moments later, and a right comes behind it. JSK warned for a borderline low shot. JSK comes in, Gomez warned for a low shot this time. Both guys are throwing, as expected. Lot of jabs being thrown this round, just constant back and forth tactics at center ring. JSK landing a few decent shots with both hands, and now they both dig to the body. Gomez with a hard left to the body. Right to the body, left hook upstairs by Gomez. Now he throws a right hand haymaker that is blocked. Good first round of action, and I think this one will kick into a second gear pretty quickly.
Soto Karass 10-9, but close round

But it was close. I thought those body punches he landed in the middle were easily the most effective punches of the round.

Gomez-Soto Karass R2
Nice sneaky right by Gomez is the first good shot of the round. Right hand by Gomez upstairs again. It’s just a quick little shot he’s throwing where JSK can’t see it. Good right-left combo from Gomez, and now he’s really putting in some good work. Gomez is the aggressor this round for sure. Soto Karass eating those counter rights, and there’s a BIG right hand by Gomez that caught JSK. Gomez needs a haircut. Hippy. That right lands again, and there it clips JSK again. Nice right by JSK near the end of the round, but then another from Gomez. Nice action to close it. Fun fight so far.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Gomez-Soto Karass
Gomez starting to really press the action, making it happen, and taking firm control. JSK looks a little sluggish right now. The first round was even, but the second and first half of the third have Gomez looking much faster. Butt of heads, Gomez is cut outside of his left eye. Drakulich warned JSK for low blows again, threatened to take a point next time. Doctor will take a look.
That’s not a good cut, but we’ll go on.
And now we have another low blow, and Soto Karass loses a point.
1-2 by Gomez, who has entirely controlled this round. Looks like the late weight cut might have really affected Soto Karass. Nice left hook by Gomez, and now JSK drops his hands. He looks frustrated.

Gomez-Soto Karass R4
Both guys are coming out throwing the hands to start the fourth for sure. Gomez looks like he wants to go for a finish, fighting with as Brick said, some real urgency.
ANOTHER LOW BLOW! And another point! Soto Karass is straying low constantly in this fight. This is rough. Now JSK needs to do something. He’s in a real hole now.
Gomez REALLY firing some shots that have some purpose on them now. He’s also done really well defensively, slipping and dodging very nicely the entire fight. Gomez pumping the jab now.

Gomez-Soto Karass R5
NICE right hand by JSK to start the right, following a left hook to the ribs. Looks like JSK realizes he’s in a hole and will need a stoppage win probably. Nice combo by Gomez, and then a GREAT combo coming back from JSK. This is a bit of a dogfight round, really aggressive from JSK and the blood is bothering Gomez. Snapping jab by Soto Karass. And another one. The blood is really bothering Gomez now. So is his hair. I’m not being funny — his hair keeps getting in his eyes. They end it trading, and Soto Karass lands some hard shots in that exchange. Tremendous round for JSK.

Lead left by Santos, and now he puts on the bum’s rush. Santos at 173 looks really, REALLY soft. FAST lead right hand doubled up by Foreman. And Foreman comes right back at him. I think Foreman can feel and see he’s going to have a speed advantage here. Santos looks really tentative and again, quite soft. I mean 173 — good gracious. Santos misses an upperut from outside.
Both throw their power hands at the same time, nobody lands. Santos gets aggressive at the end of the round, but this one was Yuri’s for me.

Santos is going baaaaaaaaaald.
First minute of this round is everything we expected, as in nobody is doing anything. Foreman with a quick rush, nothing real lands, and he gets back outside. Foreman does a duck and rush but then doesn’t…throw a punch. Santos does. Santos thinks he has Yuri hurt, but doesn’t. HUGE LEFT BY SANTOS! Foreman nearly went down. RIGHT HAND FOREMAN AND DOWN GOES SANTOS! looked like a punch on the break. Santos is pissed. That was pretty obvious if you ask me. On the break and to the back of the head.

I just get the feeling watching this that eventually, Santos is going to knock Yuri out pretty goddamn hard.
Foreman bouncing and circling, bouncing and circling, flicking his left hand around, occasionally throwing the right but not really getting close to landing it. Meanwhile Santos stands there. He’s really into standing there. Foreman with a slappy rush at Santos, who goes the ropes and gets it reset at center ring. There’s a right from Yuri inside the final seconds. That wins the round for sure!

