Off-Topic: Music
With our community and the boxing fanbase being so diverse, I was kind of interested to see what music everyone listens to. Every now and again before a fight card goes live we get into small music discussions in one of the threads, but I wanted to really open it up and see if the tastes skew one way or another, or if we're pretty eclectic as I sort of assume will be the case.
What are you listening to lately?
What are some of your favorite artists?
Hey, I'll start!
Lately: Fly Gypsy, D.Black, CunninLynguists, discovering a profound and too-long undiscovered love of The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach (I had listened to the Keys before, but they really hit me right about a month ago), Sarah Blasko, Aceyalone's latest
All-Time Favorites: (OK, deep breath, and... GO!)
Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Clash, Lynyrd Skynyrd (original lineup only), My Morning Jacket, George Jones, Dean Martin, Sam Cooke, Van Morrison, Otis Redding, Nas, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Wu-Tang Clan, Metallica, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Tom Petty, Beastie Boys, Hank Williams, Whiskeytown, pre-Hollywood Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Rancid, Social Distortion, Smokey Robinson, M. Ward, Kanye West, Tom Waits, The Bronx, Bob Wills, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lemonheads, The White Stripes, Nico, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Old 97's (before Rhett Miller became a doe-eyed doofus), Nat "King" Cole, Mastodon, Kings of Leon, Oasis, Jimi Hendrix, Eric B & Rakim, The Libertines (and I liked Dirty Pretty Things too, but Doherty's crap can fuck off), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...
...I think I can leave it there.
FanPosts do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors of Bad Left Hook or SB Nation. They might, though.

I'm weird
Lately – a lot of dubstep of the harder and more twitchy variety. N-Type, Rusko, Akira Kiteshi, 12th Planet, etc. Haven’t found too many rock albums I liked a lot this year. A few albums from the past 3 or 4 years I’ve really enjoyed:
MGMT – Oracular Spectacular
Ten Kens – Ten Kens (neo-grunge)
Ludachrist – Bangfest (gangsta rap/electro mashup)
School of Seven Bells – Alpinisms (Shoegaze with an Appalachian folk influence)
Silversun Pickups – Carnavas
Crystal Castles (Bleepcore)
Rin Toshite Shigure – Inspiration is DEAD (Japanese Screamo)
All time – 90’s Weezer, Pixies, Therapy?, Avail, Deekline, Jawbreaker, Jimmy Eat World (although their albums have pretty much gotten successively worse, just not at as rapid of a rate as Weezer’s), The Impossibles, Bad Religion, The Hives, Metric, the broken beat movement from UK hardcore through breakbeat, to speed garage, to 2 step, to 8-bar, to dubstep. Once upon a time was a DJ, but haven’t done that in over 6 years now.

Weezer’s new one is hoooooooooooooorrible
Blue, Pinkerton and Green kick ass, and I really thought the first four songs and last two songs on Maladroit were great. Since then it’s been shockingly awful.

They lost me before Green
I’m convinced that there was just something much better when Rivers Cuomo and Matt Sharp both had to agree on the music. Weezer’s gone to the crapper since they kicked out Sharp, and Sharp went way downhill after The Rentals (half of their songs were written for Weezer, which was why he was kicked out of the band). Blue Album and Pinkerton were genius though.

Power Pop with female leads
It doesn’t get any better than Metric
Also, from my list below, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Bat for Lashes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Stars are all great bands with female leads.

A forgotten great in the realm of female power pop
is Magnapop. They tried making a comeback a few years ago, but it just wasn’t the same. That Dog. was pretty good too, back in their day.

Oh, and Veruca Salt
and Elastica.
I’ll admit I have a soft spot for 90’s power pop. It is what it is.

I'm a rather unlikely hip hop fan myself
Right now I’ve been listening to a lot of a guy from Somalia called K’naan who does some really good music ,even if he does rap about how shit Somalia is rather a lot!
Also some of the best golden age stuff from KRS and Rakim. Probably the best two men in hip hop right now are dan le sac and scrubious pip who you will not have heard of. They are absolutely sublime. Oh and anyone who hasn’t bought the much awaited new album by Raekwon, do.

Love DBT.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

As much as I should love DBT, I just never have. I cannot for the life of me pinpoint why this is. I love the very idea of them but it somehow doesn’t click. Someday it might, I guess.

Late in the piece as usual...
Very random music tastes…
I veer right across the spectrum, from movie soundtracks like Gladiator, which for me is just epic (used to have that on in the gym A Lot)Buena Vista Social club album, India.Arie, Alicia Keys, QOTSA, from back in the day Dre, Tupac, Wu-Tang…I have no idea about most of the bands above here?! Kanye’s first album, Nas, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Libertines three nights at the Forum a few years ago for amazing nights out, even though I was supposed to be working. Recently, one of my cooler friends pointed me towards Them Crooked Vultures and the youngest sister towards Kings of Leon.
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘’Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'’ (Bernard Hopkins)

from movie soundtracks like Gladiator
I can listen to Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings stuff or Jerry Goldsmith’s Rudy soundtrack all day.

I like to catch live jazz at small clubs in New York, where I live. I’ve always loved classic rock, and I’ve seen my share of Dead shows back in the day. Lately, I’ve had a particular weakness for old school Motown and funk.

Rockin' New Album Alert:
Sorry if i’m posting too much in here, but i recently got this album and i’ve been listening to it for 48 straight hours now

it’s the self-titled debut of the supergroup known as Them Crooked Vultures. Them Crooked Vultures’ three members are three legends of the music biz. Playing bass, keyboards, and background vocalist is none other than ex-Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. At lead vocals and guitar its the 90s desert rock legend from such bands as KYUSS and Queens of the Stone Age, Josh Homme. finally some dude i personally don’t care about but some of you might, playing drums on this album is the drummer for nirvana and the guitarist/singer of the Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl.
this is an awesome record folks

Promising on paper, although JPJ is mostly Famous Guy at this point.
Although if it sucks I’m blaming Brody Dalle.

yeah JPJ’s biggest contribution on this is on the keyboards which is pretty disappointing to me since i’m a (shitty) bassist. he’s mostly following Homme’s riffs note for note. Homme’s riffs are also more of the same from the past few years. kind of those “weird” riffs from the last two QOTSA albums, but still pretty awesome riffs.
i’d give TCV an 8.5/10. great fun record with some minor duds
