First fight was alright. There was a kd in the first but not much past that. Second fight is a bit better. Stan took the first round

No problemo
This is really a main event card, mostly. The first Mayfield-Santana fight was supposed to be good though.

It was alright. Kareem was winning slighty most rounds until the 5th. Santana looked like he ran out of gas. KO kareem!

Rumble at Rama Update
77-75, 76-76, 78-74 for Ciso Morales over Miguel Gonzalez. Opening 4 rounds were fought at a good clip, but both looked spent over the second half. I had it 76-76. Molitor/Saez is up next.
TV begins at 10:30, I believe. The rest of the card has started.

Perhaps I should hold off on updates – since the show I believe the broadcast will be slightly tape delayed. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone waiting to watch the telecast.
I am 99.9999% certain the only things TV are Sonsona and Molitor.

Jermain’s fine. He’s lost some fights. Like I’ve said before, there are literally thousands of boxers who have been repeatedly knocked out harder and more frequently than Jermain has. I don’t get the cries to retire. He’s going to make his money.

Yeah and since then? Showtime and Golden Boy rarely work together and Golden Boy and Top Rank are notably absent from this tournament.

Molitor’s sleep walking through this one. Saez was actually pushing the fight for periods of the 3 – prompting one fan to yell, “Hey Steve, do you need a Red Bull!?” – which drew some laughs. Not much excitement to report.

Kessler-Ward R1
Ward shoots a left hook, blocked. Ward with a stiff jab. Jab to the body by Ward. This is an 18-foot ring, both agreed to it despite the contracts calling for 20-foot rings. I thought it looked small.
Ward goes southpaw early. Left to the chin by Ward, maybe a bit short. He’s shooting his punches with purpose. Kessler starting very tentatively. Kessler traps Ward in the corner, but lets him out. Body left by Ward. Kessler gets Ward into another corner, starts throwing, and Ward ties him up. Ward back to a conventional stance. Big “USA” chant. This is a rowdy crowd.
Ward with a left on the chin. Tactical first round, Ward takes it with aggression.
Ward 10-9

Ward 10-9 here
But Kessler has a history of feeling out for the first round or two
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Kessler-Ward R2
Ward starts the round right-handed. Kessler finds an opening on a lunging Ward, and throws but doesn’t land anything. Kessler even seemed a bit nervy with those attempts. Kessler starting to put his jab out there. Mikkel with a right to the body, and then a jab to the body. Ward badly misses a lead left hook. He’s trying to make that a money punch tonight, but Kessler’s avoided it thus far. Ward goes southpaw. Kessler has cut off the ring tremendously so far, and the ring size might really hurt Andre.
Two sneaky lefts by Ward off the break. Uppercut gets in, but not big. Big right by Ward, Kessler ties up. Ward steals the round.
Ward 10-9

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Kessler-Ward R3
Ward starts the round fast, backing Kessler off. Kessler hasn’t really established anything at all. The jab isn’t pumping, he hasn’t timed him yet. Ward is giving him all kinds of stylistic problems. Kessler missing a lot, looking unsure of what he wants to do.
Nice jab by Kessler finally breaks through. Three shots from Ward, all at least partially blocked. Short right hand on a counter by Ward! Not flush, but he had it timed right. Ward lunges, is just off again but clips him.
Ward 10-9
Ward 30-27
He just looks smarter and more well-rounded through three.

Kessler-Ward R4
Kessler has a mouse under his eye. Ward digs to the body and keeps making Kessler miss. Ward is a lot faster than Kessler — that much is plainly obvious so far. Ward getting rises out of the crowd, but it’s mostly that he’s throwing big than landing big. Kessler lands a left hook! BIG RIGHT BY WARD! KESSLER TIES UP! Kessler steps back, uses his jab.
Kessler eats another big right! And Mikkel’s cut. Ward is putting the pressure on! Left hook by Kessler lands, now Ward goes southpaw and lands a left. BIG round for Andre Ward!

Kessler-Ward R5
Ward is starting to flat-out outquick and outbox Kessler. He’s got him reeling, not physically but mentally. Left hook by Ward, but one lands from Kessler too. The Showtime crew is starting to go with their pro-Ward narrative, so try not to get too caught up. Maybe Al can save them from going all HBO.
Kessler starting to land. Body shot lands, big jab lands. Jab by Ward gets there. Kessler’s starting to kick it up a tick. Kessler back to the jab again. That’s the punch that makes him happen. Kessler did better this round, but I again score it for Ward.