In fact, Lampley has just about given up on this fight, it seems. There’s a left from Santos that clips. He’s looking for one left hand. Santos is awful tonight. Just awful. BIG RIGHT BY FOREMAN! SANTOS STUNNED AND FOREMAN IS FIRING AND WINGING SHOTS! He hit him in the back of the head again there. Round ends shortly after.

Foreman hits him to the body, Santos falls, ruled a slip. Santos had tried to load up his left again early, but it didn’t land so I think he’s waiting for the seventh round to try again. Sneaky right by Foreman. Yuri gets a bit aggressive, Santos ties him up. Clash of heads, Foreman bleeding a bit. Santos just fucking growled at him. I’m serious. What the fuck was that? BIG RIGHT AND DOWN GOES SANTOS? Or not. That was a headbutt? No knockdown? Jesus Christ, Santos has been two times now in cases that looked more legit than the official KD that Jay Nady called.
Now they’re stopping to look at Foreman’s cut. They’ll go on. Lampley: “It would’ve been a bonus for the entertainment level if they’d have stopped it.”

Lol at the complaining conversation
Foreman isn’t complaining because he’s been the one fighting dirty. He got cut on a headbutt HE intiated. He scored a knockdown on a throw. He almost scored another one on a butt. Of course Foreman isn’t complaining – almost every ruling is going in his favor.

Another head bump and Santos complains again. Nady is really buying that ol’ line. Sneaky right by Foreman wobbles Santos again. Santos looks awful. Now he starts complaining of a headbutt again. How about you throw a punch? The fight might go better for you. This is an awful, awful fight at this point. It feels like it has gone hours.
Hey, Santos lands a left. And then the round ends and we get some sort of Queen mash-up.

Lead right by Foreman, but Santos is really starting to land a few more shots, even though he’s still mostly loading up. This is a terrible performance by Chavez, who is no better now than he was two or three years ago. Chavez lands a good right at teh end of the round.
Rowland 10-9

Not worth watching the fight really
And either guy could be winning. Every round has been close enough to score either way, evidently (I thought the last round was wide, but if Scott scored it the other way, that pretty much means it wasn’t).

Chavez-Rowland R6
This round is a slapfight. Couple decent rights from Rowland that Chavez just willingly eats because Rowland can’t punch. I’m not trying to dump on Rowland, but — oh, Lampley IS trying to dump on him: “Rowland literally loaded up a right hand. And…I think I could’ve taken that punch.” The guy can’t punch. He’s tiring, he’s weak, and Chavez is wearing him down. And not a moment too soon!
This is become a Chavez fight in a big way.

Not only is he ‘not great’, but he just loads up on the left hook again and again. It’s one thing to be overblown based on physical talents, it’s another to suck tactically. Chavez is the anti-yuri foreman while only having marginally better power

The fact that this went nine rounds is almost ridiculous. All credit to Rowland, he’s taken good shots and been there the entire fight, and done way better than most expected him to. But he’s losing, and if he wasn’t, he would be officially anyway. This is a glorified club fight.

Cotto-Pacquiao R1
HERE WE GO!
Cotto with a STIFF jab to start. Pacquiao felt that. Nice quick jab from Pacquiao now. Another jab from Cotto. Cotto backs him down a bit. Manny with a left, more diversionary than anything it seemed. Cotto short on a 1-2. Left to the body by Cotto. Pacquiao way more tentative than his last three fights for sure. He knows who he’s fighting.
Pacquiao’s left is blocked. Cotto really coming him with the jab, then a GREAT show of speed by Cotto on a combo, though mostly blocked. Both guys know who they’re against. That’s the best I can describe it. This is TENSE.
They tie up at center ring as Cotto throws. Left hook to the body by Cotto. Cotto charges at the end.
Cotto round. Very much so, IMO.

