Diaz-Malignaggi rematch finds venue in Chicago

Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi will rematch on December 12 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. HBO will televise. (Photo via upload.wikimedia.org)

The December 12 rematch between Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz has found a home in Chicago. BoxingScene.com reports that the two will meet at the UIC Pavilion, which holds 7-10,000 for boxing.

The venue has been a pretty frequent home for fights and is located near Chicago's Little Italy, which may give them a chance to draw with Malignaggi. Dominic Pesoli's 8 Count Productions runs there frequently, and the recent David Diaz-Jesus Chavez fight was held at the building as well. WEC has also run there.

It's a good location, much better than the last major card held in Chicago, the Juan Diaz-Julio Diaz fight that was in Hoffman Estates, which is fairly out of the way. It's also worth noting that Don King promoted that fight horribly, and that Golden Boy and DiBella Entertainment will almost surely do better than King did. Chicago could be an amazing fight city if given proper treatment and marketing; there's as much diversity there as anywhere in America and it's a great sports town.

Victor Ortiz will meet Antonio Diaz on the televised undercard.

Well Ortiz should win but sometimes we don’t know how feel a fighter will react after knockout loss.

I suspect it will be a blowout

Diaz hasn’t fought at 140 in nearly a decade, so he’ll probably have the same problems that Hoya did against Pacquiao. Also, the last decent fighter he beat was Mickey Ward. BEFORE the Gatti trilogy.

It’s a 144-pound limit, so Diaz won’t have to come down all the way.

Good choice!

That’s true it’s by little Italy, and also it’s not too far from Pilsen which is one of the main hispanic neighborhoods. I used to live by there and there were businesses that actually had boxing posters here and there.

A very good location, but one drawback it’s a pretty old and drab place. Though that may be good as well as it could keep ticket prices down.

Yeah the UIC Pavilion is about ten miles away from where i live. It is a really good venue. They have many attractions there annually. Yeah and Hoffman Estates is a far far suburb that is the residence of pertentious, annoying High Society Anglo Saxons.True Chicagoans usually dont even bother making the trip.(Although the Fedor vs Rogers fight is there this Saturday.) Ehh…. still not worth the trip. The Pavillion is actually in the city which is great. And the best part of this rematch is NO BIAS FROM THE JUDGES!!! YAAAY!! Im gonna buy tickets for this fight!! I might even bet!! It’ll be a great weekend.
