Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

This is the type of scene that would be unimaginable in the States, and frankly in most parts of the world. This is a massive gathering of Filipinos in Taytay township, east of Manila. Most of them are flood victims, together to watch Pacquiao's fight on TV. It's unreal how revered Manny Pacquiao is in his home country. As much as I try to understand that, I don't think I ever truly could.

Boxing gives hopeless people hope. I think when you fighting to survive, and you see someone like you fighting his own battle and winning, 80% of people will feel hope and pride. The other 20% feel jealousy and resentment, or nothing at all.

I am Jewish

and for that reason, I am a Yuri Foreman fan. Obviously, I’ve gone overboard to the point of mockery, but I do legitimately like Yuri (if only for the fact that bylorussian jews need to stick together). Unfortunately, I don’t really know any other boxing fan Jews. He’s really not big enough to have a name outside of the hardcore I think. Maybe he has a base in Brooklyn.

It is nice for PI to have the #1 best in the world athelete in a sport.

*Unless KP has a secret plan that makes this statement incorrect.

I don’t want to die without seeing Manny Paquiao sing live at one of his post fight shows. Watching him jump out on stage at the Mandalay with that goofy grin and belt out “The Way We Were” or some shit like that would be like swallowing a sheet of acid. I know that Karaoke is huge in the Phillipines, but there’s still something a little loony about it. It’s possible that Manny is just a tiny bit crazy, and I like that.

He’s an eccentric, in the great tradition of Sugar Ray Robinson. He’ll be carrying a midget around on his shoulders soon

He’s a better singer than Ray Robinson. Although, that’s not saying much, from what I’ve heard.

I don’t want to spread a rumor that he’s batshit insane or anything. I meant the good kind of crazy, like Geronimo, or Gary Busey.

In the past in times of war or recession people have turned to boxing to take their attention away from it all.

I think boxing is more modernised in America now but there are some legitimate Rocky stories still being played out in boxing.

Pac did come from real poverty and I’ve read his first fight was $5 and it went towards feeding his mother.

He’s a greaceful champion though. I mean there is something to be said about a fighter who takes it easy on his opponent because he is afraid of hurting him too much.

It’s not only that but the man is generally likable.

Somebody showed me this interview that was taken two weeks before the Cotto fight:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2kQV2qHUhE

You don’t see fighters laughing like that.

I’m a big Ali fan(though if you’ve read many of my posts you probably don’t need telling) and the things I remember most about Ali have nothing to do with his victories or how many belts he had or his Olympic victory I remember how nice of an individual he was, how respectful he was of his opponents and though he often broke the rules he was generally a very nice guy.

The thing I remember most about Ali is one quote that to me sums him up and that is “I wish people would love everybody else the way they love me. It would be a better world.”

I won’t remember Pacquaio for the belts hes won or the money hes made as people will come and supercede that but he has qualities that are timeless and those include being a good and nice human being.

It’s nice to see these things amongst the glitter and glamour of modern day boxing. Boxing will never be summed up in PPV sales the hope it gives to people at times of depression is priceless.

What?

No.

I don't mean to jump on you

But, my god, in the Phillipines Ali stood under Frazier’s hotel window making ape noises and waving a gun. Ali was a great boxer, but he was jerk of the highest order.

great "fighter" I mean

He was only an average “boxer,” but he was a hell of a fighter.