Bad Left Hook
"Well Howie, I think I'm going to stay outside and outjab him." -- Tex Cobb telling Howard Cosell how he would approach Larry Holmes
Cotto-Pacquiao R2
Pacquiao short on his own 1-2 to start the round. Cotto throwing from the sides, not landing. Both guys are just THAT far from a big blow, but both are so good that they can make the other man miss. Left to the body by Cotto, Cotto defends against Pacquiao and lands a straight right. Cotto with another SHARP jab. That jab is the difference-maker so far. Manny throws three, all blocked. BIG shot by Pacquiao and here he goes! He got him! Right hook lands! Cotto with a body shot just before it! Body shot again by Cotto!
LEFT HOOK COTTO! Wham! HERE WE GO! Right to the body by Cotto, maybe a smidge low on the belt line. Three lefts from Pacquiao, one lands. Pacquiao blocks the body shots. This is getting tactical now, and very exciting. BODY SHOT PACQUIAO! Flurry by Pacquiao gets in! Right hook lands! Pacquiao is really starting to move in there. Cotto batters away at Pac’s guard. Pacquiao with HUGE SHOTS NEAR THE END OF THE ROUND! He doesn’t stagger at all! AND THEY END THE ROUND WARRING
Pacquiao 10-9

Right by Cotto, mostly blocked. Miguel jabbing now. Jab by Manny. Left by Manny is just short. Pacquiao throwing AND DOWN GOES COTTO! RIGHT HOOK GOT HIM! He is SO FAST!
Cotto doesn’t seem hurt, he just lost his balance and got caught at the right time. COTTO COMING AT HIM! Cotto has gone southpaw. Back conventional. Pacquiao with a body shot, Cotto with a NASTY left to the body. Pac’s right hook is working, Cotto drills to the body. Body shot Pacquiao, Cotto feels there was a butt and there was. No blood.
Pacquiao missing on speed stuff, but a left hook by Cotto! Pac felt it! HERE THEY GO AGAIN! Cotto banging away at the gloves, trying to break the guard. BIG SHOT BY COTTO! Man oh man! Mouse under Cotto’s eye.

Pacquiao has found his timing and his distance, but now here comes Miguel with some good shots in the first minute of the fourth round. Body shot by Manny. And another. Pacquiao in and out with great stuff now. Right to the body, left upstairs by Cotto. Now they both let go!
Cotto getting Manny to fight in close. Good body shot and great shots by Manny! Cotto’s hurt! HERE THEY GO! HERE THEY GO! HERE THEY GO! OH MAN!
Manny lays off a bit now. MANNY STUCK ON THE ROPES! COTTO POUNDING AWAY AND BANGING ON HIM! Body shots by Cotto! Right hand Cotto on the chin! Cotto just looking for any shot, and Manny finally gets off the ropes. Manny charging now! DOWN GOES COTTO ON A PERFECT COUNTER SHOT! MIGUEL IS HURT NOW FOR SURE!

Cotto-Pacquiao R5
Right to the chin by Cotto. Pacquiao using his speed again as the first minute of the round ends, and starting to take the pace. Cotto caught again! Right hook Manny! Pacquiao is taking over.
Right to the body by Miguel. Pacquiao on the ropes, guard up, and Cotto backs off. Cotto gets low and makes Manny miss. There’s a nice shot inside by Cotto with the right hand. He just hasn’t been able to catch Manny clean enough, and Manny is no doubt acquitting himself at this weight. Two more pounds would make no difference, I don’t think. He is an incredible fighter.
BIG uppercut by Cotto! LEFT HAND PACQUIAO SHAKEN! They end the round throwing. I think Cotto landed the best shots of a tight round.

Pacquiao pressing the action now. Nice left by Manny. This is everything I thought it would be. HUGE RIGHT HOOK BY MANNY, and Miguel takes it well! Manny pressing now, but a left hook from Cotto lands.
Cotto has gone southpaw, back to right-handed and he gets caught. Cotto hurt again perhaps. Manny is wearing him down with speed and power. Anyone questioning his power at this weight anymore?
BIG left by Cotto, and Pacquiao absorbs it. Nice flurry by Pacquiao, and he gets some more good shots in. A minute left in the round, or a little under actually. Pacquiao trying to jab the guard down. This has been a big round for Manny Pacquiao.
COTTO HURT AGAIN AND MANNY IS FIRING AWAY, BUT MIGUEL CLINCHES AND STARTS FIRING BACK! BIG SHOTS BY MIGUEL LANDING! BELL SOUNDS!

