Z Gorres in stable condition
Z Gorres, the Filipino bantamweight who collapsed and underwent brain surgery following a win on Friday in Las Vegas, has been upgraded to stable condition by doctors at Vegas' University Medical Center.
The 27-year-old Gorres is responding to stimuli, which is a great sign. There was real concern that Gorres, who was placed in a medically induced coma after having part of his skull removed to relieve pressure on his brain, would be unable to come through this. But it's looking more and more like he will, and that even though his active career as a boxer is over, his life will continue.
Keep Z in your thoughts as he pulls out of this. It was a massive weekend for boxing, and Filipino boxing in particular, but we also narrowly avoided a major tragedy. It's a reminder that this sport is no game, even for someone as talented and prepared as Gorres.

He had to have a piece of his skull removed. He MIGHT fight again, I suppose, but the chance is fairly remote, and he’d almost surely never be able to get licensed in the U.S. again. Well, maybe Texas.