Ward getting REALLY aggressive. Almost sloppily so. Kessler can catch a guy fighting like that and turn the lights out. Ward might be trying to impress TOO much now.
Uppercut by Ward. I said earlier this week I’d never been overly impressed by Ward — my tune has goddamned changed tonight, I’ll tell you that much. This kid can fight. He has outclassed and frustrated Kessler.
Ward is reckless now, and Kessler is not taking advantage. Left hand by Ward upstairs backs Kessler down. Ward is starting to get overly brave and he’s still beating him. Kessler is having a devil of a time. Shot to the chin by Ward!
Andre Ward is pitching a shutout. Folks, the new American star of boxing might be having his coming out party.

Kessler-Ward R7
I will say this, and I’m not trying to downplay Ward: This is the worst I’ve ever seen Kessler fight. Joe Calzaghe didn’t do this to Kessler.
But, there’s Kessler getting the jab going. Ward lunging. Kessler got a right uppercut in. Ward with a BIG right near the end of the round — but it doens’t shake Mikkel. Toughest round to score for me. I actually go with Mikkel, very close.

Sonsona - Hernadez Update
Through 3. Sonsona looks much bigger in there, and he’s pushing Hernandez back when he lands, but Hernandez is cagier than I thought. He lost the first 2 rounds, but he took the play away from Sonsona for much of the 3rd, and Sonsona seemed a little gunshy about unloading, although he did close strongly.
Nice right Andre!

Dirrell should take notes on how to use his speed in a better way
Ward and Dirrell are very similar to me and i think Dirrell can do the exact same thing Ward is but he is some what afraid to engage. Either way Ward is amazing me in this fight.
Kessler-Ward R8
Ward starting to land almost at will early in the round. He’s waxing Kessler in there. Dominating him. Andre Ward has savvy beyond his years. There’s a reason he won the gold medal.
Kessler taking body shots, taking shots upstairs. Ward has put it on Mikkel Kessler so far. He’s landing GOOD, clean shots, including a huge right near the end of the round. That one thumped. Kessler is missing all over the place, Ward is just putting it on him. Ward charges near the bell again.
Andre Ward is dominant.

Kessler-Ward R9
Kessler wants out. Ward might smell that blood.
Ward really coming at him this round. Kessler throws a right off his back foot. Kessler is mentally broken. Ward is continuing to flat-out dominate this fight. He’s just making Kessler look second-rate, and Mikkel Kessler is not second-rate. Ward has used his head some — Brick is right about that. But he’s done so effectively, if you will. Almost Holyfield-ish.
But it’s another round for Andre Ward. Mikkel Kessler has established nothing tonight.

Wards jab is much improved from the last time I saw him
his last fight it sort of looked like he was back handing it. Now it is thrown correctly with power.
Kessler-Ward R10
Ward has been the better jabber tonight. I never, ever would have predicted that.
Ward using his speed still. HUGE bang of heads again — again. Kessler is hurting from that one. Both eyes cut now. You know, it is what it is, but you can’t not point it out at this point. He’s used his head in many ways.
Kessler is getting desperate and starting to throw heavy shots. Ward using the jab again, and maybe hurting Kessler, but who knows how much of Kessler’s fatigue is due to the butts?
Kessler round close for me.

Sonsona - Hernandez
Sonsona is looking kind of flat. Perhaps trying to keep his weight down has had a big effect. He had one good 30 second spurt during the 6th where he had Hernandez backed up on the ropes – but then Herandez outworked him for the rest of the round, and had him backing up.

and to actually reply to your post, there was one really blatant head usage but the others i felt were questionable
Two I thought
In round 4, there was a spot where Ward’s knees buckled a bit. When Ward held on to clinch, he put his hand behind Kessler’s head and actually PULLED Kessler’s head into the top of Ward’s head for a headbutt. THAT butt was what wobbled Kessler in the 4th, as well as caused the big circular cut he had around his right eye.
That said, up to that point of the fight, Ward had dominated every minute other than the one shot where Kessler hurt him 15 seconds earlier.

Hernandez did some real good work over the second half of the round. He’s just letting his hands go in close all the time. Not much on his shots, but he’s landing them. Sonsona is looking flustered. The pro-Sonsona crowd isn’t having much to cheer about right now.

I think he was justified in complaining, but I thought he acted like the butts were the whole reason he lost. He was outclassed from start to finish, imho. Another good round for Hernandez. He’s just outhustling and outlanding Sonsona. He’s pushing him back, landing little shots on the inside, and bossing the fight right now.