Cotto-Pacquiao R7
Miguel is swelling up pretty big.
GREAT right hook by Pacquiao, and now he’s teeing off! Miguel’s in trouble. Manny throwing, Miguel cutting him off as best he can. BIG SHOTS FROM MANNY! Honestly, I thought Miguel was going down there. Sometimes he takes the shots very well. Manny gets clipped with a huge left hook.
Body shot by Miguel. Uppercut by Pacquiao! Cotto stung again. He’s getting beaten up a bit. Cotto has no idea how to get at this guy, and Miguel Cotto LOOKS GOOD TONIGHT. This is a master class performance by Manny Pacquiao. Wonderful boxing.
Pacquiao is owning this round with 30 seconds left. Miguel needs to accept that he needs to knock this guy out. He can’t outbox him. He’s not fast enough. Stiff jab by Cotto, but a clear Pacquiao round.

Cotto-Pacquiao R8
Manny continuing to own the ring now. Miguel is desperately searching for a way to break him down. You can see his gears turning in there. He’s looking everywhere for an in, and just not finding it yet.
They keep doing this “big man / little man” shit. The two look quite similar size-wise even tonight.
Cotto is hurt again. Miguel is running, looking for anything he can find, but he’s retreating. He’s on his bike trying to catch him. Cotto just hit him hard with a left, but Pacquiao WALKED THROUGH IT. He just walked through that.
Right hand potshot by Miguel. BIG TRADE ON THE ROPES! Manny misses a huge left. Cotto is clearly now trying to catch Manny coming in. He’s been just short a couple times.
Pacquiao 10-9

Lampley is talking about pulling Cotto out. Way too premature for that, IMO. I mean come on. He was worse off against Clottey, frankly. Pacquiao’s beating him, but it’s not absurd.
Cotto retreating, trying to time him, and can’t. Cotto in the corner, MANNY UNLOADING, and Cotto clinches up. Miguel’s in trouble as Manny just swings his arms wild all over the place. He’s going for it now. He thinks he has him beaten.
Left hand from Manny! And here he goes! Miguel swelling up, bleeding, CAUGHT HUGE! Cotto is finished. Pacquiao is now dominating.
HUGE LEFT BY COTTO, but Manny WALKS THROUGH IT AGAIN! He’s unreal.
Pacquiao is starting to really dominate. NOW they might want to considering getting Miguel out. He’s running and doing nothing. A few potshots here and there. That’s it. He’s getting killed now.

Cotto is coming at him now. Harold says they should stop it. Larry disagrees. I disagree too if he’s going to fight. Combo from Cotto, mostly blocked by Manny. Miguel is actually boxing this round, throwing a few punches, actually doing something again. Last round I thought it was fine to stop it. But if he’s going to fight, he should fight. He’s a world class fighter.
Manny with some sniper shots with about 30 seconds left. Cotto is backing off again. He’s just not throwing. He’s afraid to get caught in a firefight now. And Manny lays the pressure on, and Miguel moves out again. Big shot Manny.

They both get on my nerves but Manny annoys me more. I cant pinpoint it.

I second that
but JMM was able to counter punch him and get a decision and that is Floyds greatest strength. He will by no means be embarrassed as I thought before this fight.
Cotto never really looked in it this whole fight. Way too fast, looked extremely slow as compared to Cotto and Cotto didn’t have any apparent power. Maybe the weight really made a difference but he had no speed and no power….
maybe pacquiao really made a difference

I mean i thought he won the first round but it felt like he was really aware of his power.

That's the most impressive performance from Pacquiao I've ever seen
He dismantled Cotto’s ass and Cotto wasn’t performing badly.
Fire Bruce DeHaven.
I'm so impressed by Pac's chin. He took a lot of shots that snapped his head back. Crazy.
33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.
That is Floyd's job.
He is the one looking to climb up on Pac’s pedestal.

Stupid stream I had didn't go to the official post-fight particulars
I was ready to take a screenshot of how badly Cotto’s face was messed up.
Fire Bruce DeHaven.
Thank God
It need to be more forceful…like I’m leaving Top rank if I don’t get Mayweather.

Pac... still the lb 4 lb
Every time that guy goes into a fight everyone is unsure of the guy.
He takes hit after hit and it doesn’t faze him.

Absolutely.
He actually played Pac for the first five or so rounds. Played him well.
He just wasn’t as strong/fast/tough…
Certainly a credit to his fans though.

Dear Bob Arum
If you don’t make Pac May, I will be so f-ing pissed. Both May and Arum needs to stop whining and get it done. I would call it the blurriest fight that could be made.
