Z Gorres in critical condition after fight in Vegas

Zgorres_medium Filipino bantamweight Z Gorres is in critical condition and undergoing surgery at a Las Vegas hospital after collapsing following a win over Luis Melendez tonight at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues. The surgery is to attempt to relieve pressure on his brain.

ABS CBN news reports that Gorres suffered a knockdown in the fight, and was on his feet through being declared the winner. He then collapsed, and was down for about five minutes before being rushed out of the building and to a hospital.

Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com talked to a member of Gorres' team who said that he's at UMC Hospital, and that a part of Gorres' skull had to be removed to relieve the swelling of the brain. He has been placed in a medically induced coma.

This is awful news. The 27-year-old Gorres had been rumored to be the next opponent for Fernando Montiel, a bantamweight titlist, early next year. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Bad Left Hook are with Gorres tonight, and we'll keep you up-to-date on what's happening.

UPDATE (5:26am ET): Gorres remains in critical condition, according to ABS CBN, who updated their original article linked above.

Doctors said the next 24 hours will be very critical for the Filipino boxer and they will be observing him closely. A CT scan has been scheduled for Sunday (Saturday in the US) to determine if the swelling of Gorres's left brain has subsided.

This sounds just awful. Grim news indeed. My heart goes out to Gorres and his family.

Oh no… :(

"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
